Rainich-Type Conditions For Perfect Fluid Spacetimes, Dionisios Krongos, Charles G. Torre Dec 2014

Rainich-Type Conditions For Perfect Fluid Spacetimes, Dionisios Krongos, Charles G. Torre

Research Vignettes

In this worksheet we describe and illustrate a relatively simple set of new Rainich-type conditions on an n-dimensional spacetime which are necessary and sufficient for it to define a perfect fluid solution of the Einstein field equations. Procedures are provided which implement these Rainich-type conditions and which reconstruct the perfect fluid from the metric. These results provide an example of the idea of geometrization of matter fields in general relativity, which is a purely geometrical characterization of matter fields via the Einstein field equations.

On A Nonlinear Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equation With Irregular Data, Victor D´Evou´E Dec 2014

On A Nonlinear Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equation With Irregular Data, Victor D´Evou´E

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The main purpose of this paper is to study the existence and properties of solutions of a certain nonlinear non-Lipschitz hyperbolic partial differential equation in two independent variables with irregular data. Using regularization techniques, we give a meaning to this problem by replacing it by a tow parameters family of Lipschitz regular problems. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution in an appropriate algebra of generalized functions and we precise how it depends on the choices made. We study the relationship with the classical solution.

A Semiparametric Estimation For Regression Functions In The Partially Linear Autoregressive Time Series Model, R. Farnoosh, M. Hajebi, S. J. Mortazavi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a semiparametric method is proposed for estimating regression function in the partially linear autoregressive time series model . Here, we consider a combination of parametric forms and nonlinear functions, in which the errors are independent. Semiparametric and nonparametric curve estimation provides a useful tool for exploring and understanding the structure of a nonlinear time series data set to make for a more efficient study in the partially linear autoregressive model. The unknown parameters are estimated using the conditional nonlinear least squares method, and the nonparametric adjustment is also estimated by defining and minimizing the local L2 -fitting …

Integrability And Exact Solutions For A (2+1)-Dimensional Variable-Coefficient Kdv Equation, Zhang Yu, Xu Gui-Qiong

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

By using the WTC method and symbolic computation, we apply the Painlevé test for a (2+1)-dimensional variable-coefficient Kortweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, and the considered equation is found to possess the Painlevé property without any parametric constraints. The auto-Bǎcklund transformation and several types of exact solutions are obtained by using the Painlevé truncated expansion method. Finally, the Hirota’s bilinear form is presented and multi-soliton solutions are also constructed.

The Investigation Of Surplus Of Energy And Signal Propagation At Time-Domain Waveguide Modes, Özlem Işık, Zeynep F. Koçak, Emre Eroğlu

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Classical waveguide theory has been developed bearing on Bernoulli’s product method which results in separation of space and time variables in Maxwell’s equations. The time-harmonic waveguide modes have been stated mathematically for transmitting signals along the waveguides. As a starting point, present studies on transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) waveguide modes with previous results are taken and exhibited in an advanced form. They have been obtained within the framework of an evolutionary approach to solve Maxwell’s equations with time derivative. As a result every modal field is obtained in the form of a product of vector functions of transverse coordinates …

Centered-Difference Applications For Schrödinger's Equation, Matthew Thomas Murachver Nov 2014

Centered-Difference Applications For Schrödinger's Equation, Matthew Thomas Murachver

Physics

This project enumerates methods utilizing discretized centered-difference approximations on the second order differential equation for quantum particles known as Schrodinger’s Equation. An eigenvalue-eigenfunction scheme is developed to sieve for valid solutions to The Time Independent Schrodinger Equation. Additionally the Crank-Nicolson method is applied to the Time Dependent Schrodinger Equation to describe wavefunction (eigenfunction) time evolution. The validity of these methods is discussed with applications to several fundamental pedagogical introductory quantum mechanic systems.

