With the reduction of sequencing costs and the pervasiveness of computing devices, genomic data collection is continually growing. However, data collection is highly fragmented and the data is still siloed across different repositories. Analyzing all of this data would be transformative for genomics research. However, the data is sensitive, and therefore cannot be easily centralized. Furthermore, there may be correlations in the data, which if not detected, can impact the analysis. In this paper, we take the first step towards identifying correlated records across multiple data repositories in a privacy-preserving manner. The proposed framework, based on random shuffling, synthetic record …

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal patient level data available in the electronic health record (EHR) allows for the development, implementation, and validations of dental quality measures (eMeasures).
OBJECTIVE: We report the feasibility and validity of implementing two eMeasures. The eMeasures determined the proportion of patients receiving a caries risk assessment (eCRA) and corresponding appropriate risk-based preventative treatments for patients at elevated risk of caries (appropriateness of care [eAoC]) in two academic institutions and one accountable care organization, in the 2019 reporting year.
METHODS: Both eMeasures define the numerator and denominator beginning at the patient level, populations' specifications, and validated the automated queries. For …
Realtime Event Detection In Sports Sensor Data With Machine Learning, Mallory Cashman
Realtime Event Detection In Sports Sensor Data With Machine Learning, Mallory Cashman
Honors Theses and Capstones
Machine learning models can be trained to classify time series based sports motion data, without reliance on assumptions about the capabilities of the users or sensors. This can be applied to predict the count of occurrences of an event in a time period. The experiment for this research uses lacrosse data, collected in partnership with SPAITR - a UNH undergraduate startup developing motion tracking devices for lacrosse. Decision Tree and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models are trained and perform with high success rates. These models improve upon previous work in human motion event detection and can be used a reference …

Data, Knowledge Practices, And Naturecultural Worlds: Vehicle Emissions In The Anthropocene, Lindsay Poirier
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Books
This chapter details the various techno-cultural assemblages giving rise to data collected to model and measure anthropogenic worlds, arguing that data-based technologies both represent and co-produce the Anthropocene. It begins with a review of scholarship emerging at the intersection of science and technology studies and information studies that advances understanding of data infrastructure and knowledge practices, and their role within the anthropogenic assemblages that shape history. Drawing on a case study describing how vehicle emissions are measured and regulated in the US, I examine the materialities and mutability of technologies designed to produce data about air quality, along with the …

Satellite image artefacts are features that appear in an image but not in the original imaged object and can negatively impact the interpretation of satellite data. Vertical artefacts are linear features oriented in the along-track direction of an image system and can present as either banding or striping; banding are features with a consistent width, and striping are features with inconsistent widths. This study used high-resolution data from DigitalGlobeʻs (now Maxar) WorldView-3 satellite collected at Lake Okeechobee, Florida (FL), on 30 August 2017. This study investigated the impact of vertical artefacts on both at-sensor radiance and a spectral index for …
Wilderness And The Geotag: Exploring The Claim That "Geotagging Ruins Nature" In The Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Wa, Mara Gans
All Master's Theses
This research explores the claim that “geotagging ruins nature” by quantifying and qualifying patterns in geotag use and visitors’ experiences in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, in Washington, United States. Many have raised concerns that geotags increase recreational visitation to public lands, which subsequently contributes to negative resource impacts. Others, however, claim that geotagging has made the outdoors more accessible to less privileged communities and raise concerns that condemning geotags will perpetuate the exclusion of certain groups from outdoor recreation. This debate is studied within federally designated Wilderness, which is legally defined as “untrammeled by man,” a definition rooted in problematic …

Change Point Detection For Streaming Data Using Support Vector Methods, Charles Harrison
Change Point Detection For Streaming Data Using Support Vector Methods, Charles Harrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Sequential multiple change point detection concerns the identification of multiple points in time where the systematic behavior of a statistical process changes. A special case of this problem, called online anomaly detection, occurs when the goal is to detect the first change and then signal an alert to an analyst for further investigation. This dissertation concerns the use of methods based on kernel functions and support vectors to detect changes. A variety of support vector-based methods are considered, but the primary focus concerns Least Squares Support Vector Data Description (LS-SVDD). LS-SVDD constructs a hypersphere in a kernel space to bound …

