On The Peakon And Soliton Solutions Of An Integrable Pde With Cubic Nonlinearities, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons
Conference papers
The interest in the singular solutions (peakons) has been inspired by the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation and its peakons. An integrable peakon equation with cubic nonlinearities was first discovered by Qiao. Another integrable equation with cubic nonlinearities was introduced by V. Novikov . We investigate the peakon and soliton solutions of the Qiao equation.
Blow-Up Of Solutions To The Generalized Inviscid Proudman-Johnson Equation, Alejandro Sarria
Blow-Up Of Solutions To The Generalized Inviscid Proudman-Johnson Equation, Alejandro Sarria
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The generalized inviscid Proudman-Johnson equation serves as a model for n-dimensional incompressible Euler flow, gas dynamics, high-frequency waves in shallow waters, and orientation of waves in a massive director field of a nematic liquid crystal. Furthermore, the equation also serves as a tool for studying the role that the natural fluid processes of convection and stretching play in the formation of spontaneous singularities, or of their absence.
In this work, we study blow-up, and blow-up properties, in solutions to the generalized, inviscid Proudman-Johnson equation endowed with periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions. More particularly, regularity of solutions in an Lp setting will …

On The Geometrıc Interpretatıons Of The Kleın-Gordon Equatıon And Solution Of The Equation By Homotopy Perturbation Method, Hasan Bulut, H. M. Başkonuş
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper is organized in the following ways: In the first part, we obtained the Klein Gordon Equation (KGE) in the Galilean space. In the second part, we applied Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) to this differential equation. In the third part, we gave two examples for the Klein Gordon equation. Finally, We compared the numerical results of this differential equation with their exact results. We also showed that approach used is easy and highly accurate.

Numerical Studies For Solving Fractional Riccati Differential Equation, N. H. Sweilam, M. M. Khader, A. M. S. Mahdy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, finite difference method (FDM) and Pade'-variational iteration method (Pade'- VIM) are successfully implemented for solving the nonlinear fractional Riccati differential equation. The fractional derivative is described in the Caputo sense. The existence and the uniqueness of the proposed problem are given. The resulting nonlinear system of algebraic equations from FDM is solved by using Newton iteration method; moreover the condition of convergence is verified. The convergence's domain of the solution is improved and enlarged by Pade'-VIM technique. The results obtained by using FDM is compared with Pade'-VIM. It should be noted that the Pade'-VIM is preferable because …

An Approximate Analytical Algorithm For Solving The Multispecies Lotka-Volterra Equations, Abdolsaeed Alavi, Asghar Ghorbani
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a new efficient method called the parametric iteration method (PIM) is applied to accurately solve the multispecies Lotka–Volterra equations (MLVEs). Some cases of MLVEs are highlighted in order to show the simplicity and efficiency of the method. The results obtained in this work demonstrate that the present algorithm is a powerful analytic tool for the solution of MLVEs.

In this paper, we implemented modification of truncated expansion method for the exact solutions of the Konopelchenko-Dubrovsky equation the (n+1)-dimensional combined sinhcosh- Gordon equation and the Maccari system. Modification of truncated expansion method is a powerful solution method for obtaining exact solutions of nonlinear evolution equations. This method presents a wider applicability for handling nonlinear wave equations.

Two Reliable Methods For Solving The Modified Improved Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equation, N. Taghizadeh, S. R. Moosavi Noori
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, the tanh-coth method and the extended (G'/G)-expansion method are used to construct exact solutions of the nonlinear Modified Improved Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (MIKP) equation. These methods transform nonlinear partial differential equation to ordinary differential equation and can be applied to nonintegrable equation as well as integrable ones. It has been shown that the two methods are direct, effective and can be used for many other nonlinear evolution equations in mathematical physics.

