Differential Equation Modeling For Sustainable Resource Management: A Steady-State Optimal Harvesting Approach, Iordanka N. Panayotova, Aleksei Talonov Sep 2026

Differential Equation Modeling For Sustainable Resource Management: A Steady-State Optimal Harvesting Approach, Iordanka N. Panayotova, Aleksei Talonov

CODEE Journal

Mathematical models based on differential equations provide a powerful framework for connecting real-world data to informed decision-making. In this work, we present a student-accessible project that uses an optimal-control framework to study the sustainable management of biological resources.

Motivated by fisheries management, we examine a predator--prey system in which harvesting decisions must balance ecological and economic considerations. The model is formulated as an optimal control problem that seeks to maximize the total discounted net revenue from harvesting. Rather than solving for the complete time-dependent harvesting trajectory, we restrict the analysis to positive controlled coexistence equilibria and characterize an interior stationary …

A Modeling Scenario For Cooling A Hot Vehicle In Florida, Jared Bunn, Bernadette Mullins, Elizabeth Hale, Jaeyoun Oh Aug 2026

A Modeling Scenario For Cooling A Hot Vehicle In Florida, Jared Bunn, Bernadette Mullins, Elizabeth Hale, Jaeyoun Oh

CODEE Journal

This paper presents a group project assigned in a Calculus 2 course that has students work to develop, analyze, and draw conclusions about a modeling scenario for cooling a hot car. Using a modeling-first approach, instructors supported the students in class throughout the beginning of the project, enabling the groups to complete the remainder of the project on their own. Students used parameter estimation to tune their models to provided data: one for windows being up, and one for windows being down. This project provides an example of how modeling can be introduced early in a calculus course, rather than …

Waiting For The Magic: A Historical And Mathematical Study Of Queues In Disney Theme Parks, Nina E. Becket

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This paper, written as part of an honors research project in high school, provides an introduction to the line and queuing systems at Disney theme parks. We begin with a brief history of Disney World and its creators. We then introduce the basics of queuing theory and queuing notation. Finally, we examine modern line systems at Disney (as of 2023) and the future of its different queue systems.

Piracy, Terrorism, And The Law: Differential Equations In Hostage Situations, Gabriel Hallevy Jul 2026

Piracy, Terrorism, And The Law: Differential Equations In Hostage Situations, Gabriel Hallevy

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Pirates have taken the crew of an American ship hostage. They promise to release the hostages only if another pirate who is held in an American prison for commission of piracy crimes against American citizens, is released. Should the U.S. government enter into negotiations with them? Should they send armed forces and risk the hostages? Should they release the prisoner immediately and unconditionally? The article models and analyzes possible policies regarding sensitive situations involving hostages and other related risks using differential equations. The solutions are surprisingly simple, but not necessarily intuitive. Our analysis aims to demonstrate how powerful mathematics is …

A Method For Folding Origami Rectilinear Polygon Extrusions, Everett L. Jin Jul 2026

A Method For Folding Origami Rectilinear Polygon Extrusions, Everett L. Jin

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

We present a method for generating crease patterns for folding any rectilinear polygon extrusion with a specified uniform minimum edge-to-edge distance, using a rectangular sheet of paper. We demonstrate that the resulting models are efficient and watertight. In addition, they achieve optimal efficiency, meaning they attain the smallest possible scale factor from the original sheet of paper to the folded rectilinear polygon extrusion. Finally, we provide a code implementation of the method. Our study not only facilitates crease pattern design for origami artists but also offers an innovative, art-driven pedagogical tool for inspiring interest in mathematics.

A Differential Equation–Based Epidemiological Model Of Post-Operative Chronic Pain In Scoliosis Patients With Data-Driven Analysis, Paige Zhu, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer Jul 2026

A Differential Equation–Based Epidemiological Model Of Post-Operative Chronic Pain In Scoliosis Patients With Data-Driven Analysis, Paige Zhu, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer

CODEE Journal

Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) is a common and often overlooked complication following surgical correction of idiopathic scoliosis, impacting long-term patient wellbeing despite improvements in surgical outcomes. This project introduces a novel epidemiological framework to model the progression of CPSP using a compartmental structure. By applying a coupled system of nonlinear differential equations, we simulate pain trajectories over time and assess the effectiveness of surgical interventions. The model is implemented for a single-cohort population and extended to a two-cohort design to compare outcomes between Posterior Spinal Fusion (PSIF) and Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) procedures. Further stratification by patient age enables us …

