Toward Mapping Multiphase Multicomponent Mixtures With Neural Networks, Kristen L. Hallas, Melissa De Jesus, Christine J. Wu, Jianzhi Li, Jason Bernstein, Philip C. Myint

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Equation of state (EOS) tables are commonly used in hydrodynamic simulations of high-pressure, high-temperature phenomena in fields like planetary science, astrophysics, and high-energy-density science. However, generating and storing EOS tables for multiphase, multicomponent mixtures over a wide range of pressures and temperatures is computationally infeasible due to their memory-intensive nature. To address this issue, we have developed a neural network-based machine learning model to predict new EOS tables for binary mixtures. In particular, a deep feedforward neural network trained on a set of ten EOS tables at particular mixture compositions is able to predict nine new (hold-out) EOS tables at …

Dynamic Approaches To Missing Data In Healthcare: Evaluating Ensemble Models, Feature Selection, And Meta-Features, Dylan Dominguez Sulca May 2025

Dynamic Approaches To Missing Data In Healthcare: Evaluating Ensemble Models, Feature Selection, And Meta-Features, Dylan Dominguez Sulca

Theses and Dissertations

Missing data is pervasive in healthcare, where incomplete observations commonly arise from patient dropout, sensor failures, or privacy constraints. This research presents an investigation into handling such data, focusing on (1) Missingness-Aware Dynamic Ensemble Weighting (MDEW), (2) feature selection under varying missing rates, (3) autoencoder-based imputation (ODAE), and (4) a meta-feature analysis guiding pipeline selection. We evaluate our experiments on four diverse datasets, Cleveland Heart Disease, Diabetic Retinopathy, Breast Cancer Wisconsin, EEG Eye State. Our research shows that MDEW adaptively selects imputer classifier pipelines, outperforming single model and uniform averaging baselines at moderate to high missingness 10% to 50%. Filter …

Implementation Of Time Series And Neural Networks For Forecasting Agricultural Prices In The Irish Market: A Comparative Analysis Of Milk, Beef, And Potatoes., César Augusto Núñez

ICT

Agricultural price volatility represents a central challenge for the Irish agri-food sector, affecting the stability of producers, cooperatives, and policymakers. This study aimed to compare three predictive approaches applied to strategic commodities such as milk, beef, and potatoes: a traditional statistical time series model (SARIMA) and two deep learning architectures (RNN and LSTM). Using historical price series collected over a decade, the models were developed and evaluated following a rigorous methodological process that included data preparation, algorithm training, and validation of results using performance metrics widely used in time series research. The findings show that the SARIMA model was most …

This dissertation addresses critical challenges in neural network design by leveraging entropy-based techniques to improve model efficiency, interpretability, and bias reduction. Focusing on the unique demands of computer vision applications, particularly object detection and classification for real-time systems, this work introduces a series of innovative methods centered on information theory. At the core of these methods is the Probabilistic Explanations of Entropic Knowledge (PEEK) framework, a tool developed to analyze and visualize entropy distributions across feature maps. PEEK offers insights into information flow within neural networks, making it possible to pinpoint layers that contribute meaningfully to decision-making or identify those …

Mathematically Rigorous Deep Learning Paradigms For Data-Driven Scientific Modeling, Owen Nicholas Davis Apr 2024

Mathematically Rigorous Deep Learning Paradigms For Data-Driven Scientific Modeling, Owen Nicholas Davis

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This dissertation explores the crucial role of data-driven modeling in science and engineering, with a focus on developing surrogate models to accelerate large-scale computational tasks, aiding in both outer-loop functions like uncertainty quantification and expensive inner-loop tasks within broader computational frameworks. Challenges arise with increased problem dimension and sparse, noisy training data, particularly significant when constructing surrogates for very expensive computational models where acquiring sufficient high-fidelity training data is unfeasible. In such scenarios, training surrogates from an ensemble of multifidelity information sources of varying accuracy and cost becomes essential. We emphasize neural network-based modeling paradigms, which are flexible in integrating …

Automated Image Registration For Titanium Aircraft Components Via Resolution-Robust Parallel Neural Networks, Paige T. Luebbering Mar 2024

Automated Image Registration For Titanium Aircraft Components Via Resolution-Robust Parallel Neural Networks, Paige T. Luebbering

