Towards Digital Twins For Optimizing Metrics In Distributed Storage Systems - A Review, May Itani, Layal Abu Daher, Ahmad Hammoud

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

With the exponential data growth, there is a crucial need for highly available, scalable, reliable, and cost-effective Distributed Storage Systems (DSSs). To ensure such efficient and fault tolerant systems, replication and erasure coding techniques are typically used in traditional DSSs. However, these systems are prone to failure and require different failure prevention and recovery algorithms. Failure recovery of DSS and data reconstruction techniques take into consideration different performance metrics optimization in the recovery process. In this paper, DSS performance metrics are introduced. Several recent papers related to adopting erasure coding in DSSs are surveyed together with highlighting related performance metrics …

Modeling The Population Dynamics And Movement Of Zebra Mussels, Alexanderia Lacy, Yu Jin, David Strayer, Suzanne Lenhart

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Zebra mussels have caused significant damage in many lakes and rivers. By using a hybrid population model with discrete-time equations and ordinary differential equations, we represent the zebra mussel’s life cycle, growth, and population movement. The dynamics of the larvae (unsettled and settled larvae) are represented during the summer months in a system of two ordinary differential equations, while the juvenile, small adult, and large adult stages are represented by a discrete model with yearly time steps. The goal is to investigate the effects of zebra mussel movement between three different spatial locations and possible control measures. Zebra mussel data …

Genome-Wide Search Algorithms For Identifying Dynamic Gene Co-Expression Via Bayesian Variable Selection, Wenda Zhang, Zichen Ma, Lianming Wang, Daping Fan, Yen Yi Ho

Faculty Publications

A wealth of gene expression data generated by high-throughput techniques provides exciting opportunities for studying gene-gene interactions systematically. Gene-gene interactions in a biological system are tightly regulated and are often highly dynamic. The interactions can change flexibly under various internal cellular signals or external stimuli. Previous studies have developed statistical methods to examine these dynamic changes in gene-gene interactions. However, due to the massive number of possible gene combinations that need to be considered in a typical genomic dataset, intensive computation is a common challenge for exploring gene-gene interactions. On the other hand, oftentimes only a small proportion of gene …
