Investigation Of Human-Induced Land Use Changes Under Present And Future Climate Projections In Southern Idaho, Korri Allen Anderson
Investigation Of Human-Induced Land Use Changes Under Present And Future Climate Projections In Southern Idaho, Korri Allen Anderson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Water is the lifeblood of Idaho agricultural practices. Under future climate, water shortages may occur and better water management will need to occur under these conditions. The role of irrigation under a changing climate has not been previously investigated in the Snake River Basin. Irrigation schemes implemented in the NOAH Land Surface Model are tested within the Weather Research and Forecast Model 3.4 at 4-km resolution. The goals of this research are to investigate the effect of irrigation-induced cooling on local and regional climate in Southern Idaho, under present and future climate projections, and to diagnose irrigation-induced changes to surface …
Evaluation Of The Geothermal Potential Of The Snake River Plain, Idaho, Based On Three Exploration Holes, Thomas G. Freeman
Evaluation Of The Geothermal Potential Of The Snake River Plain, Idaho, Based On Three Exploration Holes, Thomas G. Freeman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The work in this thesis was based on analyzing water samples collected from three exploratory boreholes drilled during Project Hotspot. The water samples were analyzed for their chemical properties. The chemical properties of the water samples were used as a basis for further analysis.
Geophysical logs, mainly temperature logs, were also analyzed for this project. Temperature logs measure temperature in relation to depth within a borehole.
All the analyses were made in order to estimate the geothermal potential of the project areas. The exploratory boreholes were all drilled in different areas and each had unique characteristics. The Mountain Home borehole …

An Education On Growing Water Scarcity And The Benefits Of Domestic Greywater Recycling Systems, Patricia Cates
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
Water scarcity is becoming an ever growing concern in the world today. Fresh potable water is a natural resource which is being used more rapidly than it is being replenished. A growing global population, agriculture, and industry have placed great demands on our water resources. There is a need to help conserve our planet’s fresh water reserves. A tremendous percentage of household drinking water in the United States is currently being used to flush toilets, water yards and wash laundry or dishes. A practice termed ‘greywater recycling’ allows a person to utilize slightly used water to irrigate landscapes and flush …
Geothermal Alteration Of Basaltic Core From The Snake River Plain, Idaho, Christopher Joseph Sant
Geothermal Alteration Of Basaltic Core From The Snake River Plain, Idaho, Christopher Joseph Sant
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Snake River Plain is located in the southern part of the state of Idaho. The eastern plain, which this study focuses on, is a trail of volcanics from the Yellowstone
hotspot. Three exploratory geothermal wells were drilled on the Snake River Plain. This project studies basaltic core from the first well at Kimama, north of Burley, Idaho. The objectives of this project are to establish zones of geothermal alteration and analyze the potential for geothermal power production near the center of the Snake River Plain. Thirty samples from 1,912 m of core were sampled and analyzed. Mineral data, temperature …

U-Pb Geochronology Of Detrital Zircon In Quartzites Of The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex, Sawtooth Range, Idaho, Usa, Philip Gerard Bergeron
LSU Master's Theses
In southwest Laurentia, the Paleoproterozoic Selway terrane has been proposed to extend as basement from the Wyoming Province to the Proterozoic rifted margin of Laurentia primarily based on limited exposures. The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex (SMC), Idaho, a series of high-grade metasupracrustal rocks lies within the proposed region of the Selway terrane and may represent remnants of this terrane. Alternatively, it may represent another basement terrane of cratonic North America. To test the hypothesis that the SMC belongs to the Selway terrane, detrital zircon U/Pb ages of five quartzite samples were analyzed by LA-ICP-MS to establish age, possible provenance, and age …

Beginning in 1971 with the first plantings of wine grapes, the wine and wine grape industry in southwest Idaho have grown to become significant contributors to the state economy with an annual impact of $75 million (Bierle et al., 2008). With around 1600 acres under cultivation in 50 vineyards producing at least 24 varietals (as of 2007), wine grapes are the state's second largest fruit crop in acreage, with the majority of the crop (USDA, 2008) being produced in the western Snake River Plain of southwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon. In April, 2007, a 21,400 sq. km area in this …
Relationships Between Snake River Paleofloods, Occupational Patterns And Archaeological Preservation At Redbird Beach Archaeological Site In Lower Hells Canyon, Idaho, Tabitha Trosper
All Master's Theses
The Snake River basin drains 282,000 km2 of the northwestern U.S. and is the largest tributary to the Columbia River. Redbird Beach, an archaeological site located in the lower Hells Canyon reach of the Snake River, contains extensive vertical exposures of archaeological materials interbedded with Snake River flood sediments. Redbird Beach formed in the lee of the Redbird Creek debris fan, is composed of interfingering deposits from large floods on the Snake River and locally-derived alluvial sediments from Redbird Creek. Through stratigraphic analyses of slackwater deposits, this study compares the temporal and spatial patterns of human occupation at Redbird …

Chronostratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Mid-Cretaceous Wayan Formation Of Eastern Idaho, With A Description Of The First Oryctodromeus Specimens From Idaho, Laurel J. Krumenacker
Theses and Dissertations
The mid-Cretaceous Wayan Formation of Idaho consists of floodplain-deposited siltstones and mudstones, with subordinate fluvial sandstones and conglomerates. Deposition occurred in a tectonic foredeep at the toe of the Sevier thrust complex. Measurement of two incomplete and one complete section indicates a thickness of roughly 1,344 meters in the study area. No laterally extensive marker beds are present but the lower Wayan contains distinct chert pebble conglomerates, and the middle Wayan may contain a higher relative abundance of fluvial sandstone. Known fossil localities are limited to the lower and middle portions of the formation. The Wayan Formation, as currently defined, …
Metamorphic Rocks In The Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, Usa: A Window Into The Precambrian Basement Of Southwest Laurentia, Kyle Michael Metz
Metamorphic Rocks In The Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, Usa: A Window Into The Precambrian Basement Of Southwest Laurentia, Kyle Michael Metz
LSU Master's Theses
The western North American craton consists of a mosaic of Precambrian basement terranes that developed through episodes of microcontinent collision and magmatic arc accretion. Defining the extent and boundaries of these terranes is critical to deciphering the Precambrian development of Laurentia. The poorly exposed Selway terrane occurs between the Archean Wyoming province and the Neoproterozoic rifted margin of Laurentia. A rare exposure of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, the Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex (SMC), crops out over 33 km2 in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, USA, and potentially provides a window into the deep crust of the region. Field mapping, petrographic analyses, and …

Investigations Into Mapping Lava Flows In The Snake River Plain, Idaho, Vinita Ruth Hobson-Broko
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The origin of the Snake River plain continues to be debated, but the plume model is most popular at the current time. Some theories, such as meteorite impact, have been excluded, but the remaining theories require more scrutiny.
Various methods of examining phenomena in the Snake River Plain were employed. Unsupervised classification of Landsat ETM data indicates that spectra can be used to differentiate between flows. However, photographs of flows at Craters of the Moon National Monument show wide variations in texture and color within a single flow. Vegetation grows preferentially on the smoother pahoehoe slabs and significantly impacting the …

The Pliocene/Pleistocene Evolution Of The Western Snake River Plain Near Grand View Idaho, Meagan R. Deraps
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The Western Snake River Plain provides us with a unique opportunity to study the evolution of basaltic volcanism. In addition to studying the horizontal variation at the surface of the plain, erosion by the Snake River also allows the study of the vertical variation. With the aid of a USGS EDMAP grant we mapped the Dorsey Butte quadrangle and southern half of the Little Joe Butte quadrangle at a scale of 1 :24,000. The quadrangles are located within both the Ada and Elmore counties of southwestern Idaho, approximately 30 km west of Mountain Home and 2 km north of Grand …

Evolving Regional Frameworks for Ag-to-Urban Water Transfers (December 11)
The permanent transfer of water from agricultural users to municipalities has become a common feature of water management in several western states. In many cases, these voluntary market‐based transfers provide significant benefits to both the buyers and sellers, but many third parties—including remaining irrigators, rural businesses and communities dependent upon agricultural economies—have been negatively impacted. While some impacts of these so‐called “buy and dry” transfers are largely unavoidable, many can be lessened by temporary arrangements that only shift water to cities in years when municipal supplies are inadequate, such as drought and post‐drought storage recovery, and by consolidating individual farm‐to‐city …

Uplift and exposure of the Bannock detachment system and the synextensionalbasin fi ll deposits of the Salt Lake Formation provide a unique exposure of the threedimensionalgeometries of a low-angle normal fault system and the stratal architectureof the overlying supradetachment basin. Within this system, structural andstratigraphic analyses, outcrop patterns, tephra geochronology, and geological crosssections document several important relationships: (1) the Bannock detachment systemdeveloped above the Sevier-age Cache-Pocatello culmination and resembles theSevier Desert detachment in its geometry, structural setting, and kinematic evolution;(2) the Bannock detachment system initiated and slipped at low angles; (3) fl aton-fl at, ramp-fl at, and lateral ramp geometries, …
