Attribution Of Responsibility After Failures Within Platform Ecosystems, Brian Dunn, Matthew L. Jensen, Ryan Ralston Aug 2021

Attribution Of Responsibility After Failures Within Platform Ecosystems, Brian Dunn, Matthew L. Jensen, Ryan Ralston

Data Analytics & Information Systems Faculty Publications

Increasingly, new hardware and software are embedded within ecosystems that include a platform and modules. Ideally these ecosystems perform reliably. However, if an ambiguously sourced failure occurs within one of these ecosystems, users are left to distribute blame across the various components of the ecosystem. The actual distribution of this blame, however, can be difficult to predict. This study investigates attribution of blame and discontinuance recommendations for ecosystem components after an ambiguously sourced failure. To extend platform ecosystems and attribution theory, we conducted a scenario-based experiment investigating the negative consequences of failure for platform and module components and the contingent …

Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo Aug 2021

Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo

Dissertations

Due to the difficulty and expense of collecting bathymetric data, modeling is the primary tool to produce detailed maps of the ocean floor. Current modeling practices typically utilize only one interpolator; the industry standard is splines-in-tension.

In this dissertation we introduce a new nominal-informed ensemble interpolator designed to improve modeling accuracy in regions of sparse data. The method is guided by a priori domain knowledge provided by artificially intelligent classifiers. We recast such geomorphological classifications, such as ‘seamount’ or ‘ridge’, as nominal data which we utilize as foundational shapes in an expanded ordinary least squares regression-based algorithm. To our knowledge …

Applying Deep Learning To The Ice Cream Vendor Problem: An Extension Of The Newsvendor Problem, Gaffar Solihu Aug 2021

Applying Deep Learning To The Ice Cream Vendor Problem: An Extension Of The Newsvendor Problem, Gaffar Solihu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Newsvendor problem is a classical supply chain problem used to develop strategies for inventory optimization. The goal of the newsvendor problem is to predict the optimal order quantity of a product to meet an uncertain demand in the future, given that the demand distribution itself is known. The Ice Cream Vendor Problem extends the classical newsvendor problem to an uncertain demand with unknown distribution, albeit a distribution that is known to depend on exogenous features. The goal is thus to estimate the order quantity that minimizes the total cost when demand does not follow any known statistical distribution. The …

Data Science And The Ice-Cream Vendor Problem, Makafui Azasoo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Newsvendor problems in Operations Research predict the optimal inventory levels necessary to meet uncertain demands. This thesis examines an extended version of a single period multi-product newsvendor problem known as the ice cream vendor problem. In the ice cream vendor problem, there are two products – ice cream and hot chocolate – which may be substituted for one another if the outside temperature is no too hot or not too cold. In particular, the ice cream vendor problem is a data-driven extension of the conventional newsvendor problem which does not require the assumption of a specific demand distribution, thus allowing …

Multi-Modal Self-Supervised Representation Learning For Earth Observation, Pallavi Jain, Bianca Schoen Phelan, Robert J. Ross Jul 2021

Multi-Modal Self-Supervised Representation Learning For Earth Observation, Pallavi Jain, Bianca Schoen Phelan, Robert J. Ross

Conference papers

Self-Supervised learning (SSL) has reduced the performance gap between supervised and unsupervised learning, due to its ability to learn invariant representations. This is a boon to the domains like Earth Observation (EO), where labelled data availability is scarce but unlabelled data is freely available. While Transfer Learning from generic RGB pre-trained models is still common-place in EO, we argue that, it is essential to have good EO domain specific pre-trained model in order to use with downstream tasks with limited labelled data. Hence, we explored the applicability of SSL with multi-modal satellite imagery for downstream tasks. For this we utilised …

A Deep Learning Approach For Forecasting Global Commodities Prices, Ahmed Saied Elberawi, Mohamed Belal Prof. Jul 2021

A Deep Learning Approach For Forecasting Global Commodities Prices, Ahmed Saied Elberawi, Mohamed Belal Prof.