From Cork To Coasting: A Multi-Stage Ode Model Of Water-Rocket Flight, Viktoria Savatorova, Patryk Kustra, Ethan Dyer, Connor Carlson, Aleksei Talonov Jun 2026

From Cork To Coasting: A Multi-Stage Ode Model Of Water-Rocket Flight, Viktoria Savatorova, Patryk Kustra, Ethan Dyer, Connor Carlson, Aleksei Talonov

CODEE Journal

Water rockets provide an affordable and engaging context for exploring applications of differential equations. Motivated by outreach activities conducted with undergraduate students, we develop a four-stage mathematical model of vertical water-rocket flight that is suitable for use in an ODE or mathematical modeling course. The model includes the cork-release phase, water-thrust propulsion, air-thrust propulsion with compressible and potentially choked flow, and the final ballistic stage with quadratic drag. While retaining key physical features, the model can be formulated as a system of ordinary differential equations that can be integrated numerically using tools familiar to students. We compare model predictions with …

Pinnlab: An Interactive Dashboard For Teaching Data-Driven Parameter Estimation In Differential Equations Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks, Mohan J. Parthasarathy, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer Jun 2026

Pinnlab: An Interactive Dashboard For Teaching Data-Driven Parameter Estimation In Differential Equations Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks, Mohan J. Parthasarathy, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer

CODEE Journal

Undergraduate instruction in ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is typically organized around the forward problem: finding solution trajectories when the governing equation and its parameters are known. In scientific practice, however, inverse problems are often more relevant, requiring unknown parameters to be inferred from noisy observations while assessing whether a proposed model is consistent with the data. We introduce PINNLab, an open-source MATLAB dashboard designed to help undergraduate students explore inverse modeling through physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). PINNLab presents PINNs as a complementary data-driven framework that connects differential equations, optimization, empirical data, and scientific machine learning. The instructional sequence is organized …

A Professional Development Course On Data-Driven Dynamical Systems At A Primarily Undergraduate Institution: Part A - Scientific Content, Alessandro M. Selvitella, Jeffrey R. Anderson

CODEE Journal

In the age of data-driven decision making, ordinary differential equations (ODEs) remain a powerful and interpretable framework for modeling dynamic processes, especially when integrated with modern tools from statistical learning and data-driven dynamical systems. Yet, general undergraduate and graduate curricula do not typically address key opportunities in data-driven dynamical systems.

This first paper in a series focuses on the mathematical and methodological core of a professional development course first developed in the academic year 2025-2026 at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution, Purdue University Fort Wayne. The curriculum developed in this course emphasized how regression, regularization, and sparse identification can be used …

Machine Learning For Modeling In An Elementary Differential Equations Class, Nathan Albin, Andrew G. Bennett, Abhinav Chand May 2026

Machine Learning For Modeling In An Elementary Differential Equations Class, Nathan Albin, Andrew G. Bennett, Abhinav Chand

CODEE Journal

Mixing machine learning with modeling is an area of increasing importance. This paper presents a lesson where students model a spring-mass system both using traditional analysis with linear damping and using machine learning to learn the damping from real data. The machine learning is implemented in a Jupyter notebook hosted on Google Colab, allowing students to train the neural network without requiring the students to carry out coding. Students get experience with how machine learning can fail, how it can work, and the time and data requirements for machine learning to succeed, and are asked to apply this knowledge to …

Fractsynth: Exploring Glitch Timbres With Chaos Theory, Aidan Roach Apr 2026

Fractsynth: Exploring Glitch Timbres With Chaos Theory, Aidan Roach

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

In this paper, I explore how chaos theory can be used to design a new kind of synthesizer with the primary focus of producing glitchy, unpredictable sounds. Glitch music embraces abstract sound design, malfunctioning electronics, and randomness as the main compositional elements. However, most synthesizers rely on stable, repetitive oscillators that often sound too controlled. To challenge this, I developed FractSynth, a real-time synthesizer that uses chaotic attractors–including the Logistic Map, Henon Map, and Lorenz System–as modulation sources for frequency, amplitude, and tone. The software also features real-time Lyapunov Exponent Tracking, which gives users a direct visual of how …

The Butterfly Effect In Economics: Exploring Chaos With A Simple Financial Model, Sandy Hs Herho Feb 2026

The Butterfly Effect In Economics: Exploring Chaos With A Simple Financial Model, Sandy Hs Herho

