Probabilistic Road Map Sampling Strategies For Multi-Robot Motion Planning, Christopher M. Clark Dec 2005

Probabilistic Road Map Sampling Strategies For Multi-Robot Motion Planning, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents a Probabilistic Road Map (PRM) motion planning algorithm to be queried within Dynamic Robot Networks—a multi-robot coordination platform for robots operating with limited sensing and inter-robot communication. First, the Dynamic Robot Networks (DRN) coordination platform is introduced that facilitates centralized robot coordination across ad hoc networks, allowing safe navigation in dynamic, unknown environments. As robots move about their environment, they dynamically form communication networks. Within these networks, robots can share local sensing information and coordinate the actions of all robots in the network. Second, a fast single-query Probabilistic Road Map (PRM) to be called within the DRN …

The Influence Of Quantization Process On The Performance Of Global Entropic Thresholding Algorithms Using Electrical Capacitance Tomography Data, A. J. Mwambela Dec 2005

The Influence Of Quantization Process On The Performance Of Global Entropic Thresholding Algorithms Using Electrical Capacitance Tomography Data, A. J. Mwambela

Tanzania Journal of Science

In measuring component fraction in multiphase flows using tomographic techniques, it is desirable to use a high speed tomography system capable of generating 100 tomograms per second. The electrical capacitance tomography system in this regard is considered to be the best among the available tomographic techniques. However, due to its inherent limitations the system generates distorted reconstructed tomograms necessitating the use of extra signal processing techniques such as thresholding to minimize these distortions. Whilst thresholding technique has been effective in minimizing distortions, the additional computation associated with the process limits the speed of tomogram generation desired from the system. Further, …

Intelligent Resource Discovery Using Ontology-Based Resource Profiles, J. Steven Hughes, Dan Crichton, Sean Kelly, Chris A. Mattmann, Jerry Crichton, Thuy Tran Dec 2005

Intelligent Resource Discovery Using Ontology-Based Resource Profiles, J. Steven Hughes, Dan Crichton, Sean Kelly, Chris A. Mattmann, Jerry Crichton, Thuy Tran

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Successful resource discovery across heterogeneous repositories is highly dependent on the semantic and syntactic homogeneity of the associated resource descriptions in each repository. Ideally, consistent resource descriptions are easily extracted from each repository, expressed using standard syntactic and semantic structures, and managed and accessed within a distributed, flexible, and scalable software framework. In practice however, seldom do all three of these elements exist. To help address this situation, the Object Oriented Data Technology (OODT) project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has developed an extensible, standards-based resource description scheme that provides the necessary description and management facilities for the discovery of …

Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall Dec 2005

Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall

Theses and Dissertations

Many environments in which an agent can use reinforcement learning techniques to learn profitable strategies are affected by other learning agents. These situations can be modeled as general-sum games. When playing repeated general-sum games with other learning agents, the goal of a self-interested learning agent is to maximize its own payoffs over time. Traditional reinforcement learning algorithms learn myopic strategies in these games. As a result, they learn strategies that produce undesirable results in many games. In this dissertation, we develop and analyze algorithms that learn non-myopic strategies when playing many important infinitely repeated general-sum games. We show that, in …

Monitoring Pc Hardware Sounds In Linux Systems Using The Daubechies D4 Wavelet., Robert Karns Henry Dec 2005

Monitoring Pc Hardware Sounds In Linux Systems Using The Daubechies D4 Wavelet., Robert Karns Henry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Users of high availability (HA) computing require systems that run continuously, with little or no downtime. Modern PCs address HA needs by monitoring operating system parameters such as voltage, temperature, and hard drive status in order to anticipate possible system failure. However, one modality for PC monitoring that has been underutilized is sound. The application described here uses wavelet theory to analyze sounds produced by PC hard drives during standard operation. When twenty-nine hard drives were tested with the application and the results compared with the drives' Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) data, the binomial distribution's low p-value of …

Using Prospect Theory To Investigate Decision-Making Bias Within An Information Security Context, Neil J. Schroeder Dec 2005

Using Prospect Theory To Investigate Decision-Making Bias Within An Information Security Context, Neil J. Schroeder

Theses and Dissertations

Information security is an issue that has increased in importance over the past decade. In this time both practitioner and academic circles have researched and developed practices and process to more effectively handle information security. Even with growth in these areas there has been little research conducted into how decision makers actually behave. This is problematic because decision makers in the Department of Defense have been observed exhibiting risk seeking behavior when making information security decisions that seemingly violate accepted norms. There are presently no models in the literature that provide sufficient insight into this phenomenon. This study used Prospect …

New Graph Model For Channel Assignment In Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, S. C. Huang, X. Huang, Weili Wu Dec 2005

New Graph Model For Channel Assignment In Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, S. C. Huang, X. Huang, Weili Wu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The channel assignment problem in ad hoc wireless networks is investigated. The problem is to assign channels to hosts in such a way that interference among hosts is eliminated and the total number of channels is minimised. Interference is caused by direct collisions from hosts that can hear each other or indirect collisions from hosts that cannot hear each other, but simultaneously transmit to the same destination. A new class of disk graphs (FDD: interFerence Double Disk graphs) is proposed that include both kinds of interference edges. Channel assignment in wireless networks is a vertex colouring problem in FDD graphs. …

