Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The South Dehgolan intrusion in the Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone ranges in composition from calc-alkalic monzogabbro to syenite to alkalic granite. This suite is composed mainly of variable proportions of quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, biotite, hornblende, and pyroxene. The plagioclase composition varies between albite to labradorite. The biotites are Mg- to Fe-rich in the monzogabbro to granite, respectively. The amphiboles are calcic and the composition varies from magnesiohornblende to actinolite. Clinopyroxene compositions fall in the diopside-augite field. The average calculated near-solidus crystallization temperatures are 774 °C, 655 °C, and 775 °C for the monzogabbro-monzodiorite, syenite, and granite, respectively. Calculated average pressures of emplacement …

Spatial-Temporal Analysis Of Seismicity Before The 2012 Varzeghan, Iran, Mw 6.5 Earthquake, Mohammad Talebi, Mehdi Zare, Rohollah Madahi Zadeh, Aref Bali-Lashak

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this work, the spatial and temporal variations of seismicity in northwestern Iran have been evaluated with a special focus on seismic precursors of the 11 August 2012 Mw 6.5 Varzeghan earthquake. The precursors are defined by the z-value test and the generalized fractal dimensions of earthquake epicenters. The investigation applies earthquakes that have occurred since 2006 in a region that includes the main shock and collected by the Iranian Seismological Center. In order to eliminate the effect of explosions in the processing, we removed the explosion from the used catalog by using the normalized ratio analysis of daytime to …

Rare Earth Element Geochemistry Of The Upper Permian Limestone: The Kanigorgeh Mining District, Nw Iran, Ali Abedini, Ali Asghar Calagari

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The limestone of the Ruteh Formation of Upper Permian age in the Kanigorgeh district (northeast of Bukan, NW Iran) contains several layers and lenses of bauxitic ores. Mineralogical data show that this limestone consists of calcite and quartz as major and plagioclase, kaolinite, and hematite as minor mineral phases. Geochemical analyses reveal that the proportions of ?REEs (La-Lu) in this limestone vary from 35.28 to 160.78 ppm. The values of Eu and Ce anomalies (normalized to PAAS) of the limestone have ranges of 1.11-1.68 and 0.89-1.16, respectively. The high values of ?REEs; low values of Y/Ho; strong and positive correlations …

Petrology And Geochemistry Of Mafic Dykes From The Muslim Bagh Ophiolite (Pakistan): Implications For Petrogenesis And Emplacement, Mohammad Ishaq Kakar, Khalid Mahmood, Mohammad Arif, Mehrab Khan, Andrew C. Kerr, Mohibullah Mohibullah, Aimal Khan Kasi Jan 2015

Petrology And Geochemistry Of Mafic Dykes From The Muslim Bagh Ophiolite (Pakistan): Implications For Petrogenesis And Emplacement, Mohammad Ishaq Kakar, Khalid Mahmood, Mohammad Arif, Mehrab Khan, Andrew C. Kerr, Mohibullah Mohibullah, Aimal Khan Kasi

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Two different types of mafic dykes are found in the Muslim Bagh Ophiolite: 1) a sheeted dyke complex and 2) a mafic dyke swarm. Relative to the host plutonic section, the sheeted dykes are poorly developed, implying that they formed in an oceanic setting with a low and intermittent supply of magma, probably because of cyclic accumulation of crystals at the base of the magma chamber. Both the sheeted dykes and the dyke swarms have been metamorphosed to greenschist/amphibolite facies conditions. With the exception of the upper level gabbros and sheeted dykes, the dyke swarms crosscut almost the whole ophiolite …

New La-Icp-Ms U-Pb Zircon Dating For Strandja Granitoids (Se Bulgaria): Evidence For Two-Stage Late Variscan Magmatism In The Internal Balkanides, Philip Machev, Valentin Ganev, Laslo Klain

