Data Mining For Structural Damage Identification Using Hybrid Artificial Neural Network Based Algorithm For Beam And Slab Girder, Gordan Meisam
Data Mining For Structural Damage Identification Using Hybrid Artificial Neural Network Based Algorithm For Beam And Slab Girder, Gordan Meisam
Student Works (2020-2029)
One of the approaches for structural health monitoring (SHM) consists of two major components, i.e. a network of sensors to collect the response data and an extraction method to obtain information on the structural health condition. Data mining (DM) is a novel data extraction technology which can employ for development of inverse analysis. Implementation of DM techniques in different areas of civil engineering has recently given very good results. However, application of DM in SHM is not used as much as expected, thus, many challenges are still ahead. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the applicability of DM in SHM. …

Learning Transferrable Parameters For Long-Tailed Sequential User Behavior Modeling, Jianwen Yin, Chenghao Liu, Weiqing Wang, Jianling Sun, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sequential user behavior modeling plays a crucial role in online user-oriented services, such as product purchasing, news feed consumption, and online advertising. The performance of sequential modeling heavily depends on the scale and quality of historical behaviors. However, the number of user behaviors inherently follows a long-tailed distribution, which has been seldom explored. In this work, we argue that focusing on tail users could bring more benefits and address the long tails issue by learning transferrable parameters from both optimization and feature perspectives. Specifically, we propose a gradient alignment optimizer and adopt an adversarial training scheme to facilitate knowledge transfer …

The amount of data in our society has been exploding in the era of big data. This article aims to address several open challenges in big data stream classification. Many existing studies in data mining literature follow the batch learning setting, which suffers from low efficiency and poor scalability. To tackle these challenges, we investigate a unified online learning framework for the big data stream classification task. Different from the existing online data stream classification techniques, we propose a unified Sparse Online Classification (SOC) framework. Based on SOC, we derive a second-order online learning algorithm and a cost-sensitive sparse online …

Do you trudge through gathering statistics at fiscal or calendar year-end? Do you wonder why you track certain things, thinking many seem outdated or irrelevant? Many places seem to keep counting certain statistics because "that's what they've always done." For e-resources, how do you integrate those with physical counts and reconcile the variations (updated e-resources versus re-cataloged physical items)? What about repository downloads and other web traffic? The quantity of stats that libraries track is staggering and keeps growing. This program will encourage attendees to stop and evaluate what and why they're gathering data and help identify possible alternatives to …

Background: Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases. Despite increased investment in treatment, little progress has been made in the early recognition and treatment of asthma exacerbations over the last decade. Nocturnal cough monitoring may provide an opportunity to identify patients at risk for imminent exacerbations. Recently developed approaches enable smartphone-based cough monitoring. These approaches, however, have not undergone longitudinal overnight testing nor have they been specifically evaluated in the context of asthma. Also, the problem of distinguishing partner coughs from patient coughs when two or more people are sleeping in the same room using contact-free audio …

Novel Technique To Analyze The Effects Of Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Predictors On Students Course Withdrawal In College, Mohammed Ali
Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
A novel technique was applied to a college student database to identify the cognitive and non-cognitive factors that predict college students’ course withdrawal behaviors. Predictors such as high school grade point average (HSGPA), standardized test scores (ACT–American College Test or SAT-Scholastic Aptitude Test), number of credit hours enrolled, and age were analyzed in this study. Data mining software algorithms were used to study information about undergraduate students at a west-south-central state university in the United States. The study results revealed that two factors, number of enrolled credit hours, and a student’s age have the most effect on collegiate course withdrawal …

Spatial optimization represents a set of powerful spatial analysis techniques that can be used to identify optimal solution(s) and even generate a large number of competitive alternatives. The formulation of such problems involves maximizing or minimizing one or more objectives while satisfying a number of constraints. Solution techniques range from exact models solved with such approaches as linear programming and integer programming, or heuristic algorithms, i.e. Tabu Search, Simulated Annealing, and Genetic Algorithms. Spatial optimization techniques have been utilized in numerous planning applications, such as location-allocation modeling/site selection, land use planning, school districting, regionalization, routing, and urban design. These methods …