Dark Solitons Of The Qiao's Hierarchy, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons
Articles
We obtain a class of soliton solutions of the integrable hierarchy which has been put forward in a series of works by Z. Qiao. The soliton solutions are in the class of real functions approaching constant value fast enough at infinity, the so-called 'dark solitons'.
G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov, James Percival
G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov, James Percival
Articles
A G-strand is a map g(t,s): RxR --> G for a Lie group G that follows from Hamilton's principle for a certain class of G-invariant Lagrangians. The SO(3)-strand is the G-strand version of the rigid body equation and it may be regarded physically as a continuous spin chain. Here, SO(3)K-strand dynamics for ellipsoidal rotations is derived as an Euler-Poincar'e system for a certain class of variations and recast as a Lie-Poisson system for coadjoint flow with the same Hamiltonian structure as for a perfect complex fluid. For a special Hamiltonian, the SO(3) …

Thermal Detection Of Inaccessible Corrosion, Matthew Charnley, Andrew Rzeznik
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
In this paper, we explore the mathematical inverse problem of detecting corroded material on the reverse side of a partially accessible metal plate. We will show how a linearization can be used to simplify the initial problem and explain a regularization method used to obtain acceptable results for the corrosion profile. We will also state and perform some calculations for the full three-dimensional problem for possible future work.

Research Vignettes
In this worksheet we symbolically construct the formal inverse of the total derivative operator and use it to construct the recursion operator for the higher-order symmetries of the KdV equation. Using this recursion operator we generate the first 5 generalized symmetries of the KdV equation and verify that they all commute.

Boundary Stabilization Of Torsional Vibrations Of A Solar Panel, Prasanta K. Nandi, Ganesh C. Gorain, Samarjit Kar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we study a boundary stabilization of the torsional vibrations of a solar panel. The panel is held by a rigid hub at one end and is totally free at the other. The dynamics of the overall system leads to hybrid system of equations. It is set to a certain initial vibrations with a control torque as a stabilizer at the hub end only. Taking a non-linear damping as boundary stabilizer, a uniform exponential energy decay rate is obtained directly. Thus an explicit form of uniform stabilization of the system is achieved by means of the exponential energy …

Introducing An Efficient Modification Of The Variational Iteration Method By Using Chebyshev Polynomials, M. M. Khader
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article an efficient modification of the variational iteration method (VIM) is presented using Chebyshev polynomials. Special attention is given to study the convergence of the proposed method. The new modification is tested for some examples to demonstrate reliability and efficiency of the proposed method. A comparison of our numerical results those of the conventional numerical method, the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method (RK4) are given. The comparison shows that the solution using our modification is fast-convergent and is in excellent conformance with the exact solution. Finally, we conclude that the proposed method can be applied to a large class of …

A Duhamel Integral Based Approach To Identify An Unknown Radiation Term In A Heat Equation With Non-Linear Boundary Condition, R. Pourgholi, M. Abtahi, A. Saeedi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we consider the determination of an unknown radiation term in the nonlinear boundary condition of a linear heat equation from an overspecified condition. First we study the existence and uniqueness of the solution via an auxiliary problem. Then a numerical method consisting of zeroth-, first-, and second-order Tikhonov regularization method to the matrix form of Duhamel's principle for solving the inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP) using temperature data containing significant noise is presented. The stability and accuracy of the scheme presented is evaluated by comparison with the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method. Some numerical experiments confirm the …

New Explicit Solutions For Homogeneous Kdv Equations Of Third Order By Trigonometric And Hyperbolic Function Methods, Marwan Alquran, Roba Al-Omary, Qutaibeh Katatbeh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we study two-component evolutionary systems of the homogeneous KdV equation of the third order types (I) and (II). Trigonometric and hyperbolic function methods such as the sine-cosine method, the rational sine-cosine method, the rational sinh-cosh method, sech-csch method and rational tanh-coth method are used for analytical treatment of these systems. These methods, have the advantage of reducing the nonlinear problem to a system of algebraic equations that can be solved by computerized packages.

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we show the applicability of the first integral method for obtaining exact solutions of some nonlinear partial differential equations. By using this method, we found some exact solutions of the Landau-Ginburg-Higgs equation and generalized form of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and approximate long water wave equations. The first integral method is a direct algebraic method for obtaining exact solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations. This method can be applied to nonintegrable equations as well as to integrable ones. This method is based on the theory of commutative algebra.

An Approximate Solution Of The Mathieu Fractional Equation By Using The Generalized Differential Transform Method (Gdtm), H. S. Najafi, S. R. Mirshafaei, E. A. Toroqi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The generalized differential transform method (GDTM) is a powerful tool for solving fractional equations. In this paper we solve the Mathieu fractional equation by this method. The approximate solutions obtained are compared with the exact solution. We also show that if both differential orders decrease, we can still have an approximate solution in the different interval of p.