Theses and Dissertations

Titanium alloys are vital to the structural integrity of military and commercial aircraft, comprising numerous critical components. These components are composed of microtexture regions (MTRs) that, at a specific size and orientation, can lead to aircraft failure. Existing MTR testing methods, such as Electron Backscatter Diffraction, often fall short in effectively detecting these MTRs without causing damage to the component. Addressing this gap, this thesis develops a Parallel Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model tailored for multi-resolution image registration of Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) images to enhance MTR identification in a non-invasive manner. The findings reveal a significant enhancement in the …

Strategies To Combine 3d Vasculature And Brain Cta With Deep Neural Networks: Application To Lvo, Uma M Lal-Trehan Estrada, Arnau Oliver, Sunil A Sheth, Xavier Lladó, Luca Giancardo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Automated tools to detect large vessel occlusion (LVO) in acute ischemic stroke patients using brain computed tomography angiography (CTA) have been shown to reduce the time for treatment, leading to better clinical outcomes. There is a lot of information in a single CTA and deep learning models do not have an obvious way of being conditioned on areas most relevant for LVO detection, i.e., the vasculature structure. In this work, we compare and contrast strategies to make convolutional neural networks focus on the vasculature without discarding context information of the brain parenchyma and propose an attention-inspired strategy to encourage this. …

Bayesian Neural Netwok Variational Autoencoder Inverse Mapper (Bnn-Vaim) And Its Application In Compton Form Factors Extraction, Md Fayaz Bin Hossen, Tareq Alghamdi, Manal Almaeen, Yaohang Li

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We extend the Variational Autoencoder Inverse Mapper (VAIM) framework for the inverse problem of extracting Compton Form Factors (CFFs) from deeply virtual exclusive reactions, such as the unpolarized Deeply virtual exclusive scattering (DVCS) cross section. VAIM is an end-to-end deep learning framework to address the solution ambiguity issue in ill-posed inverse problems, which comprises of a forward mapper and a backward mapper to simulate the forward and inverse processes, respectively. In particular, we incorporate Bayesian Neural Network (BNN) into the VAIM architecture (BNN-VAIM) for uncertainty quantification. By sampling the weights and biases distributions of the BNN in the backward mapper …

Uavs And Deep Neural Networks: An Alternative Approach To Monitoring Waterfowl At The Site Level, Zachary J. Loken Nov 2023

Uavs And Deep Neural Networks: An Alternative Approach To Monitoring Waterfowl At The Site Level, Zachary J. Loken

LSU Master's Theses

Understanding how waterfowl respond to habitat restoration and management activities is crucial for evaluating and refining conservation delivery programs. However, site-specific waterfowl monitoring is challenging, especially in heavily forested systems such as the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV)—a primary wintering region for ducks in North America. I hypothesized that using uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) coupled with deep learning-based methods for object detection would provide an efficient and effective means for surveying non-breeding waterfowl on difficult-to-access restored wetland sites. Accordingly, during the winters of 2021 and 2022, I surveyed wetland restoration easements in the MAV using a UAV equipped with a dual …

Effects Of Weight Initialization Methods On Ffn's, Ida K. Karem Sep 2023

Effects Of Weight Initialization Methods On Ffn's, Ida K. Karem

The Cardinal Edge

Weight initialization is the method of determining starting values of weights in a neural network. The way this method is done can have massive effects on the network[2, 3, 6, 9] and can halt training if not handled properly. On the other hand, if initialization is chosen tactfully it can improve training and accuracy greatly. The initialization method usually called Normalized Xavier will be referred to as Nox in this paper to avoid confusion with the Xavier initialization method. This study analyzes five methods of weight initialization(Nox, He, Xavier, Plutonian, and Self-Root), two of them …

Physics-Guided Deep Learning For Solar Wind Modeling At L1 Point, Robert M. Johnson Aug 2023

Physics-Guided Deep Learning For Solar Wind Modeling At L1 Point, Robert M. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Neural networks are adept at finding patterns that are too long and too small for humans to find in data. Usually, this power is used to generate predictions with greater accuracy than most alternative models. However, we can also use this power to understand more about the data we train these networks on. We do this by changing the data that the networks train on and the data they are tested on. This allows us to both control the maximum length of a pattern and to compare data between different groups, in our case, different solar cycles. This thesis is …