Efficient Vehicle Routing Optimization For Autistic Users, Mohammed Shabalah Abdulrahman Hasan
Student Works (2020-2029)
In recent years, daily life without a vehicle would be impossible. As an inevitable result, the number of vehicles on the road increases day by day in various large cities around the world. The increased number of vehicles is a big concern because it causes a lot of traffic congestions, especially during peak hours. Besides, there has been a rapid rise of on-demand Ride-Hailing Services (RHSs), such as Grab, Uber, EzCab, and MyCar, etc. This allows passengers with smartphones to place trip requests and assign them to drivers according to requester’s location and drivers' availability. In consequence, efficient routing algorithms …

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and the second-leading cause of cancer death in men. Brachytherapy is a highly effective treatment option for prostate cancer, and is the most cost-effective initial treatment among all other therapeutic options for low to intermediate risk patients of prostate cancer. In low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy, verifying the location of the radioactive seeds within the prostate and in relation to critical normal structures after seed implantation is essential to ensuring positive treatment outcomes.
One current gap in knowledge is how to simultaneously image the prostate, surrounding anatomy, and radioactive seeds within the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cornac is an open-source Python framework for multimodal recommender systems. In addition to core utilities for accessing, building, evaluating, and comparing recommender models, Cornac is distinctive in putting emphasis on recommendation models that leverage auxiliary information in the form of a social network, item textual descriptions, product images, etc. Such multimodal auxiliary data supplement user-item interactions (e.g., ratings, clicks), which tend to be sparse in practice. To facilitate broad adoption and community contribution, Cornac is publicly available at https://github.com/PreferredAI/cornac, and it can be installed via Anaconda or the Python Package Index (pip). Not only is it well-covered by unit tests …
Philosophical Perspectives, Jochen Albrecht
Philosophical Perspectives, Jochen Albrecht

This entry follows in the footsteps of Anselin’s famous 1989 NCGIA working paper entitled “What is special about spatial?” (a report that is very timely again in an age when non-spatial data scientists are ignorant of the special characteristics of spatial data), where he outlines three unrelated but fundamental characteristics of spatial data. In a similar vein, I am going to discuss some philosophical perspectives that are internally unrelated to each other and could warrant individual entries in this Body of Knowledge. The first one is the notions of space and time and how they have evolved in …

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In mobile crowdsensing, some users jointly finish a sensing task through the sensors equipped in their intelligent terminals. In particular, the photo crowdsensing based on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) collects pictures for some specific targets or events and uploads them to nearby edge servers, which leads to richer data content and more efficient data storage compared with the common mobile crowdsensing; hence, it has attracted an important amount of attention recently. However, the mobile users prefer uploading the photos through Wifi APs (PoIs) rather than cellular networks. Therefore, photos stored in mobile phones are exchanged among users, in order to …
Feature Extraction And Analysis Of Binaries For Classification, Micah Flack
Feature Extraction And Analysis Of Binaries For Classification, Micah Flack
Annual Research Symposium
The research project, Feature Extraction and, Analysis of Binaries for Classification, provides an in-depth examination of the features shared by unlabeled binary samples, for classification into the categories of benign or malicious software using several different methods. Because of the time it takes to manually analyze or reverse engineer binaries to determine their function, the ability to gather features and then instantly classify samples without explicitly programming the solution is incredibly valuable. It is possible to use an online service; however, this is not always viable depending on the sensitivity of the binary. With Python3 and the Pefile library, we …

Digital Forensic Readiness: An Examination Of Law Enforcement Agencies In The State Of Maryland, James B. Mcnicholas Iii
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Digital forensic readiness within the law enforcement community, especially at the local level, has gone mostly unexplored. As a result, a current lack of data exists that examines the digital forensic readiness of individual agencies, the possibility of proximity relationships, and correlations between readiness and backlogs. This quantitative, crosssectional research study sought to explore these issues by focusing on the state of Maryland. The study resulted in the creation of a digital forensic readiness scoring model that was then used to assign digital forensic readiness scores to thirty (30) of the one-hundred-forty-one (141) law enforcement agencies throughout Maryland. It was …

