A Hybrid Approach To Estuary Modelling, O. Gould, J. Hinwood, Errol J. Mclean Jan 2009

A Hybrid Approach To Estuary Modelling, O. Gould, J. Hinwood, Errol J. Mclean

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

A hybrid model incorporating process and system modelling characteristics has been developed and applied to the evolution of a theoretical estuary with a small lake basin, partially enclosed by a barrier with an entrance open to the sea. The one-dimensional model is capable of modelling changes in sedimentation both spatially and temporally and hence, tracks changes in crosssection dimensions along the estuary. The model structure is a series of linked modules to solve the hydrodynamics, the sediment transport equation and a distribution of the sediment to bed and bank. An evolution simulation was conducted for a generic coastal lagoon over …

Spectroscopic Study Of The Benchmark Mn+-H2 Complex, Viktoras Dryza, Berwyck L. J Poad, Evan J. Bieske

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We have recorded the rotationally resolved infrared spectrum of the weakly bound Mn+-H2 complex in the H-H stretch region (4022-4078 cm(-1)) by monitoring Mn+ photodissociation products. The band center of Mn+-H2, the H-H stretch transition, is shifted by -111.8 cm(-1) from the transition of the free H2 molecule. The spectroscopic data suggest that the Mn+-H2 complex consists of a slightly perturbed H2 molecule attached to the Mn+ ion in a T-shaped configuration with a vibrationally averaged intermolecular separation of 2.73 A. Together with the measured Mn+...H2 binding energy of 7.9 kJ/mol (Weis, P.; et al. J. Phys. Chem. A 1997, …

Infrared Spectra Of Mass-Selected Mg+-H2 And Mg +-D2 Complexes, Viktoras Dryza, Berwyck L. Poad, Evan J. Bieske

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Rotationally resolved infrared spectra of Mg(+)-H(2) and Mg(+)-D(2) are recorded in the H-H (4025-4080 cm(-1)) and D-D (2895-2945 cm(-1)) stretch regions by monitoring Mg(+) photofragments. The nu(HH) and nu(DD) transitions of Mg(+)-H(2) and Mg(+)-D(2) are red-shifted by 106.2 +/- 1.5 and 76.0 +/- 0.1 cm(-1) respectively from the fundamental vibrational transitions of the free H(2) and D(2) molecules. The spectra are consistent with a T-shaped equilibrium structure in which the Mg(+) ion interacts with a slightly perturbed H(2) or D(2) molecule. From the spectroscopic constants, a vibrationally averaged intermolecular separation of 2.716 A (2.687 A) is deduced for the ground …

Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 316 Sites C0006 and C0007 examined the deformation front of the Nankai accretionary prism offshore the Kii Peninsula, Japan. In the drilling area, the frontal thrust shows unusual behavior as compared to other regions of the Nankai Trough. Drilling results, integrated with observations from seismic reflection profiles, suggest that the frontal thrust has been active since similar to 0.78-0.436 Ma and accommodated similar to 13 to 34% of the estimated plate convergence during that time. The remainder has likely been distributed among out-of-sequence thrusts further landward and/or accommodated through diffuse shortening. Unlike results of …

Using Lidar To Assess The Effect Of Fire And Floods On Upland Peat Bogs, Waterfall Gully, Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia, Javier Leon Patino, Solomon Buckman, Robert P. Bourman, Rowena Morris, Katherine C. Brownlie

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

A flood exceeding the 100 year average recurrence interval in November 2005 led to the failure of an upland peat bog in Waterfall Gully. The area is prone to severe bushfire and flood events and the control dam at the base of First Falls was filled with sediment sourced from Wilson Bog. A resistant quartzite bar at Fourth Falls has formed a natural constriction point against which burnt logs and debris have collected following previous fire events forming a natural dam resulting in sediment/peat accumulation upstream. The failure of the bog was inevitable as the vegetative material in the log-jam …

Emsian (Early Devonian) Tetracorals (Cnidaria) From Grattai Creek, New South Wales, Anthony J. Wright

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The tetracoral species Phillipsastrea scotti sp. nov. and Trapezophyllum grattaiensis sp. nov. are described from strata assigned to the middle Emsian (nothoperbonus to inversus conodont zones: Early Devonian) part of the Cunningham Formation at Grattai Creek, west of Mudgee, N.S.W. For comparison with the former, Phillipsastrea oculoides, from the Early Devonian (late Pragian or early Emsian) Garra Formation in the Wellington area of N.S.W., is revised on the basis of the type material; new longitudinal thin sections show indisputable horseshoe dissepiments and trabecular fans in this species.