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Strandja Massif (Sakar-Strandja Zone) forms an important link between the Balkan Zone (external Balkanides) of Bulgaria, which is commonly correlated with the Variscan orogen in Central Europe, and the Western Pontides of Turkey. The Bulgarian part of the massif is composed of a metamorphic basement (various granite gneisses, paragneisses, and schists) traditionally interpreted as having Precambrian age, Triassic-Jurassic metasedimentary cover, and Upper Cretaceous volcanosedimentary sequences. The basement is intruded by large granitic plutons of Variscan age that are widespread mostly across Turkish territory. New LA-ICP-MS data support the suggestion of Variscan granitoid magmatism in the studied area but do …

Thuringian Affinity Of The Silurian?Lower Devonian Succession From The Eastern Taurus, Turkey, Valeri Sachanski, Hüseyi̇n Kozlu, Mehmet Cemal Göncüoğlu Jan 2015

Thuringian Affinity Of The Silurian?Lower Devonian Succession From The Eastern Taurus, Turkey, Valeri Sachanski, Hüseyi̇n Kozlu, Mehmet Cemal Göncüoğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Silurian-Lower Devonian succession in the Değirmentaş-Halevikdere section (E Taurides) shows considerable lithostratigraphic similarities to the three-partite subdivision, initially documented in the same stratigraphic interval in Saxo-Thuringia and later in other peri-Gondwanan terrains. The Llandovery-Wenlockian part of the studied section (ca. 40 m) is characterized by black graptolitic shales. The Llandoverian part is dominated by radiolarian ribbon cherts (ca. 20 m). The Rhuddanian Akidograptus ascensus, Parakidograptus acuminatus, and Cystograptus vesiculosus biozones have been recognized in its lower part, while in the upper part of the succession, the lowermost Telychian Rastrites linnaei Biozone has been documented. The Telychian Spirograptus turriculatus and …

The Importance Of Supersaturated Silica Deposition For Base-Metalau-Ag Mineralisation In Western Turkey, Gülcan Bozkaya, David A. Banks Jan 2015

The Importance Of Supersaturated Silica Deposition For Base-Metalau-Ag Mineralisation In Western Turkey, Gülcan Bozkaya, David A. Banks

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In the Arapuçandere LS-IS epithermal deposit in western Turkey, either well crystallised euhedral quartz or milky amorphous silica occurrences are associated with the precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study has determined the relative importance of the processes precipitating both of these in relation to the deposition of the ore. Analysis by LA-ICPMS of euhedral quartz and amorphous silica show that the latter is associated with much higher metal concentrations and suggests that the process responsible is more important for deposition of ore in the deposit. Mineralisation at Kumarlar and Koru may be similar. Slow cooling precipitates euhedral quartz and some …

The Effects Of Bedding Directions On Abrasion Resistance In Travertine Rocks, Mehmedi̇ Vehbi̇ Gökçe Jan 2015

The Effects Of Bedding Directions On Abrasion Resistance In Travertine Rocks, Mehmedi̇ Vehbi̇ Gökçe

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Travertine rocks are currently used in various architectural applications, cut perpendicular or parallel to bedding planes. Travertine stones used without enough attention paid to the cutting directions easily wear off in locations where pedestrian traffic is heavy and can cause some unexpected complications in practice. This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of cutting directions on the abrasion resistance of travertine stones. Travertine blocks were cut perpendicular and parallel to bedding planes, and their abrasion resistances were determined by means of the Böhme abrasion loss test. Travertine blocks were chosen from 6 different quarries whose products are currently in …

Seismic Hazard Assessment Of Turkey By Statistical Approaches, Serpi̇l Ünal, Sali̇h Çelebi̇oğlu, Bülent Özmen

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this study, 2 probabilistic methods are presented for seismic hazard assessment in Turkey: Markov chains based on modeling the transition probabilities of states (related to the presence or absence of the earthquakes having magnitude M >= 4 during the time interval \Deltat = 0.07 years in each region of Turkey located between 36°N and 42°N and 26°E and 45°E), and the Poisson model, used for computing occurrence probability and recurrence periods of earthquakes. In particular, it should be stated that in this study, our purpose is not to compare the results obtained from these 2 methods. The main purpose …

