Rockyou2024: What’S Your Password?, Yixuan Zhang

Honors Theses

Passwords remain a critical part of almost every account security system. As a result, password guessing attacks remain one of the most widespread yet profitable attacks possible. Setting a password resistant to attacks is thus an important task for account holders. In this paper, we use the RockYou2024 database, a collection of approximately 10 billion real-world passwords collected from data breaches, to analyze the characteristics of passwords found in real life. We start with basic statistical property analysis, such as length, distribution of digits and symbols, and proceed onto more complicated properties such as frequencies of combinations of characters, entropy …

From Shock To Routine: The Evolving Impact Of Shutdown-Related Sentiment On Stock Markets, Yiran Shao

Honors Theses

To address gaps in existing research, this paper selects two U.S. government shutdown periods, 2018-2019 and 2025, as research samples to explore the effect of policy uncertainty on sentiment. This paper primarily analyzes the following two research questions.

First, what is the correlation between government shutdown-related sentiment during the shutdown period and daily market fluctuations? Specifically, can the sentiment index constructed from shutdown-related news effectively predict the next-day stock return during the event period?

Second, does the market have a learning effect? That is, between 2018-2019 and 2025, has the relationship between shutdown-related emotions and market outcomes weakened, shortened the …

Photo And Spatial Control Of Rna Structures And Functions: Exploring Positional Effects And Photo-Responsiveness Of Azobenzene Modified Nucleotides, Jinxi Du Jan 2026

Photo And Spatial Control Of Rna Structures And Functions: Exploring Positional Effects And Photo-Responsiveness Of Azobenzene Modified Nucleotides, Jinxi Du

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

RNA molecules perform many important biological functions by forming complex three-dimensional structures stabilized by base pairing, tertiary interactions, and metal ion coordination. Because RNA function depends strongly on its structure, methods that allow reversible control of RNA conformation and activity are important for understanding RNA behavior and for potential therapeutic applications. However, achieving reversible and site-specific control of RNA structure, especially at the single-nucleotide level, remains challenging. In this dissertation, I developed and applied azobenzene-modified nucleotides as a chemical tool to enable optical and spatial control of RNA structure and function.

The first part of this dissertation focuses on establishing …

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This study presents a conceptual replication of Moreno’s (Appl Cogn Psychol 21:765–781. 10.1002/acp.1348, 2007) study on the benefits of adhering to the segmentation principle when utilizing multimedia learning objects. Furthermore, this study expands upon the original by taking place in a low-immersive virtual reality environment, allowing for further understanding on the extent to which multimedia principles are still relevant. Both a synchronous and an asynchronous case are presented. Results indicate benefits for both cases in far transfer of learning. Furthermore, synchronous learners indicated a significant reduction in cognitive load and increased overall attitudes towards learning due to segmented instruction.

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Considering both the transformative opportunities and challenges presented by generative AI (GenAI) in academic writing, effectively integrating GenAI into the academic setting becomes a significant need requiring prioritization. Yet, there is limited understanding regarding the nature of interactions between different types of students, what behavioral patterns students exhibit during a student-GenAI interaction (SAI) on a given task, and how these different SAI patterns relate to the actual writing task performance. This study, therefore, aimed to identify SAI patterns of academic writing tasks depending on students’ level of AI literacy and examine the differences in academic writing performance between the identified …

Type 2 (T2) immune–mediated epithelial-driven diseases are characterized by dysregulated immune responses at epithelial barrier surfaces. A key mediator of these diseases is thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), an epithelial cytokine that acts as a regulator of both T2 and non-T2 inflammation. TSLP activates dendritic cells and other immune cells, promoting the release of proinflammatory cytokines, including IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Given its central role in initiating and amplifying T2 inflammation, TSLP has emerged as a promising therapeutic target in multiple epithelial-driven inflammatory diseases. Tezepelumab is a human monoclonal antibody that selectively blocks TSLP from interacting with its receptor complex, thereby …

Heart failure (HF) clinical trials increasingly rely on diverse endpoints beyond mortality, including hospitalizations, imaging, hemodynamic status, biomarkers, functional capacity, and patient-reported outcomes. Although statistically significant differences between treatment groups are commonly reported, interpreting whether these changes are clinically meaningful for individual patients remains challenging. This JACC: Heart Failure position statement proposes a pragmatic framework for defining clinically meaningful within-patient change across commonly used HF outcomes by integrating measurement variability, prognostic associations, and patient-anchored evidence where available. Relative and absolute risk reductions should both inform interpretation of clinical events, while imaging, hemodynamic, biomarker, and functional measures require changes exceeding measurement …

