We present a perturbative method for constructing approximate invariants of motion directly from the equations of discrete-time symplectic systems. This framework offers a natural nonlinear extension of the classic Courant-Snyder (CS) theory for systems with 1 degree of freedom—a foundational cornerstone in accelerator physics now spanning seven decades and historically focused on linear phenomena. The original CS formalism emerged under conditions where nonlinearities were weak, design goals favored linear motion, and analytical tools—such as the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory—had not yet been fully developed. While various normal-form methods have been proposed to treat near-integrable dynamics, the approach introduced here stands out for …

NaGaS2 and NaGaSe2 are two recently discovered compounds that crystallize in the same structure type. In this work, NaGa(S1−xSex)2 (x = 0.5, 0.75 and 1) are prepared using an alternative synthesis route, mechanochemistry followed by heat treatment. Na2S, Na2Se, Ga2S3 and Ga2Se3 are milled in stoichiometric proportions. Differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (23Na and 71Ga) show that the compounds after milling are composed of crystalline NaGa(S1−xSex)2 with an amorphous part. …

Designing Narrative-Based Ai Assistance For Sensemaking In Collaborative Environments: Case Studies In Education And Dementia Care, Dylan Edward Moore
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
This thesis addresses a gap in the human-computer interaction literature regarding the design, development, and evaluation of narrative-based AI assistance for collaborative, complex problem solving. I explore this design space through three case studies across the domains of education and dementia care. This work encompasses multi-year industry partnerships and longitudinal fieldwork, user-centered design, dataset curation, model training, and system evaluation.
Specifically, the first case study considers a story-based web platform for teaching AI literacy through peer-generated, personalized narrative scaffolding. Learners on the platform showed significant knowledge gains and other learning-related outcomes. To describe the novel design of this system, I …
Lifestyle Factors' Effect On Political And Religious Behavior, Madison A. Price
Lifestyle Factors' Effect On Political And Religious Behavior, Madison A. Price
SPARK Symposium Presentations
There is a general understanding of an individuals’ political/religious beliefs when you analyze predictors like support of same sex marriage or views on abortion, but there is not a ton of research on how everyday lifestyle factors might affect how someone aligns themselves politically or religiously. Researchers have begun to expand the horizons of political and religious research by investigating how income, health, and politics affect religion (Francis-Tan & Tian, 2022), but there is a need to expand into more specific lifestyle factors. Which brings reason to question a few things: what lifestyle and demographic factors predict how religious someone …
Temporal Patterns Of Storm Surges: Event-Identification, Clustering, And Count Modeling, Ariadna Martin Oliva
Temporal Patterns Of Storm Surges: Event-Identification, Clustering, And Count Modeling, Ariadna Martin Oliva
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Coastal regions face compounding risks when extreme events strike in rapid succession, yet most statistical frameworks treat such events as independent, a simplification that can critically underestimate hazard. This thesis addresses that gap through three interconnected contributions focused on the temporal clustering of storm surges at the global scale. A new automated method is developed to extract independent storm surge events from continuous tide gauge records. By leveraging event correlations and a soft-margin approach that accounts for local variability, the method identifies characteristic event durations across 1,485 global tide gauge stations, revealing the influence of both local site conditions and …

Road Log For The Natural History Of The Owens Valley And Eastern Sierra Nevada, D. D. Trent
Eastern Sierra History Journal
D.D. Trent, who taught Geology at Citrus College in Southern California for many years, developed this 1982 Road Log for his students for use on field trips. It contains many scientific findings and historical insights about the region and he also contributed hand-drawn maps and illustrations to capture their attention. The Road Log is introduced by Char Miller's essay, "Driving into the Past" and then annotated and updated by Prof. Nicole Moore in an article that follows.