CODEE Journal

Wild swings in financial markets need not result from external shocks like earthquakes or wars—they can emerge from deterministic chaos. This article introduces kalimusada, an open-source Python library that lets students and instructors explore this phenomenon through a simple three- equation model of financial dynamics. The model couples interest rates, investment, and prices through nonlinear feedback, generating bounded but unpredictable oscillations characteristic of chaos. Tiny differences in starting conditions—smaller than any measurement could detect—grow exponentially until two initially identical economies follow completely different paths. The library provides ready-to-use tools for visualizing this “butterfly effect” in economics, computing divergence metrics, and …

Making Mathematical Art Via The Harmonic And Perturbed Harmonic Functions, Mehmet Pakdemirli Jan 2026

Making Mathematical Art Via The Harmonic And Perturbed Harmonic Functions, Mehmet Pakdemirli

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Starting from the definition of a harmonic function series, we define a new series which we call the perturbed harmonic function series. We explore the relationship of the new series with the Weierstrass and Riemann fractal functions as well as its convergence and differentiability properties. We then illustrate the potential of the harmonic functions in generating complex figures that sometimes resemble natural objects, with explicit numerical examples.

Gold And Silver In Balance: Khayyam’S Mathematical Analysis Of Binary Alloys, Yousef Yassi, Reza Yassi Jan 2026

Gold And Silver In Balance: Khayyam’S Mathematical Analysis Of Binary Alloys, Yousef Yassi, Reza Yassi

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The history of titration dates back to Archimedes who established that an object submerged in a liquid displaces an amount of liquid whose weight is equal to the buoyant force acting on the object. Since then, many scientists and engineers have tried to optimize his approach or devise new instruments for titration purposes. Omar Khayyam (1048–1123), in addition to designing a hydro-static balance, developed mathematical approaches for titration of binary alloys, that is, alloys made up of only two elements. Here we explore the different versions of Khayyam’s work on titration given by various sources. We also compare the accuracy …

Exploring The Dynamics Of Romantic Relationships Through The Lens Of Prem Rog, Umang Jain, Dheeraj Sharma, Pranay Goswami, Kuldeep Malik Jan 2026

Exploring The Dynamics Of Romantic Relationships Through The Lens Of Prem Rog, Umang Jain, Dheeraj Sharma, Pranay Goswami, Kuldeep Malik

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Romantic relationships are dynamic events that begin, grow, and frequently remain for a long time in a stagnant or fluctuating state until possibly dissipating. Although they are unquestionably the most significant dynamic events in our lives, dynamic systems theory has only recently included them in its formal framework. Without a mathematical model, it would be impossible to analyze and comprehend the dynamics because, in general, love stories are too brief to allow things to stabilize and are affected by the ups and downs of the surrounding community. In this paper, we set up models made up of four ordinary differential …

Toward Conditions For Consensus Of Noisy Bounded-Confidence Models, Madeline Reeve Jan 2026

Toward Conditions For Consensus Of Noisy Bounded-Confidence Models, Madeline Reeve

HMC Senior Theses

Models of opinion dynamics aim to describe the spread of opinions over time in a social network. However, many canonical models are deterministic and thus may fail to capture uncertainty present in social interactions. This work investigates the effect of adding noise into bounded-confidence models, a class of opinion dynamics models where agents are more likely to be influenced by opinions close to their own. In particular, we propose a noisy modification of the Deffuant–Weisbuch bounded-confidence model. We prove that in this model all agents eventually adopt the same opinion—that is, our model converges to consensus. In doing so, we …

Modeling French Language Preservation: An Optimal Control Problem, Charlotte Blasi Jan 2026

Modeling French Language Preservation: An Optimal Control Problem, Charlotte Blasi

Scripps Senior Theses

The French language is one of the most globally spoken languages, with over 300 million speakers and designated the official language of 29 nations. French continues to prosper as a result of its titular nations' imperialist history that emphasized linguistic diffusion as well as the support of international organizations dedicated to promoting both the language and the culture of French-speaking nations. In this thesis, we explore the nuanced history of French-speaking countries and one institution dedicated  to promoting the French language, the OIF. We further examine the media mechanism of the OIF and construct a system of Ordinary Differential Equations …

Expanding Ode Examples: Introducing Gene Regulation Dynamics Through Hill Functions, Maila Hallare, Jane M. Santamore Nov 2025

Expanding Ode Examples: Introducing Gene Regulation Dynamics Through Hill Functions, Maila Hallare, Jane M. Santamore