Modelling Two-Dimensional Photopolymer Patterns Produced With Multiple-Beam Holography, Dana Mackey, Tsvetanka Babeva, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal
Conference papers
Periodic structures referred to as photonic crystals attract considerable interest due to their potential applications in areas such as nanotechnology, photonics, plasmonics, etc. Among various techniques used for their fabrication, multiple-beam holography is a promising method enabling defect-free structures to be produced in a single step over large areas.
In this paper we use a mathematical model describing photopolymerisation to simulate two-dimensional structures produced by the interference pattern of three noncoplanar beams. The holographic recording of different lattices is studied by variation of certain parameters such as beam wave vectors, time and intensity of illumination.
Pointwise Schauder Estimates Of Parabolic Equations In Carnot Groups, Heather Arielle Griffin
Pointwise Schauder Estimates Of Parabolic Equations In Carnot Groups, Heather Arielle Griffin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Schauder estimates were a historical stepping stone for establishing uniqueness and smoothness of solutions for certain classes of partial differential equations. Since that time, they have remained an essential tool in the field. Roughly speaking, the estimates state that the Holder continuity of the coefficient functions and inhomogeneous term implies the Holder continuity of the solution and its derivatives. This document establishes pointwise Schauder estimates for second order parabolic equations where the traditional role of derivatives are played by vector fields generated by the first layer of the Lie algebra stratification for a Carnot group. The Schauder estimates are shown …
Valuation Of Financial Derivatives Subject To Liquidity Risk, Yanan Jiang
Valuation Of Financial Derivatives Subject To Liquidity Risk, Yanan Jiang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Valuation of financial derivatives subject to liquidity risk remains an open problem in finance. This dissertation focuses on the valuation of European-style call option under limited market liquidity through the dynamic management of a portfolio of assets. We investigate liquidity from three perspectives: market breadth, depth, and immediacy. We present a general framework of valuation based on the optimal realization of a performance index relative to the set of all feasible portfolio trajectories. Numerical examples are then presented and analyzed that show option price increases as the market transitions from liquid to less liquid state. Furthermore, buying and selling activities, …

Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard
Articles
We establish geometric properties of Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds which arise in relation to Slatertype variational spaces in many-particle Hartree-Fock theory and beyond. In particular, we prove thatthey are analytic homogeneous spaces and submanifolds of the space of bounded operators on the single-particle Hilbert space. As a by-product we obtain that they are complete Finsler manifolds. These geometric properties underpin state-of-the-art results on existence of solutions to Hartree-Fock type equations.

We consider an integrable hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEE) related to linear bundle Lax operator L. The Lax representation is Z2 \times Z2 reduced and is naturally associated with the symmetric space SU(3)/S(U(1) \times U(2)). The simplest nontrivial equation in the hierarchy is a generalization of Heisenberg ferromagnetic model. We construct the N-soliton solutions for an arbitrary member of the hierarchy by using the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method with an appropriately chosen dressing factor. Two types of soliton solutions: quadruplet and doublet solitons are found. The one-soliton solutions of NLEEs with even and odd dispersion laws have different properties. In …

Abstract
The asymptotic stability of solutions of the Mindlin-type microstructure model for solids is analyzed in the paper. It is shown that short waves are asymptotically stable even in the case of a weakly non-convex free energy dependence on microdeformation.
Research highlights
The Mindlin-type microstructure model cannot describe properly short wave propagation in laminates. A modified Mindlin-type microstructure model with weakly non-convex free energy resolves this discrepancy. It is shown that the improved model with weakly non-convex free energy is asymptotically stable for short waves.

Controlling Nanoparticles Formation In Molten Metallic Bilayers By Pulsed-Laser Interference Heating, Mikhail Khenner, Sagar Yadavali, Ramki Kalyanaraman
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The impacts of the two-beam interference heating on the number of core-shell and embedded nanoparticles and on nanostructure coarsening are studied numerically based on the non-linear dynamical model for dewetting of the pulsed-laser irradiated, thin (< 20 nm) metallic bilayers. The model incorporates thermocapillary forces and disjoining pressures, and assumes dewetting from the optically transparent substrate atop of the reflective support layer, which results in the complicated dependence of light reflectivity and absorption on the thicknesses of the layers. Stabilizing thermocapillary effect is due to the local thickness-dependent, steady- state temperature profile in the liquid, which is derived based on the mean substrate temperature estimated from the elaborate thermal model of transient heating and melting/freezing. Linear stability analysis of the model equations set for Ag/Co bilayer predicts the dewetting length scales in the qualitative agreement with experiment.
