Joint Map Of Warren County, Kentucky, Steven L. Martin, Emily R. Morris Apr 2026

Joint Map Of Warren County, Kentucky, Steven L. Martin, Emily R. Morris

Map and Chart--KGS

This fracture map is a compilation of joint locations and faults mapped in Warren County, Kentucky, and provides orientations of fractures (joints and faults) for hydrological, geotechnical, slope stability, and rockfall mitigation analysis. The joint data include orientations collected from 2023 to 2024, and those collected during the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) geologic mapping of the Woodburn 7.5 -minute quadrangle (Shawe, 1963c). New joint orientations were measured to fill gaps in the published geologic map data. Joints are fractures with no appreciable movement parallel to the fracture plane and only slight movement normal to the fracture plane, whereas faults exhibit …

The Eye: A Science-Fiction Screenplay Examining Space-Time, Meteorology, And Human Connection, Ella K. Lukowiak Apr 2026

The Eye: A Science-Fiction Screenplay Examining Space-Time, Meteorology, And Human Connection, Ella K. Lukowiak

Senior Theses

This thesis explores the nature of time, meteorology, and human interconnection to the universe through the lens of a science-fiction screenplay. The creative project spans a three-act, detailed outline, and a screenplay draft of Act I. It is based upon extensive scientific research regarding hurricane development, the inner workings of organizations such as the National Weather Service, Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, and the space-time continuum. I will delve into the various factors that shaped my science-fiction premise, including pivotal films such as Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR (2014) and Denis Villeneuve’s ARRIVAL (2016). Both of these filmmakers integrated complex science-fiction concepts into …

Machine Learning And Multisensor Data Fusion For Forest Above Ground Biomass Estimation In Arkansas, Abdullah Al Saim, Mohamed Aly Apr 2026

Machine Learning And Multisensor Data Fusion For Forest Above Ground Biomass Estimation In Arkansas, Abdullah Al Saim, Mohamed Aly

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Forests are essential for biodiversity conservation, climate change, natural education, scientific research, and carbon sequestration. This study uses machine learning-based Random Forest (RF) regression to estimate the Above Ground Biomass (AGB) of the Ozark and Ouachita forests at a 10-meter resolution by combining data from Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, and GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation) on Google Earth Engine. The RF model included 34 out of 154 variables representing topographical, spectral, and textural factors demonstrating strong correlations with measured biomass. The RF model showed strong performance with R-squared and RMSE values of 0.95 and 18.46 for the training dataset and 0.75 and …

Continuous Imaging Of The Shallow Subsurface Of Horry County Using Gpr And Auger Data, Chase William Robinson Apr 2026

Continuous Imaging Of The Shallow Subsurface Of Horry County Using Gpr And Auger Data, Chase William Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

Welded barrier systems are common along passive margins globally and make up approximately 15% of the coastlines around the world. The subsurface facies assemblages of welded barrier systems record depositional histories and past sea-level dynamics, but their complicated depositional architecture can be problematic for understanding aspects like groundwater flow and freshwater-saltwater exchange. Most studies of modern welded barrier sedimentary systems using ground penetrating radar (GPR) rely on a few 100 meters of subsurface data supplemented with a few drill cores. In this study, we used over 75 km of 100MHz and 25MHz GPR data and 195 auger drill logs collected …

Effect Of Light Elements On The Melting Behavior Of Liquid Iron Alloys Under Earth’S Inner Core Boundary Conditions, Olaniyi Anisere Mar 2026

Effect Of Light Elements On The Melting Behavior Of Liquid Iron Alloys Under Earth’S Inner Core Boundary Conditions, Olaniyi Anisere

LSU Master's Theses

The temperature at Earth’s inner core boundary (ICB) is set by the melting temperature of the iron-rich outer core at core pressures, yet this remains uncertain because melting depends strongly on composition and pressure. Light elements are required to explain the core’s density deficit, but the identity, abundance, and combined influence of these elements on melting under ICB conditions are still debated. This thesis quantifies how candidate light elements modify the melting behavior of iron alloys at ICB-relevant pressures and uses these composition-dependent melting relations to constrain ICB temperature.

Melting relations were determined using molecular dynamics simulations in VASP accelerated …

Reconstructing 5000 Years Of Hurricane Activity In Holyrood Pond Using Sediment Core Analysis, Jamie Mclaulin, Arielle Nogueira, Elizabeth Wallace Mar 2026

Reconstructing 5000 Years Of Hurricane Activity In Holyrood Pond Using Sediment Core Analysis, Jamie Mclaulin, Arielle Nogueira, Elizabeth Wallace

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

Hurricanes are hazardous and costly events that annually negatively impact people that live in coastal areas in North America.  The current observational record of hurricanes is short (1970- present) and does not offer insight into the effects of climate change on hurricane frequency.  One method of improving and extending our observational record of hurricanes is to reconstruct paleohurricanes using sediment cores.  These cores record hurricane activity in the form of coarse-grained overwash layers that are deposited when hurricanes move sand from beaches into backbarrier ponds.  In this project, we analyzed sediment cores from Atlantic Canada to locate coarse-grained storm layers …

Perturbations To Horizontal Gnss Position Time Series By Atmospheric Lee Waves In The San Bernardino Valley, California, Walter Szeliga, Logan Grey Mar 2026

Perturbations To Horizontal Gnss Position Time Series By Atmospheric Lee Waves In The San Bernardino Valley, California, Walter Szeliga, Logan Grey

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Anomalous systematic position offsets have been noted in GNSS time series from a variety of locations around the globe. In many regions, these time series anomalies coincide with the presence of cloud streets in visible satellite imagery, implicating atmospheric lee waves as the source of the position offsets. We report here on seasonal anomalous position offsets from the San Bernardino Basin of southern California that occur during clear skies. Modeling of the troposphere on days with anomalous positions shows the presence of atmospheric lee waves. Ray tracing through these tropospheric models suggests that atmospheric lee waves create low elevation perturbations …

Geology Lab Activities An Open Educational Resource For Community College Students And Instructors, Rondi Davies, Ari Nakamura Mar 2026

Geology Lab Activities An Open Educational Resource For Community College Students And Instructors, Rondi Davies, Ari Nakamura

Open Educational Resources

I'm delighted to present the updated version of Geology Lab Activities, initially developed during the COVID-19 pandemic for online learning. As we have returned to the classroom, this revised edition remains a versatile educational tool for community college students, adaptable for both online and in-person classes.

This manual combines my preferred open-access materials with my own contributions, forming a cohesive resource for non-major geology students. Thanks to a CUNY OER grant, I partnered with graphic designer Ari Nakamura, whose innovative and elegant design has truly elevated the book.

Our labs are crafted to be engaging and relevant for non-major …
