Laser-Induced Photon-Branched Chain Reaction In A Chemically-Active Gas-Dispersed Medium, Thomas F. George, Renat R. Letfullin, Galen C. Duree

Thomas George

A promising avenue in the development of high-energy pulsed chemical HF/DF lasers and amplifiers is the utilization of a photon-branched chain reaction initiated in a two-phase active medium, that is, a medium containing a laser working gas and ultradispersed passivated metal particles. These particles are evaporated under the action of IR laser radiation which results in the appearance of free atoms, their diffusion into the gas, and the development of a photon-branching chain process, which involves photons as both reactants and products. The key obstacle here is the formation of a relatively large volume (in excess of 10^3 cm^3) of the …

Adhesion And Interfacial Fracture Toughness Between Hard And Soft Materials, Nima Rahbar, Kurt Wolf, Argjenta Orana, Roy Fennimore, Zong Zong, Juan Meng, George Papandreou, Cynthia Maryanoff, Wole Soboyejo

Nima Rahbar

This paper presents the results of a combined experimental and theoretical study of adhesion between hard and soft layers that are relevant to medical devices such as drug-eluting stents and semiconductor applications. Brazil disk specimens were used to measure the interfacial fracture energies between model parylene C and 316L stainless steel over a wide range of mode mixities. The trends in the overall fracture energies are predicted using a combination of adhesion theories and fracture mechanics concepts. The measured interfacial fracture energies are shown to be in good agreement with the predictions.

Potential Driven Deposition Of Poly(Diallyldimethylammonium Chloride) Onto The Surface Of 3-Mercaptopropionic Acid Monolayers Assembled On Gold, Wesley Sanders, Mark Anderson Nov 2008

Potential Driven Deposition Of Poly(Diallyldimethylammonium Chloride) Onto The Surface Of 3-Mercaptopropionic Acid Monolayers Assembled On Gold, Wesley Sanders, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements are used to examine the ability of applied potential to drive the ionic self-assembly of poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA) onto a substrate modified with a monolayer of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA). The potential of zero charge (PZC) of the gold electrode modified with a monolayer of 3-MPA was found by differential capacitance measurements to be −0.12 (±0.01) V versus Ag−AgCl. Changing the substrate potential to values positive (−0.01 V vs Ag−AgCl) of the PZC induces interfacial conditions that are favorable for the electrostatic deposition of cationic polymers onto the surface of 3-MPA …

Imidazole (Im) and Pyrrole (Py)-containing polyamides that can form stacked dimers can be programmed to target specific sequences in the minor groove of DNA and control gene expression. Even though various designs of polyamides have been thoroughly investigated for DNA sequence recognition, the use of H-pin polyamides (covalently cross-linked polyamides) has not received as much attention. Therefore, experiments were designed to systematically investigate the DNA recognition properties of two symmetrical H-pin polyamides composed of PyImPyIm (5) or f-ImPyIm (3e, f=formamido) tethered with an ethylene glycol linker. These compounds were created to recognize the cognate 5′-ACGCGT-3′ through an overlapped and staggered …

Impedance Of Contact-Printed Alkanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold, Leslie Adamczyk, Mark Anderson Oct 2008

Impedance Of Contact-Printed Alkanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold, Leslie Adamczyk, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Contact printing (CP) is a common method for creating modified interfaces having two-dimensional patterns. The popularity of this method is due to the ease and low cost of this method. When printing an interfacial pattern with n-alkanethiols, the desired properties are those of a homogeneous, solution deposited monolayer. Patterning a surface, however, may cause defects to occur within the monolayer where two thiol domains meet. If large enough, the activity of these areas can dominate the electrochemical response. Creating patterned monolayer modified interfaces, therefore, may generate vast user defined domain boundaries that impact the electrochemical behavior of the modified interface …

Potential Driven Polyelectrolyte Adsorption Onto Monolayer Modified Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Weslie Sanders Oct 2008

Potential Driven Polyelectrolyte Adsorption Onto Monolayer Modified Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Weslie Sanders

Mark R. Anderson

Preparation of interfacial structures by molecular self-assembly has been actively studied for many years. Well-defined modified interfaces can be used to study fundamental interfacial properties, or they can be used in different practical applications. To broaden the utility of interfaces prepared by molecular self-assembly, monolayers containing terminal functionality are frequently used. These interfaces have structural and physical properties that can be controlled by both the identity of the functionalization as well as the ensemble structure of the modified interface. This suggests that the chemical and physical properties of an interface can be designed and/or controlled to some extent by altering …