On The Reconstruction Of Plant Photosynthetic And Stress Physiology Across The Triassic-Jurassic Boundary, Matthew Haworth, Angela Gallagher, Elysia Sum, Marlene Hill-Donnelly, Margret Steinthorsdottir, Jennifer Mcelwain Jan 2014

On The Reconstruction Of Plant Photosynthetic And Stress Physiology Across The Triassic-Jurassic Boundary, Matthew Haworth, Angela Gallagher, Elysia Sum, Marlene Hill-Donnelly, Margret Steinthorsdottir, Jennifer Mcelwain

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Triassic-Jurassic boundary (TJB) coincides with major disruption to the carbon cycle and global warming as the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province developed. This resulted in both marine and terrestrial extinctions, with terrestrial plants thought to experience thermal stress as global temperatures and atmospheric CO_2 levels rose. As plant compression fossils typically only preserve external morphological features, it has not been possible to reconstruct plant paleophysiology in order to elucidate the mechanisms underlying plant stress and extinction. Here we present a new approach allowing us to infer the photosynthetic performance and stress physiology of fossil plants, applied to fossil Ginkgoales across …

A 3d Model For The Formation Of Turtleback Surfaces: The Horzum Turtleback Of Western Turkey As A Case Study, Gürol Seyi̇toğlu, Veysel Işik, Korhan Esat

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Turtleback surfaces are common elements of highly extended terrains all over the world. This paper presents a 3D model explaining the formation of turtleback surfaces based on field observations made on the Horzum Turtleback of the Alaşehir graben, western Turkey. Three essential features have been determined as forming a turtleback surface. These are 1) the rolling hinge mechanism on a normal fault system, where the initial fault stays operational after forming second and third normal faults in its hanging wall; 2) relay ramps between initial fault segments; and 3) a synextensional intrusion on the shear zone of the initial normal …

Ree Geochemical Characteristics Of Titanium-Rich Bauxites: The Permian Kanigorgeh Horizon, Nw Iran, Ali Abedini, Ali Asghar Calagari

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Permian Kanigorgeh bauxite horizon is one of the typical titanium-rich bauxite deposits in the northeast of Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, NW Iran. It is a part of the Irano-Himalayan karst bauxite belt and was developed as discontinuous stratified layers and lenses in Upper Permian carbonates. Mineralogically, diaspore and kaolinite are 2 major mineral phases accompanied by boehmite, smectite, illite, rutile, anatase, hematite, goethite, chlorite, quartz, and plagioclase as minor phases. Geochemical considerations for a selected profile indicate that the concentration values of rare earth elements (REEs) in the bauxite ores range from 8.9 to 200.4 ppm. Eu and Ce …

Antique Quarries Of Marmor Troadense (Nw Turkey): Insights From Field Mapping And Absolute Dating, Enver Vural Yavuz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this study, we present new field and chronological data from 2 antique quarries of marmor troadense (Kestanbol quartz-monzonite) in northwestern Turkey. Marmor troadense has been mined and the building stones have been exported all over the Mediterranean region since approximately 2500 years ago. Analysis of 11 samples from the quarried bedrock for cosmogenic ^{10}Be showed that the landscape is so old that the inheritance obscured the absolute dating of the operation periods. Nonetheless, ^{14}C analysis of 4 charcoal samples from the sediments covering the ruins of Alexandria Troas indicated that these quarries stopped operating no later than 395 AD. …

Bicoelia Corticifera, A New Inozoid Sponge From The Upper Triassic (Norian) Reef Boulders Of The Central Taurids (Southern Turkey), Baba Senowbari-Daryan, Michael Link

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Upper Triassic Norian reef boulders, exposed in a locality in the Central Taurids, southern Turkey, yielded a high number of hypercalcified sponges, including Sphinctozoans, Inozoans, Spongiomorphids, and Chaetetids. The reef boulders are exposed near the fountain Tavuk Çeşme, located at the road leading from the town of Aksu to Yenişarbademli. Geologically this locality belongs to the Anamas Akseki Autochthon. In this paper a new inozoan sponge, Bicoelia corticifera nov. sp., is described from Tavuk Çeşme. It is a cylindrical and unbranched sponge, found in several thin sections. The sponge is characterized by 2 axial spongocoels, and the sponge wall is …