Measuring cognitive function is essential for characterizing brain health and tracking cognitive decline in Alzheimer's Disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. Current tools to accurately evaluate cognitive impairment typically rely on a battery of questionnaires administered during clinical visits which is essential for the acquisition of repeated measurements in longitudinal studies. Previous studies have shown that the remote data collection of passively monitored daily interaction with personal digital devices can measure motor signs in the early stages of synucleinopathies, as well as facilitate longitudinal patient assessment in the real-world scenario with high patient compliance. This was achieved by the automatic discovery …

In stroke care, the extent of irreversible brain injury, termed infarct core, plays a key role in determining eligibility for acute treatments, such as intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular reperfusion therapies. Many of the pivotal randomized clinical trials testing those therapies used MRI Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) or CT Perfusion (CTP) to define infarct core. Unfortunately, these modalities are not available 24/7 outside of large stroke centers. As such, there is a need for accurate infarct core determination using faster and more widely available imaging modalities including Non-Contrast CT (NCCT) and CT Angiography (CTA). Prior studies have suggested that CTA provides improved …

Brain Antigens Stimulate Proliferation Of T Lymphocytes With A Pathogenic Phenotype In Multiple Sclerosis Patients, Assaf Gottlieb, Hoai Phuong T Pham, John William Lindsey
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
A method to stimulate T lymphocytes with a broad range of brain antigens would facilitate identification of the autoantigens for multiple sclerosis and enable definition of the pathogenic mechanisms important for multiple sclerosis. In a previous work, we found that the obvious approach of culturing leukocytes with homogenized brain tissue does not work because the brain homogenate suppresses antigen-specific lymphocyte proliferation. We now report a method that substantially reduces the suppressive activity. We used this non-suppressive brain homogenate to stimulate leukocytes from multiple sclerosis patients and controls. We also stimulated with common viruses for comparison. We measured proliferation, selected the …

The RE1 Silencing Transcription Factor (REST) is a major regulator of neurogenesis and brain development. Medulloblastoma (MB) is a pediatric brain cancer characterized by a blockade of neuronal specification. REST gene expression is aberrantly elevated in a subset of MBs that are driven by constitutive activation of sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling in cerebellar granular progenitor cells (CGNPs), the cells of origin of this subgroup of tumors. To understand its transcriptional deregulation in MBs, we first studied control of Rest gene expression during neuronal differentiation of normal mouse CGNPs. Higher Rest expression was observed in proliferating CGNPs compared to differentiating neurons. …
Robust Testing Of Paired Outcomes Incorporating Covariate Effects In Clustered Data With Informative Cluster Size, Sandipan Dutta
Robust Testing Of Paired Outcomes Incorporating Covariate Effects In Clustered Data With Informative Cluster Size, Sandipan Dutta
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Paired outcomes are common in correlated clustered data where the main aim is to compare the distributions of the outcomes in a pair. In such clustered paired data, informative cluster sizes can occur when the number of pairs in a cluster (i.e., a cluster size) is correlated to the paired outcomes or the paired differences. There have been some attempts to develop robust rank-based tests for comparing paired outcomes in such complex clustered data. Most of these existing rank tests developed for paired outcomes in clustered data compare the marginal distributions in a pair and ignore any covariate effect on …