Homogeneous Dbd In N2: 1) Lif, Talif And Electrical Measurements, N. Gherardi, Et. Es-Sebbar, C. Sarra-Bourret, N. Naudé, F. Massines

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar

In this paper we compare two different discharges that can be obtained in a DBD configuration, that is to say the filamentary discharge (usual regime in atmospheric DBD) with the Atmospheric Pressure Townsend Discharge (APTD), which is a homogeneous regime obtained in nitrogen atmosphere. The aim is to help in the understanding of the processes which control the transition from one regime to the other. To do so, the discharge is characterized through electrical measurements, coupled with optical diagnostics among which Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) for radical density measurements. The influence of the addition of small quantities of additives on …

Synthesis Of Large Crystal Transition Metal Substituted Zeolite Zsm-5, Tara L. Schaeffer, Scott Kirkby Oct 2008

Synthesis Of Large Crystal Transition Metal Substituted Zeolite Zsm-5, Tara L. Schaeffer, Scott Kirkby

Scott J. Kirkby

Crystals of ZSM-5 containing Cu, Mn, and Fe have been synthesized up to 85 μm in length along the long axis.
This is 1 to 2 orders of magnitude larger than any previously reported. Phase identification was accomplished by powder XRD. A modified Charnel’s method was used to chelate the transition metal and the aluminum in the synthesis gel. Element alanalysis was performed by ICP-AES, confirming the presence of the metals. The metals are resistant to leaching under ion exchange and, as determined by partial dissolution, incorporated throughout the volume of the crystals.

Metallomesogens: Supramolecular Design Via Alkyl-Rich Metal Complexes, Juan C. Noveron Sep 2008

Metallomesogens: Supramolecular Design Via Alkyl-Rich Metal Complexes, Juan C. Noveron

Juan C N

Molecules that use non-covalent interactions to self-organize into supramolecular structures have the potential to generate functional materials with a broad range of applications. This review article focuses on the design and synthesis of molecules that use transition metal ions and long alkyl chains to direct the formation of ordered supramolecular phases. This unique combination of coordination bonds and alkyl interdigitation provide exceptional control over intermolecular interactions and can generate nanoscale molecular order as liquid crystalline states, Langmuir-Blodgett films on surfaces, highly ordered lyotropic phases such as metallo-micelles in water and reverse metallo-micelles in organic media. The synthetic strategy for alkane-rich …

The Discovery-Oriented Approach To Organic Chemistry. 7. Rearrangement Of Trans-Stilbene Oxide With Bismuth Trifluoromethanesulfonate And Other Metal Triflates, Ram S. Mohan, James E. Christensen, Matthew G. Huddle, Jamie L. Rogers, Herbie Yung Aug 2008

The Discovery-Oriented Approach To Organic Chemistry. 7. Rearrangement Of Trans-Stilbene Oxide With Bismuth Trifluoromethanesulfonate And Other Metal Triflates, Ram S. Mohan, James E. Christensen, Matthew G. Huddle, Jamie L. Rogers, Herbie Yung

Ram S. Mohan

A microscale discovery-oriented experiment illustrating the rearrangement of trans-stilbene oxide using non-corrosive metal triflates as catalysts has been developed. The use of CDCl3 as the reaction solvent eliminates the need for any workup and avoids the use of highly toxic boron trifluoride etherate as a catalyst and additional reaction solvent.

Characterization Of Carboxylic Acid-Terminated Self-Assembled Monolayers By Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy And Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Wesley Sanders, Ricardo Vargas, Mark Anderson Jun 2008

Characterization Of Carboxylic Acid-Terminated Self-Assembled Monolayers By Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy And Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Wesley Sanders, Ricardo Vargas, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) are used to monitor changes in the ionization of monolayers of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid. When using an anionic redox probe, Fe(CN)6−4, the charge-transfer resistance of the 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid monolayer-modified interface increases in a sigmoidal fashion as the solution is made basic. The opposite effect is observed when using a cationic redox probe. The inflection points of these two titration curves, however, differ when using the different redox probes. This result is taken as being characteristic of the influence that applied potential has on the ionization of the monolayer. The role of substrate …

