Parallel Approach Of Adaptive Image Thresholding Algorithm On Gpu, Adhi Prahara, Andri Pranolo, Nuril Anwar, Yingchi Mao

Knowledge Engineering and Data Science

Image thresholding is used to segment an image into background and foreground using a given threshold. The threshold can be generated using a specific algorithm instead of a pre-defined value obtained from observation or experiment. However, the algorithm involves per pixel operation, histogram calculation, and iterative procedure to search the optimum threshold that is costly for high-resolution images. In this research, parallel implementations on GPU for three adaptive image thresholding methods, namely Otsu, ISODATA, and minimum cross-entropy, were proposed to optimize their computational times to deal with high-resolution images. The approach involves parallel reduction and parallel prefix sum (scan) techniques …

Robust Bipoly-Matching For Multi-Granular Entities, Ween Jiann Lee, Maksim Tkachenko, Hady W. Lauw Dec 2021

Robust Bipoly-Matching For Multi-Granular Entities, Ween Jiann Lee, Maksim Tkachenko, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Entity matching across two data sources is a prevalent need in many domains, including e-commerce. Of interest is the scenario where entities have varying granularity, e.g., a coarse product category may match multiple finer categories. Previous work in one-to-many matching generally presumes the `one' necessarily comes from a designated source and the `many' from the other source. In contrast, we propose a novel formulation that allows concurrent one-to-many bidirectional matching in any direction. Beyond flexibility, we also seek matching that is more robust to noisy similarity values arising from diverse entity descriptions, by introducing receptivity and reclusivity notions. In addition …

Data-Driven Operational And Safety Analysis Of Emerging Shared Electric Scooter Systems, Qingyu Ma

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The rapid rise of shared electric scooter (E-Scooter) systems offers many urban areas a new micro-mobility solution. The portable and flexible characteristics have made E-Scooters a competitive mode for short-distance trips. Compared to other modes such as bikes, E-Scooters allow riders to freely ride on different facilities such as streets, sidewalks, and bike lanes. However, sharing lanes with vehicles and other users tends to cause safety issues for riding E-Scooters. Conventional methods are often not applicable for analyzing such safety issues because well-archived historical crash records are not commonly available for emerging E-Scooters.

Perceiving the growth of such a micro-mobility …

BACKGROUND: Numerous publications describe the clinical manifestations of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC or "long COVID"), but they are difficult to integrate because of heterogeneous methods and the lack of a standard for denoting the many phenotypic manifestations. Patient-led studies are of particular importance for understanding the natural history of COVID-19, but integration is hampered because they often use different terms to describe the same symptom or condition. This significant disparity in patient versus clinical characterization motivated the proposed ontological approach to specifying manifestations, which will improve capture and integration of future long COVID studies.

METHODS: The Human Phenotype Ontology …

Data-Driven Damage Initiation Criteria For Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Alexander Richard Post Nov 2021

Data-Driven Damage Initiation Criteria For Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Alexander Richard Post

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

Computational progressive failure analysis (PFA) is vital for the design, verification, and validation of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. However, the computational cost of PFA is usually high due to the complexity of the model. The damage initiation criterion is one of the essential components of a PFA code to determine the transition of a material’s state from pristine or microscopically damaged to macroscopically damaged. In this thesis, data-driven models are developed to determine the matrix damage initiation based on the Mohr-Coulomb model and Hashin model. For 2D plane stress states, the computational cost for determining damage initiation can …
