Handling Relationships In A Wiki System, Yashi Kamboj Dec 2016

Handling Relationships In A Wiki System, Yashi Kamboj

Master's Projects

Wiki software enables users to manage content on the web, and create or edit web pages freely. Most wiki systems support the creation of hyperlinks on pages and have a simple text syntax for page formatting. A common, more advanced feature is to allow pages to be grouped together as categories. Currently, wiki systems support categorization of pages in a very traditional way by specifying whether a wiki page belongs to a category or not. Categorization represents unary relationship and is not sufficient to represent n-ary relationships, those involving links between multiple wiki pages.

In this project, we extend Yioop, …

Web-Based Integrated Development Environment, Hien T. Vu Dec 2016

Web-Based Integrated Development Environment, Hien T. Vu

Master's Projects

As tablets become more powerful and more economical, students are attracted to them and are moving away from desktops and laptops. Their compact size and easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) reduce the learning and adoption barriers for new users. This also changes the environment in which undergraduate Computer Science students learn how to program. Popular Integrated Development Environments (IDE) such as Eclipse and NetBeans require disk space for local installations as well as an external compiler. These requirements cannot be met by current tablets and thus drive the need for a web-based IDE. There are also many other …

Hashtag Recommendation With Topical Attention-Based Lstm, Yang Li, Ting Liu, Jing Jiang, Liang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Microblogging services allow users to create hashtags to categorize their posts. In recent years, the task of recommending hashtags for microblogs has been given increasing attention. However, most of existing methods depend on hand-crafted features. Motivated by the successful use oflong short-term memory (LSTM) for many natural language processing tasks, in this paper, weadopt LSTM to learn the representation of a microblog post. Observing that hashtags indicatethe primary topics of microblog posts, we propose a novel attention-based LSTM model whichincorporates topic modeling into the LSTM architecture through an attention mechanism. Weevaluate our model using a large real-world dataset. Experimental results show that …

Cast2face: Assigning Character Names Onto Faces In Movie With Actor-Character Correspondence, Guangyu Gao, Mengdi Xu, Jialie Shen, Huangdong Ma, Shuicheng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatically identifying characters in movies has attracted researchers' interest and led to several significant and interesting applications. However, due to the vast variation in character appearance as well as the weakness and ambiguity of available annotation, it is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we investigate this problem with the supervision of actor-character name correspondence provided by the movie cast. Our proposed framework, namely, Cast2Face, is featured by: 1) we restrict the assigned names within the set of character names in the cast; 2) for each character, by using the corresponding actor and movie name as keywords, we retrieve …

Automatic Assessment Of Environmental Hazards For Fall Prevention Using Smart-Cameras, Jeffrey Kutchka

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As technology advances in the field of Computer Vision, new applications will emerge. One device that has emerged is the smart-camera, a camera attached to an embedded system that can perform routines a regular camera could not, such as object or event detection. In this thesis we describe a smart-camera system we designed, implemented, and evaluated for fall prevention monitoring of at-risk people while in bed, whether it be for a hospital patient, nursing home resident, or at home elderly resident. The camera will give a nurse or caregiver environmental awareness of the at-risk person and notify them when that …

Museum 4.0 As The Future Of Steam In Museums, Mark Walhimer Nov 2016

Museum 4.0 As The Future Of Steam In Museums, Mark Walhimer

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

Informal STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities (programs) and exhibits are common in science centers, children’s museums and natural history museums. As museums change to Museum 4.0 models (1), the STEAM exhibits and programs in museums also change. Museums 4.0 is the transformation of museums from a monolithic fixed location institution to a nimble community driven event driven organization. The Museum 4.0 becomes personalized to the visitor without fixed outcomes and without the physical restrictions of a single fixed location. As museums evolve to a Museum 4.0 model with visitor lead activities, STEAM activities within museums also change …

Reducing Adaptation Latency For Multi-Concept Visual Perception In Outdoor Environments, Maggie Wigness, John G. Rogers, Luis Ernesto Navarro-Serment, Arne Suppe, Bruce A. Draper Nov 2016

Reducing Adaptation Latency For Multi-Concept Visual Perception In Outdoor Environments, Maggie Wigness, John G. Rogers, Luis Ernesto Navarro-Serment, Arne Suppe, Bruce A. Draper

