Perovskite materials have attracted significant attention as innovative and efficient X-ray detectors owing to their unique properties compared to traditional X-ray detectors. Herein, chronologically, we present an in-depth analysis of X-ray detection technologies employing organic-inorganic hybrids (OIHs), all-inorganic and lead-free perovskite material-based single crystals (SCs), thin/thick films and wafers. Particularly, this review systematically scrutinizes the advancement of the diverse synthesis methods, structural modifications, and device architectures exploited to enhance the radiation sensing performance. In addition, a critical analysis of the crucial factors affecting the performance of the devices is also provided. Our findings revealed that the improvement from single crystallization …
Aging An Ancient Maya Population From Actuncan, Belize Using Dental X-Rays, Kaitlyn Nicole Cash
Aging An Ancient Maya Population From Actuncan, Belize Using Dental X-Rays, Kaitlyn Nicole Cash
Honors Theses
My goal is to determine an accurate age at death estimation of an ancient Maya population from the archaeological site of Actuncan, Belize. This was done by measuring the lengths of the coronal pulp cavities in the individuals’ teeth. I used X-Ray images to measure the coronal pulp cavities of the teeth and estimated age using multiple regression formulae for premolars, molars, and incisors to make age estimations. The formulae came from two studies, Ikeda et al. (1985) and Drusini (2008), that form the basis of my research. Ikeda et al. (1985) was the first to use this aging method, …

Galectins constitute a family of galactose-binding lectins overly expressed in the tumor microenvironment as well as in innate and adaptive immune cells, in inflammatory diseases. Lactose ((β-D-galactopyranosyl)-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranose, Lac) and N-Acetyllactosamine (2-acetamido-2-deoxy-4-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-glucopyranose, LacNAc) have been widely exploited as ligands for a wide range of galectins, sometimes with modest selectivity. Even though several chemical modifications at single positions of the sugar rings have been applied to these ligands, very few examples combined the simultaneous modifications at key positions known to increase both affinity and selectivity. We report herein combined modifications at the anomeric position, C-2, and O-3′ of each of the two …

Single-Shot, Ultrafast, Multi-Frame X-Ray Imaging Of Defect-Bearing Ablator Materials In Extreme Conditions, Daniel S. Hodge
Theses and Dissertations
Characterization of the dynamic behavior of defect-bearing ablator materials subjected to extreme conditions is essential in advancing fusion energy as an reliable and abundant energy source. By understanding how materials evolve spatially and temporally we can minimize hydrodynamic instabilities, which are major contributing factors to energy yield degradation in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. In this thesis we demonstrate the capabilities of an ultrafast x-ray imaging (UXI) detector, the Icarus V2, where we capture multiple frames of single void-bearing sample compressed by a high-intensity laser shockwave. Using the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source …
Emergent Spectra Of Young X-Ray Emitting Populations Across Environments, Alex Siebenmorgen
Emergent Spectra Of Young X-Ray Emitting Populations Across Environments, Alex Siebenmorgen
Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses
We construct reasonably accurate models of the X-Ray spectra of a multitude of sources in M51. We construct both average and individual models for the sources, which are split into 16 groups as the counts per source increases. Then, we create a plot to show how the model-predicted values of column density (nH) and photon index (gamma) change with luminosity. These models will be used to create an accurate X-Ray stellar energy distribution (SED) for M51, and to better understand how the SED changes with environmental factors like metallicity and star formation rate (SFR).

Therapy And Medical Imaging Applications Of Focusing Polycapillary X-Ray Optics, Weiyuan Sun
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Focusing polycapillary optics yield high gains in intensity and increased spatial resolution for a variety of clinical, lab-based, synchrotron, or in situ analysis applications. In this dissertation we investigate the extension of two applications of focusing polycapillary optics. The first is the application of polycapillary optics in radiation therapy. This discussion includes measurements and calculation of dose for focused beam orthovoltage therapy. A system has been designed to investigate whether the polycapillary optics can produce an X-ray beam which can give more accurate dose painting due to the higher dose concentration at the focal spot. X-ray exposures were measured with …

The widespread use of medical imaging devices allows deep analysis of diseases. However, the task of examining medical images increases the burden of specialist doctors. Computer-assisted systems provide an effective management tool that enables these images to be analyzed automatically. Although these tools are used for various purposes, today, they are moving towards retrieval systems to access increasing data quickly. In hospitals, the need for content-based image retrieval systems is seriously evident in order to store all images effectively and access them quickly when necessary. In this study, an attention-based end-to-end convolutional neural network (CNN)framework that can provide effective access …

