Perfect (A Poem), Joseph Chaney
Perfect (A Poem), Joseph Chaney
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This sonnet-length, unrhymed syllabic poem speaks of the way the concept of perfection engages the imagination of mathematicians, an experience it compares to the mysterious, complex attraction we may feel toward a lover.
To Fall In Love With Math, Do This, Susan D'Agostino
To Fall In Love With Math, Do This, Susan D'Agostino
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
In the viral New York Times essay, “To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This,” Mandy Len Catron details an experience she and an acquaintance had as they shared responses to psychologist Arthur Aron’s thirty-six questions intended to make participants fall in love. She notes that, “we all have a narrative of ourselves that we offer up to strangers and acquaintances, but Dr. Aron’s questions make it impossible to rely on that narrative.” In this paper, we claim that we also have narratives of our relationship to mathematics that we offer up to ourselves and others. Following, we offer a …

Table Of The Sun, Christine Bettis
Table Of The Sun, Christine Bettis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
My creative thesis is a 48-page collection of poems titled Table of the Sun. Each poem is an intimate interrogation of varied ecological, romantic, and/or political disasters ranging from the Dakota Access Pipeline, cruel love, and Donald Trump. Some poems are reckonings, and others work to heal trauma, heartache, clinical illness, and supernatural afflictions like those experienced by the Tarantati of Puglia. Some are combative, it's true. Water is everywhere and it is multitudinous as an agent of destruction, cleansing, and transformation, and as a life-giver. The collection was influenced by readings, lectures, and courses I've experienced at UNLV, including …

Editorial: High-Tech Lust, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
Are you in love with your Android or Apple device? Do you have a deep affection and suffer from separation anxiety [1] when your smartphone is not within arm’s length of your bed at night?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Rossiter [1] differentiates between “brand love” and “brand liking” which is significant. When it comes to our high-tech gadgetry people are likely to be able to cope better with being separated from a partner or child than being separated from a vital piece of technology which goes with them everywhere.

Artificial Love Life Is As Real As The Real Thing, Professor S. Farsad

This article explains how an experiment by two human subjects stimulates love compared to artificial life. Professor Farsad’s experiment consisted of seven procedures from Stendhal’s work on romantic love, Love (1822). Both this article and experiment aimed to answer the question; Can artificial life feel love in romance?
