Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a powerful analytical technique, offering molecular fingerprint specificity and ultrasensitive detection of cardiac biomarkers. Recent advances in plasmonic nanostructures, surface functionalization strategies, and flexible sensing platforms have significantly improved the analytical performance of SERS-based biosensors. In parallel, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning has enabled robust interpretation of complex spectral datasets, facilitating automated biomarker classification and improved diagnostic accuracy in heterogeneous biological environments. The liver’s highly structured vascular microarchitecture governs blood perfusion, metabolic zonation, and the spatial distribution of xenobiotic toxicity. Current computational models of hepatic drug metabolism often oversimplify this geometry, limiting their ability to capture realistic flow dynamics and cellular injury patterns. This study develops a multiscale computational framework to predict acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity using image-derived, three-dimensional hepatic lobule geometries. The model integrates computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a mechanistic cellular injury module to simulate the interplay between perfusion, metabolism, and hepatocellular viability.

Electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition has emerged as a critical component of affective computing and clinical neuroscience. Existing approaches to this problem primarily reduce the multi-dimensional EEG time series to a single averaged feature vector, thereby discarding the temporal structure of the emotional response. The present work addresses three identified gaps in the literature: the absence of temporal interpretability, the uniform use of frequency bands, and the use of single-scale temporal feature extraction. Federal appellate courts are the final arbiters in many cases, yet systematic machine learning analysis across all twelve circuits remains largely absent from the computational law literature. With courts of appeals deciding tens of thousands of cases annually and the Supreme Court reviewing only a fraction, understanding what predicts reversal outcomes has both theoretical importance and practical consequences for litigants, attorneys, and judicial administrators. This study addresses that gap using eleven years of federal appellate decisions from the Federal Judicial Center’s Integrated Database. This thesis presents a proof-of-concept communication system in which two local large language model endpoints communicate across a simulated analog telephone line using legacy USB modems. The project combines modem voice mode, modem data mode, local speech processing, and structured machine messaging into a single staged session. During the voice phase, one endpoint places a call, the other answers, speech generated by a locally hosted LLaMA-family model is synthesized with Piper, transmitted through the modem voice path, captured on the remote side, and transcribed with Faster-Whisper to drive the next response. Silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely studied as fluorescent nanomaterials for sensing applications. In this thesis, we developed two different nanomaterials, SiQDs and CQDs, and investigated their catalytic activities and applied them for the detection of hydrogen peroxide and glucose. In the first project, Co2+-mediated SiQDs were synthesized through a hydrothermal method. The obtained nanoparticles showed obvious peroxidase-like activity toward the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 under acidic conditions. It is well known that publications with collaborators from external institutions increase citations. This effect scales with spatial distance. There are also many barriers to long-distance collaborations, including linguistic differences, funding constraints, and the incremental costs of remote collaboration. This paper uses the Gulf of Mexico as a case study to examine long-distance research collaboration because it consists of three countries with diverse development levels and two prominent diplomatic languages, within a singular regional ecosystem of tremendous natural and economic value. Social vulnerability to flooding is shaped by intersectional social marginalization, yet most quantitative assessments employ indicators of single populations. This study applies spatial machine learning to examine how the intersectional social vulnerability indicators of poverty-race, poverty-housing tenure, and race-housing tenure compare with traditional discrete indicators of single populations in predicting flood exposure in California. Using geographically weighted random forests and partial dependence plots, we model spatial heterogeneity and non-linear relationships between social vulnerability and exposure. We quantified flood exposure using a population-adjusted measure derived from building footprints and modeled 500-year fluvial and pluvial flood hazard. The results reveal distinct explanatory …

The introduction of a heteroatom into the spirocyclic framework can improve its electronic, photophysical, and structural properties. Ruthenium( II) coordination complexes have many appealing properties as prodrugs, but can suffer from poor aqueous solubility and short circulation times, drastically decreasing efficiency in vivo. Nanoformulations using a variety of carriers, such as inclusion in polymers/lipids or adsorption on inorganic nanoparticles have been applied to overcome this limitation, but unfortunately, these approaches raise additional concerns regarding the fate of the carriers, with potential long-term toxicity and accumulation in vital organs. Objectives: Characterize lignin-derived compounds from the hurd of 10 fiber/grain Cannabis sativa L. cultivars and investigate the antimicrobial activity of select compounds on the wasteful ruminant bacterium, Acetoanaerobium sticklandii SR.   Methods: Hurd was processed using an aqueous ethanol solvent system and analyzed via GC-MS to identify and characterize lignin derivatives. Antimicrobial activity of the hurd and three monomers was assessed using solid (hurd) and liquid medium (monomers) bioassays against SR.   Results: 27 compounds were identified, most as monomers but a few were dimers, ethylated derivatives, and organic acids. The photophysics of organic semiconductors impacts their efficiency in optoelectronic devices where exciton transitions, including singlet fission, intersystem crossing and the formation of charge transfer states influence the ability to convert between bright and dark states and to dissociate into free charges. Unfortunately, photodegradation and spurious signals often confound the results of optical studies, especially of important triplet states. Here four asymmetric cyclopentannulated acenes are synthesized and studied. Diatoms are important primary producers, accounting for most of the oceanic production and carbon export relative to other photosynthetic eukaryotes. There are important differences among diatom species that enable them to proliferate in different environments. Some have nutrient storage capabilities or lower nutrient quotas suited for oligotrophic oceans. Bloom-forming diatoms are typically found in nutrient-rich coastal waters where they respond quickly to nutrient pulses and can influence biogeochemical cycling in the ocean after blooms. In the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), marine plankton dynamics are tightly linked to the interannual variability in environmental conditions, including phenological shifts in sea-ice seasonality. To explore these linkages, we use a 1-dimensional vertical ocean-ice-ecosystem model (KPP-Eco-Ice, or KEI) that simulates physical and ecosystem conditions at a continental shelf mooring location in the Palmer Long Term Ecological Research program sampling grid. KEI allows for year-round examination of the ecosystem in a region where in situ observations on the shelf are limited to January. Recent studies have shown that the Indian Ocean is warming significantly, but how this warming impacts primary production is largely unresolved due to a relative lack of depth-resolved biological observations. In this study, we have used Biogeochemical-Argo data from 2013 to 2022, comprising over 9,000 individual profiles, to examine regional patterns and trends in depth-integrated chlorophyll, depth-integrated net primary production and stratification in the northern and Equatorial Indian Ocean. Our analysis shows that water column stratification is increasing in the majority of the study area, with the highest rate of increase observed in the western Bay of Bengal. At the …