CODEE Journal

Gene regulation is a fundamental biological process that controls gene expression. It can explain phenomena such as cell differentiation, circadian rhythms, disease progression, and metabolic control, among many others. Despite their importance in mathematical biology, gene regulation models are rarely featured in traditional ODE textbooks, which focus mainly on examples from engineering, physics, chemistry, and population biology. This article introduces gene regulation dynamics as a valuable addition to ODE curricula, presenting the models from a mathematical perspective and building on properties of the Hill function. These models deepen the understanding of biology-inspired ODE applications, provide accessible research opportunities for students, …

Analytical And Numerical Approaches To Parameter Estimation In Damped Oscillatory Systems, Gracie Crooks, F. Ayça Çetinkaya Sep 2025

Analytical And Numerical Approaches To Parameter Estimation In Damped Oscillatory Systems, Gracie Crooks, F. Ayça Çetinkaya

CODEE Journal

We investigate the inverse problem of identifying damping and stiffness parameters in one-dimensional damped oscillatory systems governed by second-order differential equations. Focusing on mass–spring–damper models, we analyze the qualitative behavior of solutions across underdamped, critically damped, and overdamped regimes, and derive explicit conditions for parameter recovery based on time-domain observations such as equilibrium crossings and turnaround points. Two numerical estimation methods are developed and compared: a finite-difference least-squares approach based on central difference approximations, and a finite element formulation derived from a variational framework using piecewise linear basis functions. Computational experiments using synthetic data assess the accuracy, stability, and noise …

Project-Based Learning With Odes: Modeling Straw Rocket Motion With Air Resistance, Viktoria Savatorova, Ethan Dyer, Aleksei Talonov Aug 2025

Project-Based Learning With Odes: Modeling Straw Rocket Motion With Air Resistance, Viktoria Savatorova, Ethan Dyer, Aleksei Talonov

CODEE Journal

This paper presents a hands-on project that guides students through building and validating a mathematical model of projectile motion. The project starts with the idealized case of motion under gravity without air resistance and then introduces air drag : first as a linear force, and then as a nonlinear quadratic force, with the Reynolds number providing the justification for the quadratic model. Students perform experiments with vertical and angled launches, capturing and analyzing motion data using video analysis software. Vertical launch data allows parameter estimation via least squares fitting of the nonlinear drag model, yielding values for initial velocity and …

Modeling Covid-19 Spread And Effects Of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions On A College Campus, Jakob Kotas, Priscilla Perey Ratonel Feb 2025

Modeling Covid-19 Spread And Effects Of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions On A College Campus, Jakob Kotas, Priscilla Perey Ratonel

CODEE Journal

We consider an extension to the classical SIR compartmental model from mathematical epidemiology as applied to the spread of COVID-19 on a college campus. While the classical SIR model does not allow for recovered individuals to lose immunity, we alter the equations to allow for such (due to the rise of new variants), leading to a SIRS-type model. We study the system of ODEs analytically and through numerical simulation. Finally we discuss a quantitative approach for how college administrators can decide when to implement stricter non-pharmaceutical interventions (social distancing, mask mandates, quarantine, etc.) to eradicate the infection from the campus …

Collision Avoidance And Vegetation As Drivers Of Collective Motion In Australian Plague Locusts, Nathan S. Hasegawa Jan 2025

Collision Avoidance And Vegetation As Drivers Of Collective Motion In Australian Plague Locusts, Nathan S. Hasegawa

HMC Senior Theses

The Australian plague locust (Chortoicetes terminifera) is an agricultural and ecological pest that causes tens of millions of dollars in crop damage each year. In this thesis, we develop mathematical models of hopper bands, dense formations of juvenile locusts that move across a vegetated field and destroy plants in their path. We develop agent-based and PDE models of hopper bands moving through vegetation to examine how recently discovered behavior where locusts slow down to avoid collisions with other locusts may influence the shape, speed, and destructiveness of hopper bands. We find that collision avoidance may cause locusts to …

Diophantine Avoidance, Number Fields, And Quadratic Forms, Sehun Jeong Jan 2025

Diophantine Avoidance, Number Fields, And Quadratic Forms, Sehun Jeong

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Diophantine avoidance has been studied by several authors in recent years. This term refers to effective results on existence of points of bounded size (where size is measured by norm or height, depending on the context) in a given algebraic set avoiding some specified subsets. The application of avoidance conditions allows to understand how ``well distributed" are points of bounded size in a given set. If it is possible to find them outside of some prescribed collection of subsets of the set in question, then it suggests that they are evenly distributed, in some appropriate sense. Our first result investigates …

Optimizing Decision-Making In A Cerebral Palsy Model Using Reinforcement Learning, Richard Ampah Jan 2025

Optimizing Decision-Making In A Cerebral Palsy Model Using Reinforcement Learning, Richard Ampah

Pitzer Senior Theses

This study presents an original interdisciplinary investigation into how reinforcement learning (RL) can model motor and cognitive defects and potentially improve motor and cognitive functions in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), a non-progressive neurological disorder that impairs movement and adaptability. Integrating computational neuroscience and machine learning, the research applies policy gradient methods and Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) to simulate adaptive learning in agents with and without CP-related constraints.

