High-entropy alloys (HEA) are a very new development in the field of metallurgical materials. They are made up of multiple principle atoms unlike traditional alloys, which contributes to their high configurational entropy. The microstructure and properties of HEAs are are not well predicted with the models developed for more common engineering alloys, and there is not enough data available on HEAs to fully represent the complex behavior of these alloys. This dissertation documents an investigation into Parkinson’s Disease utilizing machine learning and causal inference methods. I will cover a descriptive analysis of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) in a vast, high-quality database and present costs associated with Parkinson’s Disease medications. I also researched a causal inference method assessing the Carbidopa-Levodopa effect on two-year survival and a causal survival analysis on a one-to-five-year survival comparing no drug use and Carbidopa-Levodopa in Parkinson’s Disease patients.

Data collected from the real world is often imbalanced, meaning that the distribution of data across known classes is biased or skewed. When using machine learning classification models on such imbalanced data, predictive performance tends to be lower because these models are designed with the assumption of balanced classes or a relatively equal number of instances for each class. To address this issue, we employ data preprocessing techniques such as SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique) for oversampling data and random undersampling for undersampling data on unbalanced datasets. This thesis describes a variety of approaches in examining how language models encode stereotypes (understanding stereotypes from a model point-of-view), debiasing language models, and using language models to understand how stereotypes affect conversations (understanding stereotypes from a conversational point-of-view). We present a novel approach for textual clues analysis that makes language models more interpretable, combining the understanding of what stereotypes the internal structures of language models have encoded during their initial training (via attention-based analysis) and understanding what textual clues are most relevant to identifying stereotypes for models trained to detect stereotypes (via SHAP-based analysis). The relationship between heat and harmful outcomes is well documented, with research connecting various adverse economic outcomes to the climate. In the presence of increasing global warming and climate change, understanding why the climate leads to negative economic outcomes is essential for forming peaceful institutions of the future. We study how behavioral economic outcomes change in the presence of heat through a lab experiment involving 1,110 observations conducted in five different countries. Computer-based feedback is an increasingly common tool in mathematics education. The feedback that such programs provide can range from indicating whether an answer was correct, to giving an answer or worked out solution or suggesting a similar practice problem. One type of computer-based feedback, the Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), is able to provide feedback not just once per problem, but at multiple points during the process of solving a problem. Creating an ITS that gives feedback for even a narrow topic is often a time-intensive process, and machine learning is only recently being integrated into the ITS authoring process.

The Pearson correlation coefficient is a commonly used measure of correlation, but it has limitations as it only measures the linear relationship between two numerical variables. In 2007, Szekely et al. introduced the distance correlation, which measures all types of dependencies between random vectors X and Y in arbitrary dimensions, not just the linear ones. Microfossil dinosaur teeth are studied by paleontologists in order to better under- stand dinosaurs. Currently, tooth classification is a long, manual, error-ridden process. Deep learning offers a solution that allows for an automated way of classifying images of these microfossil teeth. In this thesis, we aimed to use deep learning in order to develop an automated approach for classifying images of Pectinodon bakkeri teeth. The proposed model was trained using a custom topology and it classified the images based on clusters created via K-Means. Lower-limb amputations can cause a plethora of obstacles that lead to a lower quality of life. Implementing machine learning techniques means advanced prosthetics can contribute to facilitating the lives of those that live with lower-limb amputations. Using the publicly available HuGaDB data set, the current study investigates several classification models (random forest, neural network, and Vowpal Wabbit) to predict the locomotive intentions of individuals using lower-limb prostheses. The results of this study show that the neural network model yielded the highest accuracy, comparable precision, and recall scores to the other models. Building on previous work to define the scientific discipline of biomedical informatics, we present a framework that categorizes fundamental challenges into groups based on data, information, and knowledge, along with the transitions between these levels. We define each level and argue that the framework provides a basis for separating informatics problems from non-informatics problems, identifying fundamental challenges in biomedical informatics, and provides guidance regarding the search for general, reusable solutions to informatics problems. Revealing three-dimensional (3D) magnetic textures with vector field electron tomography (VFET) is essential in studying novel magnetic materials with topologically protected spin textures potentially being used in the next-generation semiconductor industry. In this dissertation, we use machine learning (ML) models to reconstruct 3D magnetic textures from electron holography (EH) data.

Breast density screenings are an accepted means to determine a patient's predisposed risk of breast cancer development. Although the direct correlation is not fully understood, breast cancer risk increases with higher levels of mammographic breast density. Radiologists visually assess a patient's breast density using mammogram images and assign a density score based on four breast density categories outlined by the Breast Imaging and Reporting Data Systems (BI-RADS). There have been efforts to develop automated tools that assist radiologists with increasing workloads and to help reduce the intra- and inter-rater variability between radiologists.