The Impact Of Regional Fishery Management Organization Structure On Collaborative Performance, Evelyn Roozee, Owen Temby, Gordon M. Hickey Jan 2026

The Impact Of Regional Fishery Management Organization Structure On Collaborative Performance, Evelyn Roozee, Owen Temby, Gordon M. Hickey

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Collaboration is integral to understand, plan, coordinate, and implement management measures for fisheries that cross international borders. Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs) are the main arenas for countries to collaborate and make decisions for transboundary fisheries, but these organizations have generally failed to prevent the depletion of some of the world's most valuable fish stocks. It is unclear how the structure and functioning of RFMOs can improve collaborative performance to better manage transboundary fish stocks. Using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, our study analyzes 10 RFMOs to identify the combination of six organizational conditions associated with high and low collaborative performance. …

The Conservation Value Of Silvicultural Systems For Breeding And Post-Fledging Bird Communities In Northeastern North America, Christopher Andrew Liazos Jan 2026

The Conservation Value Of Silvicultural Systems For Breeding And Post-Fledging Bird Communities In Northeastern North America, Christopher Andrew Liazos

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Forest bird community decline in the eastern United States is partly due to the lack of early-and-late-successional forests stemming from historic land use. Silviculture can create underrepresented forest age classes and structures to support avian communities during the breeding and post-fledging periods. In southwestern New Hampshire, we conducted a case study evaluating avian conservation value indices across silvicultural systems. Our goal was to observe how avian conservation value indexes and abundance differed between recently managed and unmanaged stands. We surveyed 215 breeding and 118 post-fledging points across 22 sites using point counts and vegetation surveys. Conservation values in the breeding …

Remembering Right Relations: A Land-Centered Framework For Settler Teacher Transformation, Aimee E. De Ney Jan 2026

Remembering Right Relations: A Land-Centered Framework For Settler Teacher Transformation, Aimee E. De Ney

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Settler colonialism is based in the separation of peoples from Lands and from one another, producing ongoing harm to human and more-than-human communities as evidenced in climate collapse, racialized violence, war, and widening social inequities. These conditions are sustained by ideologies of human supremacy-specifically white, male, Christian human supremacy-that deny personhood to most humans and to all more-than-humans, while enabling the attempted erasure of Indigenous peoples and the nation-state enforcement of anti-Black and anti-Brown racism. Situated on the Lands of the Coast Salish Peoples in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, this multiparadigmatic innovation dissertation develops a Land-centered framework …

Sustainable Justice: A Critical Contemplative Approach To Sustainability In Higher Education, Jessica A. Reneau Jan 2026

Sustainable Justice: A Critical Contemplative Approach To Sustainability In Higher Education, Jessica A. Reneau

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The field of sustainability studies increasingly asks students to confront ecological crises alongside considerations of power, privilege, and unequal environmental harm. This work can be emotionally challenging as well as intellectually complex. Contemplative practices, such as meditation and yoga, may offer meaningful pedagogical support, helping students cultivate the attention, reflection, and emotional capacity needed to stay engaged with justice-centered sustainability learning. Although the use of contemplative pedagogies is growing in higher education, little research has examined how these practices shape justice-orientated learning outcomes in sustainability education. This dissertation addresses that gap by exploring how both student and instructor experience contemplative …

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) governance and behavior have the potential to become more equitable, beginning with a closer examination of what equity entails. Governance and behavior together are the actions manifest from internal dispositions and thoughts that facilitate the process of decision-making, in this case, for equitable NbS. This critical review seeks to (1) address the gap in literature on human development and behavioral dimensions of procedural justice for NbS by further defining process-based equity (PbE), and (2) present a framework of best practices for equitable NbS. This framework, along with a complementary conceptual model, was developed using the Preferred Reporting …

Automation And Autonomy In The Ivf Laboratory: Concepts And Implications For Embryologists, Jacques Cohen, Gerardo Mendizabal-Ruiz, Giles Anthony Palmer, Giuseppe Silvestri, Mina Alikani

EVMS School of Health Professions Faculty Publications

Automation is regarded as the next phase in the evolution of laboratory IVF. Despite technological advances, most laboratory procedures remain operator-dependent, contributing to variability in performance and outcomes. While automation has improved reproducibility and efficiency in many areas of medicine, its adoption in IVF has been slow. This review examines how automation may be integrated into IVF laboratories through a set of conceptual distinctions. Automation refers to the execution of procedural steps by machine-controlled systems, whereas autonomy describes the degree to which such systems can operate without human intervention. This review distinguishes between static automation, which maintains or monitors the …