Quaternary Travertine Ridges In The Lake Urmia Area: Active Extension In Nw Iran, Mohammad Mohajjel, Karim Taghipour Jan 2014

Quaternary Travertine Ridges In The Lake Urmia Area: Active Extension In Nw Iran, Mohammad Mohajjel, Karim Taghipour

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Lake Urmia area is surrounded by several major active oblique-slip faults with dextral and normal offsets. Extensive travertine ridges were produced along the E-W up to NW-SE trending extension fractures in the Lake Urmia area, NW Iran. These fractures are parallel to subparallel with abundant normal faults. Pliocene-Quaternary volcanic domes occur in the area and their activities tend toward apparent distinction between colored travertine layers and ridges. Two different modes of banded travertine within the fissures and layered travertine on the surface are observed. Some banded travertines are not vertical and obviously were tilted. Layered travertines were cut, rotated, …

Structural Analyses Of Şaphane Relay Ramps And Fault Linkage Evolution In Active Extensional Regime, Western Turkey, Şule Gürboğa

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Şaphane relay ramps (SAR-I and SAR-II) are well-developed structures formed by extensional tectonic settings in western Turkey. Their formation is controlled by the configuration of 2 different breaching faults located in between and the overlapping area of 3 normal faults, which are the Şaphane, Gürlek, and Yumrutaş faults. The relay ramps form within a ~3 km-wide and ~12 km-long interaction zone between 045° and 060° trending faults on the northern boundary of the Erdoğmuş-Yenigediz graben. Some variations in structural styles and its products (for example, overlapping slip-lines (slickenlines), fractures, and antithetic-synthetic faults) are observed along the breaching faults in …

Utilization Of Petrographic Analysis For Determination Of Petroleum Coke Mixtures, Selami̇ Toprak, Emi̇ne Sütcü, Fatma Jale Gülen

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study was carried out on mostly imported, processed petrocokes, which are also commercially known as “petcoke” or “petroleum coke”. Petrocoke is imported in great amounts and is occasionally consumed domestically without conscientious thought. It is not a well-known material, though there is an idea of its genesis. The samples, their analysis, and their images are essential to be kept in mind for further investigations, since it is not an environmentally friendly material. Petrographic and chemical analyses were conducted on all samples. Trace element and FT-IR analyses were made on a few representative samples. It is possible to distinguish petrocokes …

Geological, Petrological, And Geodynamical Characteristics Of The Karacaali Magmatic Complex (Kırıkkale) In The Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex, Turkey, Ömer Eli̇tok, Şenel Özdamar, Gürkan Bacak, Bektaş Uz Jan 2014

Geological, Petrological, And Geodynamical Characteristics Of The Karacaali Magmatic Complex (Kırıkkale) In The Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex, Turkey, Ömer Eli̇tok, Şenel Özdamar, Gürkan Bacak, Bektaş Uz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Mafic and felsic igneous rocks in the Karacaali Magmatic Complex (KMC) in the northwestern margin of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC) are classified into 4 groups: i) granitoid pluton including granite, granodiorite, and monzonite; ii) a few meter-scale porphyritic microgranite enclaves within the hybrid rocks; iii) hybrid rocks formed by mixing/mingling of mafic lavas (basaltic/diabasic/lamprophyric), anorthositic, and/or rhyolitic lavas; iv) diabasic dykes/veins within the granitoid pluton. Major element composition of the granitoid pluton and porphyritic microgranite enclaves within the hybrid rocks indicate subalkaline, calc-alkaline, and mostly I-type characteristics. These rocks are mainly peraluminous with aluminum saturation index > 1, but …

Sedimentary Record Of Mid-Miocene Seismotectonic Activity In The Sinop Peninsula, North-Central Turkey, Ayhan Ilgar

