Effects Of Land Use On Riparian Corridors In Sonoma County, Marina Davies
Effects Of Land Use On Riparian Corridors In Sonoma County, Marina Davies
Master's Projects and Capstones
Riparian corridor protection through zoning ordinances is a common best management practice to protect riparian ecosystems and function. These zoning ordinances protect riparian ecosystems by establishing setback distances where land use activities are prohibited. While management of protected riparian corridors are widely studied, recommendations for riparian corridor width vary and are often site specific. The variability of corridor widths presents a challenge to riparian corridor implementation, in addition to balancing economic needs with natural resource protection. This study evaluates the effects of land use on riparian corridors and compares the Riparian Corridor Combining Zone ordinance in Sonoma County to other …

The Impact Of Terrain And Other Factors On Wild Fires, Matthew L. Kingston
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Abstract - Wild fires have become an annual concern in the United States, and despite the vast amount of resources and manpower used to combat the spread of wild fires, the success rate tends to vary. With this in mind, a research project has commenced which is primarily aimed at discovering the relationship between environmental factors and wild fire growth, or lack of growth. This research analyzes data available in the Google Earth Engine and includes geographical features such as roads, elevation, and other factors like humidity and wind. Using Google Earth Engine programs, the goal is to establish meaningful …
Compiler Optimization Effects On Register Collisions, Jonathan S. Tan
Compiler Optimization Effects On Register Collisions, Jonathan S. Tan
Master's Theses
We often want a compiler to generate executable code that runs as fast as possible. One consideration toward this goal is to keep values in fast registers to limit the number of slower memory accesses that occur. When there are not enough physical registers available for use, values are ``spilled'' to the runtime stack. The need for spills is discovered during register allocation wherein values in use are mapped to physical registers. One factor in the efficacy of register allocation is the number of values in use at one time (register collisions). Register collision is affected by compiler optimizations that …

One of the primary concerns for those spending time in low gravity and high radiation environments is muscle atrophy. A major cause of muscular atrophy is oxidative stress which is amplified by increased levels of ionizing radiation during spaceflight. Additionally, high levels of radiation can damage DNA, increasing the risk of cancer. Utah State University’s Space Environment Test Facility was used to irradiate C2C12 myoblasts and human vascular endothelial cells with a beta-radiation dosage mimicking that on the International Space Station and a 3-year deep space mission.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers
Electrolytes, which are a key component in electrochemical devices, transport ions between the sulfur/carbon composite cathode and the lithium anode in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). The performance of a LSB mostly depends on the electrolyte due to the dissolution of polysulfides into the electrolyte, along with the formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase. The selection of the electrolyte and its functionality during charging and discharging is intricate and involves multiple reactions and processes. The selection of the proper electrolyte, including solvents and salts, for LSBs strongly depends on its physical and chemical properties, which is heavily controlled by its molecular structure. In …
Examining The Effects Of Transport Policy On Modal Shift From Private Car To Public Bus, Ahm Mehbub Anwar, Jie Yang
Examining The Effects Of Transport Policy On Modal Shift From Private Car To Public Bus, Ahm Mehbub Anwar, Jie Yang
SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers
Private vehicles have become the most common mode of daily travel. This is one effect of the poor accessibility of public transportation. This paper attempts to use a study based on a survey of commuters in order to devise ways of encouraging the use of public transportation. Two different public transport policies were examined: (i) once-an-hour direct bus service from home to university (policy 1), and (ii) park-and-ride facilities (policy 2). Binary logistics models are proposed with the intention of comparing the utility of travel modes between private cars and public buses. These models are also used to identify the …
Probing Symmetry And Disorder Effects In The Fractional Quantum Hall States Of The Second Landau Level, Ethan I. Kleinbaum
Probing Symmetry And Disorder Effects In The Fractional Quantum Hall States Of The Second Landau Level, Ethan I. Kleinbaum
Open Access Dissertations
Electrons confined to two dimensions, cooled to cryogenic temperatures, and placed in a strong perpendicular magnetic field exhibit a set of ground states referred to as the fractional quantum Hall states (FQHS). The FQHSs forming in the region called the second Landau level are some of the most exciting states as several theories predict that they are very different from the well understood FQHS in the lowest Landau level. Nonetheless, the nature of these FQHSs continue to evade understanding. In this thesis, a unique ultra-low temperature setup is used to examine the FQHSs of the second Landau level in regimes …

Electric-Field Effects On The Closed Orbits Of The Diamagnetic Kepler Problem, Colin Bleasdale, A Bruno-Alfonso, Roger A. Lewis
Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers
The nonrelativistic closed orbits of an electron interacting with a unit positive charge in the presence of homogeneous magnetic and electric fields are investigated. A simplified theoretical model is proposed utilizing appropriate initial conditions in semiparabolic coordinates for arbitrary magnetic-and electric-field alignments. The evolution of both the angular spectrum of orbits and the shape and duration of individual orbits, as the electric-field intensity and scaled energy are increased, is shown for the cases of both parallel and crossed fields. Orbit mixing in the high-field regime is investigated in the case of parallel fields, giving an indication of the system moving …