The Co3O4 nanoparticle-modified indium tin oxide-coated glass slide (ITO) electrodes are successfully prepared using dicarboxylic acid as the self-assembled monolayer through a surface esterification reaction. The ITO-SAM-Co3O4 (SAM = dicarboxylic acid) are active to electrochemically catalyze oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid. The most active assembly, with Co loading at 3.31 × 10-8 mol cm-2, exhibits 374 mV onset overpotential and 497 mV overpotential to reach 1 mA cm-2 OER current in 0.1 M HClO4. The electron transfer rate constant (k) is acquired using Laviron's approach, and the results show that k is not affected by the carbon …
Correlation Does Not Imply Correlation: A Thesis On Causal Influence And Simpson’S Paradox, Emily Naitoh
Correlation Does Not Imply Correlation: A Thesis On Causal Influence And Simpson’S Paradox, Emily Naitoh
Scripps Senior Theses
In our data-driven world, it has become commonplace to attempt to find
causal relationships. One of the themes of this thesis is to show methods of
determining causation. The second theme follows a saying in mathematics,
"correlation does not imply causation". We will also discuss situations where
correlation does not even imply correlation itself. These cases are described
by Simpson’s paradox in an exploration of different areas of mathematics
and computer coding.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Analysis Of Corrosion Of Reinforcing Steel In Fly Ash Mortar By Means Of Transmission Line Modeling, Padraig Stack
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is an important non-destructive tool that allows for a deeper understanding of the electrochemical processes and mechanisms occurring in an electrochemical cell. Equivalent electrical circuits (EECs) are used to model the impedance data into electrical components, such as resistors and capacitors, on a circuit. Current potentiostat offers software packages that can analyze the frequency response, but the software only supports “simple” EEC that can be written as fixed electrical components in some combination of series and parallel. Park and Macdonald propose a transmission line model (TLM) that does not use lumped-element models, instead, the values of …

Tropical Cyclone Frequency: Turning Paleoclimate Into Projections, E. J. Wallace, S. G. Dee
Tropical Cyclone Frequency: Turning Paleoclimate Into Projections, E. J. Wallace, S. G. Dee
OES Faculty Publications
Future changes to tropical cyclone (TC) climate have the potential to dramatically impact the social and economic landscape of coastal communities. Paleoclimate modeling and paleohurricane proxy development offer exciting opportunities to understand how TC properties (like frequency) change in response to climate variability on long time scales. However, sampling biases in proxies make it difficult to ascertain whether signals in paleohurricane records are related to climate variability or just stochasticity. Short observations and simulation biases prevent TC models from capturing the full range of climate variability and TC characteristics. Integration of these two data types can help address these uncertainties. …

Interpretable Machine Learning For Self-Service High-Risk Decision Making, Charles Recaido
Interpretable Machine Learning For Self-Service High-Risk Decision Making, Charles Recaido
All Master's Theses
This research contributes to interpretable machine learning via visual knowledge discovery in General Line Coordinates (GLC). The concepts of hyperblocks as interpretable dataset units and GLC are combined to create a visual self-service machine learning model. Two variants of GLC known as Dynamic Scaffold Coordinates (DSC) are proposed. DSC1 and DSC2 can map in a lossless manner multiple dataset attributes to a single two-dimensional (X, Y) Cartesian plane using a dynamic scaffolding graph construction algorithm.
Hyperblock analysis is used to determine visually appealing dataset attribute orders and to reduce line occlusion. It is shown that hyperblocks can generalize decision tree …
A Monte Carlo Simulation Of Rat Choice Behavior With Interdependent Outcomes, Michelle A. Frankot
A Monte Carlo Simulation Of Rat Choice Behavior With Interdependent Outcomes, Michelle A. Frankot
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Preclinical behavioral neuroscience often uses choice paradigms to capture psychiatric symptoms. In particular, the subfield of operant research produces nested datasets with many discrete choices in a session. The standard analytic practice is to aggregate choice into a continuous variable and analyze using ANOVA or linear regression. However, choice data often have multiple interdependent outcomes of interest, violating an assumption of general linear models. The aim of the current study was to quantify the accuracy of linear mixed-effects regression (LMER) for analyzing data from a 4-choice operant task called the Rodent Gambling Task (RGT), which measures decision-making in the context …

A Workflow For Unconventional Reservoirs Optimization Using Supervised Machine Learning In Conjunction With Orthorhombic Elasticity Modeling, Aymen Ab Ali Alhemdi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Due to the anisotropy and heterogeneous nature of unconventional reservoirs like shale, a comprehensive parametric study to optimize hydraulic fracture treatment for such reservoirs is a tough challenge, especially when natural fractures are present. Most of the current frac simulators do not consider the anisotropy of rock elasticity in the shales. Besides, using the fracture simulation linked with reservoir simulation for the parametric study to understand the impact of multiple different design parameters on fracture propagation and production is time expensive and low efficient. The study proposes a workflow including a new orthorhombic (OB) rock algorithm to interpret geomechanical properties …
