Patient Movement Monitoring Based On Imu And Deep Learning, Mohsen Sharifi Renani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the leading cause of disability among the aging population in the United States and is frequently treated by replacing deteriorated joints with metal and plastic components. Developing better quantitative measures of movement quality to track patients longitudinally in their own homes would enable personalized treatment plans and hasten the advancement of promising new interventions. Wearable sensors and machine learning used to quantify patient movement could revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders. The purpose of this dissertation was to overcome technical challenges associated with the use of wearable sensors, specifically Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), as a …

Artificial Intelligence In Prediction Of The Remaining Useful Life Of Wind Turbine Shaft Bearings, Jinsiang Shaw, B.J. Wu Jan 2023

Artificial Intelligence In Prediction Of The Remaining Useful Life Of Wind Turbine Shaft Bearings, Jinsiang Shaw, B.J. Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Long-term periodic rotation and unstable load changes in wind turbines can cause unexpected damage to high-speed shaft bearings (HSSBs). In this study, after preprocessing of the HSSB vibration signal, four different models for predicting bearing degradation in terms of remaining useful life (RUL) in days were investigated: support vector regression (SVR), convolutional neural networks (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and CNN-LSTM. The experimental results revealed that the CNN achieved the best mean absolute error (MAE), at 0.44 days, based on frequency response plot using the fast Fourier transform (FFT), while that of the CNN-LSTM model predicted using the amplitude profile …

Data-Driven Research On Engineering Design Thinking And Behaviors In Computer-Aided Systems Design: Analysis, Modeling, And Prediction, Molla Hafizur Rahman Aug 2022

Data-Driven Research On Engineering Design Thinking And Behaviors In Computer-Aided Systems Design: Analysis, Modeling, And Prediction, Molla Hafizur Rahman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research on design thinking and design decision-making is vital for discovering and utilizing beneficial design patterns, strategies, and heuristics of human designers in solving engineering design problems. It is also essential for the development of new algorithms embedded with human intelligence and can facilitate human-computer interactions. However, modeling design thinking is challenging because it takes place in the designer’s mind, which is intricate, implicit, and tacit. For an in-depth understanding of design thinking, fine-grained design behavioral data are important because they are the critical link in studying the relationship between design thinking, design decisions, design actions, and design performance. Therefore, …

Integrating Deep Learning And Hydrodynamic Modeling To Improve The Great Lakes Forecast, Pengfei Xue, Aditya Wagh, Gangfeng Ma, Yilin Wang, Yongchao Yang, Tao Liu, Chenfu Huang

Michigan Tech Publications

The Laurentian Great Lakes, one of the world’s largest surface freshwater systems, pose a modeling challenge in seasonal forecast and climate projection. While physics-based hydrodynamic modeling is a fundamental approach, improving the forecast accuracy remains critical. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has quickly emerged in geoscience applications, but its application to the Great Lakes hydrodynamic prediction is still in its early stages. This work is the first one to explore a deep learning approach to predicting spatiotemporal distributions of the lake surface temperature (LST) in the Great Lakes. Our study shows that the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network, …

Deep Learning Object-Based Detection Of Manufacturing Defects In X-Ray Inspection Imaging, Juan C. Parducci May 2022

Deep Learning Object-Based Detection Of Manufacturing Defects In X-Ray Inspection Imaging, Juan C. Parducci

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Current analysis of manufacturing defects in the production of rims and tires via x-ray inspection at an industry partner’s manufacturing plant requires that a quality control specialist visually inspect radiographic images for defects of varying sizes. For each sample, twelve radiographs are taken within 35 seconds. Some defects are very small in size and difficult to see (e.g., pinholes) whereas others are large and easily identifiable. Implementing this quality control practice across all products in its human-effort driven state is not feasible given the time constraint present for analysis.

This study aims to identify and develop an object detector capable …

A Deep Learning-Based Approach To Extraction Of Filler Morphology In Sem Images With The Application Of Automated Quality Inspection, Md. Fashiar Rahman, Tzu-Liang Bill Tseng, Jianguo Wu, Yuxin Wen, Yirong Lin Mar 2022

A Deep Learning-Based Approach To Extraction Of Filler Morphology In Sem Images With The Application Of Automated Quality Inspection, Md. Fashiar Rahman, Tzu-Liang Bill Tseng, Jianguo Wu, Yuxin Wen, Yirong Lin

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Automatic extraction of filler morphology (size, orientation, and spatial distribution) in Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) images is essential in many applications such as automatic quality inspection in composite manufacturing. Extraction of filler morphology greatly depends on accurate segmentation of fillers (fibers and particles), which is a challenging task due to the overlap of fibers and particles and their obscure presence in SEM images. Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) have been shown to be very effective at object recognition in digital images. This paper proposes an automatic filler detection system in SEM images, utilizing a Mask Region-based CNN architecture. The proposed system …

Uncertainty-Aware Deep Learning For Prediction Of Remaining Useful Life Of Mechanical Systems, Samuel J. Cornelius Dec 2021

Uncertainty-Aware Deep Learning For Prediction Of Remaining Useful Life Of Mechanical Systems, Samuel J. Cornelius

Theses and Dissertations

Remaining useful life (RUL) prediction is a problem that researchers in the prognostics and health management (PHM) community have been studying for decades. Both physics-based and data-driven methods have been investigated, and in recent years, deep learning has gained significant attention. When sufficiently large and diverse datasets are available, deep neural networks can achieve state-of-the-art performance in RUL prediction for a variety of systems. However, for end users to trust the results of these models, especially as they are integrated into safety-critical systems, RUL prediction uncertainty must be captured. This work explores an approach for estimating both epistemic and heteroscedastic …
