Predicting Music Origin With Deep Learning, Fruzsina Ladanyi Aug 2025

Predicting Music Origin With Deep Learning, Fruzsina Ladanyi

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This project explores the usage of a late fusion deep learning architecture to predict the geographic origin of music. Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) and the language of the music sample are used as features. MFCCs were extracted from audio files to capture sound features. The language was identified using OpenAI’s Whisper model to provide additional context. A late fusion neural network architecture combining Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) layers for sequential MFCC input and dense layers for non-sequential language features were employed to support both classification and regression tasks. The classification model achieved an accuracy of 33.03% across 56 countries or …

Ml Playground: Data Modification/Preprocessing And Model Simulation Tool, Marco D. Cerrato May 2025

Ml Playground: Data Modification/Preprocessing And Model Simulation Tool, Marco D. Cerrato

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

There is a heavy reliance on programming when it comes to learning machine learning (ML). This often creates barriers for students and newcomers unfamiliar with coding. While the lessons you learn in the classroom provide essential foundational understanding, some technical or practical aspects of ML—such as data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model tuning—are best learned through hands-on interaction. ML Playground was developed to act as a proof-of-concept application to address this gap by offering a browser-based, graphical user interface that lets users engage with core ML workflows without writing code. Designed with educational accessibility in mind, the application allows users …

Explainable Ai (Xai) For A Machine Learning Heart Disease Prediction Model, Sai Abhishek Sanchula May 2025

Explainable Ai (Xai) For A Machine Learning Heart Disease Prediction Model, Sai Abhishek Sanchula

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, necessitating the development of accurate and interpretable machine learning (ML) models for early diagnosis and risk assessment (World Health Organization, 2021). While ML algorithms such as logistic regression, decision trees, support vector machines (SVM) (Cortes & Vapnik, 1995), and deep learning models (LeCun et al., 2015) have demonstrated high predictive accuracy, their adoption in clinical practice is hindered by their black-box nature (Rudin, 2019). Explainable AI (XAI) techniques, including SHapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) (Lundberg & Lee, 2017), Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations (LIME) (Ribeiro et al., 2016), and feature importance analysis …

On Bed Posture Recognition Using Deep Learning With Pressure Sensors, Farheen Akhter Ms May 2025

On Bed Posture Recognition Using Deep Learning With Pressure Sensors, Farheen Akhter Ms

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In healthcare applications such as disease prevention, sleep quality evaluation, and patient monitoring, bed posture recognition is essential. Using pressure sensor arrays placed on top of or embedded in mattresses, this study investigates the application of deep learning models for non-invasive posture classification. Although they have been widely employed, traditional machine learning approaches like support vector machines (SVM) and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) sometimes struggle with feature extraction and real-time performance necessitating considerable processing resources. I implemented a model using conventional approaches to get over these restrictions, then fine-tuned it using the following deep learning architectures for bed posture recognition: ResNet-50, …

Review Classification Using Natural Language Processing And Deep Learning, Brian Nazareth

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Sentiment Analysis is an ongoing research in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). In this project, I will evaluate my testing against an Amazon Reviews Dataset, which contains more than 100 thousand reviews from customers. This project classifies the reviews using three methods – using a sentiment score by comparing the words of the reviews based on every positive and negative word that appears in the text with the Opinion Lexicon dataset, by considering the text’s variating sentiment polarity scores with a Python library called TextBlob, and with the help of neural network training. I have created a neural …

Genetic Programming To Optimize Performance Of Machine Learning Algorithms On Unbalanced Data Set, Asitha Thumpati Aug 2023

Genetic Programming To Optimize Performance Of Machine Learning Algorithms On Unbalanced Data Set, Asitha Thumpati

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Data collected from the real world is often imbalanced, meaning that the distribution of data across known classes is biased or skewed. When using machine learning classification models on such imbalanced data, predictive performance tends to be lower because these models are designed with the assumption of balanced classes or a relatively equal number of instances for each class. To address this issue, we employ data preprocessing techniques such as SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique) for oversampling data and random undersampling for undersampling data on unbalanced datasets. Once the dataset is balanced, genetic programming is utilized for feature selection to …

Distance Correlation Based Feature Selection In Random Forest, Jose Munoz-Lopez May 2023

Distance Correlation Based Feature Selection In Random Forest, Jose Munoz-Lopez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The Pearson correlation coefficient is a commonly used measure of correlation, but it has limitations as it only measures the linear relationship between two numerical variables. In 2007, Szekely et al. introduced the distance correlation, which measures all types of dependencies between random vectors X and Y in arbitrary dimensions, not just the linear ones. In this thesis, we propose a filter method that utilizes distance correlation as a criterion for feature selection in Random Forest regression. We conduct extensive simulation studies to evaluate its performance compared to existing methods under various data settings, in terms of the prediction mean …

A Study Of Various Data Sizes Using Machine Learning, Sochaeta Koeum May 2023

A Study Of Various Data Sizes Using Machine Learning, Sochaeta Koeum

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Social media is a great domain for news consumption; however, it is referred to as a double-edged sword. While it is user-friendly and low-cost, social media is the reason why fake news can spread rapidly, which is detrimental to society, businesses, and many consumers. Therefore, fake news detection is an emerging field. However, some challenges have restricted other researchers from developing a universal machine learning model that is fast, efficient, and reliable to stop the proliferation because of the lack of resources available, such as large-sized datasets. The goal of this culminating experience project is to explore how varying datasets …

College Of Education Filemaker Extraction And End-User Database Development, Andrew Tran

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The College of Education (CoE) at the California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) developed a system to keep track of both state and national accreditation requirements using FileMaker 5, a database system. This accreditation data is crucial for reporting and record-keeping for the CSU Chancellor’s Office as well as the State of California. However, the database system was developed several decades ago, and software support has long since been dropped, causing the CoE’s legacy accreditation data to be at risk of being lost should the software or hardware suffer permanent failure. The purpose of this project was to perform extraction …

Analysis On Suicidal Ideation Among Adolescents (12-17 Years) In The Usa, Himani Raturi

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Suicide is one of the leading health concerns in United States among adolescents and the presence of suicidal ideation (SI) is quite high, with ~20-30% of adolescents reporting it at some point. Though we have seen growth and development in the prevention of suicide, there is limited research on the ability to identify the adolescents which might be at risk for SI. The objective behind the project is to identify adolescents with SI using machine learning.

The project shows statistics from different articles on adolescents in the U.S. For this study, adolescent data was taken from NSDUH 2018. Moreover, detailed …