Macrophytes are foundation species whose use as nature-based solution (NbS) in aquatic ecosystems can help reduce climate change impacts while mitigating biodiversity loss. The discrepancy in research and application of macrophytes as NbS across inland and marine coastal ecosystems is an opportunity to expand the concept and learn from different approaches. Large blooms of the diazotrophic cyanobacteria, Trichodesmium, have been re-ported along the north coast of Australia and are readily evident in remote sensing images. During a research cruise in November 1999, we sampled from Townsville to Broome, examined Trichodesmium population densities and their rates of carbon and N₂ fixation alongside microscopy-based cell counts of them and other cyanobacte-rial diazotrophs. Additionally, we also enumerated the picophytoplankton community using flow-cytometry, measured bulk chlorophyll concentrations, carbon and N₂ fixation rates, and water column hydrography, enabling comparison of diazotrophic and picophytoplankton functional groups across the system. Environmental contaminants such as neonicotinoids and bisphenols are increasingly detected at ultratrace concentrations in environmental and consumer matrices, necessitating sensitive and efficient analytical methodologies. This dissertation presents the development, validation, and application of liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) methods coupled with simplified sample preparation techniques. In Chapter 2, a direct aqueous injection (DAI) LC–MS/MS method was developed for the analysis of five neonicotinoids in surface water, eliminating extensive sample preparation. The method demonstrated strong linearity (R² = 0.993–0.998), with limits of detection (LOD) ranging from 0.5 to 4 ng/L and lower limits of quantification (LLOQ) of 10–50 ng/L. Accuracy (80–120%) …

Research on Nash equilibrium existence for infinite games has grown into a patchwork of technical preconditions and counterexamples. This paper presents a unified program in equilibrium theory by revising the predominant model of mixed strategies based on countable additivity. A game is specified by a nonempty set of players and, for each player, a nonempty action set and a bounded von Neumann-Morgenstern utility function. Every such game is shown to admit a Nash equilibrium in finitely additive mixed strategies. This thesis presents a systematic empirical evaluation of quantum machine learning performance under noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era constraints. Through 670 controlled experiments, it evaluated quantum kernel support vector machines and variational quantum classifiers against classical baselines on MNIST binary and multiclass classification tasks with systematic variation of problem difficulty, feature dimensionality (4, 8 qubits), and training set size (n ∈{100, 250, 400, 500, 2000, 4000}). Statistical rigor was ensured through five random seeds per condition and comprehensive significance testing. This dissertation looks at the ongoing issue of tiny airborne particles created during medical and dental procedures and evaluates ways to reduce the risk of exposure for healthcare workers and patients to these particles. The first study focuses on the size, how long particles stay in the air, and how far they travel from common medical procedures that create aerosols, showing that tiny particles (less than 5 µm) can stay in the air long enough to escape basic droplet controls. Radio pulsars are highly magnetized, rapidly rotating neutron stars which emit beams of radio waves from their magnetic poles. Their incredible rotational stability allows for their use in a variety of high-energy astrophysical studies, though the details of their internal structure and emission mechanisms are still unknown. We use observations of a cross-section of the pulsar population in order to investigate the nature of their evolution, their emission properties, and their environments.

Knowledge of gypsum textures and the processes that yield them is important for interpreting the history of environments, climates, and life on Earth. This is because gypsum textures are products of specific environmental, microbiological, and diagenetic processes, and because gypsum is relatively common in the Earth’s sedimentary record. Despite this significance, gypsum is relatively understudied. The fundamental goal of this dissertation is to advance our understanding of gypsum textures by presenting detailed, petrography-based investigations of Permo-Triassic gypsum from the continental interior of Pangea.

In this work, we investigate ion heating in two plasma systems (helicon plasmas and flux rope plasmas) using the PHAse Space MApping (PHASMA) experiment. Our studies rely on high-resolution laser diagnostics, specifically laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), to measure ion velocity distribution functions (IVDFs). The temperature and bulk flow of each species are inferred from their respective VDFs. This dissertation is organized into three main parts: the study of ion heating in helicon plasmas, pulsed LIF modeling and diagnostic development, and the study of ion heating in flux rope plasmas. Flow regime identification in co-current upward gas-liquid flow through annular conduits remains a significant challenge in petroleum engineering, with major safety and operational implications. It is also important across industries involving the transport of multiphase fluids. Misidentifying flow regimes can introduce major operational risk, yet regime boundaries in annular gas-liquid flow are often visually complex and context dependent.
