The biomedical titanium alloy Ti6Al4V has excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility and is, therefore, widely used in orthopedic and orthodontic implants. Biomedical implants are increasingly fabricated by additive manufacturing, such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). These manufacturing protocols often include sandblasting, surface finish, and passivation. This study aims to investigate the effect of different surface finishes and the commonly used ASTM F86-13 nitric acid passivation for LPBF Ti6Al4V on its corrosion resistance, metal release, and surface changes in benign (bovine serum albumin in a pH 7.4 buffer) and harsh (hydrochloric acid at pH 1.5) solutions using various electrochemical and …

Ohmic Drop Compensation In Electrochemical Measurement, Jia-Qi Chen, Xu-Xu Ye, Ling-Wen Liao, Zhen Wei, Mian-Le Xu, Yan-Xia Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
The solution resistance (Ru) between the working electrode (WE) and the reference electrode (RE) may lead to significant Ohmic drop (iRu) and deviation of actually applied potential at the WE to the desired ones in electrochemical measurement. In the case of high current or large Ru, iRu compensation is imperative. Errors associated with insufficient compensation of theiRu drop may significantly affect the accuracy of data measured by conventional electrochemical methods, which may consequently result in wrong judgment and conclusions. In this article, we discuss important factors which may affect …

Optimization Of Microbial Fuel Cells, Norberto M. Gonzalez
Dissertations
Optimization of microbial fuel cells is investigated by utilizing Shewanella oneidensis as a model microorganism. the microbe's ability to grow and use glucose as a carbon source is explored under varying oxygen environments through an offline PMP derivatization method and HPLC analysis. Shewanella growth and glucose utilization is enhanced under aerobic environments; however, under microaerobic environments the addition of ferric iron results in a faster exponential growth initialization. a flavin mononucleotide modified indium tin oxide electrode is prepared and characterized for its usefulness in microbial fuel cells by controlled potential electrolysis, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies. the electrode …

Research On Internal Resistance Monitor System Of Vehicle Fuel Cell Integrated With Dc/Ac/Dc, Deng Jian, Haiquan Lü, Liyan Zhang, Shuhai Quan
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In order to solve the problem of complicated and costly on-line impedance monitoring operation of vehicle fuel cells, a test method that can obtain the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of fuel cell by Fourier transformation against output voltage and output current of fuel cell through DC/DC generation of micro-current signal is proposed. This method is integrated in a cascaded system of parallel Boost and DC/AC/DC. The parallel Boost can realize the decoupling of power transmission and disturbance signal, the DC/AC/DC converters can achieve higher boost ratios, which makes the test system more suitable for higher voltage levels such as …
An Investigation Of The Synergistic Effect Between (1,3-Dioxolan-2-Ylmethyl)Triphenylphosphonium Bromide And Iodide Ion For The Corrosion Inhibition Of Zinc In Citric Acid, Saadawy M.
Journal of Electrochemistry
The effect of (1,3-Dioxolan-2-ylmethyl)-triphenylphosphonium bromide (DTPB) on the zinc corrosion in 0.5 mol·L-1 citric acid solution was investigated at 30 oC using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. An ecofriendly bath was used for acid cleaning of zinc, which has not been widely used in literatures. The results showed that DTPB could serve as an effective inhibitor for the zinc corrosion in a citric acid solution with the inhibition efficiency of 98.9% at the DTPB concentration of 3×10-3 mol·L-1. A synergistic effect between DTPB and potassium iodide (KI) enhanced the inhibition …

Naio4 Oxidation Of Mussel Adhesive Protein Film And Its Corrosion Protection For Mg-1.0ca Alloy, Rui-Qing Hou, Ping-Li Jiang, Shi-Gang Dong, Chang-Jian Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
The effect of oxidation of mussel adhesive protein (Mefp-1) film on the corrosive resistance for Mg-1.0Ca alloy was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atom force microscopy (AFM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and electrochemical methods. The results showed that the NaIO4 induced oxidation of the pre-formed Mefp-1 film with porous morphology involved structural change of the DOPA group in the protein and resulted in a more uniform film with net-like morphology. The protein film without oxidation had an increasing resistance for the corrosion of Mg-1.0Ca alloy up to 7 days exposure. After oxidation, Epit …