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The middle Miocene shallow-marine siliciclastic succession in the Sinop Peninsula, north-central Turkey, bears a well-preserved sedimentary record of syndepositional deformation associated with the buried escarpment of an oblique-slip dextral reverse fault and attributed to seismotectonic activity. The deposition occurred in a marginal trough at the edge of a tectonically inverted retroarc foreland basin of the Central Pontides. The synsedimentary deformation involved contemporaneous shoreface deposits and their consolidated, weakly cemented littoral substrate. Deformation features include neptunian dykes, convolute stratification, plumose transposition structure, injection dykes, diapirs, and large sandstone blocks dislodged from the fault escarpment. The genetic sequence of deformation structures deciphered …

Temporal Evolution Of The Water Characteristics In The Bays Along The Eastern Coast Of The Aegean Sea: Saros, İzmir, And Gökova Bays, Canan Eronat, Erdem Sayin

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The seasonal and interannual variability of the local hydrography in 3 bays (Saros, İzmir, and Gökova bays) along the eastern coast of the Aegean Sea are investigated using data sets collected from 1991 to 2010. The data cover the last major deep-water formation episodes and the Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT) relaxation period. Aegean Sea hydrology and water mass characteristics influence the water properties of the bays. The data suggest that Saros Bay (North Aegean Sea), İzmir Bay (Central Aegean Sea), and Gökova Bay (South Aegean Sea) have different physical processes and water characteristics. They have their own dynamics independent from …

The Utility Of Vulnerability Maps And Gis In Groundwater Management: A Case Study, Muhterem Demi̇roğlu, John Dowd Jan 2014

The Utility Of Vulnerability Maps And Gis In Groundwater Management: A Case Study, Muhterem Demi̇roğlu, John Dowd

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Groundwater supplies are experiencing a critical shortage in arid and semiarid regions, as population growth, and hence demand, is not matched by the development of new water supplies. Groundwater is often the only water source in these areas, making the preservation of groundwater quality a critical issue. Powerful tools for groundwater protection are vulnerability maps, which can be used to identify protection zones. A number of factors influence aquifer vulnerability, including geology, geography, land use, and commercial and industrial development. These factors often display a complex spatial pattern easily addressed with GIS. Each factor is entered in the GIS as …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study illustrates the application of the CN algorithm for the analysis of precursory seismicity patterns in the Zagros region (Iran), an area characterized by a complex seismotectonic setting and by remarkable seismic activity. CN is a formally defined and widely tested algorithm for intermediate-term middle-range earthquake prediction, based on the analysis of routinely compiled earthquake catalogs. To allow its application, the global and regional catalogs available for the territory of Iran have been analyzed so as to compile a data set sufficiently complete and homogeneous over a time span of about 3 decades, as required for CN application. A …

Responses Of Carbon Isotope Ratios Of C_3 Herbs To Humidity Index In Northern China, Xianzhao Liu, Qing Su, Chaokui Li, Yong Zhang, Qing Wang

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Uncertainties would exist in the relationship between delta^{13}C values and environmental factors such as temperature, resulting in unreliable reconstruction of paleoclimates. It is therefore important to establish a rational relationship between plant delta^{13}C and a proxy for paleoclimate reconstruction that can comprehensively reflect temperature and precipitation. By measuring the delta^{13}C of a large number of C_3 herbaceous plants growing in different climate zones in northern China and collecting early reported delta^{13}C values of C_3 herbs in this study area, the spatial features of delta^{13}C values of C_3 herbs and their relationships with humidity index were analyzed. The delta^{13}C values of …

The tectonically controlled massive sulfide deposits hosted in the Maastrichtian-Eocene magmatic rocks are either active or have been abandoned. The main ore mineral assemblages are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and pyrite. The oxidation of the sulfide minerals in the deposits and wastes has caused …

Santonian-Campanian Biostratigraphy Of The Kalaat Senan Area (West-Central Tunisia), Zaineb Elamri, Dalila Zaghbib-Turki Jan 2014