Dressing Method And Quadratic Bundles Related To Symmetric Spaces: Vanishing Boundary Conditions, Tihomir Valchev Sep 2014

Dressing Method And Quadratic Bundles Related To Symmetric Spaces: Vanishing Boundary Conditions, Tihomir Valchev

Articles

We consider quadratic bundles related to Hermitian symmetric spaces of the type SU(m+n)/S(U(m) x U(n)). The simplest representative of the corresponding integrable hierarchy is given by a multi-component Kaup-Newell derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation which serves as a motivational example for our general considerations. We extensively discuss how one can apply Zakharov-Shabat's dressing procedure to derive reflectionless potentials obeying zero boundary conditions. Those could be used for one to construct fast decaying solutions to any nonlinear equation belonging to the same hierarchy. One can distinguish between generic soliton type solutions and rational solutions.

On Quasilinear Parabolic Evolution Equations In Weighted Lp-Spaces Ii, Jeremy Lecrone, Mathias Wilke, Jan Prüss Sep 2014

On Quasilinear Parabolic Evolution Equations In Weighted Lp-Spaces Ii, Jeremy Lecrone, Mathias Wilke, Jan Prüss

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Our study of abstract quasi-linear parabolic problems in time-weighted L_p-spaces, begun in 2010, is extended in this paper to include singular lower order terms, while keeping low initial regularity. The results are applied to reaction-diffusion problems, including Maxwell-Stefan diffusion, and to geometric evolution equations like the surface-diffusion flow or the Willmore flow. The method presented here will be applicable to other parabolic systems, including free boundary problems.

Isotropic Oscillator Under A Magnetic And Spatially Varying Electric Field, David L. Frost Mr., Frank Hagelberg Aug 2014

Isotropic Oscillator Under A Magnetic And Spatially Varying Electric Field, David L. Frost Mr., Frank Hagelberg

Undergraduate Honors Theses

We investigate the energy levels of a particle confined in the isotropic oscillator potential with a magnetic and spatially varying electric field. Here we are able to exactly solve the Schrodinger equation, using matrix methods, for the first excited states. To this end we find that the spatial gradient of the electric field acts as a magnetic field in certain circumstances. Here we present the changes in the energy levels as functions of the electric field, and other parameters.

A Soft Condensed Matter Approach Towards Mathematical Modelling Of Mass Transport And Swelling In Food Grains, Michael Chapwanya, N. Misra Aug 2014

A Soft Condensed Matter Approach Towards Mathematical Modelling Of Mass Transport And Swelling In Food Grains, Michael Chapwanya, N. Misra

Articles

Soft condensed matter (SCM) physics has recently gained importance for a large class of engineering materials. The treatment of food materials from a soft matter perspective, however, is only at the surface and is gaining importance for understanding the complex phenomena and structure of foods. In this work, we present a theoretical treatment of navy beans from a SCM perspective to describe the hydration kinetics. We solve the transport equations within a porous matrix and employ the Flory–Huggin’s equation for polymer–solvent mixture to balance the osmotic pressure. The swelling of the legume seed is modelled as a moving boundary with …

Application Of The Extended G'/G-Expansion Method To The Improved Eckhaus Equation, Nasir Taghizadeh, Seyyedeh R. Moosavi Noori, Seyyedeh B. Moosavi Noori

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, the extended (G'/G)-expansion method is used to seek more general exact solutions of the improved Eckhaus equation and the (2+1)-dimensional improved Eckhaus equation. As a result, hyperbolic function solutions, trigonometric function solutions and rational function solutions with free parameters are obtained. When the parameters are taken as special values the solitary wave solutions are also derived from the traveling wave solutions. Moreover, it is shown that the proposed method is direct, effective and can be used for many other nonlinear evolution equations in mathematical physics.

Stability Of An Inhomogeneous Damped Vibrating String, Siddhartha Misra, Ganesh C. Gorain Jun 2014

Stability Of An Inhomogeneous Damped Vibrating String, Siddhartha Misra, Ganesh C. Gorain

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider the vibrations of an inhomogeneous damped string under a distributed disturbing force which is clamped at both ends. The well-possedness of the system is studied. We prove that the amplitude of such vibrations is bounded under some restriction of the disturbing force. Finally, we establish the uniform exponential stabilization of the system when the disturbing force is insignificant. The results are established directly by means of an exponential energy decay estimate.

