Drainage Patterns And Glaciations In Eastern Nebraska, William J. Wayne Jan 1985

Drainage Patterns And Glaciations In Eastern Nebraska, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Most of the stream courses of eastern Nebraska came into existence during the recession of an ice margin. Their patterns include many drainage anomalies that suggest both the manner and the times of ice disappearance. Rivers coming from the west flow down the regional slope of the High Plains. Along and east of the "Kansan" glacial border most streams are subparallel, trend S300 _40 0 E, and probablY mark pauses of an actively retreating ice margin. Logan Creek, an underfit stream, flows S4SoE from Hartington to the Thurston/Burt c<;mnty line, then directly southward to the Elkhorn. East of Logan Creek and above the bend, South Blackbird, Omaha, and Cow creeks flow parallel to Logal Creek then bend abruptly back northward to the Missouri. The Bow creeks in Cedar and Knox counties describe a series of arcs that surely mark successive retreatal positions of an ice lobe that crossed the Missouri trench around Yankton, South Dakota. Bazile Creek in the Santee Sioux Reservation flows northward to the Missouri, but the gravel and sand along it indicate a southeastward flow for the currents that deposited them. These sediments can be traced into the North Fork of the Elkhorn, thence to the Platte Valley near Fremont. These drainage lines define the lobate margins of the ice through the J ames and Red River lowlands. The degree of dissection and alteration of the associated tills suggests the relative lengths of time since the ice melted from them. The compact and weathered tills in east-central Nebraska are oldest (classical Kansan); the softer, less weathered tills near the Missouri are younger (Illinoian?); Wisconsinan ice may have blocked the Missouri River near Yankton and shunted it to the Elkhorn, but left little till on the south side of the Missouri.

In Situ Stress, Natural Fracture Distribution, And Borehole Elongation In The Auburn Geothermal Well, Auburn, New York, Stephen H. Hickman, John H. Healy, Mark D. Zoback Jan 1985

In Situ Stress, Natural Fracture Distribution, And Borehole Elongation In The Auburn Geothermal Well, Auburn, New York, Stephen H. Hickman, John H. Healy, Mark D. Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Hydraulic fracturing stress measurements and a borehole televiewer survey were conducted in a 1.6-km-deep well at Auburn, New York. This well, which was drilled at the outer margin of the Appalachian Fold and Thrust Belt in the Appalachian Plateau, penetrates approximately 1540 m of lower Paleozoics edimentary rocks and terminates 60 m into the Precambrian marble basement. Analysis of the hydraulic fracturing tests indicates that the minimum horizontal principal stress increases in a nearly linear fashion from 9.9 ± 0.2 MPa at 593 m to 30.6 ± 0.4 MPa at 1482 m. The magnitude of the
maximum horizontal principal stress …

An Evaluation Of Uranium-Series Dating Of Fossil Echinoids From Southern California Pleistocene Marine Terraces, Daniel R. Muhs, Los Angeles County Museum Of Natural History, Los Angeles, Ca Jan 1985

An Evaluation Of Uranium-Series Dating Of Fossil Echinoids From Southern California Pleistocene Marine Terraces, Daniel R. Muhs, Los Angeles County Museum Of Natural History, Los Angeles, Ca

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Fossil sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus) from Pleistocene marine terraces on the southern California Channel Islands have been dated by the uranium-series method in order to test the suitability of echinoids for dating marine terraces. Results indicate that urchin plates and spines do not behave as closed systems with respect to both uranium and thorium. Calculated ages based on these data do not agree with uranium-series ages (120,000 and 127,000 yrs) obtained previously from corals from the same localities. Thus, fossil sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus) are not considered suitable for uranium-series dating of Pleistocene marine terrace deposits.

