The Ankara volcanics comprise a small volcanic field immediately to the north of Ankara, Turkey. This volcanic field is composed of a mixture of flows, tuffs, and agglomerates, with the flows ranging in composition from high-K basaltic andesite to rhyolite. Dacitic flows are the most common. A potassium-argon date gives a Middle Eocene age of 42.0 ± 1.6 m.y. The volcanics unconformably overlie Paleozoic sediments of the "Cimmerian continent" to the south and Mesozoic rocks of the Ankara melange to the north.

Carbonate Bodies Within The Basal Swift Formation (Jurassic) Of Northwestern North Dakota, Tina M. Langtry

The carbonate bodies of the basal Swift Formation (Upper Jurassic) occur as anomalous deflections on a relatively uniform mechanical well log section. The areal distribution, stratigraphic relationships, and genesis of the carbonate bodies were determined by using the gamma ray log, the spontaneous-potential log, the resistivity log suite, and megascopic and microscopic core analysis.
The carbonate bodies of the basal Swift Formation are coarsening upward sequences composed of predominantly sand-sized, recrystallized mollusk grains. These grains were transported by strong bottom cur rents across the irregular sea floor of the shallow epicontinental Jurassic sea, and were deposited under agitated water conditions …

Paleocene Coal-Bearing Sediments Of The Williston Basin, North Dakota : An Interaction Between Fluvial Systems And An Intracratonic Basin, Laramie M. Winczewski

Outcrop and test hole data for 225 sites in a 33,700-km2 area of southwestern North Dakota were examined. Seven sedimentation intervals were identified for the Paleocene Bullion Creek and Sentinel Butte Formations. The intervals extend from the top of the Harmon coal (lower Bullion Creek) to the top of the Twin Buttes coal (upper Sentinel Butte). Each interval consists of medium and fine elastics underlying a persistent lignite coal, or some other lithology at the stratigraphic position of the coal. Clastics are finer-grained upwards within intervals and within both formations to the upper Sentinel Butte.

U/Pb isotopic studies of zircons, many containing xenocrystic cores with euhedral overgrowths, and monazite from igneous rocks and metasedimentary inclusions of the northeastern Idaho batholith yield linear arrays on concordia diagrams. We interpret these as mixing lines between an old component (cores) and a young component (overgrowths and zircons without cores). The lower intercept of such arrays with concordia may yield the minimum age of the rocks if the overgrowths and zircons without cores are discordant, or the crystallization age if they are concordant. Monazites yield apparently concordant ages either equal or less than the lower intercept zircon ages. The …

Lava flows of Tertiary-Quaternary age occur in Enoch Valley, Upper Valley, and Slug Valley in southeastern Idaho. The basalts in Upper Valley and Enoch Valley contain olivine (Fo69 to Fo37), plagioclase (An62 to An39), augite and Fe-Ti oxides. The lava in Slug Valley lacks plagioclase, but contains sanidine (Or70 to Or56) with a trace of biotite and amphibole, and thus, has been termed alkali trachyte.

This may be strange for a geologist to say, but it is very similar to the profession of law in that any set of data may be and is usually interpreted differently by individual lawyers. We geologist start with some known facts (sometime geological), make assumptions, and then intrepret into the unknown. It is this interpretation that separates a successful geologist from a geologist. A successful oil finding geologist is a geologist that has developed this interpretation of geological facts into an art. …

Red Point quadrangle, in Emery County in central Utah, was mapped in 1979 as a part of the U.S. Geological Survey's progress to evaluate lands in the public domain for potential coal leasing. Mapping was done using U.S. Forest Service color aerial photographs at a scale of 1:15,640 and U.S. Geological Survey black-and-white aerial photographs at a scale of 1:30,000. The quadrangle was mapped previously by Spicker (1931) at a scale of 1:62,500.

