Soarnet, Deep Learning Thermal Detection For Free Flight, Jake T. Tallman Jun 2021

Soarnet, Deep Learning Thermal Detection For Free Flight, Jake T. Tallman

Master's Theses

Thermals are regions of rising hot air formed on the ground through the warming of the surface by the sun. Thermals are commonly used by birds and glider pilots to extend flight duration, increase cross-country distance, and conserve energy. This kind of powerless flight using natural sources of lift is called soaring. Once a thermal is encountered, the pilot flies in circles to keep within the thermal, so gaining altitude before flying off to the next thermal and towards the destination. A single thermal can net a pilot thousands of feet of elevation gain, however estimating thermal locations is not …

Federated Learning In Gaze Recognition (Fligr), Arun Gopal Govindaswamy May 2021

Federated Learning In Gaze Recognition (Fligr), Arun Gopal Govindaswamy

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

The efficiency and generalizability of a deep learning model is based on the amount and diversity of training data. Although huge amounts of data are being collected, these data are not stored in centralized servers for further data processing. It is often infeasible to collect and share data in centralized servers due to various medical data regulations. This need for diversely distributed data and infeasible storage solutions calls for Federated Learning (FL). FL is a clever way of utilizing privately stored data in model building without the need for data sharing. The idea is to train several different models locally …

Explainable Recommendation With Comparative Constraints On Product Aspects, Trung-Hoang Le, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To aid users in choice-making, explainable recommendation models seek to provide not only accurate recommendations but also accompanying explanations that help to make sense of those recommendations. Most of the previous approaches rely on evaluative explanations, assessing the quality of an individual item along some aspects of interest to the user. In this work, we are interested in comparative explanations, the less studied problem of assessing a recommended item in comparison to another reference item.

In particular, we propose to anchor reference items on the previously adopted items in a user's history. Not only do we aim at providing comparative …

Bilateral Variational Autoencoder For Collaborative Filtering, Quoc Tuan Truong, Aghiles Salah, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Preference data is a form of dyadic data, with measurements associated with pairs of elements arising from two discrete sets of objects. These are users and items, as well as their interactions, e.g., ratings. We are interested in learning representations for both sets of objects, i.e., users and items, to predict unknown pairwise interactions. Motivated by the recent successes of deep latent variable models, we propose Bilateral Variational Autoencoder (BiVAE), which arises from a combination of a generative model of dyadic data with two inference models, user- and item-based, parameterized by neural networks. Interestingly, our model can take the form …

A New Feature Selection Method Based On Class Association Rule, Sami A. Al-Dhaheri Feb 2021

A New Feature Selection Method Based On Class Association Rule, Sami A. Al-Dhaheri

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Feature selection is a key process for supervised learning algorithms. It involves discarding irrelevant attributes from the training dataset from which the models are derived. One of the vital feature selection approaches is Filtering, which often uses mathematical models to compute the relevance for each feature in the training dataset and then sorts the features into descending order based on their computed scores. However, most Filtering methods face several challenges including, but not limited to, merely considering feature-class correlation when defining a feature’s relevance; additionally, not recommending which subset of features to retain. Leaving this decision to the end-user may …

It is often the case with new technologies that it is very hard to predict their long-term impacts and as a result, although new technology may be beneficial in the short term, it can still cause problems in the longer term. This is what happened with oil by-products in different areas: the use of plastic as a disposable material did not take into account the hundreds of years necessary for its decomposition and its related long-term environmental damage. Data is said to be the new oil. The message to be conveyed is associated with its intrinsic value. But as in …

Efficient And Fair Data Valuation For Horizontal Federated Learning, Shuyue Wei, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Tianshu Song Nov 2020

Efficient And Fair Data Valuation For Horizontal Federated Learning, Shuyue Wei, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Tianshu Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Availability of big data is crucial for modern machine learning applications and services. Federated learning is an emerging paradigm to unite different data owners for machine learning on massive data sets without worrying about data privacy. Yet data owners may still be reluctant to contribute unless their data sets are fairly valuated and paid. In this work, we adapt Shapley value, a widely used data valuation metric to valuating data providers in federated learning. Prior data valuation schemes for machine learning incur high computation cost because they require training of extra models on all data set combinations. For efficient data …

Meta-Rcnn: Meta Learning For Few-Shot Object Detection, Xiongwei Wu, Doyen Sahoo, Steven Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite significant advances in deep learning based object detection in recent years, training effective detectors in a small data regime remains an open challenge. This is very important since labelling training data for object detection is often very expensive and time-consuming. In this paper, we investigate the problem of few-shot object detection, where a detector has access to only limited amounts of annotated data. Based on the meta-learning principle, we propose a new meta-learning framework for object detection named "Meta-RCNN", which learns the ability to perform few-shot detection via meta-learning. Specifically, Meta-RCNN learns an object detector in an episodic learning …