Reliable Study Of Nonhomogeneous Bbm Equation With Time-Dependent Coefficients By The Modified Sine-Cosine Method, Aminah Qawasmeh, Marwan Alquran

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The modified sine-cosine method is an efficient and powerful mathematical tool in finding exact traveling wave solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations (NLPDEs) with time-dependent coefficients. In this paper, the proposed approach is applied to study a nonhomogeneous generalized form of Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation with time-dependent coefficients. Explicit traveling wave solutions of the equation are obtained under certain constraints on the coefficient functions.

Numerical Solution For The Systems Of Variable-Coefficient Coupled Burgers’ Equation By Two-Dimensional Legendre Wavelets Method, Hossein Aminikhah, Sakineh Moradian

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a numerical method for solving the systems of variable-coefficient coupled Burgers’ equation is proposed. The method is based on two-dimensional Legendre wavelets. Two-dimensional operational matrices of integration are introduced and then employed to find a solution to the systems of variable-coefficient coupled Burgers’ equation. Two examples are presented to illustrate the capability of the method. It is shown that the numerical results are in good agreement with the exact solutions for each problem.

Analysis Of A Partial Differential Equation Model Of Surface Electromigration, Selahittin Cinar May 2014

Analysis Of A Partial Differential Equation Model Of Surface Electromigration, Selahittin Cinar

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A Partial Differential Equation (PDE) based model combining surface electromigration and wetting is developed for the analysis of the morphological instability of mono-crystalline metal films in a high temperature environment typical to operational conditions of microelectronic interconnects. The atomic mobility and surface energy of such films are anisotropic, and the model accounts for these material properties. The goal of modeling is to describe and understand the time-evolution of the shape of film surface. I will present the formulation of a nonlinear parabolic PDE problem for the height function h(x,t) of the film in the horizontal …

An Applied Functional And Numerical Analysis Of A 3-D Fluid-Structure Interactive Pde, Thomas J. Clark May 2014

An Applied Functional And Numerical Analysis Of A 3-D Fluid-Structure Interactive Pde, Thomas J. Clark

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

We will present qualitative and numerical results on a partial differential equation (PDE) system which models a certain fluid-structure dynamics. In Chapter \ref{ChWellposedness}, the wellposedness of this PDE model is established by means of constructing for it a nonstandard semigroup generator representation; this representation is essentially accomplished by an appropriate elimination of the pressure. This coupled PDE model involves the Stokes system which evolves on a three dimensional domain $\mathcal{O}$ being coupled to a fourth order plate equation, possibly with rotational inertia parameter $\rho >0$, which evolves on a flat portion $\Omega$ of the boundary of $\mathcal{O}$. The coupling on …

A Radial Basis Function Partition Of Unity Method For Transport On The Sphere, Kevin Aiton May 2014

A Radial Basis Function Partition Of Unity Method For Transport On The Sphere, Kevin Aiton

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The transport phenomena dominates geophysical fluid motions on all scales making the numerical solution of the transport problem fundamentally important for the overall accuracy of any fluid solver. In this thesis, we describe a new high-order, computationally efficient method for numerically solving the transport equation on the sphere. This method combines radial basis functions (RBFs) and a partition of unity method (PUM). The method is mesh-free, allowing near optimal discretization of the surface of the sphere, and is free of any coordinate singularities. The basic idea of the method is to start with a set of nodes that are quasi-uniformly …

Well-Posedness And Stability Of A Semilinear Mindlin–Timoshenko Plate Model, Pei Pei Apr 2014

Well-Posedness And Stability Of A Semilinear Mindlin–Timoshenko Plate Model, Pei Pei

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

I will discuss well-posedness and long-time behavior of Mindlin-Timoshenko plate equations that describe vibrations of thin plates. This system of partial differential equations was derived by R. Mindlin in 1951 (though E. Reissner also considered an analogous model earlier in 1945). It can be regarded as a generalization of the Timoshenko beam model (1937) to flat plates, and is more accurate than the classical Kirchhoff-Love plate theory (1888) because it accounts for shear deformations.