Eis Study On The Change Of Resistance And Water Absorption During The Failure Graduation Of Inorganic Zinc-Rich/Epoxy/Aliphatic Polyurethane Composite Coatings, Shao-Ping He, Jin-Ping Xiong, Yu-Ming Tang, Yu Zuo
Journal of Electrochemistry
The failure process of inorganic zinc-rich/micaceous iron oxide epoxy/aliphatic polyurethane composite coatings in 3.5% NaCl solution under ultraviolet radiation(UV) was studied with Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS).The result shows that the protective property of the coating was enhanced with the increase of total coating thickness, but the degree of improvement reduced gradully as the coating thickness increased. The shielding effect of the micaceous iron oxide epoxy was mainly reflected in the initial period of the service process, while in later period the coating performance largely depended on the zinc-rich primer. The change of the water uptake in the composite coating presented a 'three-stage' characteristic. The thinner the …

Effect Of Naphthalene Water Reducer On Corrosion Behavior Of Reinforcing Steel In Concrete, Yu-Ming Tang, Jie Zhang, Yu Zuo
Effect Of Naphthalene Water Reducer On Corrosion Behavior Of Reinforcing Steel In Concrete, Yu-Ming Tang, Jie Zhang, Yu Zuo
Journal of Electrochemistry
The influence of naphthalene water reducer on corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in concrete was studied by the methods of corrosion potential measurement, linear polarization and EIS test. The values of concrete resistance(Rc) and polarization resistance(Rp) of the samples with naphthalene water reducer were higher than those without naphthalene water reducer, especially in the concrete with 0.2 percent naphthalene water reducer.A suitable amount of water reducer can improve the pore structures of concrete, increase the concrete compactness and impermeability, and decrease corrosion rate of rebars in concrete.

The Mechanism Of Electrochemical Testing Method Under Synergistic Effect Of Nacl And Water Vapor At 600℃, Li Liu, Ying Li, Fu-Hui Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The existence of electrochemical reaction during the corrosion process of pure Fe under a deposit of solid NaCl in water vapor at above 400 ℃ had been detected by measuring the corrosion current using double-layer electrode. In EIS measurement, only one capacitive loop was obtained on the pure metals and this gave the information of oxide layer on them. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and scanning-electron microscopy(SEM) results testified that there is a good relationship between the resistance of oxide layer Rox and the corresion reaction rate for pure metals with different oxidation times. The electrochemical technique is an effective method for studying corrosion performance …
Localised Galvanic Corrosion Processes In Thermal Spray Coated/Cast Aluminium Alloy Systems, David Culliton, Tony Betts, David Kennedy
Localised Galvanic Corrosion Processes In Thermal Spray Coated/Cast Aluminium Alloy Systems, David Culliton, Tony Betts, David Kennedy
Conference Papers
Cast Aluminium Alloys, because of the propensity of aluminium to react with impurities and alloying elements, are prone to developing IM impurities during the solidification process. These IM phases can act, in some fluids, as initiation sites for localised corrosion processes, resulting in degradation phenomena, such as pitting. Whilst Thermal Spray coatings can improve the wear resistance of Cast Aluminium Alloys, their corrosion performance may be hampered by the presence of through porosity within the coating.
The present work details some preliminary studies of the localised corrosion processes occurring at the interface area between a Thermal Spray coating and a …

Study On The Corrosion Of Chlorine Condenser By Electrochemical Method, Bin Xiang, Wen Chen, Wen-Zhang Huang, Shao-Hua Xing, Sheng-Tao Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Corrosion of condenser is very seriously in chlorine-alkali industry, which could lead to fatal disaster. The most commonly used material in low pressure condenser includes steel of 16MnR,10#,and welding rod of J507.Electrochemical analysis of the three materials in 29.9%(by mass) calcium chloride(CaCl2) solution was carried out.The corrosion current density icorr and impedance parameters of the three materials in 29.9% CaCl2 solution were estimated separately. The result showed that in the tripartite phase regions where the 10# seamless tube and 16MnR armor plate were jointed by welding, the weld was firstly eroded and suggested that the chlorine condenser should be examined and repaired every year.
