"We report novel methods for the synthesis of porous materials such as polymeric aerogel foams, pure metallic aerogels, amorphous and graphitic carbon aerogels, and their applications. I. Polyurethane based aerogel foams were synthesized with an aliphatic triisocyanate and ethylene glycol through a pressurized (7 bar) sol-gel method. The foam-like structure is prepared without any chemical foaming agents or templates, resulting in less expensive, more efficient, readily adaptable, and environmentally friendly process. Those materials exhibited lower thermal conductivity (by 25%) and higher oil adsorption capacity (by 36% w/w) than their corresponding aerogels. II. This paper is a thorough investigation of the chemical transformations during pyrolytic conversion of phenolic resins to carbons, and reports that all carbons obtained from main-stream phenolic resins including phloroglucinol-formaldehyde (FPOL), phloroglucinol-terephthalaldehyde (TPOL), resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF), and phenol-formaldehyde (PF) contain fused pyrylium rings and charge-compensating phenoxides. Those four phenolic resins were prepared via a fast HCl-catalyzed process as low-density nanostructured solids classified as aerogels, which, owing to their open porosity, allowed air circulation through their bulk. Triple differential cross sections (TDCSs) of the electron-impact ionization of carbon dioxide are measured in the coplanar asymmetric geometry, with incident electron energy value of 250eV, and ejected electron of 37eV. We will report the experimental results in comparison with the theoretical calculations of the M3DW and TCC (type 5) calculations.

Single ionization of the methane (CH4) 1t2 orbital by 54 eV electron impact has been studied experimentally and theoretically. The measured triple differential cross sections cover nearly a 4π solid angle for the emission of low energy electrons and a range of projectile scattering angles. Experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations from the distorted wave Born approximation and the molecular three-body distorted wave models. It is found that theory can give a proper description of the main features of experimental cross section only at smaller scattering angles. The interdependence between geoelectrical signatures at underground petroleum plumes and the structures of subsurface microbial communities was investigated. For sediments contaminated with light non-aqueous-phase liquids, anomalous high conductivity values have been observed. Vertical changes in the geoelectrical properties of the sediments were concomitant with significant changes in the microbial community structures as determined by the construction and evaluation of 16S rRNA gene libraries. DNA sequencing of clones from four 16S rRNA gene libraries from different depths of a contaminated field site and two libraries from an uncontaminated background site revealed spatial heterogeneity in the microbial community structures. Reconciliation Of Measured Fully Differential Single Ionization Data With The First Born Approximation Convoluted With Elastic Scattering, Michael Schulz, M. Dürr, B. Najjari, R. Moshammer, J. D. Ullrich

An analysis of experimental fully differential data for single ionization in 100 MeV/amu C6++He collisions is reported. We present a convolution of the first Born approximation with elastic scattering by using an event generator technique. Furthermore, the calculation is convoluted with all known experimental resolutions. Our analysis shows that elastic scattering is a viable explanation for surprising structures observed in the fully differential cross sections outside the scattering plane. Furthermore, it may even explain discrepancies in the “recoil peak” frequently observed for both ion and electron impact.

Within a systematic approach based on dimensionally regularized nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics, we derive a complete result for the two-loop correction to order ( α/ π )2 ( Zα )4 for the g factor of an electron bound in an nS state of a hydrogenlike ion. The results obtained significantly improve the accuracy of the theoretical predictions for the hydrogenlike carbon and oxygen ions and influence the value of the electron mass inferred from g-factor measurements. Geochemical data from closely spaced vertical intervals in a hydrocarbon-impacted aquifer were used to assess the relationship between bulk conductivity and zones of enhanced microbial activity. The bulk conductivity was measured using in situ vertical resistivity probes. Microbial activity was verified using terminal electron acceptors (nitrate, sulfate, iron, and manganese), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and major ion chemistry. Peaks in bulk conductivity in the aquifer overlapped with zones where nitrates and sulfates were depleted, total petroleum hydrocarbon, iron, manganese, dissolved ions, and DIC were elevated, suggesting a link between higher electrical conductivity and zones of enhanced microbial activity stimulated by …

Within a systematic approach based on nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics, we derive the one-loop self-energy correction of order α ( Z α )4 to the bound-electron g factor. In combination with numerical data, this analytic result improves theoretical predictions for the self-energy correction for carbon and oxygen by an order of magnitude. Basing on one-loop calculations, we obtain the logarithmic two-loop contribution of order α2 ( Z α )4 ln [ ( Z α )- 2 ] and the dominant part of the corresponding constant term. Charge Transfer In Slow Collisions Of C⁴⁺ With H Below 1 Kev/Amu, Chen-Nan Liu, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin

We reexamined charge-transfer cross sections for C⁴⁺ + H collisions for energies from 1 meV/amu to 1 keV/amu using the recently developed hyperspherical close-coupling method. Our results agree with several previous theoretical calculations using molecular-orbital expansion. However, these converged theoretical predictions do not agree with total cross sections from the merged-beam experiments.

We measured the concentration and isotope ratio of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in groundwater associated with denitrification (Corg + NO3- = CO2 + N2) in an agriculturally impacted site in southwestern Michigan. Samples with the lowest nitrate levels also had low dissolved oxygen content and were more depleted in δ13C than background groundwater. All the samples had DIC concentrations in excess of titratable alkalinity. The magnitude of this DIC in excess of alkalinity correlated with a decreasing δ13C attesting to the presence of CO2 derived from organic carbon. Carbon …

Aircraft-based measurements of sulfur dioxide, acetone, carbon dioxide, and condensation nuclei (CN) were made over the north-eastern Atlantic at upper tropospheric altitudes, around 9000 m. On October 14, 1993, strong SO 2- and acetone-pollution (both up to 3 ppbv) were observed, which were accompanied by a CO 2-enhancement of up to 6 ppmv, and large CN-concentrations of up to about 1500 cm -3 (for radii ≥ 6 nm). CN, excess CO 2, and to a lesser degree also acetone, were positively correlated with SO 2. Air mass trajectory analyses indicate, that most of the air masses …
