Painting Liberation: A Visual Ontology Of The Interplay Of Mind And Consciousness In Book Four Of The Yoga Sūtras, Melissa Townsend

This presentation explores how artistic practice can illuminate philosophical questions about the nature of mind, consciousness, and liberation as articulated in Book Four of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. Through a series of paintings that visually translate these sūtras, I propose that art offers a unique, experiential means of engaging with the complex relationship between citta (mind) and puruṣa (consciousness).

The paintings function as a form of “visual ontology,” inviting viewers to engage with abstract philosophical concepts in a sensory, tangible way. By depicting the interplay between the mutable processes of the mind and the unchanging awareness of consciousness, these …

In the runner locating variation of cops and robbers on a graph, a chaser attempts to locate an invisible runner by probing a single vertex v each turn, from which the chaser learns the runner’s distance. The runner is then permitted to stay at his current vertex or move to an adjacent vertex other than v. A graph is locatable if the chaser is able to locate the runner in a finite number of turns, and the location number of a graph is the minimum number of turns necessary to determine the runner’s location regardless of the runner’s evasion strategy. …

This study investigates: 1) the synthesis and reactivity of the mono- substituted systems, [κ²-(t-bipy)Ru(NCMe)2(Ph)(PR3)][BArF'] supported by different ancillary ligands PR3 = (P(OCH3)3 and P(CH3)3) and a single bidentate ligand, 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridine (t-bipy), and 2) UV/heat formation of di-PR3 and tri-PR3 systems supported by a single bidentate ligand to better understand the mechanism of styrene production. Ensemble methods are widely used to approximate solutions for the Navier-Stokes Equations to account for inherent uncertainties within the system. This work goes about the numerical analysis and efficiency assessment of a fully discretized Ensemble Eddy Viscosity (EEV) model for the incompressible Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations. The model is efficient due to the use of ensemble methods. Through a single coefficient matrix for $J$ realizations, we reduce computational cost and thereby ensure computational efficiency. Various signaling mechanisms contribute to a cancers cell’s ability to survive through the stressors of tumorigenesis. Canonically, when a cell is exposed to irreversible stress, the induction to apoptosis is regulated by the Bcl-2 family of apoptotic regulators. However, to accommodate for the stressors of tumor progression, many solid tumors over express one of the pro-survival proteins (e.g., BCL2, BCLxL, MCL1) allowing for persistent growth without the induction to cell death. Gas stations and head shops are a seemingly safe and legal marketplace for drug purchase. However, although marketed as dietary supplements or cognitive enhancers, the products sold there have been known to contain psychoactive substances which may be mislabeled or actually contain regulated substances. This study investigates the composition of such products, specifically those labeled as kratom and non-kratom Mitragyna species using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and those labeled as phenibut using GC-MS and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has set targets to end the HIV epidemic by improving HIV diagnosis, treatment, and viral suppression to reduce new infections and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV (PLHIV), including pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV (PPWH). This study examines the impact of two key AI modalities–freedom of choice (FoC) and social proof (SP)–on public attitudes toward AI, focusing on cultural differences between UK and Arab participants. FoC refers to the option of selecting a non-AI, possibly human, alternative, while SP means knowing that others have used AI without issues. Four scenarios were designed, combining the presence or absence of these modalities. The context was a customer service chatbot for a telecommunications company, familiar to all participants. This session will discuss the project Computer Science for Middle School and the associated findings. This Virginia Department of Education funded project provides computer science Professional Development opportunities for in-service teachers, located in Southeastern Virginia, who instruct students in middle school grades 6- 8. Participating teachers learn to integrate computer science standards into core and elective content through online, asynchronous microcredentials and in-person Summer Workshops. The presentation will include project findings and next steps including teacher efficacy for implementing the computer science standards before and after completing the microcredentials and their students’ attitudes about computer science.

This study investigated how racial equity trainers envision racially equitable residential environmental education (REE). While addressing racial inequities has been central to environmental scholarship, equity detours undergirded by systemic power structures continue to pose significant barriers in addressing inequities in practice. The research explored the question: “How do racial equity trainers envision racially equitable residential environmental education?” Using constructivist grounded theory and drawing on portraiture’s “search for goodness,” the study conducted 1-hour virtual interviews with six racial equity trainers, employing iterative coding through the constant comparative method. Wood turtles occupy cold, low-gradient riverine habitat throughout the northeastern United State and southeastern Canada. Stream alterations, such as dams, channel straightening, and floodplain development have diminished the natural hydrologic and sedimentation regimes that result in complex channel and floodplain geomorphology. Due to their unique species diversity and vulnerability, alpine snowbed communities have the potential to serve as early detection or ‘canary’ communities that can inform scientific understanding of the timing and physical manifestation of a changing alpine ecosystem. If A is a Cohen–Macaulay ring, H.-B. Foxby proved in 1974 that the A-module K A is q-torsionfree if and only if the ring A is q-Gorenstein. Unplanned hospital readmissions represent a significant challenge for healthcare systems, contributing to substantial financial burdens and highlighting gaps in patient care coordination. In the U.S., approximately 20% of Medicare beneficiaries are readmitted within 30 days, costing billions annually. Social determinants of health, such as income, housing stability, and social support, account for up to 80% of health outcomes, yet their integration into predictive models remains underexplored. "Organofluorine chemistry plays a critical role in synthetic chemistry due to the unique properties of fluorine. However, the S-trifluoromethylation of thiols remains underexplored, with existing methods often relying on toxic and expensive organometallic catalysts. Given the advantages of S-trifluoromethylated compounds, including enhanced pharmacological activity and improved metabolic stability, we developed a green and cost-effective method for the synthesis of S-CF3 compounds using diacetyl as the organic catalyst and Langloi's reagent as the trifluoromethylating reagent. This reaction, which proceeds under mild conditions using visible light photoredox catalysis, works across various substrate scopes, including aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic thiols.

"We present a family of divalent cationic bipodal and tripodal M(II) reagents (M = Mn, Fe, Co) supported by superbasic tetramethyl-guanidinyl (TMG) residue framework with applications towards C─N bond construction methodologies. These cationic reagents possess unique characteristics since their enhanced Lewis acidity facilitates in situ elaboration of the primary nitrene-transfer product (aziridine). Indeed, further aziridine-ring opening and cycloaddition of several dipolarophiles (nitriles, alkenes, ketones) permits the three-component synthesis of valuable five-membered N-heterocycles, commonly found in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

"The Permian-Triassic period represents a significant but insufficiently understood tectonic transition stage in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) between the Paleozoic continental amalgamation and Cenozoic orogenic reactivation. This study integrates fieldwork, petrographic, and detrital zircon geochronological data to document the trend of depositional environments, framework grain compositions, and dates of detrital zircon grains of the uppermost Carboniferous–Lower Triassic sandstones from three study areas in Bogda Mountains, the greater Turpan-Junggar basin, NW China, to decipher the spatial and temporal changes in the provenance lithology and area and reconstruct the unroofing history of the southern CAOB.

This research develops and refines the Split Inversion Pulse and Recovery (SIP R) methodology for spin-lattice relaxation (T₁) measurements in NMR spectroscopy. SIP R introduces a two-scan difference technique using a split inversion pulse sequence, where the 180° pulse is split into two 90° pulses phase-shifted with respect to each other. This approach simplifies data fitting, requiring only two parameters to extract T₁ values, compared to the traditional inversion-recovery method, which needs three. The SIP-R-DS and SIP-R-S adaptations extend this framework by incorporating selective NMR resonance excitations, enhancing its applicability to cross-polarization experiments and enabling unobstructed NOE measurements.