Dystop: Dynamic Staleness Control And Topology Construction For Asynchronous Decentralized Federated Learning, Yizhou Shi, Qianpiao Ma, Yan Xu, Junlong Zhou, Ming Hu, Yunming Liao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a potential distributed learning paradigm that enables model training on edge devices (i.e., workers) while preserving data privacy. However, its reliance on a centralized server leads to limited scalability. Decentralized federated learning (DFL) eliminates the dependency on a centralized server by enabling peer-to-peer model exchange. Existing DFL mechanisms mainly employ synchronous communication, which may result in training inefficiencies under heterogeneous and dynamic edge environments. Although a few recent asynchronous DFL (ADFL) mechanisms have been proposed to address these issues, they typically yield stale model aggregation and frequent model transmission, leading to degraded training performance …

Purified Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval, Yang Zhou, Jingru Yang, Jin Wang, Kaixiang Huang, Guodong Lu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sketches, as a new solution in multimedia systems that can replace natural language, are characterized by sparse visual cues such as simple strokes that differ significantly from natural images containing complex elements such as background, foreground, and texture. This misalignment poses substantial challenges for zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (ZS-SBIR). Prior approaches match sketches to full images and tend to overlook redundant elements in natural images, leading to model distraction and semantic ambiguity. To address this issue, we introduce a distraction-agnostic framework, purified cross-domain matching (PuXIM), which operates on a straightforward principle: masking and matching. We devise a visual-cross-linguistic (VxL) sampler …

Trends in advanced sciences and technology
This study investigates the modification of glass substrates with TiO₂ thin films to enhance surface hydrophilicity and self-cleaning behavior. The films were deposited on glass by spin coating using different precursor concentrations, followed by thermal treatment. Structural and optical properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV–Vis spectroscopy, while surface wettability was evaluated through water contact angle measurements. XRD confirmed the formation of pure anatase TiO₂, while FTIR spectra verified the presence of Ti–O and Ti–O–Ti bonds. Wettability analysis showed that films prepared with the lowest precursor concentration exhibited the …
In Situ Observations Of Thermal Ions In Perturbed Ionospheres: Techniques And Results, Magdalina Louise Moses
In Situ Observations Of Thermal Ions In Perturbed Ionospheres: Techniques And Results, Magdalina Louise Moses
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Prediction and mitigation of space weather events are active research topics that require knowledge of the physics governing the ionosphere. Sounding rockets can be used to make in situ observations. The Lynch Rocket Lab created the Petite-Ion-Probe (PIP), a small retarding potential analyzer, to measure thermal ion parameters (i.e., ion density and temperature). A PIP's raw data consists of a series of measured anode currents as a function of screen bias voltages, called IV curves. PIPs can be integrated onto a sounding rocket’s main payload and/or be deployed from the rocket on small platforms called ``PIP-Bobs''. Note that as the …
Basis Design For Electronic Structure And Beyond, Weishi Wang
Basis Design For Electronic Structure And Beyond, Weishi Wang
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
At the intersection of quantum physics, quantum chemistry, and materials science, electronic structure is the study of electrons in solid-state and molecular systems. Electronic-structure computation relies on discretizing the many-electron Hamiltonian with a finite single-particle basis set. However, basis-set construction is conventionally treated as an ad hoc preprocessing step. This thesis develops an expressive and flexible framework for active, system-oriented basis-set design and numerical modeling strategies that treat basis functions as tunable representations to encode electronic ground-state information.
We first introduce a multi-layered, differentiable basis-construction framework that embeds a set of primitive parameters into mixed-contracted Gaussian-type orbitals. We then develop …
Active Galactic Nuclei Across Scales: From Blazar Jets To Dark Matter Halos, Stephanie Ann Podjed
Active Galactic Nuclei Across Scales: From Blazar Jets To Dark Matter Halos, Stephanie Ann Podjed
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Within ΛCDM, galaxies form and evolve within dark matter halos, with both central and satellite galaxies contributing to the total stellar mass content. Virtually every massive galaxy harbors a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at its center, with a small fraction of the population growing by actively accreting material; we call this an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The processes giving rise to an AGN phase (i.e., growth of a SMBH) releases enormous amounts of energy in the form of radiation, outflows, and relativistic jets that are able to significantly affect the formation and evolution of galaxies. Blazars are an extreme class …
Arrangements Of N Planes Resulting In One Bounded Tetrahedral Chamber, Ava Knight
Arrangements Of N Planes Resulting In One Bounded Tetrahedral Chamber, Ava Knight
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper investigates the combinatorial geometry of plane arrangements in three-dimensional space, focusing on configurations that produce exactly one bounded tetrahedral chamber. We define T(n) as the number of face-combinatorial equivalence classes of arrangements of n planes in ℝ³ containing exactly one bounded tetrahedral chamber. Known values — T(3) = 0, T(4) = 1, and T(5) = 2 — are established through direct construction, while T(6) remains an open problem. This paper contributes experimental evidence toward resolving T(6) by systematically extending the two valid 5-plane arrangements and verifying, through a plane removal argument, that each yields a valid plane configuration …
Machine Learning For Recession Prediction, Ethan Reusser
Machine Learning For Recession Prediction, Ethan Reusser
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Macroeconomic predictions present challenges in machine learning due to the rarity of economic recessions, the constantly-changing matter of global markets, and severe class imbalance in historical data. This project focuses on predicting the onset of United States economic recessions within a 12-month window using Python and Jupyter Notebook. A machine learning pipeline was developed utilizing multiple models: Logistic Regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks. For class imbalance, the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) was applied strictly to training data, paired with Platt scaling for calibration on thresholds. The resulting models were evaluated in the 2005 …

