The Design And Synthesis Of New Organic Dithiols For Environmental Applications, Shashika Nadishani Bandara Jan 2022

The Design And Synthesis Of New Organic Dithiols For Environmental Applications, Shashika Nadishani Bandara

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

A thiol molecule, 2,6-pyridinediamidoethanethiol (PB9), was synthesized based on the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide scaffold with appended cysteamine groups. PB9 acts as an effective chelator for Pb(II) due to multiple binding sites (N3S2) through irreversible binding precipitating Pb(II). Removal of aqueous Pb(II) from solution was demonstrated by exploring the effects of time, initial PB9:Pb(II) ratios, pH, exposure time, and solution temperature. After 15 min the Pb(II) concentrations were reduced from 50.00 ppm to 0.30 ppm (99.4%) and 0.25 ppm (99.5%) for PB9:Pb ratios of 1:1 and 2:1, respectively. Removal of > 93% Pb(II) was observed over multiple pH values with …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The demands for electrochemical sensor materials with high strength and durability in physiological conditions continue to grow and novel approaches are being enabled by the advent of new electromaterials and novel fabrication technologies. Herein, we demonstrate a probe-style electrochemical sensor using highly flexible and conductive multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) yarns. The MWNT yarn-based sensors can be fabricated onto micro Pt-wire with a controlled diameter varying from 100 to 300 µm, and then further modified with Nafion via a dip-coating approach. The fabricated micro-sized sensors were characterized by electron microscopy, Raman, FTIR, electrical, and electrochemical measurements. For the first time, the …

Selective Iodination Using Diaryliodonium Salts, William H. Miller Iv Aug 2016

Selective Iodination Using Diaryliodonium Salts, William H. Miller Iv

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Aryl iodides have become widely recognized as versatile synthetic intermediates, owing to aromatic iodine’s excellent ability to participate in oxidative addition reactions. Iodoarenes readily undergo a variety of synthetic transformations including metal catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, diaryliodonium chemistry, formation of organometallics through reduction or metal-halogen exchange, as well as classical SN2 type chemistry. Because a wide array of transformations are available for aryl iodides, organic molecules containing this moiety often serve as vital precursors to highly desirable pharmaceuticals.

This thesis describes a simple and selective two-step approach to the formation of aryl iodides. This method proceeds through an easily …

Unraveling The Mechanism Of Selective Ion Transport In Hydrophobic Subnanometer Channels, Hui Li, Joseph S. Francisco, Xiao Cheng Zeng Jan 2015

Unraveling The Mechanism Of Selective Ion Transport In Hydrophobic Subnanometer Channels, Hui Li, Joseph S. Francisco, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Recently reported synthetic organic nanopore (SONP) can mimic a key feature of natural ion channels, i.e., selective ion transport. However, the physical mechanism underlying the K+/Na+ selectivity for the SONPs is dramatically different from that of natural ion channels. To achieve a better understanding of the selective ion transport in hydrophobic subnanometer channels in general and SONPs in particular, we perform a series of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the diffusivity of aqua Na+ and K+ ions in two prototype hydrophobic nanochannels: (i) an SONP with radius of 3.2 Å, and (ii) single-walled …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We have investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of A-site-ordered double-perovskitestructured oxides, AA'3B4O12 (A = Na, Ca, and La) with Mn and V at A' and B sites, respectively, using firstprinciple calculations based on the density functional theory. Our calculation results show that the antiferromagnetic phase is the ground state for all the compounds. By changing the A-site ions from Na+ to Ca2+ and then to La3+, the transfer of charge between Mn and O ions was changed from 1.56 to 1.55 and then to 1.50, and that between the …

Trap-Assisted Transport And Non-Uniform Charge Distribution In Sulphur-Rich Pbs Colloidal Quantum Dot-Based Solar Cells With Selective Contacts, Victor Malgras, Guanran Zhang, Andrew Nattestad, Tracey M. Clarke, Attila J. Mozer, Yusuke Yamauchi, Jung Ho Kim

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

This study reports evidences of dispersive transport in planar PbS colloidal quantum dots heterojunction-based devices as well as the effect of incorporating a MoO3 hole selective layer on the charge extraction behavior. Steady state and transient characterization techniques are employed to determine the complex recombination processes involved in such devices. The addition of a selective contact drastically improves the device efficiency up to 3.15 % (especially through the photocurrent and series resistance) and extends the overall charge lifetime by suppressing the main first-order recombination pathway observed in device without MoO3. The lifetime and mobility calculated for our sulphur-rich PbS-based devices …