An Analysis Of Text-Based Machine Learning Models For Vulnerability Detection, Kollin Ryne Napier May 2023

An Analysis Of Text-Based Machine Learning Models For Vulnerability Detection, Kollin Ryne Napier

Theses and Dissertations

With an increase in complexity of software, developers rely more on reuse and dependencies in their source code via code snippets. As a result, it is becoming harder to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities. Although traditional analysis tools are still utilized, machine learning models are being adopted to expand efforts and combat such threats. Given the possibilities towards usage of such models, research in this area has introduced various approaches which vary in usability and prediction. In generalizing models to a more natural language approach, researchers have opted to train models on source code to identify existing and potential vulnerabilities. Exploratory …

Nviz: Unraveling Neural Networks Through Visualization, Kevin Hoffman

Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics Presentations

The growing utility of artificial intelligence (AI) is attributed to the development of neural networks. These networks are a class of models that make predictions based on previously observed data. While the inferential power of neural networks is great, the ability to explain their results is difficult because the underlying model is automatically generated. The AI community commonly refers to neural networks as black boxes because the patterns they learn from the data are not easily understood. This project aims to improve the visibility of patterns that neural networks identify in data. Through an interactive web application, NVIZ affords the …

Emotion Classification Of Indonesian Tweets Using Bidirectional Lstm, Aaron K. Glenn, Phillip M. Lacasse, Bruce A. Cox

Faculty Publications

Emotion classification can be a powerful tool to derive narratives from social media data. Traditional machine learning models that perform emotion classification on Indonesian Twitter data exist but rely on closed-source features. Recurrent neural networks can meet or exceed the performance of state-of-the-art traditional machine learning techniques using exclusively open-source data and models. Specifically, these results show that recurrent neural network variants can produce more than an 8% gain in accuracy in comparison with logistic regression and SVM techniques and a 15% gain over random forest when using FastText embeddings. This research found a statistical significance in the performance of …

Neural Networks And Stochastic Differential Equations, Stephanie L. Flores

Theses and Dissertations

Influenced by the seminal work, “Physics Informed Neural Networks” by Raissi et al., 2017, there has been a growing interest in solving and parameter estimation of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (PDE) with Deep Neural networks in recent years. In fact, this has broadened the pathways and shed light on deep learning of stochastic differential equations (SDE) and stochastic PDE’s (SPDE).In this work, we intend to investigate the current approaches of solving and parameter estimation of the SDE/SPDE with deep neural networks and the possibility of extending them to obtain more accurate/stable solutions with residual systems and/or generative adversarial neural networks. …

Computational Approaches To Facilitate Automated Interchange Between Music And Art, Rao Hamza Ali May 2022

Computational Approaches To Facilitate Automated Interchange Between Music And Art, Rao Hamza Ali

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Recently, there has been a tremendous increase in generating and synthesizing music and art using various computational techniques. An area that is still under-researched, however, is how one medium can be converted into the other, while maintaining the overall aesthetics. Over the last few centuries, artists, composers, and scholars, have attempted to use substitute one form of art for the other: by proposing techniques where music notes are synonymous to colors, by inventing instruments that combine the aesthetics of music and visual art, and by incorporating the two media in live performances. A widely accepted computational approach, for the conversion, …

Generalized Robust Feature Selection, Bradford L. Lott Mar 2022

Generalized Robust Feature Selection, Bradford L. Lott

Theses and Dissertations

Feature selection may be summarized as identifying salient features to a given response. Understanding which features affect the response enables, in the future, only collecting consequential data; hence, the feature selection algorithm may lead to saving effort spent collecting data, storage resources, as well as computational resources for making predictions. We propose a generalized approach to select the salient features of data sets. Our approach may also be applied to unsupervised datasets to understand which data streams provide unique information. We contend our approach identifies salient features robust to the sub-sequent predictive model applied. The proposed algorithm considers all provided …

Data-Driven Damage Initiation Criteria For Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Alexander Richard Post Nov 2021

Data-Driven Damage Initiation Criteria For Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Alexander Richard Post

