Several studies have shown that children with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM) and hydrocephalus have attention problems on parent ratings and difficulties in stimulus orienting associated with a posterior brain attention system. Less is known about response control and inhibition associated with an anterior brain attention system. Using the Gordon Vigilance Task (Gordon, 1983), we studied error rate, reaction time, and performance over time for sustained attention, a key anterior attention function, in 101 children with SBM, 17 with aqueductal stenosis (AS; another condition involving congenital hydrocephalus), and 40 typically developing controls (NC). In SBM, we investigated the relation between cognitive …

BACKGROUND: General anesthesia in adult humans is associated with narrowing or complete closure of the pharyngeal airway. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of progressive mandibular advancement on pharyngeal airway size in normal adults during intravenous infusion of propofol for anesthesia.
METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging was performed in nine normal adults during wakefulness and during propofol anesthesia. A commercially available intraoral appliance was used to manually advance the mandible. Images were obtained during wakefulness without the appliance and during anesthesia with the participants wearing the appliance under three conditions: without mandibular advancement, advancement to 50% maximum …

In this report we test the hypothesis that long-term virus-induced alterations in CYP occur from changes initiated by the virus that may not be related to the immune response. Enzyme activity, protein expression and mRNA of CYP3A2, a correlate of human CYP3A4, and CYP2C11, responsive to inflammatory mediators, were assessed 0.25, 1, 4, and 14 days after administration of several different recombinant adenoviruses at a dose of 5.7 x 1012 virus particles (vp)/kg to male Sprague Dawley rats. Wild type adenovirus, containing all viral genes, suppressed CYP3A2 and 2C11 activity by 37% and 39%, respectively within six hours. Levels fell …
Symbolic Methodology For Numeric Data Mining, Boris Kovalerchuk, Engenii Vityaev
Symbolic Methodology For Numeric Data Mining, Boris Kovalerchuk, Engenii Vityaev
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Currently statistical and artificial neural network methods dominate in data mining applications. Alternative relational (symbolic) data mining methods have shown their effectiveness in robotics, drug design, and other areas. Neural networks and decision tree methods have serious limitations in capturing relations that may have a variety of forms. Learning systems based on symbolic first-order logic (FOL) representations capture relations naturally. The learned regularities are understandable directly in domain terms that help to build a domain theory. This paper describes relational data mining methodology and develops it further for numeric data such as financial and spatial data. This includes (1) comparing …
Relational Methodology For Data Mining And Knowledge Discovery, Engenii Vityaev, Boris Kovalerchuk
Relational Methodology For Data Mining And Knowledge Discovery, Engenii Vityaev, Boris Kovalerchuk
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Knowledge discovery and data mining methods have been successful in many domains. However, their abilities to build or discover a domain theory remain unclear. This is largely due to the fact that many fundamental KDD&DM methodological questions are still unexplored such as (1) the nature of the information contained in input data relative to the domain theory, and (2) the nature of the knowledge that these methods discover. The goal of this paper is to clarify methodological questions of KDD&DM methods. This is done by using the concept of Relational Data Mining (RDM), representative measurement theory, an ontology of a …

We investigated verb generation in children with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM; n = 55) and in typically developing controls (n = 32). Participants completed 6 blocks (40 trials each) of a task requiring them to produce a semantically related verb in response to a target noun and an additional 40 trials on which they were simply required to read target nouns aloud. After controlling for reading response time, groups did not differ significantly in verb generation response time or learning. Children with SBM produced more non-verb errors than controls and tended to repeat their mistakes over blocks. Verb generation performance …

Spasmodic dysphonia is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary spasms in the laryngeal muscles during speech production. Although the clinical symptoms are well characterized, the pathophysiology of this voice disorder is unknown. We describe here, for the first time to our knowledge, disorder-specific brain abnormalities in these patients as determined by a combined approach of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and postmortem histopathology. We used DTI to identify brain changes and to target those brain regions for neuropathological examination. DTI showed right-sided decrease of fractional anisotropy in the genu of the internal capsule and bilateral increase of overall water diffusivity in …
Ldne: A Program For Estimating Effective Population Size From Data On Linkage Disequilibrium, Robin Waples, Chi Do
Ldne: A Program For Estimating Effective Population Size From Data On Linkage Disequilibrium, Robin Waples, Chi Do
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
LDNE is a program with a Visual Basic interface that implements a recently developed bias correction for estimates of effective population size (Ne) based on linkage disequilibrium data. The program reads genotypic data in standard formats and can accommodate an arbitrary number of samples, individuals, loci, and alleles, as well as two mating systems: random and lifetime monogamy. LDNE calculates separate estimates using different criteria for excluding rare alleles, which facilitates evaluation of data for highly polymorphic markers such as microsatellites. The program also introduces a jackknife method for obtaining confidence intervals that appears to perform better …
Searching For The Majority: Algorithms Of Voluntary Control, Jin Fan, Kevin G. Guise, Xun Liu, Hongbin Wang
Searching For The Majority: Algorithms Of Voluntary Control, Jin Fan, Kevin G. Guise, Xun Liu, Hongbin Wang

Voluntary control of information processing is crucial to allocate resources and prioritize the processes that are most important under a given situation; the algorithms underlying such control, however, are often not clear. We investigated possible algorithms of control for the performance of the majority function, in which participants searched for and identified one of two alternative categories (left or right pointing arrows) as composing the majority in each stimulus set. We manipulated the amount (set size of 1, 3, and 5) and content (ratio of left and right pointing arrows within a set) of the inputs to test competing hypotheses …

BACKGROUND: Physician advice is an important motivator for attempting to stop smoking. However, physicians' lack of intervention with smokers has only modestly improved in the last decade. Although the literature includes extensive research in the area of the smoking intervention practices of clinicians, few studies have focused on Hispanic physicians. The purpose of this study was to explore the correlates of tobacco cessation counseling practices among Hispanic physicians in the US. METHODS: Data were collected through a validated survey instrument among a cross-sectional sample of self-reported Hispanic physicians practicing in New Mexico, and who were members of the New Mexico …

On The Impact Of Winter Conditions On The Dynamics Of An Isolated Population, Lev V. Nedorezov, E. V. Volkova, Alexandr M. Sadykov

This chapter is devoted to the analysis of single-species population dynamics models with overlapping and non-overlapping generations. Within the framework of all models it is assumed that there are no activities of individuals during the wintertime (as, for example, is the case for forest insect populations in the boreal zone), and changes in population size at these moments are described with a broken trajectory (“jump down”). Also, it is assumed that the fecundity of individuals is constant and that the quota of individuals surviving winter depends on the within-year population dynamics. The dynamics of the models, which are determined by …