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-concept visual classification is emerging as a common environment perception technique, with applications in autonomous mobile robot navigation. Supervised visual classifiers are typically trained with large sets of images, hand annotated by humans with region boundary outlines followed by label assignment. This annotation is time consuming, and unfortunately, a change in environment requires new or additional labeling to adapt visual perception. The time is takes for a human to label new data is what we call adaptation latency. High adaptation latency is not simply undesirable but may be infeasible for scenarios with limited labeling time and resources. In this paper, …

Hierarchical Visualization Of Video Search Results For Topic-Based Browsing, Yu-Gang Jiang, Jiajun Wang, Qiang Wang, Wei Liu, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing video search engines return a ranked list of videos for each user query, which is not convenient for browsing the results of query topics that have multiple facets, such as the "early life," "personal life," and "presidency" of a query "Barack Obama." Organizing video search results into semantically structured hierarchies with nodes covering different topic facets can significantly improve the browsing efficiency for such queries. In this paper, we introduce a hierarchical visualization approach for video search result browsing, which can help users quickly understand the multiple facets of a query topic in a very well-organized manner. Given a …

Deep-Based Ingredient Recognition For Cooking Recipe Retrieval, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2016

Deep-Based Ingredient Recognition For Cooking Recipe Retrieval, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Retrieving recipes corresponding to given dish pictures facilitates the estimation of nutrition facts, which is crucial to various health relevant applications. The current approaches mostly focus on recognition of food category based on global dish appearance without explicit analysis of ingredient composition. Such approaches are incapable for retrieval of recipes with unknown food categories, a problem referred to as zero-shot retrieval. On the other hand, content-based retrieval without knowledge of food categories is also difficult to attain satisfactory performance due to large visual variations in food appearance and ingredient composition. As the number of ingredients is far less than food …

Give-Me: Gamification In Virtual Environments For Multimodal Evaluation - A Framework, Wai L. Khoo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the last few decades, a variety of assistive technologies (AT) have been developed to improve the quality of life of visually impaired people. These include providing an independent means of travel and thus better access to education and places of work. There is, however, no metric for comparing and benchmarking these technologies, especially multimodal systems. In this dissertation, we propose GIVE-ME: Gamification In Virtual Environments for Multimodal Evaluation, a framework which allows for developers and consumers to assess their technologies in a functional and objective manner. This framework is based on three foundations: multimodality, gamification, and virtual reality. It …

Landmark Detection With Surprise Saliency Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Feng Tang, Damian Lyons, Daniel Leeds Sep 2016

Landmark Detection With Surprise Saliency Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Feng Tang, Damian Lyons, Daniel Leeds

Faculty Publications

Abstract—Landmarks can be used as reference to enable people or robots to localize themselves or to navigate in their environment. Automatic definition and extraction of appropriate landmarks from the environment has proven to be a challenging task when pre-defined landmarks are not present. We propose a novel computational model of automatic landmark detection from a single image without any pre-defined landmark database. The hypothesis is that if an object looks abnormal due to its atypical scene context (what we call surprise saliency), it then may be considered as a good landmark because it is unique and easy to spot by …

Fast Covariant Vlad For Image Search, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hanzi Wang Sep 2016

Fast Covariant Vlad For Image Search, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hanzi Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vector of locally aggregated descriptor (VLAD) is a popular image encoding approach for its simplicity and better scalability over conventional bag-of-visual-word approach. In order to enhance its distinctiveness and geometric invariance, covariant VLAD (CVLAD) is proposed to pool local features based on their dominant orientations/characteristic scales, which leads to a geometric-aware representation. This representation achieves rotation/scale invariance when being associated with circular matching. However, the circular matching induces several times of computation overhead, which makes CVLAD hardly suitable for large-scale retrieval tasks. In this paper, the issue of computation overhead is alleviated by performing the circular matching in CVLAD's frequency …

Passive Visual Analytics Of Social Media Data For Detection Of Unusual Events, Kush Rustagi, Junghoon Chae Aug 2016

Passive Visual Analytics Of Social Media Data For Detection Of Unusual Events, Kush Rustagi, Junghoon Chae