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

Computational progressive failure analysis (PFA) is vital for the design, verification, and validation of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. However, the computational cost of PFA is usually high due to the complexity of the model. The damage initiation criterion is one of the essential components of a PFA code to determine the transition of a material’s state from pristine or microscopically damaged to macroscopically damaged. In this thesis, data-driven models are developed to determine the matrix damage initiation based on the Mohr-Coulomb model and Hashin model. For 2D plane stress states, the computational cost for determining damage initiation can …

Using Deep Learning To Analyze Materials In Medical Images, Carson Molder May 2021

Using Deep Learning To Analyze Materials In Medical Images, Carson Molder

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Modern deep learning architectures have become increasingly popular in medicine, especially for analyzing medical images. In some medical applications, deep learning image analysis models have been more accurate at predicting medical conditions than experts. Deep learning has also been effective for material analysis on photographs. We aim to leverage deep learning to perform material analysis on medical images. Because material datasets for medicine are scarce, we first introduce a texture dataset generation algorithm that automatically samples desired textures from annotated or unannotated medical images. Second, we use a novel Siamese neural network called D-CNN to predict patch similarity and build …

Reliable And Interpretable Machine Learning For Modeling Physical And Cyber Systems, Daniel L. Marino Lizarazo Jan 2021

Reliable And Interpretable Machine Learning For Modeling Physical And Cyber Systems, Daniel L. Marino Lizarazo

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past decade, Machine Learning (ML) research has predominantly focused on building extremely complex models in order to improve predictive performance. The idea was that performance can be improved by adding complexity to the models. This approach proved to be successful in creating models that can approximate highly complex relationships while taking advantage of large datasets. However, this approach led to extremely complex black-box models that lack reliability and are difficult to interpret. By lack of reliability, we specifically refer to the lack of consistent (unpredictable) behavior in situations outside the training data. Lack of interpretability refers to the …

Convolutional Audio Source Separation Applied To Drum Signal Separation, Marius Orehovschi Jan 2021

Convolutional Audio Source Separation Applied To Drum Signal Separation, Marius Orehovschi

Honors Theses

This study examined the task of drum signal separation from full music mixes via both classical methods (Independent Component Analysis) and a combination of Time-Frequency Binary Masking and Convolutional Neural Networks. The results indicate that classical methods relying on predefined computations do not achieve any meaningful results, while convolutional neural networks can achieve imperfect but musically useful results. Furthermore, neural network performance can be improved by data augmentation via transposition – a technique that can only be applied in the context of drum signal separation.

Image Features For Tuberculosis Classification In Digital Chest Radiographs, Brian Hooper Jan 2020

Image Features For Tuberculosis Classification In Digital Chest Radiographs, Brian Hooper

All Master's Theses

Tuberculosis (TB) is a respiratory disease which affects millions of people each year, accounting for the tenth leading cause of death worldwide, and is especially prevalent in underdeveloped regions where access to adequate medical care may be limited. Analysis of digital chest radiographs (CXRs) is a common and inexpensive method for the diagnosis of TB; however, a trained radiologist is required to interpret the results, and is subject to human error. Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) systems are a promising machine-learning based solution to automate the diagnosis of TB from CXR images. As the dimensionality of a high-resolution CXR image is very …

Extreme Data Mining: Inference From Small Datasets, Răzvan Andonie Sep 2010

Extreme Data Mining: Inference From Small Datasets, Răzvan Andonie

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Neural networks have been applied successfully in many fields. However, satisfactory results can only be found under large sample conditions. When it comes to small training sets, the performance may not be so good, or the learning task can even not be accomplished. This deficiency limits the applications of neural network severely. The main reason why small datasets cannot provide enough information is that there exist gaps between samples, even the domain of samples cannot be ensured. Several computational intelligence techniques have been proposed to overcome the limits of learning from small datasets.

We have the following goals: i. To …

Artificial Intelligence – I: A Two-Step Approach For Improving Efficiency Of Feedforward Multilayer Perceptrons Network, Shoukat Ullah, Zakia Hussain

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

An artificial neural network has got greater importance in the field of data mining. Although it may have complex structure, long training time, and uneasily understandable representation of results, neural network has high accuracy and is preferable in data mining. This research paper is aimed to improve efficiency and to provide accurate results on the basis of same behaviour data. To achieve these objectives, an algorithm is proposed that uses two data mining techniques, that is, attribute selection method and cluster analysis. The algorithm works by applying attribute selection method to eliminate irrelevant attributes, so that input dimensionality is reduced …
