Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Lignin powder was modified via ring-opening polymerization of caprolactone to form a lignin–polycaprolactone (LPCL) particulate. The LPCL particulates were mixed with an acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) matrix at an extremely high rotational speed of up to 3000 rpm, which was achieved by a closed-loop screw mixer and in-line melt extruder. Using this high-shear extruding mixer, the LPCL particulate size was controlled in the range of 3395 nm (conventional twin-screw extrusion) down to 638 nm (high-shear mixer of 3000 rpm) by altering the mixing speed and time. The resulting LPCL/ABS composites clearly showed non-Einstein viscosity phenomena, exhibiting reduced viscosity (2130 Pa·s) compared to …

Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline And Light-Emitting Properties Of Poly(Pyridinium) Salts Containing Various Diamine Connectors And Hydrophilic Macrocounterions, Tae Soo Jo, Haesook Han, Pradip K. Bhowmik, Benoît Heinrich, Bertrand Donnio May 2019

Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline And Light-Emitting Properties Of Poly(Pyridinium) Salts Containing Various Diamine Connectors And Hydrophilic Macrocounterions, Tae Soo Jo, Haesook Han, Pradip K. Bhowmik, Benoît Heinrich, Bertrand Donnio

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

A set of poly(pyridinium) salts containing various diamine moieties, as molecular connectors, and poly(ethyleneglycol)-4-nonylphenyl-3-sulfopropyl ether, thereafter referred to as “Macroion”, as the hydrophilic counterion, were prepared by metathesis reaction from the respective precursory tosylated poly(pyridinium)s in methanol. The structure of these ionic polymers was established by spectroscopy and chromatography techniques. The shape-persistent ionic poly(pyridinium) materials, inserting rigid or semi-rigid diamine spacers, display thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties from room-temperature up to their isotropization (in the temperature range around 160–200 °C). The nature of the LC phases is lamellar in both cases as identified by the combination of various complementary experimental techniques including …

Synthesis And Electrochemical Characterization Of Pani/Ni And Pani/Au/Ni Composites, Morgan Emily Pacini Dec 2017

Synthesis And Electrochemical Characterization Of Pani/Ni And Pani/Au/Ni Composites, Morgan Emily Pacini

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this research is to show that the electrochemically controlled formation of monometallic and bimetallic catalysts in polyaniline (PANI) can directly influence the efficiency and reproducibility of the catalytic oxidation of methanol. PANI is a conductive polymer that provides a three-dimensional template for the metallic catalysts deposition at nitrogen sites. The controlled deposition of metallic species can be achieved using the normal oxidation/reduction cycles of PANI. The deposition of metallic species relies on anion precursors that are electrostatically bound by the polymer during the oxidation cycle. The precursor is reduced directly at the nitrogen sites in the polymer …

Speciation Of Pentavalent Technetium Complexes With Aniline And Thiobenzene Derivatives, Kyle E. Childs Dec 2014

Speciation Of Pentavalent Technetium Complexes With Aniline And Thiobenzene Derivatives, Kyle E. Childs

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The reaction of bidentate aniline oligomers with pentavalent technetium has been investigated previously through the reaction of (n-Bu4N)TcOCl4 with o-phenylenediamine (PDA). The initial studies found that PDA reacted in a 1 to 2 molar ratio with pentavalent technetium in in ethanol. This study was expanded by the examination of a second aniline derivatives, 2-aminophenol (AMP)) and two thiobenzene derivatives (2-mercaptophenol (MP) and thiosalicylic acid (TSA)) to evaluate the kinetic formation of these complexes with pentavalent technetium. The pentavalent technetium complexes all showed reactivity with technetium having a coordination numbers of 5 with all ligands reacting in a 1 to 2 …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Pyridinium salts, both molecular and polymeric, are an interesting class of multifunctional materials that exhibit liquid-crystalline and light-emitting properties. Moreover, their properties can be easily tuned by introducing new types of anions or by modifying their chemical structures. This dissertation describes synthesis and characterization of poly(pyridinium salt)s containing macrocounterions and fluorene moieties in their backbones, synthesis and characterization of nanocomposites of poly(pyridinium salt)s with single-walled carbon nanotubes via non-covalent interactions, and synthesis and characterizations of pyridinium salts having different aliphatic linkages and their application in organic acid sensing.

First, all of these ionic polymers were prepared by either ring-transmutation or …

The Synthesis And Systematic Evaluation Of Modified Polymeric Foams And Electrically Conductive Polyimide/Carbon/Metal Films, John Macharia Kinyanjui

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Thermally processed PU foams are examined as a function of processing temperatures (25, 45, 65, and 85°C) at the side, middle, and center of a simple cylindrical mold. The PU foams show both chemical and morphological differences as a function of the processing temperature and radial position within the mold. Thermal degradation of uretoneimine structures, the emergence of carbodiimide structures, and extent of reaction of isocyanate groups are measured using photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopy. Chemical gradients and morphology differences between the side, middle, and center of the molded foam are observed for all processing temperatures. The data indicate that thermal activation …

Polyelectrolytes are an important class of macromolecules that contain dissociable ionic groups. When introduced into polar solvent, usually the universal solvent water, dissociation takes place so that electrically charged macromolecule is suspended in solution. The electrostatic interaction is operative between ionized groups inside the macromolecule, between the macromolecules, between the counterions, and between the macromolecule and counterion. Since this interaction is characterized by its long-range nature, the solution exhibits various interesting properties including the polyelectrolyte behavior very different from solutions of neutral polymers.
