Two Roads, One Destination: A Journey Of Discovery, Karen Joc, Peta J. Hopkins, Jessie Donaghey, Wendy Abbott

Peta Hopkins

The adoption of resource discovery platforms has been a growing trend in libraries. However, few libraries have reported on the transition from one discovery layer to another, and only a few institutions have discussed two discovery layers available in the same institution at the same time. Bond University Library recently implemented Alma as its library management system, and with this change a new discovery platform, Primo, was implemented to supersede the existing Summon platform. This paper presents the results of a usability study undertaken at Bond University Library in the move from one discovery layer to another.

Towards Qos-Based Web Services Discovery, Jun Yan, Jingtai Piao Dec 2012

Towards Qos-Based Web Services Discovery, Jun Yan, Jingtai Piao

Dr Jun Yan

The current UDDI-based web services discovery technologies are designed to discover services which can satisfy consumers’ functional requirements. The consumers’ non-functional requirements such as quality of services are largely ignored in discovery. This may lead to the problem that the services returned from discovery are ineffective and even useless. To solve this problem, this paper presents an approach to achieving QoS-based Web services discovery. Data structures are proposed for both service providers and service consumers to describe non-functional information about services. A serial of algorithms are developed for matching and ranking services according to consumers’ non-functional requirements.

Business Rules Discovery From Process Design Repositories, Jantima Polpinij, Aditya K. Ghose, Hoa Khanh Dam Dec 2012

Business Rules Discovery From Process Design Repositories, Jantima Polpinij, Aditya K. Ghose, Hoa Khanh Dam

Professor Aditya K. Ghose

Traditional process mining approaches focus on extracting process constraints or business rules from repositories of process instances. In this context, process designs or process models tend to be overlooked although they contain information that are valuable for the process of discovering business rules. This paper will propose an alternative approach to process mining in terms of using process designs as the mining resources. We propose a number of techniques for extracting business rules from repositories of business process designs or models, leveraging the well-known Apriori algorithm. Such business rules are then used as a prior knowledge for further analysing, verifying, …

Waypoints On A Journey Of Discovery: Mental Models In Human Environment Interactions, Timothy Lynam, Raphael Mathevet, Michel Etienne, Samantha Stone-Jovicich, Anne Leitch, Nathalie Jones, Helen Ross, Derick Du Toit, Sharon Pollard, Harry Biggs, Pascal Perez Nov 2012

Waypoints On A Journey Of Discovery: Mental Models In Human Environment Interactions, Timothy Lynam, Raphael Mathevet, Michel Etienne, Samantha Stone-Jovicich, Anne Leitch, Nathalie Jones, Helen Ross, Derick Du Toit, Sharon Pollard, Harry Biggs, Pascal Perez

Professor Pascal Perez

Although the broad concept of mental models is gaining currency as a way to explore the link between how people think and interact with their world, this concept is limited by a theoretical and practical understanding of how it can be applied in the study of human-environment relationships. Tools and processes are needed to be able to elicit and analyze mental models. Because mental models are not directly observable, it is also important to understand how the application of any tools and processes affects what is measured. Equally important are the needs to be clear on the intent of the …

From Artifacts To Aggregations: Modeling Scientific Life Cycles On The Semantic Web, Alberto Pepe, Matthew Mayernik, Christine Borgman, Herbert Van De Sompel Jul 2009

From Artifacts To Aggregations: Modeling Scientific Life Cycles On The Semantic Web, Alberto Pepe, Matthew Mayernik, Christine Borgman, Herbert Van De Sompel

Alberto Pepe

In the process of scientific research, many information objects are generated, all of which may remain valuable indefinitely. However, artifacts such as instrument data and associated calibration information may have little value in isolation; their meaning is derived from their relationships to each other. Individual artifacts are best represented as components of a life cycle that is specific to a scientific research domain or project. Current cataloging practices do not describe objects at a sufficient level of granularity nor do they offer the globally persistent identifiers necessary to discover and manage scholarly products with World Wide Web standards. The Open …
