Petrography, Geochemistry And Origin Of Lower Liassic Dolomites In The Aydıncık Area, Mersin, Southern Turkey, Muhsi̇n Eren, Meryem Yeşi̇lot Kaplan, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In the Aydıncık area, the Lower Liassic carbonates consist predominantly of dolomites, including limestone and dolomitic limestone intervals. These carbonates were deposited in peritidal environments, and later underwent early and late stage dolomitization. Petrographically, three dolomite-types are determined: (1) very fine to fine crystalline dolomite (T1) with crystal size of 13-65 µm and a good fabric preservation, (2) coarse crystalline sucrosic dolomite (T2) with size of 65 to 270 µm and fabric destruction, and (3) dolomite cement (T3) that occurs as a clear outer rim to cloudy coarse dolomite crystals (T2) or as a pore-lining and cement-fill of fenestral pores. …

Retention And Transport Of Hexavalent Chromium In Calcareous Karst Soils, İrfan Yolcubal, Ni̇hat Hakan Akyol
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Hexavalent chromium, which is a highly toxic and soluble form of the element chromium, is a common soil and groundwater contaminant found in many contaminated sites throughout the world and poses a serious risk to human health when released into environment. The objective of this study was to determine transport and retention behaviour of aqueous Cr(VI) species in a highly calcareous and alkaline top soil of a karst system that is vulnerable to contamination. Batch sorption studies and column experiments conducted at both saturated and unsaturated steady-state flow conditions were used to evaluate the sorption/desorption and the transport of Cr(VI) …

Filograna Minor Nov. Sp. (Worm Tube) From The Middle Triassic (Anisian) Reef Boulders Of The Karaburun Peninsula, Western Turkey, Baba Senowbari-Daryan, Michael Link, İsmai̇l Işintek
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
A colonial serpulid worm tube, Filograna minor nov. sp., from the Anisian reef boulders of the Karaburun Peninsula, Western Turkey is described. The Filograna-bearing boulders occur together with Anisian reef boulders within the Upper Anisian siliciclastic deposits of the Gerence Formation. Filograna minor differs from the Norian species Filograna serialis, described by Senowbari-Daryan and Link from the Taurus Mountains, by the smaller dimensions of the tubes.

A N-S-Trending Active Extensional Structure, The Şuhut (Afyon) Graben: Commencement Age Of The Extensional Neotectonic Period In The Isparta Angle, Sw Turkey, Ali̇ Koçyi̇ği̇t, Şule Deveci̇
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Şuhut graben is an 8-11-km-wide, 24-km-long, N-S-trending, active extensional structure located on the southern shoulder of the Akşehir-Afyon graben, near the apex of the outer Isparta Angle. The Şuhut graben developed on a pre-Upper Pliocene rock assemblage comprising pre-Jurassic metamorphic rocks, Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous platform carbonates, the Lower Miocene-Middle Pliocene Afyon stratovolcanic complex and a fluvio-lacustrine volcano-sedimentary sequence. The eastern margin of the Şuhut graben is dominated by the Afyon volcanics and their well-bedded fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary cover, which is folded into a series of NNE-trending anticlines and synclines. This volcano-sedimentary sequence was deformed during a phase of WNW-ESE contraction, and …

Quaternary Activity Of The Cihanbeyli And Yeniceoba Fault Zones: İnönü-Eskişehir Fault System, Central Anatolia, Erman Özsayin, Kadi̇r Di̇ri̇k
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The İnönü-Eskişehir fault system (İEFS) is one of the most important fault systems in Central Anatolia and consists of a series of NW-SE- to WNW-ESE-trending fault zones extending from Uludağ (Bursa) in the northwest to Sultanhanı in the southeast. Between İnönü and Sivrihisar, the Eskişehir fault zone of the İEFS trends WNW, but east of Sivrihisar the İEFS changes its direction to NW-SE and splays out into four fault zones, named the Ilıca, Yeniceoba, Cihanbeyli and Sultanhanı fault zones and extends to south of Tuzgölü in the east. The NW-SE-trending Yeniceoba fault zone (YFZ), exposed between Günyüzü in the west …

Tectonic Evolution Of The Kiraz Basin, Küçük Menderes Graben: Evidence For Compression/Uplift-Related Basin Formation Overprinted By Extensional Tectonics In West Anatolia, Tahi̇r Emre, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Kiraz Basin which is located at the eastern end of the Küçük Menderes Graben was previously considered to be an extensional basin. However, the data presented here allow us to infer that the tectonic evolution of the Kiraz Basin could be explained by an alternate model which suggests compression/uplift-related basin formation at the early stage of basin evolution followed, later, by block faulting in an extensional neotectonic regime. The successive compressional and extensional strain is accommodated by a predominantly NE-trending strike-slip fault system. The new model is based on the detailed mapping, field-cross sections and kinematic analyses of the …

