Hybridisation and introgression of eukaryotic genomes can generate new species or subsume existing ones, with direct and indirect consequences for biodiversity. An understudied component of these evolutionary forces is their potentially rapid effect on host gut microbiomes, and whether these pliable microcosms may serve as early biological indicators of speciation. We address this hypothesis in a field study of angelfishes (genus Centropyge), which have one of the highest prevalence of hybridisation within coral reef fish. In our study region of the Eastern Indian Ocean, the parent fish species and their hybrids cohabit and display no differences in their diet, behaviour, …
Collapsibility And Z-Compactifications Of Cat(0) Cube Complexes, Daniel L. Gulbrandsen
Collapsibility And Z-Compactifications Of Cat(0) Cube Complexes, Daniel L. Gulbrandsen
Theses and Dissertations
We extend the notion of collapsibility to non-compact complexes and prove collapsibility of locally-finite CAT(0) cube complexes. Namely, we construct such a cube complex $X$ out of nested convex compact subcomplexes $\{C_i\}_{i=0}^\infty$ with the properties that $X=\cup_{i=0}^\infty C_i$ and $C_i$ collapses to $C_{i-1}$ for all $i\ge 1$.
We then define bonding maps $r_i$ between the compacta $C_i$ and construct an inverse sequence yielding the inverse limit space $\varprojlim\{C_i,r_i\}$. This will provide a new way of Z-compactifying $X$. In particular, the process will yield a new Z-boundary, called the cubical boundary.

Gis Data: King & Queen County Tidal Marsh Inventory, Marcia Berman, Karinna Nunez, Sharon Killeen, Tamia Rudnicky, Julie G. Bradshaw, Carl Hershner, Evan Hill
Data
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science published the first Tidal marsh Inventories using data collected in the early 1970's. Using high resolution color infra-red imagery from 2009 a new Tidal Marsh Inventory has been developed for the York River Watershed in 2010. Marsh boundaries were generated using heads-up digitizing techniques at a scale of 1:1,000. Each marsh polygon was classified by morphologic type: fringe, extensive, embayed, or marsh island. Marshes were ground-truthed in the field where a community type index was assigned to each marsh based on plant community make-up. Each marsh was also coded with a marsh number which …

Natural Resources Governance Employing Blockchain-Based Decision-Making, Farinaz Sabz Ali Pour, Adrian Gheorghe
Natural Resources Governance Employing Blockchain-Based Decision-Making, Farinaz Sabz Ali Pour, Adrian Gheorghe
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Natural resources are essential structures of socio-economic systems which shape the well-being of humanity, environment, and the economy. Human actions have become the critical responsibility for environmental changes and pressuring many planetary boundaries. Having a systematic approach can provide a governance platform including the inherent characteristics of the resource, the historically established form of use, and transaction costs. A natural resource governance framework is developed by applying Blockchain technology as the primary goal of this study to regulate and manage the extraction and trades. Blockchain technology provides a distributed concurrency monitoring system for sustainable resource management. Persistent and pervasive cooperation …

Engaged research emphasizes researcher–stakeholder collaborations as means of improving the relevance of research outcomes and the chances for science-based decision-making. Sustainability science, as a form of engaged research, depends on the collaborative abilities and cooperative tendencies of researchers. We use an economic experiment to measure cooperation between university faculty, local citizens, and faculty engaged in a large sustainability science project to test a set of hypotheses: (1) faculty on the sustainability project will cooperate more with local residents than non-affiliated faculty, (2) sustainability faculty will have the highest level of internal cooperation of any group, and (3) that cooperation may …

Book Review - Women In Leadership: Contextual Dynamics And Boundaries, Christine Eriksen
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Leadership scenarios and paradoxes - past, present and future - form the basis of Karin Klenke's analysis of women in leadership. The book sets out to explore the paradoxical nature of women's leadership in male-dominated contexts, paradoxes women leaders are confronted with, as well as the paradox of change versus the persistence of the status quo. Contexts with a 'paradoxical nature'- temporally and spatially - are at the forefront. These 'contexts' for women's leadership range from remarkable female leaders, today and historically, in politics, organisational structures, information technology (IT), the media, sports, the military, religion and spirituality, science, higher education …
Living With Trees – Perspectives From The Suburbs, Lesley M. Head, Pat Muir
Living With Trees – Perspectives From The Suburbs, Lesley M. Head, Pat Muir
Lesley Head
A study of suburban backyards and backyarders in Sydney and Wollongong revealed evidence of attitudes and behaviours in relation to trees. Attitudes are characterised under themes that indicate conditions of tolerance and belonging. They include attachment/risk, order/freedom and nativeness/alienness. While love is common, high levels of suspicion and intolerance towards trees in the suburban context are more common. Our findings confirm and throw further light on previous work indicating that many Australians have very partitioned views of the world in relationto where humans and nonhuman lifeforms belong. This partitioning must be understood in conceptual as well as spatial terms.