Santonian-Campanian Biostratigraphy Of The Kalaat Senan Area (West-Central Tunisia), Zaineb Elamri, Dalila Zaghbib-Turki

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Santonian-Campanian (S/C) transition in the Kalaat Senan area is well exposed in the Assila Wadi (OA) section and consists of marls with indurate glauconitic levels towards the base. Standard Mediterranean ammonite biozonations could not be applied to this section because the biomarkers are absent. However, planktonic foraminiferal biozonation is more reliable for indicating the S/C boundary, and here we propose to use the last appearance datum of Dicarinella asymetrica as the index marker of this boundary. A high-resolution quantitative analysis of the planktonic foraminifera of the OA section allows us to define the main bioevents across the S/C transition …

Early Pleistocene Freshwater Communities And Rodents From The Pasinler Basin (Erzurum Province, North-Eastern Turkey), Davit Vasilyan, Simon Schneider, Memet Sali̇h Bayraktutan, Şevket Şen Jan 2014

Early Pleistocene Freshwater Communities And Rodents From The Pasinler Basin (Erzurum Province, North-Eastern Turkey), Davit Vasilyan, Simon Schneider, Memet Sali̇h Bayraktutan, Şevket Şen

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

An Early Pleistocene lacustrine faunal assemblage from Pasinler (Erzurum Province, north-eastern Turkey) is described, which encompasses 13 mollusc, 5 fish, 2 amphibian, 1 reptile, and 1 mammal species. The autochthonous freshwater mollusc fauna indicates shallow stagnant waters and a fine-sandy to muddy lake bottom, grown with submersed plants. The fish community (Leuciscus sp., Rutilus sp., Chondrostoma sp., Leuciscinae sp. 1 and 2, and Capoeta sp.) and autochthonous herpetofauna (Latonia sp. and Natrix sp.) provide evidence of a well-oxygenised palaeolake with rich periphyton and partially rocky to gravelly bottom. Moreover, the presence of the terrestrial snail Caspicyclotus cf. akramowsii, the peri- …

Neotectonics Of The Zanjan-Kazvin Area, Central Iran: Left Lateral Strike‐Slip Induced Restraining Stepovers, Moosarreza Toori, Gürol Seyi̇toğlu Jan 2014

Neotectonics Of The Zanjan-Kazvin Area, Central Iran: Left Lateral Strike‐Slip Induced Restraining Stepovers, Moosarreza Toori, Gürol Seyi̇toğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The neotectonics of the Zanjan-Kazvin area are dominated by the region-wide E-W trending left lateral strike-slip faults. These faults create restraining and releasing stepovers indicating strain partitioning. Instead of the NW-SE trending long range-parallel continuous thrust faulting suggested in previous studies, this paper demonstrates that there are E-W trending range-crossing left lateral strike-slip faults creating short range-parallel thrust faults in the restraining stepovers. Establishing this strike-slip-induced structural style might contribute to an understanding of the nature of the Elburz (Alborz) Mountains located between the Central Iran and Caspian blocks.

Miocene Palynoflora Of The Kocaçay And Cumaovası Basins: A Contribution To The Synthesis Of Miocene Palynology, Palaeoclimate, And Palaeovegetation In Western Turkey, Mi̇ne Sezgül Kayseri̇ Özer, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r, Funda Akgün

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Palynofloras of the Kocaçay and Cumaovası basins in western Turkey that belong to a time-span from the late Early to late Middle Miocene (the late Burdigalian-Serravallian) are studied and compared with published palynofloras of Europe and Turkey. Palynological data and numerical climatic results obtained by the coexistence approach indicate palaeoclimate changed from warm subtropical to temperate during the late Burdigalian-Serravallian. Moreover, the palaeoclimates of the Kocaçay and Cumaovası basins are compared with continental palaeoclimatic records of coal-bearing sediments in western Turkey and current temperatures in the İzmir region. According to this comparison, palaeoclimatic results of these basins and other localities …