Soil redistribution studies are important, especially in water supply catchments, because the rate at which denudation is occurring has implications for offsite water quality. However, the extent to which soil is redistributed within the landscape can be difficult to determine. This challenge can be overcome using fallout caesium-137 (137Cs). This paper describes the rates of soil loss and remobilisation in two sub-catchments within the Sydney Basin region, namely Kembla and Kentish Creeks, which drain to the Cordeaux reservoir. The total inventories of 137Cs in catchment soils were determined, a 137Cs-regression equation and a theoretical diffusion and migration …

Structural properties of the B+−H2 electrostatic complex are investigated through its rotationally resolved infrared spectrum in the H−H stretch region (3905−3975 cm−1). The spectrum, which was obtained by monitoring B+ photofragments while the IR wavelength was scanned, is consistent with the complex having a T-shaped structure and a vibrationally averaged intermolecular separation of 2.26 Å, which decreases by 0.04 Å when the H2 subunit is vibrationally excited. The H−H stretch transition of B+−H2 is red-shifted by 220.6 ± 1.5 cm−1 from that of the free H2 molecule, much …

Removal Of Structurally Different Dyes In Submerged Membrane Fungi Reactor—Biosorption/Pac-Adsorption, Membrane Retention And Biodegradation, Faisal I. Hai, Kazuo Yamamoto, Fumiyuki Nakajima, Kensuke Fukushi

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The long-term performance of a submerged membrane fungi reactor was observed while a synthetic textile wastewater containing either or both of the two structurally different azo dyes was continuously fed. Compared to the Acid Orange II dye (simpler structure), higher biosorption but slower biodegradation of the polymeric dye (Poly S119) was observed in sterile batch tests. In the membrane bioreactor (MBR), although a relative abundance of fungi (66%) without any specific control of bacterial contamination could be maintained, unlike in pure fungus culture, enzymatic activity was below detection limit. Nevertheless, >99% removal of Poly S119 was consistently achieved under a …

Approaches To Development Of A User-Friendly Community Based Arsenic/Iron Removal Unit In Bangladesh, Khondoker Mahabub Hassan, Farooque Ahmed, Faisal Ibney Hai, Saleh Faraj Magram

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The present stydy focuses on the strategies to modify the design of a community based Arsenic - Iron Removal Unit (AIRU) based on the field performance of the AIRU and the feedback from the users. The ultimate aim was to offer a user-friendly and sustainable system. Appropriate modifications in the design of the developed unit reduced the propensities of water head-loss and media clogging, thereby yielding sustained flow rate. Introduction of a simple cleaning procerdure (98% flow-recovery with three successive backwashing sequences) successfully reduced the frequency of requirement of labor-intensive replacement of the whole filter media. Raw water with arsenic …

The structure of a malonate-bound form of the glycerophosphodiesterase from Enterobacter aerogenes, GpdQ, has been refined at a resolution of 2.2 A ̊ to a final R factor of 17.1%. The structure was originally solved to 2.9 A ̊ resolution using SAD phases from Zn2+ metal ions introduced into the active site of the apoenzyme [Jackson et al. (2007), J. Mol. Biol. 367, 1047–1062]. However, the 2.9 A ̊ resolution was insufficient to discern significant details of the architecture of the binuclear metal centre that constitutes the active site. Furthermore, kinetic analysis revealed that the enzyme lost a significant amount …

The 200 km wide, east-west trending Paleoproterozoic mobile belt of the Ammassalik region of South-East Greenland contains a diverse assemblage of Paleoproterozoic and Archean rocks, variably affected by Paleoproterozoic deformations and high-grade low or high pressure metamorphism. By using previous field and geochemical data combined with new zircon dating and zircon trace element geochemistry, this mobile belt is confirmed as a 1870 to 1840 Ma collisional orogen, which contains one or more 1900 to 1880 Ma magmatic suites and northern and southern Archean basement terranes. The most studied 1900 to 1880 Ma magmatic suite is the Ammassalik Intrusive Complex, which …

Diagenesis is now recognized as a potentially major source of error in paleoclimatic reconstructions from fossil and modern coral geochemical records. Key to avoiding spurious results caused by diagenesis is thorough screening of coral material prior to geochemical analysis. In this data brief we present color images from thin sections of fossil and modern Porites corals and demonstrate the effectiveness of thin sections in detecting low levels of diagenesis. The images presented here cover a range of coral preservation levels from pristine aragonite to 100% calcite. We particularly focus on samples containing around 1% diagenetic material, a level known to …

New results of CO global total column measurements using the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) aboard the Aqua satellite in comparison with Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) sensor aboard the Terra satellite are presented. Both data sets are validated using ground-based total column measurements in Russia and Australia. A quality parameter based on the Profile Percent A Priori values from the standard MOPITT product is introduced. AIRS data (version 4) for biomass burning events are in agreement or lower than both MOPITT and ground measurements, but CO bursts can be seen by AIRS in most cases. For the cases …

