The Effects Of Security Framing, Time Pressure, And Brand Familiarity On Risky Mobile Application Downloads, Cody Parker Dec 2020

The Effects Of Security Framing, Time Pressure, And Brand Familiarity On Risky Mobile Application Downloads, Cody Parker

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The current study examined the effects of security system framing, time pressure, and brand familiarity on mobile application download behaviors, with an emphasis on risk taking. According to the Prospect Theory, people tend to engage in irrational decision making, and make qualitatively different decisions when information is framed in terms of gains and losses (i.e., the framing effect). Past research has used this framing effect to guide the design of a risk display for mobile applications (apps), with the purpose of communicating the potential risks and minimizing insecure app selections. Time pressure has been shown to influence the framing effect …

Digital Age Of Consent And Age Verification: Can They Protect Children?, Liliana Pasquale, Paola Zippo, Cliona Curley, Brian O'Neill, Marina Mongiello

Articles

Children are increasingly accessing social media content through mobile devices. Existing data protection regulations have focused on defining the digital age of consent, in order to limit collection of children’s personal data by organizations. However, children can easily bypass the mechanisms adopted by apps to verify their age, and thereby be exposed to privacy and safety threats. We conducted a study to identify how the top 10 social and communication apps among underage users apply age limits in their Terms of Use. We also assess the robustness of the mechanisms these apps put in place to verify the age of …

To The Attention Of Mobile Software Developers: Guess What, Test Your App!, Luis C. Cruz, Rui Abreu, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software testing is an important phase in the software development lifecycle because it helps in identifying bugs in a software system before it is shipped into the hand of its end users. There are numerous studies on how developers test general-purpose software applications. The idiosyncrasies of mobile software applications, however, set mobile apps apart from general-purpose systems (e.g., desktop, stand-alone applications, web services). This paper investigates working habits and challenges of mobile software developers with respect to testing. A key finding of our exhaustive study, using 1000 Android apps, demonstrates that mobile apps are still tested in a very ad …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The rapidly evolving mobile applications (apps) have brought great demand for developers to identify new features by inspecting the descriptions of similar apps and acquire missing features for their apps. Unfortunately, due to the huge number of apps, this manual process is time-consuming and unscalable. To help developers identify new features, we propose a new approach named SAFER. In this study, we first develop a tool to automatically extract features from app descriptions. Then, given an app, we leverage the topic model to identify its similar apps based on the extracted features and API names of apps. Finally, we design …

Mobile-Cloud Cross Development (Mcx), Sachin Ahuja

International Journal of Business and Technology

There is a multitude of Mobile Operating Systems (MOSs) with iOS, Android, Windows Phone and, BlackBerry leading the space. New players continue to enter the market. Without a de-facto leader in this space, it has become necessary for businesses & developers to target multiple devices & MOSs in order to establish a relevant presence within their target audience. Cross-platform Mobile Development Tools (XMTs) were born out of this need to reduce developer effort in creating mobile applications by providing “write once run anywhere” (WORA) functionality. However, most of these tools sacrifice performance, features or maintainability in order to provide WORA …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To promote energy-efficient operations in residential and office buildings, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) techniques have been proposed to infer the fine-grained power consumption and usage patterns of appliances from power-line measurement data. Fine-grained monitoring of everyday appliances (such as toasters and coffee makers) can not only promote energy-efficient building operations, but also provide unique insights into the context and activities of individuals. Current building-level NILM techniques are unable to identify the consumption characteristics of relatively low-load appliances, whereas smart-plug based solutions incur significant deployment and maintenance costs. In this paper, we investigate an intermediate architecture, where smart circuit breakers provide …

Fast Nearest Neighbor Search With Keywords, Ramu Anthati, Santosh Aditya Kokku, Tejaswini Vodapally Apr 2015

Fast Nearest Neighbor Search With Keywords, Ramu Anthati, Santosh Aditya Kokku, Tejaswini Vodapally

All Capstone Projects

Conventional spatial queries, such as range search and nearest neighbor retrieval, involve only conditions on objects’ geometric properties. Today, many modern applications call for novel forms of queries that aim to find objects satisfying both a spatial predicate, and a predicate on their associated texts. For example, instead of considering all the restaurants, a nearest neighbor query would instead ask for the restaurant that is the closest among those whose menus contain “steak, spaghetti, brandy” all at the same time. Currently the best solution to such queries is based on the IR2-tree, which, as shown in this paper, has a …

All Capstone Projects

We propose a Trustworthy Service Evaluation (TSE) system to enable users to share service reviews inservice-oriented mobile social networks (S-MSNs). Each service provider independently maintains a TSE for itself, which collects andstores users’ reviews about its services without requiring any third trusted authority. The service reviews can then be made available tointerested users in making wise service selection decisions. It identify three unique service review attacks, i.e., linkability, rejection, and modification attacks, and develop sophisticated security mechanisms for the TSE to deal with these attacks. Specifically, the basicTSE (bTSE) enables users to distributedly and cooperatively submit their reviews in an …

Mydeal: A Mobile Shopping Assistant Matching User Preferences To Promotions, Kartik Muralidharan, Swapna Gottipati, Jing Jiang, Narayan Ramasubbu, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A common problem in large urban cities is the huge number of retail options available. In response, a number of shopping assistance applications have been created for mobile phones. However, these applications mostly allow users to know where stores are or find promotions on specific items. What is missing is a system that factors in a user's shopping preferences and automatically tells them which stores are of their interest. The key challenge in this system is twofold; 1) building a matching algorithm that can combine user preferences with fairly unstructured deals and store information to generate a final rank ordered …