The Dikili-Çandarlı Volcanics, Western Turkey: Magmatic Interactions As Recorded By Petrographic And Geochemical Features, Zeki̇ye Karacik, Yücel Yilmaz, Julian A. Pearce
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Located in the northwestern part of the Aegean region, Dikili-Çandarlı volcanic suite contains products representative for the western Anatolian Miocene volcanism. They can be divided into two main groups: the Dikili and the Çandarlı groups. The Dikili group is Early-Middle Miocene in age and consists mainly of pyroclastic rocks, andesitic-dacitic lavas, lava breccia, lahar flows and associated sedimentary rocks. The lavas contain disequilibrium phenocrysts assemblages. The Çandarlı group consists of Upper Miocene-Pliocene lava and sediment associations. The volcanic rocks consist mainly of rhyolitic domes and basaltic trachyandesite-basaltic andesite lavas erupted along the NW-SE- and NE-SW-trending fault systems; the faults controlled …
Jurassic Volcanism In The Eastern Pontides: Is It Rift Related Or Subduction Related?, Cüneyt Şen
Jurassic Volcanism In The Eastern Pontides: Is It Rift Related Or Subduction Related?, Cüneyt Şen
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Jurassic volcanic rocks in the centre of the northern zone (south of Trabzon City) provide important constraints on the evolution of Pontides. The investigated volcanic rocks form a transitional series between tholeiitic and calc-alkaline, and is dominated by basalt, basaltic andesite and andesite. Geochemically, they are enriched in LILE and LREE contents and depleted in HFSE [(La/Yb)_N= 2.2 - 8.5; (Nb/La)_N= 0.1 - 0.77)] compared to mid-ocean ridge basalts and have radiogenic Nd isotope ratios of \epsilonNd(210 Ma)= -0.72 to 3.24. These trace element and isotope data suggest that these rocks were derived from low degrees of partial melting …

Origin Of Kaolin Deposits: Evidence From The Hisarcık (Emet-Kütahya) Deposits, Western Turkey, Ali̇ Sayin
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Kaolin deposits, situated approximately 20 km south of Hisarcık, have been formed by the alteration of dacite and dacitic tuffs related to the Miocene volcanism associated with extensional tectonics. The Hisarcık kaolin deposits occur in the Kızılcukur, Ulaşlar and Kurtdere areas. Kaolinite is the only clay mineral associated with a-quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, alunite, natroalunite and hematite in some kaolins, whereas, other kaolinite accompanies smectite, which represents a moderate kaolinization. Low-cristobalite is the dominant silica mineral in these kaolins. In spite of strong kaolinization, the kaolins contain a high amount of finely-disseminated a-quartz in places, resulting in low Al_2O_3 values (13.80 …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Niksar Basin is sited along the eastern segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone in Turkey. It is a young sigmoidal pull-apart basin bordered by two non-parallel master faults associated with earthquakes in 1939 and 1942. The fault geometry along the irregular ENE margin of the basin is complex where young Plio-Quaternary volcanic rocks reach the surface along pairs of steep strike-slip faults which cut the basin sediments. The volcanic rocks around the Niksar Basin have been dated by high precision K-Ar dating and the ages range between 542 ± 9 ka and 567 ± 9 ka. The lavas …

Origin And Tectonic Significance Of The Metamorphic Sole And Isolated Dykes Of The Divriği Ophiolite (Sivas, Turkey): Evidence For Slab Break-Off Prior To Ophiolite Emplacement, Osman Parlak, Hüseyi̇n Yilmaz, Durmuş Boztuğ
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Late Cretaceous Divriği ophiolite of east-central Anatolia comprises, from bottom to top, an ophiolitic mélange, metamorphic sole and remnants of oceanic lithosphere. The ophiolitic mélange has been thrust onto the Lower Carboniferous-Campanian Munzur Limestone (Tauride platform), and is in turn tectonically overlain by the metamorphic sole. The metamorphic-sole rocks are represented by amphibolite, plagioclase amphibolite, plagioclase-amphibole schist, plagioclase-epidote-amphibole schist and calc-schist. The oceanic-lithosphere remnant exhibits a complete section, excluding volcanic rocks, comprising mantle tectonites, ultramafic to mafic cumulates, isotropic gabbros and sheeted dykes. Isolated dykes intrude the metamorphic sole and mantle tectonites at different structural levels. The metamorphic-sole rocks …
Mineral-Chemical Constraints On The Miocene Calc-Alkaline And Shoshonitic Volcanic Rocks Of Western Turkey: Disequilibrium Phenocryst Assemblages As Indicators Of Magma Storage And Mixing Conditions, Ercan Aldanmaz
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Early to Middle Miocene (22 to 15 Ma) volcanic activity across western Turkey produced a series of lavas and pyroclastic deposits with calc-alkaline and shoshonitic affinities. The erupted magmas show a broad range of compositions from basaltic to rhyolitic (48-75 SiO2 wt%) and are composed of variable phenocryst assemblages. Petrographic and mineral-chemical characteristics suggest that the magmas underwent hydrous crystallization in deep crustal magma chambers that was dominated by plagioclase + pyroxene + pargasitic amphibole fractionation. Subsequent crystallization in shallower magma chambers followed two different trends: (1) anhydrous (pyroxene + plagioclase-dominated); and (2) hydrous (plagioclase + edenitic amphibole + pyroxene-dominated). …