Suburban Life And The Boundaries Of Nature: Resilience And Rupture In Australian Backyard Gardens, Lesley M. Head, Pat Muir

Despite an academic shift from dualistic to hybrid frameworks of culture/nature relations, separationist paradigms of environmental management have great resilience and vernacular appeal. The conditions under which they are reinforced, maintained or ruptured need more detailed attention because of the urgent environmental challenges of a humanly transformed earth. We draw on research in 265 Australian backyard gardens, focusing on two themes where conceptual and material bounding practices intertwine; spatial boundary-making and native plants. We trace the resilience of separationist approaches in the Australian context to the overlay of indigeneity/ non-indigeneity atop other dualisms, and their rupture to situations of close …

Using a recently developed broadband microwave measurement technique, we have studied the hysteretic appearance and disappearance with in-plane magnetic field of the uniform ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode of a patterned permalloy disk array. The observed features are consistent with our micromagnetic simulations (performed on an infinite array of such disk), which predict that on decreasing the magnetic field from a positively magnetized state at positive fields the array will: (i) pass continuously into a double-vortex state; (ii) followed by a discontinuous transition to a single-vortex state; and finally (iii) discontinuously into a negatively magnetized state at some negative field. The …

The ca. 3000 km2ItsaqGneissComplex of the Nuuk region, southernWestGreenland was the first body of pre-3600 Ma crust discovered. Such ancient gneisses are now also known elsewhere, but in total form only about a millionth of the modern crust. The other 99.9999% of ancient crust was destroyed by melting and erosion over billions of years. Understanding the origin of this oldest crust is hampered by metamorphism (repeatedly) in the amphibolite or granulite facies, and most of it having been strongly deformed. The ItsaqGneissComplex is dominated by polyphase grey gneisses derived from several suites of tonalites, granites and subordinate quartz-diorites and ferro-gabbros …

Environmental Gradients, Community Boundaries, And Disturbance The Darlingtonia Fens Of Southwestern Oregon, Deborah A. Tolman
Environmental Gradients, Community Boundaries, And Disturbance The Darlingtonia Fens Of Southwestern Oregon, Deborah A. Tolman
Dissertations and Theses
The Darlingtonia fens, found on serpentine soils in southern Oregon, are distinct communities that frequently undergo dramatic changes in size and shape in response to a wide array of environmental factors. Since few systems demonstrate a balance among high water tables, shallow soils, the presence of heavy metals, and limited nutrients, conservative efforts have been made to preserve them. This dissertation investigates the role of fire on nutrient cycling and succession in three separate fens, each a different time since fire. I specifically analyze the spatial distributions of soil properties, the physical and ecological characteristics of ecotones between Jeffrey pine …

Boundaries and Water: Allocation and Use of a Shared Resource (Summer Conference, June 5-7)
Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors David H. Getches, Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Charles F. Wilkinson.
Boundaries and Water: Allocation and Use of a Shared Resource is the topic of the Center's annual summer program on water this June. Most of the major rivers in the western United States are shared between two or more states. Often tribal governments play an important role in water allocation and use decisions. International considerations also may be involved in some cases. These interjurisdictional issues extend to groundwater as well as surface water.

External Development Affecting the National Parks: Preserving "The Best Idea We Ever Had" (September 14-16)
Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Daniel Magraw.
The conference will be held at the Aspen Lodge, adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado.
It was Wallace Stegner who called the national parks "the best idea we ever had." The continuing increases in usage attest to their popularity. National parks are created to preserve areas of special scenic and cultural value for enjoyment and use. Managing the parks in a manner that protects the important values and purposes for which they were created presents important and difficult …
