Migration Characteristics And Storage Forms Of Liquid And Supercritical Co2 In Saline Aquifers, Peng Xiyi, Wang Yanyong, Li Song, Wang Xiaoguang, Cui Guodong, He Yongming

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective CO2 storage in saline aquifers serves as a critical technology used to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Owing to the low-temperature marine environment and the pressure from overlying seawater, shallow offshore saline aquifers exhibit significantly different temperature and pressure conditions compared to onshore saline aquifers at equivalent burial depths, allowing CO2 to occur in a liquid state. Compared to supercritical CO2, liquid CO2 features higher density, viscosity, and solubility in formation water, which affect the CO2 migration and storage processes. Previous studies focus primarily on supercritical CO2, lacking a deep understanding …

A Temporal Fusion Method For Modeling The Rate Of Penetration During Deep Geological Drilling, Zhou Yang, Lu Chengda, Wu Min, Chen Xin, Yao Ningping, Song Haitao, Zhang Youzhen

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective Given that the rate of penetration (ROP) serves as a key indicator of drilling efficiency, constructing an accurate ROP model holds great significance for optimizing drilling processes and reducing drilling costs. However, deep geological drilling faces challenges such as nonlinearity, non-convex optimization, multiple operating conditions, and temporal variations. Consequently, traditional modeling methods are difficult to adapt to complex geologic environments. Methods To address these challenges, this study proposed a fusion method combined with temporal regulation for ROP modeling: the SVR-MDBO method. Initially, a basic ROP model was constructed using support vector regression (SVR) to solve the nonlinear problem caused …

Frequency-Domain Induced Polarization Responses Of Water-Bearing Anomalous Bodies In The Roadway Tunneling Direction In Coal Mines, Hu Xiongwu, Hu Yuanrong, Wu Rongxin, Yu Hao

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective A frequency-domain induced polarization (FDIP) method enables the observation of critical electrical parameters such as frequency dispersivity and complex resistivity of geological bodies, mitigating the multiplicity of solutions in the interpretations of electrical anomalies. This method has emerged as a primary technique for electric method-based advance water detection during roadway tunneling in coal mines. However, the FDIP method primarily focuses on data observation in the direction opposite to roadway tunneling, exhibiting a limited capacity to capture geoelectric information in the roadway tunneling direction. This leads to practical challenges such as unclear orientations of water-bearing anomalous bodies. Therefore, exploring the …

The structure, function, and dynamics of Earth's terrestrial ecosystems are profoundly influenced by how often (frequency) and how long (duration) they are inundated with water. A diverse array of natural and human-engineered systems experience temporally variable inundation whereby they fluctuate between inundated and non-inundated states. Variable inundation spans extreme events to predictable sub-daily cycles. Variably inundated ecosystems (VIEs) include hillslopes, non-perennial streams, wetlands, floodplains, temporary ponds, tidal systems, storm-impacted coastal zones, and human-engineered systems. VIEs are diverse in terms of inundation regimes, water chemistry and flow velocity, soil and sediment properties, vegetation, and many other properties. The spatial and temporal …

The Chicxulub impact is the most likely cause of the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary (KPB) mass extinction and the only impact event in Earth's history with a globally traceable ejecta bed. Although the impact spherules are thought to represent molten or vaporized material, precise genesis and transport mechanisms remain underconstrained. Here, we show that the morphology, size, internal structure, and distribution of the spherules within the KPB deposits are related to origin and transport processes. The study of thousands of spherules from KPB deposits in Colombia, the USA, and Spain has revealed the presence of three fractions related to three different distribution …

The Chicxulub asteroid that ended the Cretaceous Era ∼66.05 million years ago caused a prolonged time of global darkness – the impact winter – leading to mass extinctions. Elements from the asteroid, including the platinum group elements (PGEs) osmium, iridium and platinum are known from the globally distributed boundary clay but their carrier elements have so far been unknown. We identify, for the first time in detail, the presence of these PGEs within Chicxulub impact spherules and importantly, we identify their carrier elements. We show through synchrotron Nano-XRF how these PGEs occur in nanostructures as un-ordered cube- and/or needle-like crystals …

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets - Archive

Hydrothermal explosions are a significant geological hazard in some active volcanic systems; however, the timing and triggering mechanisms of these explosions are poorly constrained. This study applies luminescence dating techniques to hydrothermal explosion deposits in the Yellowstone Plateau volcanic field to constrain explosion chronologies and evaluate potential triggering mechanisms. We tested four luminescence dating techniques: K-feldspar post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (pIRIR225), quartz blue light optically stimulated luminescence (BLOSL), quartz blue thermoluminescence (BTL), and quartz red thermoluminescence (RTL). The pIRIR225 and RTL protocols produce consistent age estimates that agree with independent radiocarbon ages and with the timing of the Pinedale deglaciation. …

Development Of Soil Survey Methods For Urban Areas, Kohinoor Begum

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Urban soils are the foundation of urban ecosystems and play a vital role in long-term urban sustainability and resiliency. Accurate soil surveys of urban areas should be done at higher resolution since extensive human activities often result in urban soil being highly disturbed and spatially variable. Besides heterogeneity, one of the unique and challenging aspects of urban soil is the nature and properties of its organic carbon with a significant percentage of black carbon (a particulate product of incomplete combustion), which is less biologically active. Thus, in order to determine the ability of a soil to support biological activity and …

The intersection between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and Iceland hotspot provides a natural laboratory where the composition and dynamics of Earth's upper mantle can be observed. Plume-ridge interaction drives variations in the melting regime, which result in a range of crustal types, including a series of V-shaped ridges (VSRs) and V-shaped troughs (VSTs) located south of Iceland. Mantle upwelling beneath Iceland dynamically supports regional bathymetry, and its variations may lead to changes in the height of oceanic gateways, which in turn control the flow of deep water on geologic timescales. Expeditions 384, 395C, and 395 recovered extensive successions of basaltic crust …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The prevalent catalog-based Landslide Susceptibility Modelling (LSM) operates under the assumption that future landslide occurrences mirror past and current patterns. Due to growing urban expansion and climate change, certain landslides follow new patterns of occurrence, disrupting the foundational assumption of catalog-based LSM and leading to constraints in the effectiveness of traditional susceptibility maps. Here, to address this problem, we proposed a method to produce more accurate and dynamic landslide susceptibility maps by coupling advanced Ensemble Machine Learning (EML) and Multi-Temporal Interferometric SAR (MT-InSAR). The Wanzhou District in Three Gorges Reservoir area of China is considered as the test site. The …

However, production practices reveal that the commingled production of CBM exhibits complex and varied effects and controlling factors, facing technical challenges of identifying gas-producing contributions, predicting gas-producing potential, and optimizing pay interval combinations. The superposition of desorption for gas production among different coal seams determines whether high CBM production can be achieved using commingled production. Methods This study proposed an analytical method for the desorption superposition effect in the commingled production of CBM, involving determining desorption sequences, analyzing the superposition of desorption intervals …

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective The deformations and rupture of rocks under loading will cause potential changes in parameters. Dynamic parameter capture assists in characterizing the generation, propagation, and closure processes of fractures, serving as a significant method for assessing rock quality. Methods Using a multiparameter test system, this study synchronously acquired strain measured using distributed optic fibers, electrode current, and compressional wave (P-wave) velocities of rock specimens under uniaxial loading. Accordingly, this study determined strength vs. parameter characteristic relationship graphs and parametric tomography results, finely describing the multiparameter spatiotemporal evolutionary characteristics of three typical rocks (i.e., sandstone, limestone, and mudstone) throughout the loading …