Microstructure And Metal-Dielectric Transition Behaviour In A Percolative Al2o3-Fe Composite Via Selective Reduction, Zidong Zhang, Runhua Fan, Zhicheng Shi, Kelan Yan, Zhijia Zhang, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou Mar 2014

Microstructure And Metal-Dielectric Transition Behaviour In A Percolative Al2o3-Fe Composite Via Selective Reduction, Zidong Zhang, Runhua Fan, Zhicheng Shi, Kelan Yan, Zhijia Zhang, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

The electromagnetic (EM) medium plays a key role in many areas, such as communications, stealth technology, etc. Different EM properties are required for different applications. In this paper, we have obtained tunable EM properties in an Al2O3-Fe composite via selective reduction. By adjusting the content of one functional component, the composite shows totally different EM properties, in accordance with the predictions of effective medium theory. Hybrid EM behaviour is obtained near the percolation threshold, which has a close relationship with its microstructure.

Topological Ramsey Spaces, Associated Ultrafilters, And Their Applications To The Tukey Theory Of Ultrafilters And Dedekind Cuts Of Nonstandard Arithmetic, Timothy Onofre Trujillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation makes contributions to the areas of combinatorial set theory, the model theory of arithmetic, and the Tukey theory of ultrafilters. The main results are broken into three parts.

In the first part, we identify some new partition relations among finite trees and use them to answer an open question of Dobrinen; namely, "for n < omega, are the notions of Ramsey for Rn and selective for Rn equivalent?" We show that for each n < omega, it is consistent with ZFC that there exists a selective for Rn ultrafilter which is not Ramsey for Rn.

In the second part, we extend results of Blass concerning Dedekind cuts associated to ultrafilter mappings from p-point and weakly-Ramsey ultrafilters to ultrafilter mappings from Ramsey for R1 ultrafilters. Blass associates to each ultrafilter U on a countable set X and each function g …

Selective Withdrawal From Stratified Streams, Chia-Shun Yih, Song-Ping Zhu Jun 2013

Selective Withdrawal From Stratified Streams, Chia-Shun Yih, Song-Ping Zhu

Professor Song-Ping Zhu

Selective withdrawal from a stratified stream is considered. The average density of the withdrawn fluid and the flow pattern are found, within the limitations on the densimetric Froude number and the withdrawal rate specified in this paper, to depend on the strength and location of the sink, and very little on any slight variation in the velocity distribution far upstream and the densimetric Froude number. The upstream density distribution is assumed linear, but many other density distributions can be similarly treated.

Tunable Negative Permittivity Behavior And Conductor-Insulator Transition In Dual Composites Prepared By Selective Reduction Reaction, Zi-Dong Zhang, Run-Hua Fan, Zhi-Cheng Shi, Shi-Bing Pan, Ke-Lan Yan, Kang-Ning Sun, Jing-De Zhang, Xiang-Fa Liu, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We use a selective reduction reaction to fabricate a new kind of dual composite, which has a "composite-within-a-composite" structure. Based on the different reduction behavior of Fe2O3, an Fe-rich structure (Fe-Fe3O4-Al2O3) is formed in an Al-rich structure (FeAl2O4-Al2O3). The Fe-rich structure can bring down the concentration of free electrons to reduce the energy loss, without losing its metallic behaviour at the same time. Near the percolation threshold, a conductor-insulator transition appears and the dual composites show totally different electromagnetic responses, which can be well explained by effective medium theory. By controlling the parameters of the selective reduction process, we can …

Applications Of Voltammetric Ion Selective Electrodes To Complex Matrices, Alexander R. Harris, Jie Zhang, Robert W. Cattrall, Alan M. Bond Jan 2013

Applications Of Voltammetric Ion Selective Electrodes To Complex Matrices, Alexander R. Harris, Jie Zhang, Robert W. Cattrall, Alan M. Bond

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The practical application of two different voltammetric ion selective electrodes (VISE) to measure ion activity in complex solutions has been explored. 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) microcrystals adhered to an electrode surface act as a low selectivity voltammetric ion sensor. Resistance drop effects and pH artifacts were minimised by the addition of an "innocent" supporting electrolyte (buffer) to the analyte solution. In this format, addition of an ionophore to improve selectivity resulted in a reduction in current magnitude, due to competition for the ion. In contrast, voltammetry of a thin film containing a redox active species, electrolyte, ionophore and membrane …

Molecular Dynamics Analysis Of Apolipoprotein-D - Lipid Hydroperoxide Interactions: Mechanism For Selective Oxidation Of Met-93, Aaron J. Oakley, Surabhi Bhatia, Heath Ecroyd, Brett Garner Dec 2012