Hydrogen chloride (HCl) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) are respectively the main chlorine and fluorine reservoirs in the Earth's stratosphere. Their buildup resulted from the intensive use of man-made halogenated source gases, in particular CFC-11 (CCl3F) and CFC-12 (CCl2F2), during the second half of the 20th century. It is important to continue monitoring the evolution of these source gases and reservoirs, in support of the Montreal Protocol and also indirectly of the Kyoto Protocol. The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) is a space-based instrument that has been performing regular solar occultation measurements of …

Nearshore Wave Environments Around A Sandy Cay On A Platform Reef, Torres Strait, Australia, Colin D. Woodroffe, Bongkoch Samosorn

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Waves are the primary factor affecting reef-island morphology. This study examines spatial and temporal variations of wave characteristics in the nearshore around Warraber Island, a sandy cay on a platform reef in Torres Strait Australia, based on field measurements during the predominant southeasterly wind season. Water pressure was recorded simultaneously, and transformed to water surface wave spectra, at a location close to the reef edge and across the nearshore at different locations around the island. Wave environments off the reef were estimated based on wave characteristics measured at the reef-edge location and found to be primarily dominated by sea. Low …

Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and their δ13C and δ15N values were determined from 110 sediment samples from the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) continental shelf, northern Andaman Sea to decipher the concentration and source of organic matter. Comparatively higher TOC and TN concentrations are found in the inner-shelf mud belt, and on the continental slope sediments, whereas the outer-shelf sediments, composed mostly of relict sands, are low in TOC. The TOC contents are positively correlated with the abundance of fine-grained sediments. The TOC:TN ratios and δ13C and δ15N values show low variability …

Long-term investigations carried out in a submerged membrane fungi reactor treating textile wastewater revealed the excellent fouling prevention capacity of spacer-filled hollow-fiber modules. The type and arrangement of the spacers governed the overall rigidity of the modules and played the critical role in avoidance of sludge intrusion and retrieval of the original state (cleaning). A hybrid module (fiber packing density = 61.5%, surface area = 1.07 m2) obtained by winding a rigid spacer (thickness = 1 mm, opening = 7 mm × 7 mm) on the surface of a module originally containing a flexible thin spacer (opening = 1 mm …

We report the first atmospheric column measurements of methanol made by ground-based solar Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The measurements were made through smoke plumes over South Eastern Australia during the Austral summers of 2001/2002 and 2002/2003. There is a strong correlation between the measured column amounts of methanol and simultaneous and co-located measurements of aerosol optical depth. An emission factor for methanol from Australian forest fires of 2.3 ± 0.8 grams per kilogram of dry fuel consumed is estimated by use of the correlations of methanol and carbon monoxide with aerosol optical depth and literature values for the emission factor …

Nitric acid (HNO3) is one of the key products that are operationally retrieved by the European Space Agency (ESA) from the emission spectra measured by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) onboard ENVISAT. The product version 4.61/4.62 for the observation period between July 2002 and March 2004 is validated by comparisons with a number of independent observations from ground-based stations, aircraft/balloon campaigns, and satellites. Individual HNO3 profiles of the ESA MIPAS level-2 product show good agreement with those of MIPAS-B and MIPAS-STR (the balloon and aircraft version of MIPAS, respectively), and the balloon-borne infrared spectrometers MkIV and SPIRALE, …

Altitude profiles of ClONO2 retrieved with the IMK (Institut fur Meteorologie und Klimaforschung) science-oriented data processor from MIPAS/Envisat (Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding on Envisat) mid-infrared limb emission measurements between July 2002 and March 2004 have been validated by comparison with balloon-borne (Mark IV, FIRS2, MIPASB), airborne (MIPAS-STR), ground-based (Spitsbergen, Thule, Kiruna, Harestua, Jungfraujoch, Izana, Wollongong, Lauder), and spaceborne (ACE-FTS) observations. With few exceptions we found very good agreement between these instruments and MIPAS with no evidence for any bias in most cases and altitude regions. For balloon-borne measurements typical absolute mean differences are below 0.05 ppbv over the …

It is well-understood that reductions in air quality play a significant role in both environmental and human health. Interactions between ozone depletion and global climate change will significantly alter atmospheric chemistry which, in turn, will cause changes in concentrations of natural and human-made gasses and aerosols. Models predict that tropospheric ozone near the surface will increase globally by up to 10 to 30 ppbv (33 to 100% increase) during the period 2000 to 2100. With the increase in the amount of the stratospheric ozone, increased transport from the stratosphere to the troposphere will result in different responses in polluted and …