Long-Term Midlatitude Mesopause Region Temperature Trend Deduced From Quarter Century (1990-2014) Na Lidar Observations, Chiao Y. She, D. A. Krueger, Tao Yuan
All Physics Faculty Publications
The long-term midlatitude temperature trend between 85 and 105 km is deduced from 25 years (March 1990-December 2014) of Na Lidar observations. With a strong warming episode in the 1990s, the time series was least-square fitted to an 11-parameter nonlinear function. This yields a cooling trend starting from an insignificant value of 0.64 ± 0.99 K decade-1 at 85 km, increasing to a maximum of 2.8 ± 0.58K decade-1 between 91 and 93 km, and then decreasing to a warming trend above 103 km. The geographic altitude dependence of the trend is in general agreement with model predictions. …

Introduction: The normal process of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) is subverted by carcinoma cells to facilitate metastatic spread. Cancer cells rarely undergo a full conversion to the mesenchymal phenotype, and instead adopt positions along the epithelial-mesenchymal axis, a propensity we refer to as epithelial mesenchymal plasticity (EMP). EMP is associated with increased risk of metastasis in breast cancer and consequent poor prognosis. Drivers towards the mesenchymal state in malignant cells include growth factor stimulation or exposure to hypoxic conditions.
Methods: We have examined EMP in two cell line models of breast cancer: the PMC42 system (PMC42-ET and PMC42-LA …

This research presents a useful electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique for electrode fabrication from an aqueous colloidal solution of graphene to produce graphene electrodes by the deposition of graphene on to indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass. Resultant graphene electrodes are composited with conducting polymer (PEDOT), and platinum nanoparticles, to investigate their synergistic effects. Firstly, PEDOT is composited with graphene by electropolymerization on to the graphene layer. The graphene/PEDOT electrodes demonstrate an improvement in electrochemical response in tetrabutylammonium perchlorate/ acetonitrile solution. Secondly, graphene electrodes are composited with platinum by EPD of platinum nanoparticles on to the graphene layer. The resultant graphene/platinum electrodes …

Exchange bias effects were studied in the simple perovskite NdMnO 3. Nd 3+ ordering is induced by the Mn 3+ ferromagnetic component, and they are antiferromagnetically coupled with each other. At 30 K, both negative and positive exchange bias effects are found, which are dependent on the cooling field. The exchange bias fields are around -2400 Oe and 1800 Oe, respectively. Positive and negative exchange bias effects were also observed at 8 K, but the exchange bias fields are only 130 Oe and -120 Oe. The coupling intensity between Nd 3+ ordering and Mn 3+ ordering, and their initial states …
The Effect Of Azo Textile Dyes On Gross Primary Production And Community Respiration In An Artificial Environment, Theresa L. Petzoldt
The Effect Of Azo Textile Dyes On Gross Primary Production And Community Respiration In An Artificial Environment, Theresa L. Petzoldt
Honors Theses
Azo dyes are the largest category of textile dyes in production today, with over 100,000 tons of dye produced yearly in the United States. Ten to fifty percent of this dye is not fixed to the fabric during the textile production process, and is therefore discarded as effluent. Because dye waste is difficult to process in wastewater treatment facilities, it is important to understand how this waste affects aquatic systems using a whole ecosystem approach. This study used an artificial stream to model the effects of four azo dyes on benthic biofilm production and respiration. Dyes were found to have …

Epitaxial silicene, which is one single layer of silicon atoms packed in a honeycomb structure, demonstrates a strong interaction with the substrate that dramatically affects its electronic structure. The role of electronic coupling in the chemical reactivity between the silicene and the substrate is still unclear so far, which is of great importance for functionalization of silicene layers. Here, we report the reconstructions and hybridized electronic structures of epitaxial 4 3 4 silicene on Ag(111), which are revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The hybridization between Si and Ag results in a metallic surface state, which can …

We prepare single-unit-cell FeSe films on insulating SrTiO3 substrates by molecular beam epitaxy and investigate the evolution of their superconducting properties with annealing by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy and ex situ transport measurements. We find that through an annealing process, the superconductivity of 1-uc FeSe films on SrTiO3 substrates develops with the formation of stoichiometric FeSe films and is further enhanced by charge transfer from SrTiO3 substrates to FeSe films. Moreover, the superconductivity is independent of the bulk property of the SrTiO3 substrate, regardless of whether it is insulating or conductive. Our results reveal that …

Alzheimer's disease is characterised by the inappropriate death of brain cells and accumulation of the A beta peptide in the brain. Thus, it is possible that there are fundamental differences between Alzheimer's disease patients and healthy individuals in their abilities to clear A beta from brain fluid and to protect neurons from A beta toxicity. In the present study, we examined (1) the cytotoxicity of Alzheimer's disease cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) compared to control CSF, (2) the ability of Alzheimer's disease and control CSF to protect cells from A beta toxicity and to promote cell-mediated clearance of A beta and lastly …

A remarkable 300% efficiency enhancement driven by a matching increase in the short circuit current was observed in a mixed porphyrin dye-sensitized solar cell constructed from two dyes in a 3:1 ratio. Absorbed photon-to-current conversion efficiency measurements indicate an improved charge injection yield for both dyes in the mixture. Several possible origins for the observed performance enhancement are discussed.