Molecular Dynamics Analysis Of Apolipoprotein-D - Lipid Hydroperoxide Interactions: Mechanism For Selective Oxidation Of Met-93, Aaron J. Oakley, Surabhi Bhatia, Heath Ecroyd, Brett Garner

Heath Ecroyd

Background: Recent studies suggest reduction of radical-propagating fatty acid hydroperoxides to inert hydroxides by interaction with apolipoprotein-D (apoD) Met93 may represent an antioxidant function for apoD. The nature and structural consequences of this selective interaction are unknown. Methodology/Principal Findings: Herein we used molecular dynamics (MD) analysis to address these issues. Longtimescale simulations of apoD suggest lipid molecules are bound flexibly, with the molecules free to explore multiple conformations in a binding site at the entrance to the classical lipocalin ligand-binding pocket. Models of 5s- 12s- and 15s hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acids were created and the lipids found to wrap around Met93 thus …

Stc-Mimo Block Spread Ofdm In Frequency Selective Rayleigh Fading Channels, Le Chung Tran, Xiaojing Huang, Eryk Dutkiewicz, Joe F. Chicharo

Dr Le Chung Tran

In this paper, we expand the idea of spreading the transmitted symbols in OFDM systems by unitary spreading matrices based on the rotated Hadamard or rotated Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) matrices proposed in the literature to apply to Space-Time Coded Multiple-Input Multiple-Output OFDM (STC-MIMO-OFDM) systems. We refer the resulting systems to as STC-MIMO Block Spread OFDM (STC-MIMO-BOFDM) systems. In the proposed systems, a multi-dimensional diversity, including time, frequency, space and modulation diversities, can be used, resulting in better bit error performance in frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels compared to the conventional OFDM systems with or without STCs. Simulations carried out …

ApoD (apolipoprotein D) is up-regulated in AD (Alzheimer's disease) and upon oxidative stress. ApoD inhibits brain lipid peroxidation in vivo, but the mechanism is unknown. Specific methionine residues may inhibit lipid peroxidation by reducing radical-propagating L-OOHs (lipid hydroperoxides) to non-reactive hydroxides via a reaction that generates MetSO (methionine sulfoxide). Since apoD has three conserved methionine residues (Met49, Met93 and Met157), we generated recombinant proteins with either one or all methionine residues replaced by alanine and assessed their capacity to reduce HpETEs (hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acids) to their HETE (hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid) derivatives. ApoD, apoDM49-A and apoDM157-A all catalysed the reduction of HpETEs to …

Speciation Of Dissolved Inorganic Arsenic By Diffusive Gradients In Thin Films: Selective Binding Of Asiii By 3-Mercaptopropyl-Functionalized Silica Gel, William W. Bennett, Peter R. Teasdale, Jarad G. Panther, David T. Welsh, Dianne F. Jolley Jan 2011

Speciation Of Dissolved Inorganic Arsenic By Diffusive Gradients In Thin Films: Selective Binding Of Asiii By 3-Mercaptopropyl-Functionalized Silica Gel, William W. Bennett, Peter R. Teasdale, Jarad G. Panther, David T. Welsh, Dianne F. Jolley

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

A diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique for selectively measuring AsIII utilizes commercially available 3-mercaptopropyl- functionalized silica gel. Deployment of the new technique alongside the Metsorb-DGT for total inorganic arsenic allows the calculation of As III directly and AsV by difference. Uptake of As III by mercapto-silica was quantitative and elution with a mixture of 1 mol L-1 HNO3 and 0.01 mol L-1 KIO 3 gave a recovery of 85.6 + 1.7%. DGT validation experiments showed linear accumulation of AsIII over time (R2 > 0.998). Accumulation was unaffected by varying ionic strength (0.0001-0.75 mol L-1 NaNO3) and pH (3.5-8.5). Deployment …

ESI mass spectrometry was used to assess the binding of 13-substituted, 5-nitro-2-phenylindolyl- and 2-naphthalenyl-based berberine derivatives to inter- and intramolecular G-quadruplex DNA molecules. In contrast with the parent berberine, the compounds showed selectivity for quadruplex over duplex DNA and stabilised the quadruplex structure. They represent a new class of quadruplex DNA-selective ligands. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Improving Object Cache Performance Through Selective Placement, Saied Hosseini-Khayat

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Distributed systems greatly benefit from caching. Caching data objects of variable size and cost poses interesting questions that have been researched for the past ten years. As a result, a few good algorithms have come to the fore. These algorithms make effective decisions in selecting cache objects for removal. However, they make no decision about the suitability of a new object for placement into the cache. We show that “selective placement” can add further improvement to these algorithms when a request pattern consists of frequent references to a working set of objects interspersed with isolated references to less popular objects. …