The stratigraphy, structure, and depositional environments of the Naborton, Do let Hills, and part of the Cow Bayou Formations (Wilcox Group, Paleocene) at the Oxbow Mine site, Red River, De Soto, and Natchitoches Parishes,. Louisiana, were evaluated from a study of four continuous cores and 466 geophysical logs.
Overlying 40 feet {12 m) of silty Porters Creek shale is the Naborton Formation composed of 130-195 feet (40-59 m) of sand, silt, clay, and lignite. There are three lignites in this formation and their average total thickness is 13.5 feet (4. l m), or about 10% of the formation thickness. The …

The Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene) near Lost Bridge, Dunn County, west-central North Dakota, is 190 meters thick, and is charac terized by four main lithologies: sand, silt, clay, and lignite. The study interval is ISO meters thick, and lies between the basal sand of the formation and the Bullion Butte lignite bed, neither of which are exposed in the immediate study area. Sand, gray to yellow, makes up about 3S% of the interval studied. It occurs in tabular beds 2-18 meters thick. It is fine to very-fine, angular, and composed largely of quartz, feldspar, rock fragments, with minor amounts of …

Recent awareness of the finite nature of fossil-fuel resources has resulted in an increased interest in alternate sources of energy such as geothermal. To evaluate the geothermal energy potential of the hot-springs system near Midway, Wasatch Co., Utah, consideration was given to heat flow, water chemistry, and structural controls.
Abnormal heat flow was indicated qualitatively by snow-melt patterns and quantitatively by heat-flow measurements that were obtained from two of four temperature-gradient wells drilled in the area. These measurements indicated that the area north of the town of Midway is characterized by heat flow equal to 321.75 mW/m2, which …

A 5,000 ft (1,538 m) pre-Mt. Simon (Upper Cambrian) red-bed sequence, encountered in the Gratiot County deep borehole (Sparks et al. #1-8) and herein na~ed the North Star Formation, consists of undeformed recurring beds of immature arkosic sandstone 2 to 34 in. (5 to 85 cm) thick. These beds grade upward from erosional basal contacts into mudstone units 1 in to 12 ft (3 cm to 3.8.m) thick. Within the sandstones, grading, horizontal lamination, and crossstratification define Bouma intervals "a", "b", and "c", which combine to form incomplete Bouma sequences. The White Rock quadrangle is located in extreme west central North Carolina, at the northwest edge of the Blue Ridge thrust sheet. The geology of the north-central ninth of the quadrangle was mapped during this study. This map area primarily consists of Precambrian granitic gneisses of the Blue Ridge thrust sheet that are separated from metasedimentary rocks of the Wilhite Formation of the Ocoee Series by the Devils Fork fault.
Of the six metadiabase bodies mapped by Keith (1904) in the White Rock quadrangle, only three definitely contain outcrops of metadiabase. These bodies were metamorphosed to the chlorite and biotite …

Hydrothermal alteration in drill cuttings from Thermal Power drillhole 14-2, Roosevelt Hot Springs Thermal area, has been studied petrographically. The hole is sited in alluvium approximately 1.6 km southeast of the old Resort and was rotary drilled to a depth of 1866.0 m. The exact hole location is 2310 FNL, 350 FWL, Sec. 2, Twp 27S, Rge 9W, elevation 1908.5 m. Core was extracted from 792.5 to 795.5 m. The upper member of the upper Precambrian Mount Rogers Formation of southwestern Virginia includes thick units of massive conglomeratic mudstone Interpreted as tillite (Rankin, 1970; Blondeau and Lowe, 1972; Blondeau, 1975; Schwab, 1976). The tillite is composed of unsorted angular plutonic, metamorphic, volcanic, and sedimentary rock fragments enclosed within a matrix of sandy hematitic mudstone. The tillite is interbedded with arkosic sandstone, argillite, and conglomerate. Sedimentary structures and textures of these units suggest deposition by glaciers which protruded from land into a standing body of water as floating ice. A suite of silicic volcanic rocks is associated with the Roosevelt Hot Springs geothermal area in southwestern Utah. The volcanic sequence includes Tertiary rhyolite 8 m.y. old and obsidian, ash and rhyolite of Quaternary age. The Quaternary lavas are characterized by high silica content (76.5% SiO2) and total alkalies in excess of 9 percent. Obsidians commonly contain greater amounts of flourine than water. Two older flows (0.8 m.y.) can be distinguished from younger dome and pyroclastic material (approximately 0.5 m.y.) by subtle differences in their chemistry. The mineralogy of the rhyolites consists of alkali feldspar, plagioclase, and small amounts of …

"The biostratigraphy, paleoecology and paleontology of the Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation in Missouri is reinvestigated in an attempt to solve problems that have arisen since the classic earlier studies by Ulrich, Bridge and others. Twelve faunal zones are established, many based on primitive mollusks which dominate the formation. The oldest of these, in the Van Buren Member, is the Hypseloaonus Zone. This is followed by a zone characterized by the primitive cephalopod Dakeoaeras then a zone dominated by the gastropod Sinuopea. These zones are succeeded by the Euomphalopsis, Matthevia and Ozarkina Zones which lie stratigraphically below the Cryptozoon Zone, …