Loss Aware Rate Allocations In H.263 Coded Video Transmissions, Xiao Su, Benjamin Wah Dec 2005

Loss Aware Rate Allocations In H.263 Coded Video Transmissions, Xiao Su, Benjamin Wah

Faculty Publications

For packet video, information loss and bandwidth limitation are two factors that affect video playback quality. Traditional rate allocation approaches have focused on optimizing video quality under bandwidth constraint alone. However, in the best-effort Internet, packets carrying video data are susceptible to losses, which need to be reconstructed at the receiver side. In this paper, we propose loss aware rate allocations in both group-of-block (GOB) level and macroblock level, given that certain packets are lost during transmissions and reconstructed using simple interpolation methods at the receiver side. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithms can produce videos of higher quality …

This paper describes the theoretical framework and implementation of a database management system for storing and manipulating diverse probability distributions of discrete random variables with finite domains, and associated information. A formal Semistructured Probabilistic Object (SPO) data model and a Semistructured Probabilistic Query Algebra (SP-algebra) are proposed. The SP-algebra supports standard database queries as well as some specific to probabilities, such as conditionalization and marginalization. Thus, the Semistructured Probabilistic Database may be used as a backend to any application that involves the management of large quantities of probabilistic information, such as building stochastic models. The implementation uses XML encoding of …

A Scalable Correlation Aware Aggregation Strategy For Wireless Sensor Networks, Yujie Zhu, Ramanuja Vedantham, Seung Jong Park, Raghupathy Sivakumar

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sensors-to-sink data in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are typically correlated with each other. Exploiting such correlation when performing data aggregation can result in considerable improvements in the bandwidth and energy performance of WSNs. In order to exploit such correlation, we present a scalable and distributed correlation-aware aggregation structure that addresses the practical challenges in the context of aggregation in WSNs. Through simulations and analysis, we evaluate the performance of the proposed approach with centralized and distributed correlation aware and unaware structures.

A New Fault Information Model For Fault-Tolerant Adaptive And Minimal Routing In 3-D Meshes, Zhen Jiang, Jie Wu, Dajin Wang Dec 2005

A New Fault Information Model For Fault-Tolerant Adaptive And Minimal Routing In 3-D Meshes, Zhen Jiang, Jie Wu, Dajin Wang

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper we rewrite Wang's Minimal-Connected-Component (MCC) model [7] in 2-D meshes without using global information so that not only the existence of a minimal path can be ensured at the source, but also such a path can be formed by routing decisions at intermediate nodes along the path. We extend this MCC model and the corresponding routing in 2-D meshes to 3-D meshes. It is based on our early work on fault tolerant adaptive and minimal routing [9] and the boundary information model [8] in 3-D meshes. We study fault tolerant adaptive and minimal routing from the source …

Infosearch: A System For Searching And Retrieving Documents Using Complex Queries, Nikhil Deshpande Dec 2005

Infosearch: A System For Searching And Retrieving Documents Using Complex Queries, Nikhil Deshpande

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The colossal amount of information available online has resulted in overloading users who need to navigate this information for their routine requirements. Although search engines have been effective in reducing this information overload, they support only queries involving keywords and Boolean operators. There are certain application domains where more expressive ways of searching are necessary. Consider searching a full-text patent database for documents containing more than n occurrences of a pattern, or for documents that have a particular pattern followed by another pattern within a specified interval. Such complex patterns involving pattern frequency and sequence, as well as patterns involving …

Customization Of A Generic Search Engine By Adding User Categories, Ajay Mohandas Madkaiker Dec 2005

Customization Of A Generic Search Engine By Adding User Categories, Ajay Mohandas Madkaiker

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The current search engines available on the Net are generic in nature. They do not consider user preferences and treat all users information needs in the same way. As a result they frequently return a large number of links, that do not meet the user's information need. This requires more searching to find what the user is looking for. For example if a user is interested in a particular game, e.g. cricket, and enters the query world cup, a generic search engine would return links of all the sports that hold a world cup. The user has to browse through …

Estream: An Integration Of Event And Stream Processing, Vihang Garg

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Event and stream data processing models have been researched extensively and are utilized in diverse application domains. Advanced applications require both event and stream processing, which is currently not supported. Although there are number of similarities and differences between them, a synergistic integration of their strengths will be better than the sum of their parts. In this thesis, we present EStream, an integrated event and stream processing system for monitoring changes on stream computations and for expressing and processing complex events on continuous queries (CQs). We introduce attribute-based constraints for reducing uninteresting events that are generated from CQs. We discuss …

Testing Java Monitors By State Space Exploration, Monica Maria Hernandez Dec 2005

Testing Java Monitors By State Space Exploration, Monica Maria Hernandez

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Java monitors are classes that are intended to be accessed by multiple threads at the same time. Detecting synchronization faults in Java Monitors is considerably more challenging than testing regular classes, due to the inherent non-determinism of concurrent programs. This thesis proposes a state based exploration approach to testing Java monitors. This approach consists of exploring the state space of a Java monitor in a depth-first manner, dynamically building test sequences, which are comprised by the states explored along each path. Moreover, threads are introduced on the fly during the exploration of each path, based on several rules for simulating …