Evaluation Of A Novel Re-Crosslinkable Preformed Particle Gel For Conformance Control In Ultra-High Temperature Reservoirs, Yanbo Liu, Tao Song, Caleb Kwasi Darko, Thomas P. Schuman, Mingzhen Wei, Baojun Bai

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Preferential fluid flow remains a major challenge in subsurface energy production and gas storage operations, resulting in excessive water production in mature oil fields, reduced heat extraction in geothermal reservoirs, and low sweep and storage efficiency in CO2-EOR projects. Polymer gels are widely used to mitigate high-permeability channels; however, conventional systems exhibit limited plugging efficiency and short lifetimes in ultra-high-temperature reservoirs due to poor thermal stability. This study presents a novel ultra-high-temperature-resistant preformed particle gel (UHT-PPG) developed for conformance control in reservoirs with temperatures of 150–275 °C and severe super-K or channeling problems. The material was evaluated in …

Progression Toward Terminal Oxidation Of Starch Via Hybrid Organic–Enzymatic Bioanode For Renewable Carbohydrate Conversion, Adam Milam, Jose Intano, Shelley D. Minteer Jan 2026

Progression Toward Terminal Oxidation Of Starch Via Hybrid Organic–Enzymatic Bioanode For Renewable Carbohydrate Conversion, Adam Milam, Jose Intano, Shelley D. Minteer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of starch-based biofuel cells is fundamentally limited by inefficient utilization of the fuel's inherent energy density. Sequential oxidation of carbohydrate fuels, such as glucose, the monomeric unit of starch, using minimal catalyst systems has therefore emerged as a promising strategy to improve biofuel cell efficiency. Here, we extend a previously reported three-catalyst, organic–enzymatic glucose oxidation cascade to polymeric carbohydrate fuels by integrating enzymatic starch depolymerization with downstream electrochemical oxidation. To our knowledge, this represents the first demonstration of a defined hybrid organic–enzymatic cascade designed to drive progression of starch-derived glucose equivalents toward terminal oxidation using a minimal catalyst …

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: I: Fixed Time Existence, James Glimm, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: I: Fixed Time Existence, James Glimm, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The convergence of renormalized perturbation theory to all finite orders is defined and shown to be valid for the fixed time perturbation theory of a pure Yang-Mills field.

Two pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production.

On-Device Artificial Intelligence Solutions With Applications To Smart Environments, Fabrizio De Vita, Dario Bruneo, Sajal K. Das Jan 2026

On-Device Artificial Intelligence Solutions With Applications To Smart Environments, Fabrizio De Vita, Dario Bruneo, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the increasing availability of computational power have accelerated the diffusion of Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPSs), enabling smart applications with reasoning capabilities. However, the limited resources of embedded and Edge devices significantly constrain the complexity of deep learning models that can be effectively deployed. Traditional approaches rely on cloud-based training and edge-only inference, a paradigm that becomes inadequate when low latency, privacy, security, and high customization are required. In this context, On-device AI is emerging as a new paradigm in which both training and inference are performed directly on the device, avoiding data transfer …

Fairrfl: Fair And Robust Federated Learning In The Presence Of Selfish Clients, Andrea Augello, Ashish Gupta, Giuseppe Lo Re, Sajal K. Das Jan 2026

Fairrfl: Fair And Robust Federated Learning In The Presence Of Selfish Clients, Andrea Augello, Ashish Gupta, Giuseppe Lo Re, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Federated Learning (FL) is a paradigm that enables collaborative machine learning without disclosing the local data of the participants. However, in real-world FL deployment scenarios, some unscrupolous clients may alter the training process to skew the global model towards their local optimum, unfairly prioritizing their data distribution. Their influence can degrade overall model performance for normal clients and reduce fairness in the system. We call this novel category of misbehaving clients 'selfish'. This work proposes a Fair and Robust strategy for aggregation in the Federated Learning (FL) server to mitigate the effect of Selfish clients (FairRFL). FairRFL incorporates a novel …

Qura: Reinforcement Learning Based Routing For Quantum Networks, Tasdiqul Islam, Engin Arslan, Md Arifuzzaman Jan 2026

Qura: Reinforcement Learning Based Routing For Quantum Networks, Tasdiqul Islam, Engin Arslan, Md Arifuzzaman

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quantum routing deals with identifying a set of quantum repeaters to use to create entanglement between distant endpoints. Previous approaches proposed shortest-path and linear programming methods to find a solution to this problem. While the shortest path approach results in suboptimal performance, linear programming takes too long to find a solution as the network size and constraints increase. In this paper, we apply Deep Q-Reinforcement Learning (DQRL) to optimize routing in quantum networks both in terms of execution time and performance. The proposed Quantum Routing Algorithm (QuRA) first chooses which request to schedule among all requests. It then determines which …
