Assessing The Influence Of Smart Mobile Devices On How Employees Work, Adam L. Gorski
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The smart mobile device market penetration reached 50% and has been increasing an average of 39% per year in the United States. More than 70% of the smart mobile device owners use such devices for personal and work activities. The problem was the lack of management's understanding of the effect smart mobile device use has on how employees work when they are in the office, while traveling, or during the off-hours to improve productivity and customer service. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand why, when, and how employees used smart mobile devices. The transformational technology conceptual framework …

In this paper, lead chalcogenide based thermoelectric nanolaminate structures were fabricated by alternately depositing PbTe and PbSe ALD layers on regular planar silicon wafers and on microporous silicon templates. Lead bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato) (Pb(C11H19O2) 2), plus (trimethylsilyl) telluride ((Me3Si)2Te) and (trimethylsilyl) selenide ((Me3Si)2Se) were used as the chemical ALD precursors for lead, tellurium and selenium, respectively. The Seebeck coefficient in horizontal direction (parallel direction to the surface) to the multiple layered PbTe/PbSe nanolaminate structures was measured by an MMR Seebeck system, and benchmarked against the Seebeck coefficient …

We present a novel, low-resource fabrication and assembly method for creating disposable amperometric detectors in hybrid paper-polymer devices. Currently, mere paper-based microfluidics is far from being able to achieve the same level of process control and integration as state-of-the-art microfluidic devices made of polymers. To overcome this limitation, in this work both substrate types are synergistically combined through a hybrid, multi-component/multi-material system assembly. Using established inkjet wax printing, we transform the paper into a profoundly hydrophobic substrate in order to create carbon electrodes which are simply patterned from carbon inks via custom made adhesive stencils. By virtue of the compressibility …

Security Frameworks For Machine-To-Machine Devices And Networks, Michael Demblewski
CCE Theses and Dissertations
Attacks against mobile systems have escalated over the past decade. There have been increases of fraud, platform attacks, and malware. The Internet of Things (IoT) offers a new attack vector for Cybercriminals. M2M contributes to the growing number of devices that use wireless systems for Internet connection. As new applications and platforms are created, old vulnerabilities are transferred to next-generation systems. There is a research gap that exists between the current approaches for security framework development and the understanding of how these new technologies are different and how they are similar. This gap exists because system designers, security architects, and …

Medical systems are designed for a range of end users from different professional skill groups and people who carry the devices in and on their bodies. Open, accurate, and efficient communication is the priority for medical systems and consequently strong protection costs are traded against the utility benefits for open systems. In this paper we assess the vulnerabilities created by the professional and end user expectations, and theorise ways to mitigate wireless security vulnerabilities. The benefits of wireless medical services are great in terms of efficiencies, mobility, and information management. These benefits may be realised by treating the vulnerabilities and …

The most commonly used method to tune the colour transition states of an ECD is to modify the chemical structure of the electrochromic polymers to achieve the desired transparent to dark state switching colours. However, this approach can present significant synthetic challenges that typically result in a compromise in device performance parameters such as contrast range or stability as well as solvent processability. In this study we have investigated tuning the dark-state colour of an ECD (at +0.8 V) by solution mixing poly(3,3-dihexyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepine) (PProDOT-(Hx)2), which has an excellent contrast performance but with an esthetically undesirable purple colour transition, with poly(3,3-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno …

Implantable electrodes interface with the human body for a range of therapeutic as well as diagnostic applications. Here we provide an overview of controlled delivery strategies used in neuro-bionics. Controlled delivery of bioactive molecules has been used to minimise reactive cellular and tissue responses and/or promote nerve preservation and neurite outgrowth toward the implanted electrode. These effects are integral to establishing a chronically stable and effective electrode-neural communication. Drug-eluting bioactive coatings, organic conductive polymers, or integrated microfabricated drug delivery channels are strategies commonly used.

Accurate characterization and reporting of organic photovoltaic (OPV) device performance remains one of the important challenges in the field. The large spread among the efficiencies of devices with the same structure reported by different groups is significantly caused by different procedures and equipment used during testing. The presented article addresses this issue by offering a new method of device testing using "suitcase sample" approach combined with outdoor testing that limits the diversity of the equipment, and a strict measurement protocol. A round robin outdoor characterization of roll-to-roll coated OPV cells and modules conducted among 46 laboratories worldwide is presented, where …

The authors experimentally demonstrate an electrically switchable gratings based on polymer-stabilized, field-induced two-dimensional square-lattice pattern of a cholesteric liquid crystal. A dependence of the two-dimensional diffraction patterns with the magnitude of applied voltage is observed for before and after the polymer stabilization. The diffraction efficiency reaches 84% calculated for the zero order light intensity at the applied voltage of 0.23 V/mu m for a 10 mu m thick sample.

Recent studies of azo-dye-doped liquid crystal elastomers show a strong photomechanical response. We report on models that predict experimental results that suggest photothermal heating is the dominant mechanism in a planar constrained geometry. We compare our models with experiments to determine key material parameters, which are used to predict the dynamical response as a function of intensity. We show that a local strain from photothermal heating and a nonlocal strain from thermal diffusion is responsible for the observed length changes over time. This work both elucidates the fundamental mechanisms and provides input for the design of photomechanical optical devices, which …

An existing model for solvent penetration and drug release from a spherically shaped polymeric drug delivery device is revisited. The model has two moving boundaries, one that describes the interface between the glassy and rubbery states of the polymer, and another that defines the interface between the polymer ball and the pool of solvent. The model is extended so that the nonlinear diffusion coefficient of drug explicitly depends on the concentration of solvent, and the resulting equations are solved numerically using a front fixing transformation together with a finite difference spatial discretisation and the method of lines. We present evidence …

Incorporation of radio controller units into heavy equipment used in the electricity industry provides numerous advantages including: improved electrical isolation between plant and operator, ability to incorporate an additional remote operator, and reductions in vehicle wiring and hydraulic hoses for equipment control. However, secure operation of vehicles and plant incorporating radio control rely on establishing suitable levels of immunity to possible radio frequency interference. Interference levels in close proximity to high voltage power lines are of special concern to the electricity industry. This paper reports on a preliminary investigation into quantifying the levels of background radio interference at such locations …

A polymer-wall-confined transmissive switchable liquid crystal grating is proposed and investigated by two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain optical calculation and liquid-crystal-director calculation, to our knowledge for the first time. The results show how to obtain optimized conditions for high diffraction efficiency by adjusting the liquid crystal parameters, grating geometric structure, and applied voltages. The light propagation direction and efficiency can be accurately calculated and visualized concurrently.

A liquid crystal blazed grating having a prismatic polymer microstructure has been developed. The polymer structure is fabricated by photo-induced localization and polymerization of a small concentration of monomer onto one substrate of an electro-optical cell by using ultraviolet light irradiation at 45degrees direction from normal incident. Using this method a periodical one-dimensional pattern with a prismatic shape of polymer can be formed on a one-dimensional pattern-forming state of a cholesteric host. The optical diffraction properties of the grating are evaluated by the application of electric field and light incident angles.