Modeling The Obscuring Features In Active Galactic Nuclei: An X-Ray Analysis Of Ngc 1052, Samantha E. Cabral
Graduate Masters Theses
We present a multi-epoch analysis of the X-ray spectrum of NGC 1052, a nearby galaxy notorious for its well-studied spectral variability. We utilize observations from NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, Chandra, Swift, Suzaku, BeppoSAX, and ASCA to create a comprehensive set of data that spans roughly 20 years. Organizing our data by observation date and grouping into specific epochs allows us to explore a model allowed to flex and accommodate any spectral changes that occur over time in the X-ray spectrum of NGC 1052. We find that the spectrum takes on a relatively flat nature and is best modeled with two neutral absorption …

The solid solution (CuxZn(1-x))0.456In1.084Ge0.46O3 (CuZIGO) has a complex structure where zinc and copper partially occupy a site shared by indium and germanium. ZIGO, the x = 0 endpoint, is a potential transparent conducting oxide (TCO) with similar conductivity and transparency to cubic In2O3, which, when doped with Sn4+, is the most prevalent TCO. ZIGO structure possesses a tetragonal structure and has the ability to produce multiple new phases with an array of properties that are beneficial to identify and understand. Analyzing this structure is best done through chemical substitution to identify the newly produced phases. Copper is a suitable choice …

In the title molecule, C22H16O, the indanone ring system is approximately planar with a dihedral angle between the fused rings of 5.13 (14)°. Two benzene rings are linked together at one side of a double bond, sitting on either side of the indanone ring system and making dihedral angles of 70.30 (12) and 44.74 (13)° with it. In the crystal, hydrogen bonding is not present, but weak C—H⋯π or π–π interactions occur and molecules form a sheet-like structure in the bc plane.

The nucleophilic substitution reactions of mono- and bis-spiro-2,2' -dioxybiphenyl cyclotriphosphazenes (3 and 4) with cyclopropanemethylamine (5) and aniline (6) were performed in the presence of trimethylamine in THF. Five novel cyclopropanemethylamino- and anilino-substituted spiro-2,2' -dioxybiphenyl cyclotriphosphazene derivatives (7-11) were obtained from these reactions. The molecular structures of the new cyclotriphosphazene derivatives (7- 11) were characterized by elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF MS, FT-IR, and NMR ( $^{31}$P and $^{1}$H) spectroscopies. The structure of the spiro-(2,2' -dioxybiphenyl)-bis-(anilino)-cyclotriphosphazene (11) was also determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.

Background: As more protein atomic structures are determined from cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) density maps, validation of such structures is an important task. Methods: We applied a histogram-based outlier score (HBOS) to six sets of cryo-EM atomic structures and five sets of X-ray atomic structures, including one derived from X-ray data with better than 1.5 Å resolution. Cryo-EM data sets contain structures released by December 2016 and those released between 2017 and 2019, derived from resolution ranges 0–4 Å and 4–6 Å respectively. Results: The distribution of HBOS values in five sets of X-ray structures show that HBOS is sensitive distinguishing …

The synthesis and characterization of ten new palladium(II) amine bis(phenolate) complexes is reported. Solution and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal the presence of both κ2-N,N and κ3-N,N,O binding modes in these square planar complexes. For complexes with sterically less demanding phenolate donors, addition of external acidic or basic reagents allows for the selective masking of a coordination site at Pd. Complexes bearing bulky cumyl substituents on phenolate donors exhibited unusual 1H NMR spectroscopic features that are consistent with an anagostic interaction with the palladium center. Computational analysis …

Why Protein Conformers In Molecular Dynamics Simulations Differ From Their Crystal Structures: A Thermodynamic Insight, Fi̇li̇ppo Pullara, Mao Wenzhi, Mert Gür
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Conformers generally deviate structurally from their starting X-ray crystal structures early in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Studies have recognized such structural differences and attempted to provide an explanation for and justify the necessity of MD equilibrations. However, a detailed explanation based on fundamental physics and validation on a large ensemble of protein structures is still missing. Here we provide the first thermodynamic insights into the radically different thermodynamic conditions of crystallization solutions and conventional MD simulations. Crystallization solution conditions can lead to nonphysiologically high ion concentrations, low temperatures, and crystal packing with strong specific protein--protein interactions, not present under physiological …

Cationic Ruthenium Complexes In Catalysis: The Activation Of Propargylic Alcohols Through Electronically Tuned Complexes, Matthew James Stark
Dissertations
With increasing complexity of metal complexes, it is of worthwhile interest to pursue systematic examinations of ligand modifications to study their impact on the reactivity of a catalyst. To that end, this study aimed to understand the effect electron-withdrawing ligands conveyed to catalytic activity in the etherification of propargylic alcohols and related reactions. A number of half-sandwich ruthenium complexes bearing ligands with varying electron–withdrawing properties were synthesized and structurally characterized. Their electronic and structural properties were investigated utilizing X-ray crystallography, revealing that the series of complexes did not vary significantly in structure. The complexes were studied electronically with cyclic voltammetry, …