Future Computing and Informatics Journal

Forecasting future values of time-series data is a critical task in many disciplines including financial planning and decision-making. Researchers and practitioners in statistics apply traditional statistical methods (such as ARMA, ARIMA, ES, and GARCH) for a long time with varying accuracies. Deep learning provides more sophisticated and non-linear approximation that supersede traditional statistical methods in most cases. Deep learning methods require minimal features engineering compared to other methods; it adopts an end-to-end learning methodology. In addition, it can handle a huge amount of data and variables. Financial time series forecasting poses a challenge due to its high volatility and non-stationarity …

Performance Of Openbci Eeg Binary Intent Classification With Laryngeal Imagery, Nathan George, Samuel Kuhn

Regis University Faculty Publications (comprehensive list)

One of the greatest goals of neuroscience in recent decades has been to rehabilitate individuals who no longer have a functional relationship between their mind and their body. Although neuroscience has produced technologies which allow the brains of paralyzed patients to accomplish tasks such as spell words or control a motorized wheelchair, these technologies utilize parts of the brain which may not be optimal for simultaneous use. For example, if you needed to look at flashing lights to spell words for communication, it would be difficult to simultaneously look at where you are moving. To improve upon this issue, this …

On The Use Of Minimum Penalties In Statistical Learning, Ben Sherwood, Bradley S. Price Jul 2021

On The Use Of Minimum Penalties In Statistical Learning, Ben Sherwood, Bradley S. Price

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Modern multivariate machine learning and statistical methodologies estimate parameters of interest while leveraging prior knowledge of the association between outcome variables. The methods that do allow for estimation of relationships do so typically through an error covariance matrix in multivariate regression which does not scale to other types of models. In this article we proposed the MinPEN framework to simultaneously estimate regression coefficients associated with the multivariate regression model and the relationships between outcome variables using mild assumptions. The MinPen framework utilizes a novel penalty based on the minimum function to exploit detected relationships between responses. An iterative algorithm that …

Awegnn: Auto-Parametrized Weighted Element-Specific Graph Neural Networks For Molecules., Timothy Szocinski, Duc Duy Nguyen, Guo-Wei Wei

Mathematics Faculty Publications

While automated feature extraction has had tremendous success in many deep learning algorithms for image analysis and natural language processing, it does not work well for data involving complex internal structures, such as molecules. Data representations via advanced mathematics, including algebraic topology, differential geometry, and graph theory, have demonstrated superiority in a variety of biomolecular applications, however, their performance is often dependent on manual parametrization. This work introduces the auto-parametrized weighted element-specific graph neural network, dubbed AweGNN, to overcome the obstacle of this tedious parametrization process while also being a suitable technique for automated feature extraction on these internally complex …

Existing studies have analyzed the relationship of missing link smells with code smell and developer contribution. However, the productivity of developers involved in missing link smell has not been explored yet. This study investigates how productivity differs between smelly and non-smelly developers. For this purpose, the productivity of smelly and non-smelly developers of seven open-source projects are analyzed. The result shows that the developers not involved in missing link smell have more productivity than the developers involved in smells. The observed difference is …

Indonesian Sentence Boundary Detection Using Deep Learning Approaches, Joan Santoso, Esther Irawati Setiawan, Christian Nathaniel Purwanto, Fachrul Kurniawan Jul 2021

Indonesian Sentence Boundary Detection Using Deep Learning Approaches, Joan Santoso, Esther Irawati Setiawan, Christian Nathaniel Purwanto, Fachrul Kurniawan

Knowledge Engineering and Data Science

Detecting the sentence boundary is one of the crucial pre-processing steps in natural language processing. It can define the boundary of a sentence since the border between a sentence, and another sentence might be ambiguous. Because there are multiple separators and dynamic sentence patterns, using a full stop at the end of a sentence is sometimes inappropriate. This research uses a deep learning approach to split each sentence from an Indonesian news document. Hence, there is no need to define any handcrafted features or rules. In Part of Speech Tagging and Named Entity Recognition, we use sequence labeling to determine …