Think Jurassic Park. This honors thesis presents a comprehensive review of the history, current state, and methods of the field of molecular paleontology. Drawing on peer-reviewed literature and scholarly resources accessed through databases such as EBSCO and Bierce library, this review examines key techniques such as Next Generation Sequencing and amino acid racemization and will go over limitations and controversies in the field. It will also explore potential new …
Preliminary Analysis Of The Spatial Distribution Of Microplastics Along The Cuyahoga River, Northeast, Ohio, Ella Pitz
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Plastics are nearly ubiquitous throughout modern society, and when left in the natural environment, they degrade into microplastics. Microplastics are particles that range in diameter from 5 millimeters down to nanometers, and microplastics pose many potential environmental and health risks due to their small size and ease of ingestion. While the study of microplastics in the environment has become more common over the past ten years, microplastic concentrations remain unexplored in many regions throughout the country. Here I present a method for separating microplastics from organic matter and clastic sediment as well as preliminary measurements of microplastic concentrations in sediment …

Monomeric And Dimeric Metal Complexes Of A New Tridentate Azole-Isoindoline-Urea Ligand, Ben Hudak
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
1,3-Diiminoisoindoline (DII) compounds have been found to be novel materials for both metal binding and chromophore applications. In this work, I am investigating the next synthetic step in developing pyrazole- and indazole-DII compounds. These compounds stem from the reaction of the unsubstituted imine of the pyrazole- or indazole-DII adduct with an isocyanate. These DII compounds, DII-pyrazolePhNCO, DII-pyrazolenapthylNCO, DII-indazolePhNCO, DII-indazolenapthylNCO, DII-pyrazoleptolylNCO, and DII-indazoleptolylNCO were prepared using ethanol as the solvent and heat. Metal acetates were then reacted with the ligands using DMF and heat. The acetate salts included copper (II) and nickel(II). Some distinctive hydrogen bonding interactions were observed in the …
Identification Of Modified Polymer End Groups For Correlations To Physical Properties, Tj Sacco
Identification Of Modified Polymer End Groups For Correlations To Physical Properties, Tj Sacco
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Plastic has become the primary material for containers in both industrial and commercial fields. Plastics are the optimal choice since they have many physical properties that make them ideal candidates: durability, heat resistance, chemical stability, as well as their inexpensive production cost. Nowadays, the desire for more versatile plastics with strength, flexibility, hydrophobicity, and biodegradability has grown; however, concerns for plastic use have started to rise as well. The overuse of plastics poses a threat to the environment and people’s health: plastics are hard to break down completely which results in the formation of micro(nano)plastics (MNPs). In attempts to circumvent …
Mathematical Model Of Graphene, Douglas M. Sanor
Mathematical Model Of Graphene, Douglas M. Sanor
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Graphene, a single-atom-thick layer of carbon arranged in a hexagonal lattice, exhibits exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties that make it a promising material for a wide range of engineering applications. This paper presents a mathematical framework for modeling the mechanical behavior of graphene, with a focus on atomistic-to-continuum approaches. We begin with a onedimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model that represents graphene as a discrete chain of particles interacting with both their nearest neighbors through harmonic spring potentials and an underlying substrate through van der Waals forces. Numerical simulations of this discrete model demonstrate the commensurate-toincommensurate phase transition, revealing how geometric mismatch …