Chrystal D. Bruce

Seven N-terminus modified derivatives of a previously published minor-groove binding polyamide (f-ImPyIm, 1) were synthesized and the biochemical and biophysical chemistry evaluated. These compounds were synthesized with the aim of attaining a higher level of sequence selectivity over f-ImPyIm (1), a previously published strong minor-groove binder. Two compounds possessing a furan or a benzofuran moiety at the N-terminus showed a footprint of 0.5μM at the cognate ACGCGT site (determined by DNase I footprinting); however, the specificity of these compounds was not improved. In contrast, PyImPyIm (4) produced a footprint of 0.5μM but showed a superior specificity using the same technique. …

Simultaneous Determination Of Glucose And L‐Glutamate Using A Capillary Enzyme Reactor With Electrochemical Detection, Stephanie Hooper, Mark Anderson Apr 2008

Simultaneous Determination Of Glucose And L‐Glutamate Using A Capillary Enzyme Reactor With Electrochemical Detection, Stephanie Hooper, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

An electrophoresis capillary that incorporates two enzymes for the simultaneous determination of glucose and l-glutamate is described. The enzymes deposited along the separation capillary walls react with their respective substrate as they are separated during the electrophoresis to produce hydrogen peroxide that is detected by amperometry as the hydrogen peroxide zone emerges from the end of the capillary. Even though both enzyme reactions produce a common product, hydrogen peroxide, the hydrogen peroxide produced by each enzyme reaction stays in narrow zones that migrate the length of the capillary at different rates. The rate of migration for the individual H2O2 zones …

In the title compound, [Mo(C5H4NO2)2O2], the MoVI atom exhibits a distorted octahedral coordination geometry formed by two terminal oxo ligands and two monoanionic O,O-bidentate pyridinone ligands. The two terminal oxo ligands lie in a cis arrangement, the ketonic O atoms of the pyridinone ligands are coordinated trans to the oxo ligands and the deprotonated hydroxyl O atoms are located trans to each other. The crystal structure contains intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen bonds, C-H...O contacts and face-to-face [pi]-[pi] stacking interactions with an interplanar separation of 3.25 (1) Å.

In the title compound, C22H21N3O6Se, the heterocyclic ring makes dihedral angles of 50.03 (11) and 67.75 (11)°, respectively, with the benzene and phenyl rings. The terminal C atoms of the ester groups are disordered over two positions: the site occupancies for the C atoms are 0.62 (3)/0.38 (3) and 0.48 (3)/0.52 (3). In the crystal structure, weak intra- and intermolecular C-H...O interactions are observed.

Kristin Pangallo

Halogenated 1′methyl-1,2′-bipyrroles (MBPs) have been identified worldwide in marine mammals. Here we present the tentative identification of previously undetected MBP congeners in Delpinus delphis blubber using gas chromatography/electron capture negative ion mass spectrometry (GC/ECNI-MS) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/time of flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC/TOF-MS). This is the first report of 26 congeners. The presence of numerous partially halogenated congeners suggests that they are either biosynthesized concomitantly with their perhalogenated counterparts or that their dehalogenation products can also bioaccumulate. The newly found compounds fit the geographic trend that has been previously noted. That is, samples from the Atlantic Ocean …

Second-Sphere Amino Acids Contribute To Transition-State Structure In Bovine Purine Nucleoside Phosphorylase, Lei Li, Minkui Luo, Mahmoud Ghanem, Erika A. Taylor, Vern L. Schramm

Erika A. Taylor, Ph.D.

Transition-state structures of human and bovine of purine nucleoside phosphorylases differ, despite 87% homologous amino acid sequences. Human PNP (HsPNP) has a fully dissociated transition state, while that for bovine PNP (BtPNP) has early SN1 character. Crystal structures and sequence alignment indicate that the active sites of these enzymes are the same within crystallographic analysis, but residues in the second-sphere from the active sites differ significantly. Residues in BtPNP have been mutated toward HsPNP, resulting in double (Asn123Lys; Arg210Gln) and triple mutant PNPs (Val39Thr; Asn123Lys; Arg210Gln). Steady-state kinetic studies indicated unchanged catalytic activity, while pre-steady-state studies indicate that the chemical …