I will present a semilinear version of the Mindlin-Timoshenko system. The primary feature of this model is the interplay between nonlinear frictional forces (``damping”) and nonlinear …

Euler-Poincar´E Equations For G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov Mar 2014

Euler-Poincar´E Equations For G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

The G-strand equations for a map R×R into a Lie group G are associated to a G-invariant Lagrangian. The Lie group manifold is also the configuration space for the Lagrangian. The G-strand itself is the map g(t,s):R×R→G, where t and s are the independent variables of the G-strand equations. The Euler-Poincar'e reduction of the variational principle leads to a formulation where the dependent variables of the G-strand equations take values in the corresponding Lie algebra g and its co-algebra, g∗ with respect to the pairing provided by the variational derivatives of the Lagrangian. We review examples of different G-strand …

On A Nonlocal Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, Tihomir Valchev

Conference papers

We consider a nonlocal nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation recently proposed by Ablowitz and Musslimani as a theoretical model for wave propagation in {\it PT}-symmetric coupled wave-guides and photonic crystals. This new equation is integrable by means of inverse scattering method, i. e. it possesses a Lax pair, infinite number of integrals of motion and exact solutions. We aim to describe here some of the basic properties of the nonlocal Schr\"odinger equation and its scattering operator. In doing this we shall make use of methods alternative to those applied by Ablowitz and Musslimani which seem to be better suited for treating possible …

Infinitely Many Rotationally Symmetric Solutions To A Class Of Semilinear Laplace-Beltrami Equations On The Unit Sphere, Emily M. Fischer Jan 2014

Infinitely Many Rotationally Symmetric Solutions To A Class Of Semilinear Laplace-Beltrami Equations On The Unit Sphere, Emily M. Fischer

HMC Senior Theses

I show that a class of semilinear Laplace-Beltrami equations has infinitely many solutions on the unit sphere which are symmetric with respect to rotations around some axis. This equation corresponds to a singular ordinary differential equation, which we solve using energy analysis. We obtain a Pohozaev-type identity to prove that the energy is continuously increasing with the initial condition and then use phase plane analysis to prove the existence of infinitely many solutions.

It comprises the following topics: direct and inverse scattering problem and the dressing method.

Matrix G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2014

Matrix G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

We discuss three examples in which one may extend integrable Euler–Poincare ordinary differential equations to integrable Euler–Poincare partial differential
equations in the matrix G-Strand context. After describing matrix G-Strand examples for SO(3) and SO(4) we turn our attention to SE(3) where the matrix G-Strand equations recover the exact rod theory in the convective representation. We then find a zero curvature representation of these equations and establish the conditions under which they are completely integrable. Thus, the G-Strand equations turn out to be a rich source of integrable systems. The treatment is meant to be expository and most concepts are explained …

Hamiltonian Approach To The Modeling Of Internal Geophysical Waves With Vorticity, Alan Compelli Jan 2014

Hamiltonian Approach To The Modeling Of Internal Geophysical Waves With Vorticity, Alan Compelli

Articles

We examine a simplified model of internal geophysical waves in a rotational 2-dimensional water-wave system, under the influence of Coriolis forces and with gravitationally induced waves. The system consists of a lower medium, bound underneath by an impermeable flat bed, and an upper lid. The 2 media have a free common interface. Both media have constant density and constant (non-zero) vorticity. By examining the governing equations of the system we calculate the Hamiltonian of the system in terms of its conjugate variables and perform a variable transformation to show that it has canonical Hamiltonian structure. We then linearize the system, …

Symmetry And Reductions Of Integrable Dynamical Systems: Peakon And The Toda Chain Systems, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Gaetano Vilasi Jan 2014

Symmetry And Reductions Of Integrable Dynamical Systems: Peakon And The Toda Chain Systems, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Gaetano Vilasi

Articles

We are analyzing several types of dynamical systems which are both integrable and important for physical applications. The first type are the so-called peakon systems that appear in the singular solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation describing special types of water waves. The second type are Toda chain systems, that describe molecule interactions. Their complexifications model soliton interactions in the adiabatic approximation. We analyze the algebraic aspects of the Toda chains and describe their real Hamiltonian forms.

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We investigate a class of abstract functional stochastic evolution equations driven by a fractional Brownianmotion in a real separable Hilbert space.Global existence results concerningmild solutions are formulated under various growth and compactness conditions. Continuous dependence estimates and convergence results are also established. Analysis of three stochastic partial differential equations, including a second-order stochastic evolution equation arising in the modeling of wave phenomena and a nonlinear diffusion equation, is provided to illustrate the applicability of the general theory.