Computer-Aided Molecular Design To Identify More Environmentally Friendly Pfas, Melvin M. Keita
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The goal of this project is to inversely design alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using Computer-Aided Molecular Design (CAMD). PFAS, also described as “forever chemicals”, have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s. PFAS can be found in drinking water, food, food packaging, waste sites, and other sources. Exposure to different PFAS can lead to increased risks of some cancers, immune effects, and reproductive effects. Pulling from existing data, this project will use quantitative structure-property relationships (QSPRs) to design PFAS alternatives that possess optimal properties to prevent adsorption into drinking water and other potential sources …

Programming languages play a central role in open-source software ecosystems, yet their adoption, visibility, and influence shift over time as technologies, developer communities, and industry practices evolve. The study aims to investigate long-term trends in programming-language usage on GitHub from 2014 through 2024, focusing on ten major languages that represent diverse domains and ecosystems. Using repository metadata, engagement metrics such as stars and forks, and language-level code statistics measured with cloc, the analysis will examine changes in repository creation, code contribution volume, and popularity. Since popularity remains an unsettled and multidimensional concept, part of this research involves determining how it …
The Nature And Origin Of The Strodes Creek Member Of The Lexington Limestone, Central Kentucky, Claire J. Mendenhall
The Nature And Origin Of The Strodes Creek Member Of The Lexington Limestone, Central Kentucky, Claire J. Mendenhall
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The Strodes Creek Member of the Lexington Limestone is a small, unusual member that is largely known for its beds of fragmented and overturned stromatoporoids. The Strodes Creek Member occurs as two distinct stratigraphic bodies, wholly encompassed by the Millersburg Member, which represents a shallow, open-marine, mixed-clastic-carbonate platform, characterized by thin-bedded to nodular, fossiliferous calcarenites and calcirudites interbedded with shale. In contrast to the Millersburg, the Strodes Creek exhibits a lithologic background of dark, organic-rich, calcareous shales with a westward-thickening section of very irregularly bedded, stromatoporoid-rich, fossiliferous calcisiltites (packstones and wackestones). The calcisiltites are commonly associated with hummocky crossbedding, pinch-and-swell …
Analysis Of Policies And Incentives For The Successful Implementation Of Hydrogen-Fueled Medium-Duty And Heavy-Duty Vehicles In Humboldt County, California, Alka Verma
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The 21st century has seen a significant rise in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with the transportation sector contributing 23% of these emissions. Medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles (MD/HD) are particularly impactful, accounting for over a quarter of transport-related emissions. In Humboldt County, California, transportation represents 53% of total emissions, with MD/HD vehicles being a major contributor. As light-duty vehicles shift to zero-emission alternatives, the MD/HD sector faces unique challenges. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer a promising solution, providing longer range, higher energy density, and quicker refueling compared to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). These features make hydrogen an attractive option for …
Early Successional Response To Stream Daylighting In Redwood National And State Parks, Orick, California, Rylee Rawson
Early Successional Response To Stream Daylighting In Redwood National And State Parks, Orick, California, Rylee Rawson
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In-channel stream restoration projects can act as both disturbance and recovery mechanisms, disrupting existing conditions to reestablish the hydrologic and ecological processes that sustain stream ecosystems. These interventions initiate successional trajectories in which channel form and biological communities reorganize over time. In Redwood National and State Parks (California, USA), the Redwoods Rising initiative restores buried headwater channels by recontouring legacy logging roads and daylighting streams buried by Humboldt crossings. Using the National Park Service Klamath Network wadable stream monitoring protocol, I evaluated nine restored reaches spanning one to five years post-restoration, alongside old-growth reference reaches and available pre-treatment data. I …
