Salinity And Temperature Monitoring System Data For The Lower Rappahannock River Estuary, 1972-1974, G. C. Parker, C. S. Fang

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) installed two remote monitoring stations in the lower reaches of the Rappahannock River to obtain continuous temperature and salinity measurements near the surface and the bottom. The first station was installed at the base of a concrete support of the Rappahannock River (Norris) Bridge, near the mouth of the, river (Figure 1). The second station was installed on the base of Navigation Aid Tower Number 9 just off of Smokey Point, roughly 11 nautical miles upstream from the Norris Bridge. Each station consisted of two salinity and t«~perature probes, one located 6 feet …

A Surface Circulation Study In Middle Elizabeth River, Ching Seng Fang, Christopher S . Welch, Hayden H. Gordon

Reports

A new oil refinery has been proposed to be located in Portsmouth, Virginia south of the Hampton Roads area. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science was asked by NUS Corporation to conduct a surface circulation study to assemble the characteristics of the flow near Lambert Point on the Elizabeth River (Figure 3.1).

This report includes a review of the previous work in the area, a description of the particular experiments performed, and an interpretation of the data in terms of surface circulation. Several small oil slicks were incidentally observed during the experiments and their behavior has been discussed in relation …

Reports

This report summarizes field observations and sedimentological findings made by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science while monitoring a dredging project on Hampton Bar at Hampton, Virginia (Figure 1). Monitoring was conducted at the request of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. of Newport News, Virginia, for the purpose of assessing localized effects of the dredging operation on a real time basis so that operational decisions could be made to mitigate adverse · pacts or prevent their occurrence.

Eolian Sedimentation In Coastal Areas, Victor Goldsmith Jan 1975

Eolian Sedimentation In Coastal Areas, Victor Goldsmith

Reports

The importance of eolian deposition in coastal areas is clearly demonstrated by the size and bulk of coastal sand dunes in many of these areas. The dune fields of Coos Bay, Oregon (Fig. :1), the southern end of Lake Michigan (Fig. 2) and the Cape Cod dune fields southeast of Provincetown (Fig. 3) and on Sandy Neck (Fig. 4) are just a few outstanding examples. Smaller sand dune accumulations are a:1:1 integral part of almost all depositional coasts. More subtle form of eolian deposition on beaches, marshes, intertidal sand beaches, and in shallow bays and estuaries may not be as …

Thermal Plume Entrainment Of Ichthyoplankton At The Vepco Surry Nuclear Power Station : Progress Report, October 1975, John V. Merriner, A. Deane Estes

Reports

Plume entrainment studies at Vepco Nuclear Power Plant located near Surry, Virginia were initiated in August, 1975 by the Ichthyology department of Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The program was undertaken to define the amount and kinds of fish eggs and larvae that are. present in the Cobham Bay area of the James River and become entrained by the heated effluent.

Reconnaissance Survey Of Benthic Communities Of A Potential Borrow Site Off Tangier Island, Virginia : Report To Virginia Airports Authority, Robert J. Orth, Donald F. Boesch Jan 1975

Reconnaissance Survey Of Benthic Communities Of A Potential Borrow Site Off Tangier Island, Virginia : Report To Virginia Airports Authority, Robert J. Orth, Donald F. Boesch

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science was called on to render advice and services to the Virginia Airports Authority concerning the environmental impact and design of an extension of the runway of the airport on Tangier Island, Virginia. The southern end of the present runway is now being threatened by the erosion due to the rapid retreat of the western shore of Tangier Island (Fig. 1). Extending the runway would require the stabilization of the shoreline in the vicinity of the runway and filling a tract of subaqueous bottom.

Shoreline Situation Report, Middlesex County, Virginia, Natalie J. Whitcomb, Martha A. Patton, Margaret H. Peoples, Gary L. Anderson, Carl H. Hobbs Ill

Reports

It is the objective of this report to supply an assessment, and at least a partial integration, of those important shoreland parameters and characteristics which will aid the planners and the managers of the shorelands in making the best decisions for the utilization of this limited and very valuable resource. The report gives particular attention to the problem of shore erosion and to recommendations concerning the alleviation of the impact of this problem. In addition we 'have tried to include in our assessment some of the potential uses of the shoreline, particularly with respect to recreational use, since such information …

A Hydrographical And Water Quality Study During The Construction Of Second Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Bruce J. Neilson, C. S. Fang Jan 1975

A Hydrographical And Water Quality Study During The Construction Of Second Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Bruce J. Neilson, C. S. Fang

Reports

In 1972 studies were conducted to determine the environmental impact of a third crossing of Hampton Roads, a bridge-tunnel connection designated as part of Interstate Highway 664. At the same time, construction had begun for a second bridge and tunnel to parallel the existing Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel which was to be incorporated into the Interstate system as I-64. Because this project was only in the initial stages, it was recommended that an evaluation of I-64 be made in order to make recommendations for the design of and construction methods for the I-664 bridge-tunnel. This study deals with the water quality …