The late Mississippian Great Blue Limestone was studied at four locations around Cache Valley, Utah. One location was at Dry Lake in the Pisgah Hills to the west of Cache Valley. Three locations were in the Bear River Range to the east of Cache Valley. From north to south the locations are: 1) Beirdneau Peak, 2) Logan Peak, and 3) the ridge to the north of East Fork Canyon. The area of southern Elkhorn Mountain, a previously unmapped area, is located north of Malad City, Idaho, in the Bannock Range. The mapped area is within the Basin and Range province. The mapped area measures 5.9 miles in the north-south direction and approximately 8.8 miles in the east-west direction.
The oldest stratigraphic unit, in the mapped area, is the Ute Formation of Middle Cambrian age. Other units of Cambrian age, in ascending order, are: Blacksmith Formation, Bloomington Formation, Nounan Formation, and St. Charles Formation. The units of Ordovician age are the Garden City and the Swan Peak Formations. The youngest …

"Thirty-three measured sections, nine with thin sections and insoluble residues, were studied to determine the depositional history of the Allan Mountain Limestone and the lower member of the Castle Reef Dolomite of the Madison Group in northwestern Montana.
The Allan Mountain base is a fossiliferous limestone, herein named the Brownback Gulch Member, which thickens and becomes cherty to the southwest where the section at Lone Butte resembles that of the Bridger Range Waulsortian-type reefs. A crinoidal lag deposit marks a dis- conformity at the top. In the overlying silty limestone member a thin black shale (Unit 1) grades into normal …

The area, covered by this report, includes about 108 square miles in the northeastern part of the Wasatch Plateau in central Utah. Clear Creek, Utah, is near the center of the area.
Stratigraphy of the area is characterized by 18,000 to 20,000 feet of sedimentary rocks above the Precambrian basement. The oldest exposed stratigraphic unit is the 11ancos Formation of late Cretaceous age; the youngest exposed stratigraphic unit is the North Horn Formation of Cretaceous-Tertiary age. The sedimentary rocks are mainly sandstone, shale, and coal. Sandstone and shale are the most abundant.

The northern part of the mapped area is located in the Basin and Range province and the southern part of the mapped area is located in the Middle Rocky Mountain province. The north-south and east-west dimensions of the mapped area are 11.1 miles and 5.1 miles, respectively.

The Johnnie district, in the northwestern Spring Mountains, Nye County, Nevada, may have produced a little under 100,000 troy oz of gold, since the discovery of the district in 1890.
An approximately 13,000-ft-thick (4,000 m) section of east-dipping upper Precambrian through Middle Cambrian miogeosynclinal clastic and carbonate rocks is exposed in the district. The strata are, in order of decreasing age, the Johnnie Formation, Stirling Quartzite, Wood Canyon Formation, Zabriskie Quartzite, and Carrara and Bonanza King Formations. Geologic mapping in the Zacapa quadrangle and southern Rio Hondo quadrangle has shown that the Las Ovejas Complex, of probable pre-Early Pennsylvanian age and the oldest rock south of the Motagua fault zone, is a sequence of interlayered schist, marble, amphibolite, gneiss and associated penetratively deformed diorite, tonalite and granodiorite. Metavolcanic, metavolcaniclastic, and metasedimentary rock includes original basalt, dacitic and rhyodacitic tuff, minor andesite, limestone and pelite. Emplacement of diorite coincided with regional prograde metamorphism to middle and upper amphibolite facies. Hornblende, diopside, staurolite, sillimanite, and K-feldspar formed in rock of appropriate bulk composition. In the Zacapa quadrangle, metamorphic grade …

The mapped area, in north-central Utah, is located west of Clarkston, Utah. It includes the southern part of Clarkston Mountain and part of the Junction Hills, which extend southward from Clarkston Mountain. The area is represented on the southeastern part of the Portage quadrangle, Utah-Idaho, and the southwestern part of the Clarkston quadrangle, Utah-Idaho. It measures about 8.3 miles in the east-west direction and 4.0 miles in the north-south direction.
The southern part of Clarkston Mountain consists of stratigraphic units that range in age from Cambrian to Silurian. The Nounan Formation of Cambrian age is the oldest. The St. Charles …