The central aim is to compare the cumulative rewards of optimal policies, derived from value iteration, and human-like learning policies using the REINFORCE algorithm, both with and without the Bellman baseline. The …

Forecasting Equity Betas Using Option-Implied Moments, Ivan Kolesnikov Jan 2025

Forecasting Equity Betas Using Option-Implied Moments, Ivan Kolesnikov

CMC Senior Theses

Traditional beta estimates are constructed from historical stock‑and‑market returns and therefore adjust only as fast as realized data accrue. This thesis investigates whether the forward‑looking information embedded in equity‑option prices can enhance beta forecasts. Using near‑end‑of‑day quotes for 236 S&P 500 firms between 2007 and 2024, I extract risk‑neutral variance and skewness, construct five alternative beta estimators (historical, option‑implied, and three hybrids), and evaluate them against realized betas over six‑, twelve‑, and twenty‑four‑month windows. Rolling‑OLS beta remains the most accurate benchmark at short horizons, yet option‑implied moments add economically and statistically significant value when systematic exposure is expected to change …

Integrating Sentiment Analysis In Predictive Models: A Comparative Study On Game Popularity On Steam, Khaleefa Alhemeiri

CMC Senior Theses

Over the past decades, the gaming industry has managed to evolve into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise. Gaming platforms such as Steam foster unprecedented amounts of engagement among players worldwide daily. In this thesis, we investigate the effect of incorporating sentiment-driven metrics, specifically YouTube view counts and positive reviews, into predictive models for game popularity. In addition, by comparing our linear regression sentiment-based approach to the Bayesian hierarchical folded normal model used by De Luisa et al. (2021), we can understand the many differences, strengths, and limitations of each methodology. In our thesis, we focus on three games. Each is of varying …

Mathematical Modeling Of Cancer Tumor Evolution, Belgacem Al-Azem Jan 2025

Mathematical Modeling Of Cancer Tumor Evolution, Belgacem Al-Azem

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Several mathematical models of cancer tumor evolution are presented. The aim of this endeavor is to write a thesis that fosters numerical and analytical understanding of certain mathematical models in the area of oncology as well as to offer potential predictive tools of therapeutic and clinical applicability. In this work, we give a panoramic view of the cancer phenotype, for to understand cancer, we need to "see" its biophysics. Indeed, the discovery of oncogenes led to the thinking that cancer tumor is perhaps a genetic disease. But the role of angiogenesis and other microenvironment-related discoveries (such as the role of …

Weathering And Beyond: Leveraging Mathematical Modeling To Simulate Erosion In Digital Media, Fiona Irving-Beck Jan 2025

Weathering And Beyond: Leveraging Mathematical Modeling To Simulate Erosion In Digital Media, Fiona Irving-Beck

Scripps Senior Theses

How might we bring an idea to life from both a mathematical and an artistic perspective? Within Weathering, I use imagery of environmental erosion to explore the differences between physical and digital forms of representation. I created a physical painting of an abandoned copper mine, digitized the work, and then used a mathematical model to digitally “erode” it, which I re-translated into paintings. While the explicit texture present in physical work speaks best to my practice/intent, the mathematical framework that is the basis for my digital work affords a powerful mode of temporal flexibility. Used in conjunction, these two …

Mathematical Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation Of Patient Addiction Journey, Adan Baca, Diego Gonzalez, Alonso G. Ogueda, Holly C. Matto, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer Aug 2024

Mathematical Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation Of Patient Addiction Journey, Adan Baca, Diego Gonzalez, Alonso G. Ogueda, Holly C. Matto, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer

CODEE Journal

This paper aims to develop a mathematical model to study the dynamics of addiction as individuals go through their detox journey. The motivation for this work is three fold. First, there has been a significant increase in drug overdose and drug addiction following the COVID-19 pandemic, and addiction may be interpreted as a infectious disease. Secondly, the dynamics of infectious disease could be modeled via compartmental models described by differential equations and one can therefore leverage the existing analytical and numerical methods to model addiction as a disease. Finally, the work helps to inform how mathematical models governed by differential …