Contact Metamorphism Around The Eocene Saraycık Granodiorite, Eastern Pontides, Turkey, Gülteki̇n Topuz
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Eocene Saraycık granodiorite, eastern Pontides, Turkey, is a small post-tectonic intrusive body (~11 km2), cross-cutting tectonically juxtaposed distinct metamorphic and non-metamorphic lithologies. A ~0.8 to 1-km-wide contact-metamorphic aureole has developed around the intrusion. Disequilibrium is prevalent in all lithologies, even in the inner zones of the contact aureole. Conditions of contact metamorphism are estimated by simple phase equilibria applied to microdomains in the metapelitic lithologies without obvious signs of disequilibrium: Shallow emplacement depths (0.21±0.05 GPa = ~5-8 km) are suggested by contact-metamorphic mineral assemblages (e.g., andalusite + corundum + K-feldspar), by Al-in-hornblende barometry on granodiorite and by partial melting …

Mohr-Circle-Based Rotational Invariants Of A Magnetotelluric Data Set From The Thrace Region Of Turkey: Geological Implications, Murat Bayrak, Aysan Gürer, Ö. Feyzi̇ Gürer, O. Meti̇n İlkişik, Ahmet T. Başokur
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In the summer of 1995, magnetotelluric data were acquired at forty sites along a southwest-northeast profile crossing northwestern Turkey in continental Europe. The traverse, 204 km in length, crossed the boundary between a metamorphic mass called the Istranca Massif and a large Tertiary sedimentary basin called the Thrace Basin. The pseudosections of Mohr-circle-based rotational invariant characteristics of the magnetotelluric data such as central impedance (d3), anisotropy angle (l) and phase of central impedance (fd3) were prepared with classical magnetotelluric parameters (apparent resistivity and impedance phase), and detailed Mohr-circle displays were shown for selected stations as a function of the Bostick …
Volcanism And Its Contribution To Mudrock Genesis, Warren Huff
Volcanism And Its Contribution To Mudrock Genesis, Warren Huff
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Explosive eruptions from volcanoes are recorded in the stratigraphic record throughout the Phanerozoic. The most visible evidence of these eruptions is generally in the form of preserved tephra layers, and they appear to be concentrated in the stratigraphic record at times of active plate collision and concomitant high stands of sea level. The products of volcanic eruptions are lavas, tephra and gases, and whereas low-silica, anhydrous basaltic magmas are usually erupted in the form of lava flows high-silica, hydrous rhyolitic magmas are commonly explosively erupted as plinian and ultraplinian plumes, and associated pyroclastic flows. Fallout tephras may be preserved in …

3d-Architecture And Neogene Evolution Of The Malatya Basin: Inferences For The Kinematics Of The Malatya And Ovacık Fault Zones, Nuretdi̇n Kaymakçi, Murat İnceöz, Pinar Ertepinar
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The 3D-architecture of the Malatya Basin was studied using remote sensing, seismic interpretation, and palaeostress analysis in the context of the Malatya-Ovacık fault zone. The results indicate that the Ovacık and Malatya fault zones are not different segments of a single 'so called' Malatya-Ovacık fault zone; rather, they are two different fault zones that have operated independently. In addition, the Ovacık fault zone is delimited in the west by the Malatya fault zone, which extends farther north from the point of supposed junction. Maximum individual deflection of streams along the Ovacık fault zone is about 9.3 km, and summation of …

Geochemical Constraints On The Provenance, Mineral Sorting And Subaerial Weathering Of Lower Jurassic And Upper Cretaceous Clastic Rocks Of The Eastern Pontides, Yusufeli (Artvin), Ne Turkey, Abdurrahman Dokuz, Erkan Tanyolu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
An integrated petrographic and geochemical study of the shales and sandstones of Early Jurassic and Late Cretaceous age in the Yusufeli area (Turkey) was carried out to obtain more information on their provenance, sedimentological history and tectonic setting, as well as to evaluate the influence of weathering, hydraulic sorting and recycling processes upon source-rock signature. Depending on their matrix and mineralogical content, the Lower Jurassic sandstones are identified as arkosic arenite and wacke, while the Upper Cretaceous sandstones are defined as lithic arenite and wacke. Elemental ratios such as La/Sc, Cr/Ni, Co/Th, Th/Sc and Cr/Th indicate a mafic source for …