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Now that social media sites have gained substantial traction, huge amounts of un-analyzed valuable data are being generated. Posts containing images and text have spatiotemporal data attached as well, having immense value for increasing situational awareness of local events, providing insights for investigations and understanding the extent of incidents, their severity, and consequences, as well as their time-evolving nature. However, the large volume of unstructured social media data hinders exploration and examination. To analyze such social media data, the S.M.A.R.T system provides the analyst with an interactive visual spatiotemporal analysis and spatial decision support environment that assists in evacuation planning …

Gdd(Growth Degree Day) Module For Vinsense Visual Analytics System, Pradeep K. Lam, David Ebert , Phd, Jiawei Zhang

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Limited resources and increasing costs require vineyards to develop optimized methods of planting, growing, and harvesting crops in order to ensure max yield and stay competitive in the marketplace. Data from sensors planted within the soil paired with weather reports and observation data from farmers could help develop competitive farming strategies. While automatic computation models are usually a black box that cannot explain how the input data are transformed into output, the farmers require an approach that allows them to interactively manipulate and supervise the computation process. The VinSense project was developed for this purpose. In this paper, we focus …

Leveraging Static Analysis Tools For Improving Usability Of Memory Error Sanitization Compilers, Rigel Gjomemo, Phu Huu Phung, Edmund Ballou, Kedar S. Namjoshi, V. N. Venkatakrishnan, Lenore Zuck

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Memory errors such as buffer overruns are notorious security vulnerabilities. There has been considerable interest in having a compiler to ensure the safety of compiled code either through static verification or through instrumented runtime checks. While certifying compilation has shown much promise, it has not been practical, leaving code instrumentation as the next best strategy for compilation. We term such compilers Memory Error Sanitization Compilers (MESCs). MESCs are available as part of GCC, LLVM and MSVC suites. Due to practical limitations, MESCs typically apply instrumentation indiscriminately to every memory access, and are consequently prohibitively expensive and practical to only small …

Cross-Modal Self-Taught Hashing For Large-Scale Image Retrieval, Liang Xie, Lei Zhu, Peng Pan, Yansheng Lu Jul 2016

Cross-Modal Self-Taught Hashing For Large-Scale Image Retrieval, Liang Xie, Lei Zhu, Peng Pan, Yansheng Lu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cross-modal hashing integrates the advantages of traditional cross-modal retrieval and hashing, it can solve large-scale cross-modal retrieval effectively and efficiently. However, existing cross-modal hashing methods rely on either labeled training data, or lack semantic analysis. In this paper, we propose Cross-Modal Self-Taught Hashing (CMSTH) for large-scale cross-modal and unimodal image retrieval. CMSTH can effectively capture the semantic correlation from unlabeled training data. Its learning process contains three steps: first we propose Hierarchical Multi-Modal Topic Learning (HMMTL) to detect multi-modal topics with semantic information. Then we use Robust Matrix Factorization (RMF) to transfer the multi-modal topics to hash codes which are …

Outlier-Robust Tensor Pca, Pan Zhou, Jiashi Feng Jul 2016

Outlier-Robust Tensor Pca, Pan Zhou, Jiashi Feng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Low-rank tensor analysis is important for various real applications in computer vision. However, existing methods focus on recovering a low-rank tensor contaminated by Gaussian or gross sparse noise and hence cannot effectively handle outliers that are common in practical tensor data. To solve this issue, we propose an outlier-robust tensor principle component analysis (OR-TPCA) method for simultaneous low-rank tensor recovery and outlier detection. For intrinsically low-rank tensor observations with arbitrary outlier corruption, OR-TPCA is the first method that has provable performance guarantee for exactly recovering the tensor subspace and detecting outliers under mild conditions. Since tensor data are naturally high-dimensional …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents perspectives from both academia and practice on how an HCI testing is to be conducted and the deliberations that go into the testing. HCI testing can be conducted in closed-door laboratory or in a field setting. While there is an increased interest in field testing of an HCI artifact, there is always an enduring concern over how to administer a field testing given that the testers will have less control over the course of testing. In this paper, we cover HCI testing deliberation as well as the operational issues of field testing, and conclude the paper with …