Soils And The Location Of Cacao Orchards At A Maya Site In Western Belize, Daniel R. Muhs, Robert R. Kautz, J. Jefferson Mackinnon Jan 1985

Soils And The Location Of Cacao Orchards At A Maya Site In Western Belize, Daniel R. Muhs, Robert R. Kautz, J. Jefferson Mackinnon

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Cacao was one of the most important crops of the lowland Maya. Ethnohistoric sources document that the Postclassic-Colonial Period Maya settlement of Tipu in western Belize was an important cacao-growing center, yet evidence of where the cacao was grown is not apparent. We analysed the suitability of floodplain, terrace, and bedrock soils for cacao cultivation. Our results indicate that the soils most likely to have been used for cacao growth were those on the modem floodplain of the Macal River, based on their suitable physical and chemical properties. In addition, buried stone walls of Late Classic or Postclassic age that …

Well Bore Breakouts And In Situ Stress, Mark D. Zoback, Daniel Moos, Larry Mastin, Roger N. Anderson Jan 1985

Well Bore Breakouts And In Situ Stress, Mark D. Zoback, Daniel Moos, Larry Mastin, Roger N. Anderson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The detailed cross-sectional shape of stress induced well bore breakouts has been studied using specially processed ultrasonic borehole televiewer data. We show breakout shapes for a variety of rock types and introduce a simple elastic failure model which explains many features of the observations. Both the observations and calculations indicate that the breakouts define relatively broad and flat curvilinear surfaces which enlarge the borehole in the direction of minimum horizontal compression. This work supports the hypothesis that breakouts result from shear failure of the rock where the compressive stress concentration around the well bore is greatest and that breakouts can …

A Pleistocene Jaguar From North-Central Nebraska, C. B. Schultz, Larry D. Martin, M. R. Schultz

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

A nearly complete skull of an extinct jaguar, Panthera onca augusta from the Mullen Assemblage in Cherry County, Nebraska, provides new information concerning North American jaguars. The presence of Cervalces, Symbos, Tapirus, and Panthera onca in the Mullen Assemblage seems to indicate an extension of the Pleistocene spruce taiga into north-central Nebraska in the Early to Middle Illinoian.

The Variability Of Holocene Climate Change: Evidence From Varved Lake Sediments, Walter E. Dean, J. Platt Bradbury, Roger Y. Anderson, Cathy Barnosky

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Varved sediments from a lake near the present forest-prairie border in northwestern Minnesota provide an annual record of climate change for the last 10,400 years. Climate-sensitive mineral, chemical, and biological components show that the mid-Holocene dry interval between 8500 and 4000 years ago is asymmetrical and actually consists of two distinct drier pulses separated by a moister interval that lasted about 600 years. Cyclic fluctuations with periods of several hundred years were abrupt and persistent throughout the Holocene and are most clearly recorded within the two drier pulses.

Sinking Of Volcanic Ash In Uncompacted Sediment In Williams Lake, Washington, Roger Y. Anderson, Edward Nuhfer, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount St. Helens on 18 May 1980 fell into Williams Lake in eastern Washington and was temporarily suspended at the sediment-water interface. After several months of compaction, the ash layer broke up and sank into lower density uncompacted lake sediment. Stratigraphic time displacements of several hundred years and a failure to recognize discontinuous ash layers in sediment cores are possible consequences of this process.

Further Comments On The Nature And Developmental History Of Quaternary Pumpkin Creek, Banner, And Morrill Counties, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The occurrence of Quaternary anorthosite-rich sand and gravel deposits in south-central Morrill County, Nebraska, supports the idea that Pumpkin Creek formerly flowed farther east than it does today. This eastern extension of the creek was abandoned when another headward cutting tributary of the North Platte River cut through the divide between Pumpkin Creek and the North Platte just east of Jail and Courthouse rocks and captured Pumpkin Creek.

Unusual clast types found in Quaternary deposits along Pumpkin Creek in Banner County may be used to determine some characteristics of the streams that carried them. For example, armored mud balls and …

Armored Mud Balls And Friable Sand Megaclasts From A Complex Early Pleistoceme Alluvial Fill, Southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Armored mud balls and friable sand megaclasts occur in exposures of a complex Early Pleistocene sand and gravel alluvial fill which caps a strath terrace in southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska. The mudballs are limited to a tributary arroyo. The sand megaclasts occur in sediments deposited along a trunk stream. It is possible that the sand megaclasts were transported to the site in a frozen condition.