Calcretized Ferricretes Around The Jaisalmer Area, Thar Desert, India: Their Chemistry, Mineralogy, Micromorphology And Genesis, D. Ramakrishnan, Krishna Chandra Tiwari
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Ferricrete, an iron duricrust, caps Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks around Jaisalmer in the Indian desert. These ferricretes are associated with two distinct present-day landforms. The upper unit is a high-level dissected, rocky structural plain and the lower one a colluvial flat with soft ferricrete gravels. This study pertains to the first situation wherein field observations, micromorphological features and regolith chemistry suggest an in situ origin for the ferricretes, as in the case of the Walther profile. Subsequent tectonism and changes in base level resulted in a shift in processes from weathering to erosion. Episodes of erosion resulted in inversion of …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Oligo-Miocene sediments have not been adequately studied biostratigraphically, and a detailed bio-chronostratigraphic framework has not yet been established in Eastern Anatolian basins. Palynomorphs have therefore been correlated with the biozonations of marine dinoflagellates, planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton of similar latitudes in combined samples from the Ebulbahar and Kelereşdere measured stratigraphic sections, which are located in the northeastern part of Muş. Palynological (dinoflagellate), foraminiferal micropalaentological, and nannopalaeontological events, correlatable with worldwide defined biozonations, have been documented from uppermost Rupelian to Upper Miocene-Pliocene sediments. First occurrences (FOs) and and last occurrences (LOs) of selected dinoflagellates are important in establishing the biostratigraphic …

Petrography And Geochemistry Of Paragneisses In The Çine Submassif Of The Menderes Massif, Western Anatolia, Firat Şengün, Osman Candan, O. Özcan Dora, O. Ersi̇n Koralay
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Menderes Massif, which covers a large area in western Turkey, is made up of Pan-African basement rocks and a Palaeozoic to Early Tertiary cover sequence. The study area is located in the Dalama and Hallaçlar (Aydın) area, in the northern and central parts of the Çine submassif of the Menderes Massif. The oldest units of the Pan-African basement are metaclastics, consisting of paragneisses and mica schists that gradually and conformably overlay paragneisses. Macroscopic appearances and mineralogical and textural data indicate that paragneisses can be subdivided into four subgroups. These are: (1) black spotted, (2) white spotted, (3) massive, grey-coloured …

A Miocene Palaeovalley Network In The Western Taurus (Turkey), Olivier Monod, Catherina Kuzucuoğlu, Aral İ. Okay
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Lower Miocene conglomerates in the Köprü and Manavgat basins contain pebbles that can be confidently traced back to their source areas, owing to their distinctive lithologies. Among others, are the green Huğlu volcanics (Late Trias), known only in allochthonous units from the Beyşehir region, or the Alanya blueschists, restricted to the Sugözü unit in the Alanya Massif. The problem is to find out how this detrital material could have travelled about eighty kilometres through the Taurus calcareous units during the Miocene. Fortunately, the present drainage system is not yet fully reorganised in the Taurus, and large areas of the chain …

Trilobites From The Çal Tepe Formation (Cambrian), Near Seydişehir, Central Taurides, Southwestern Turkey, William T. Dean
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The type section of the Çal Tepe Formation, near Seydişehir, is reviewed. The basal dolomite member is unfossiliferous, but the succeeding black limestone member (24 m), light-grey limestone member (10.15 m), and red nodular limestone member (46.7 m) are subdivided into thirty-seven numbered, often fossiliferous beds. Trilobites from the black limestone member, late Early Cambrian, exhibit affinities with Morocco, Spain and northwestern Europe; they include one new genus and species (Pamphyliaspis nigra) and three other new species (Condylopyge matutina, Alueva venulosa, Antatlasia scabra). The lower light-grey limestone member contains Acadoparadoxides (Acadoparadoxides) mureroensis, basal Middle Cambrian index species in Spain, with …
Karst In Turkish Thrace: Compatibility Between Geological History And Karst Type, Mehmet Ekmekçi̇
Karst In Turkish Thrace: Compatibility Between Geological History And Karst Type, Mehmet Ekmekçi̇
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Geographically, Thrace is a region located in southeastern Europe within the territories of Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. In Turkish Thrace, karst occurs extensively in Eocene limestones, although some limited karst occurs in marble of the metamorphic series of Palaeozoic age. The karstification base is shallow to very shallow and most of the dolines and poljes have been captured by surface streams. Subsurface drainage has been changed to surface drainage in most parts of the region. Caves and cave relicts are concentrated mainly at three different altitudes, and almost all caves are horizontal or sub-horizontal. With these characteristics, Turkish Thrace hosts …