The most heavily-obscured, luminous quasars might represent a specific phase of the evolution of the actively accreting supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, possibly related to mergers. We investigated a sample of the most luminous quasars at z ≈ 1 − 3 in the GOODS fields, selected in the mid-infrared band through detailed spectral energy distribution (SED) decomposition. The vast majority of these quasars (~80%) are obscured in the X-ray band and ~30% of them to such an extent, that they are undetected in some of the deepest (2 and 4 Ms) Chandra X-ray data. Although no clear relation …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) rely on a symbiosis with fungi for their nutrition. Symbiotic fungi are preserved and transported in specialized storage structures called mycangia. Although pivotal in the symbiosis, mycangia have been notoriously difficult to study, given their minute size and membranous structure. We compared the application of novel visualization methods for the study of mycangia, namely micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and laser ablation tomography (LATscan) with traditional paraffin sectioning. Micro-CT scanning has shown the greatest promise in new organ discovery, while sectioning remains the only method with sufficient resolution for cellular visualization. All three common types …

Characterizing Decaying Dark Matter: X-Ray Emission From Sterile Neutrinos, Murat Hüdaverdi̇
Turkish Journal of Physics
Recently, an unknown emission line at E $\sim$3.5 keV from several astrophysical objects has been detected. The line is suggested to be originating from decaying dark matter particles. The results have drawn great attention from the astrophysics and particle physics community. Since the detected line is significantly weak there has also been a long debate over the origin of this mysterious signal. The most accepted scenario is a radiatively decaying sterile neutrino of 7.1 keV in mass producing a monochromatic 3.5 keV line, which is observable in X-ray energy ranges. The problem has not been settled and further observations from …

Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is a structure determination method for large molecular complexes. As more and more atomic structures are determined using this technique, it is becoming possible to perform statistical characterization of side-chain conformations. Two data sets were involved to characterize block lengths for each of the 18 types of amino acids. One set contains 9131 structures resolved using X-ray crystallography from density maps with better than or equal to 1.5 Å resolutions, and the other contains 237 protein structures derived from cryo-EM density maps with 2-4 Å resolutions. The results show that the normalized probability density function of block …

We carried out spectroscopic analysis of the extracted stellar flare of the Algol binary system observed using the Suzaku satellite (OBSID: 401093010), and resolved a strong 6.7 keV line emission. The 6.7 keV line emission of the Algol binary system is similar to the 6.7 keV line of the galactic ridge X-ray emission (GRXE). The equivalent width (EW) compared favorably with the EW of the 6.7 keV emission line obtained from different galactic ridge regions. In the galaxy, we have a reasonable number of Algol binary systems and many other stars as strong coronal X-ray emitters characterized by frequent quiescent …

Estimating Length Statistics Of Aggregate Fried Potato Product Via Electromagnetic Radiation Attenuation, Jesse Lovitt
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates the feasibility of using non-destructive testing, in particular radiation tomography, to recover length statistics from aggregates of fried batonnet cut potato. Non-destructive testing comprises a variety of useful techniques for determining properties of an object that might otherwise require altering or destroying the object physically. Tomography is a common form of non-destructive testing used primarily to infer properties internal to an object. This process involves exposing the object of interest to radiation and detecting the quantity of radiation energy that penetrates the object, usually resulting in a grey scale image.
To do this, an artificial data pipeline …

The research proposed here is expected to result in a crucial component used in a next-generation X-ray source. Typical conventional high-brightness X-ray sources (so-called synchrotron lightsources) are up to 30 football fields in size. Our group uses a novel technique based on ultrahigh-power lasers to develop a similar source that can readily fit into a single, university-scale laboratory. More specifically, the research conducted within this proposal will be concerned with the manipulation of beams of ultra-relativistic electrons, (electrons that move with almost the speed of light) with the goal to focus the particles into an area that is smaller than …

The Role Of Cold Gas In Low-Level Supermassive Black Hole Activity, Erik D. Alfvin
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
The nature of the relationship between low-level supermassive black hole activity and galactic cold gas, if any, is currently unclear. It has been hypothesized that feedback may heat or expel gas and quench star formation; alternatively, central black holes may feed at higher rates (either directly or as a secondary effect from stellar winds) in gas-rich galaxies. We use a combination of radio data from the on-going ALFALFA survey and from the literature, along with archival X-ray flux measurements from the Chandra X-ray observatory, to investigate this potential relationship. We construct a sample of 136 late-type galaxies, with MB < −18 out to 50 Mpc, that have both HI masses and sensitive X-ray coverage. Of these, 76 host a nuclear X-ray source, a 56% detection fraction. There is a highly significant correlation between LX and Mstar with a slope of 1.5±0.2, and a tentative correlation (significant at the 2.5σ level) between LX and MHI. However, a joint fit to LX as a function of both Mstar and MHI finds no significant dependence on MHI, and similarly the residuals of LX − LX(Mstar) show no trend with MHI. We conclude that the galaxy-wide cold gas content in these spirals does not strongly influence their low-level supermassive black hole activity.