There has been significant growth in social media networks in the last few years. Posting opinions and messages on social networking websites has become a popular activity on the Internet. The data sources are necessary for business intelligence and market analytics, as human opinions form a major indicator of human desires and behaviour. This has resulted in the development of a new study field called sentiment analysis. This includes the analysis, evaluation and interpretation of the opinions with the help of text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) processes, for identifying the text polarity, as positive, neutral or negative. It …
On The Robustness Of Cascade Diffusion Under Node Attacks, Alvis Logins, Yuchen Li, Panagiotis Karras
On The Robustness Of Cascade Diffusion Under Node Attacks, Alvis Logins, Yuchen Li, Panagiotis Karras
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
How can we assess a network's ability to maintain its functionality under attacks? Network robustness has been studied extensively in the case of deterministic networks. However, applications such as online information diffusion and the behavior of networked public raise a question of robustness in probabilistic networks. We propose three novel robustness measures for networks hosting a diffusion under the Independent Cascade (IC) model, susceptible to node attacks. The outcome of such a process depends on the selection of its initiators, or seeds, by the seeder, as well as on two factors outside the seeder's discretion: the attack strategy and the …
Neural Network Pruning For Ecg Arrhythmia Classification, Isaac E. Labarge
Neural Network Pruning For Ecg Arrhythmia Classification, Isaac E. Labarge
Master's Theses
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are a widely accepted means of solving complex classification and detection problems in imaging and speech. However, problem complexity often leads to considerable increases in computation and parameter storage costs. Many successful attempts have been made in effectively reducing these overheads by pruning and compressing large CNNs with only a slight decline in model accuracy. In this study, two pruning methods are implemented and compared on the CIFAR-10 database and an ECG arrhythmia classification task. Each pruning method employs a pruning phase interleaved with a finetuning phase. It is shown that when performing the scale-factor pruning …

The use of water filtration Point-of-Use (POU) systems are extensive, ranging from water dispensers in public estates, to household POU water systems. Manufacturers typically recommend filtration cartridges to be changed (i) after their useful life, or (ii) when the water flow volume have exceeded certain capacity, whichever is earlier. However, filtration mechanisms are typically not changed with sufficient regularity. Overused filters can result in negative health effects, over and above the deterioration and loss of filtration benefits of the POU water system. Presently most existing water purification systems do not have smart connected Internet of Things (IoT) means of informing …

Predictive Task Assignment In Spatial Crowdsourcing: A Data-Driven Approach, Yan Zhao, Kai Zheng, Yue Cui, Han Su, Feida Zhu, Xiaofang Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid development of mobile networks and the widespread usage of mobile devices, spatial crowdsourcing, which refers to assigning location-based tasks to moving workers, has drawn increasing attention. One of the major issues in spatial crowdsourcing is task assignment, which allocates tasks to appropriate workers. However, existing works generally assume the static offline scenarios, where the spatio-temporal information of all the workers and tasks is determined and known a priori. Ignorance of the dynamic spatio-temporal distributions of workers and tasks can often lead to poor assignment results. In this work we study a novel spatial crowdsourcing problem, namely Predictive …

Due to the complexity and heterogeneity inherent to the hydrologic cycle, the modeling of physical water processes has historically and inevitably been characterized by a broad spectrum of disciplines including data management, visualization, and statistical analyses. This is further complicated by the sub-disciplines within the water science community, where specific aspects of water processes are modeled independently with simplification and model boundary integration receiving little attention. This can hinder current and future research efforts to understand, explore, and advance water science. We developed the Virtual Watershed Platform to improve understanding of hydrologic processes and more generally streamline model-data integration and …

Background: Diffusion of innovations theory posits that ideas and behaviors can be spread through social network ties. In intervention work, intervening upon certain network members may lead to intervention effects “diffusing” into the network to affect the behavior of network members who did not receive the intervention. The strategic players (SP) method, an extension of Borgatti’s Key Players approach, is used to balance the (sometimes) opposing goals of spreading the intervention to as many members of the target group as possible, while preventing the spread of the intervention to others. Objectives: We sought to test whether members of the SP …
