Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Composites: Superhydrophobic Polymer Coatings With Photoreactive Perfluorinated Phthalocyanines, Abdul Azeez

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

ABSTRACT

We report partly fluorinated and silicon-based polymers that incorporate inorganic/organic materials capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) using only visible light and air. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which incorporated a known perfluorinated phthalocyanine photosensitizer, F64PcZn, supported on silicon and titanium oxides was further modified via chemical surface roughening to exhibit enhanced hydrophobicity when used as a coating. Water contact angles as high as ~159° have been observed, vs. ~ 92° for the unmodified polymer. The polymer matrix, however, does not resist the ROS it produces as evidenced by spectroscopic and SEM data. A polysiloxane matrix was similarly …

Stabilized, Hybrid Solid-State Photocatalysts For Water Purification: Preparation, Properties And Performance Under Visible Light Irradiation, Karpagavalli Ramji Dec 2018

Stabilized, Hybrid Solid-State Photocatalysts For Water Purification: Preparation, Properties And Performance Under Visible Light Irradiation, Karpagavalli Ramji

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Stabilized heterogeneous photocatalysts that use only solar light and air have been prepared and successfully employed to decontaminate water from organic pollutants. Organic dye pollutants present, for example in textile effluents, are one of the major sources of water pollution owing to their limited biodegradability, toxicity and potential carcinogenic risks. Before certifying water for public consumption, reuse in industries or for discharge in surface water the organic pollutants must be degraded, an effort that is energy intensive and currently requires complex methodologies. We report solid-state photocatalysts that use only visible light and air to treat wastewater. Perfluoroalkyl perfluoro-substituted zinc phthalocyanine …

Porphyrin Cross-Linkers For Generating Soluble Molecularly Imprinted Polymers From Polyethyleneimine, Mohammed R. Elshaer May 2014

Porphyrin Cross-Linkers For Generating Soluble Molecularly Imprinted Polymers From Polyethyleneimine, Mohammed R. Elshaer

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Molecular recognition is vital to many biochemical processes and is at the heart of promising bio-medically related technologies. Molecular imprinting has a long-standing history as a successful method for mimicking the molecular recognition phenomena exhibited by nature, whereby artificial receptors are prepared for a given target molecule based on synthetic polymers. The molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) contains a three dimensional network with a memorized cavity specific to the shape and functionality of the templated target molecule. The utility of traditional MIPs has been limited due to an inherent lack of solubility. We have worked toward developing a system that allows …
