Sports have been extensively studied for their impact on people's emotional well-being, with research revealing that they have the ability to reduce anxiety and unhappiness while boosting positive emotions1. among all sports, soccer stands out as the most popular and controversial2, eliciting a wide range of emotional reactions from fans, players, officials, and spectators, particularly on social media. While sentiment classifications such as positive, negative, and neutral have been extensively studied, low-level emotions, which refer to more specific and granular emotional states beyond the three basic categories, have yet to be given much attention. This study scraped over 300,000 tweets …

As one of the most widely used technology to ameliorate the reservoir's heterogeneity, polymer gels have been applied for more than 60 years. However, how to plug fractured reservoirs with significant abnormal features, high temperature and high salinity, especially the divalent cations, is still a challenging target. This work systematically evaluated a novel salt-resistant re-crosslinkable preformed particle gel (SR-RPPG) designed for fractured reservoirs with excellent salt resistance (up to 5 % CaCl2). We evaluated the swelling kinetics, thermal stability and plugging efficiency of this SR-RPPG. We assessed the swelling kinetic and re-crosslinking behavior of the SR-RPPG through the …

This study aims to use data provided by the Virginia Department of Public Health to illustrate the changes in trends of the total cases in COVID-19 since they were first recorded in the state. Each of the 93 counties in the state has its COVID-19 dashboard to help inform decision makers and the public of spatial and temporal counts of total cases. Our analysis shows the differences in the relative spread between the counties and compares the evolution in time using Bayesian conditional autoregressive framework. The models are built under the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and Moran spatial correlations. …

Not Your Typical Tower Of Sauron, John Adam Jan 2023

Not Your Typical Tower Of Sauron, John Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The picture is of the tapering Chester Shot Tower, located in Chester, England. It was built in 1799 for the manufacture of lead shot for use in the Napoleonic Wars. Molten lead was poured through a sieve at the top of the tower, with the tiny droplets forming perfect spheres during the fall; these were then cooled in a vat of water at the base. This process was less labor intensive than an earlier method using molds. It is the oldest of the three remaining shot towers in the UK.

Question 1: Using the parked van at the base, estimate …

Jet Noise Reduction: A Fresh Start, Christopher K. Tam, Fang Q. Hu Jan 2023

Jet Noise Reduction: A Fresh Start, Christopher K. Tam, Fang Q. Hu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Attempts to reduce jet noise began some 70 years ago. In the literature, there have been many publications written on this topic. By now, it is common knowledge that jet noise consists of a number of components. They possess different spectral and radiation characteristics and are generated by different mechanisms. It appears then that one may aim at the suppression of the noise of a single component instead of trying to reduce jet noise overall. The objective of the present project is to reduce large turbulence structures noise. It is the most dominant noise component radiating in the downstream direction. …

A Threshold Linear Mixed Model (TLMM) has been developed to identify specific thresholds based on wastewater SARS-CoV-2 viral concentrations, which reflect COVID-19 cases. The thresholds can guide decisions regarding public health responses and prevention measures. To assess the practical application of TLMM, a simple simulation was conducted using a sample size of 100 and 500 replications. The simulation allowed for comparing parameter estimators by assessing bias and standard deviation and the root of the mean square error. The model and estimation procedures were applied to reported wastewater and clinic data to test its application for real-world scenarios. Our results demonstrated …

Rhabdomyolysis And Hypothyroidism In A Collegiate Hammer Thrower: A Disablement Model Case Study, S. Andrew Cage, Robert Michael Galbraith, Rebecca Peebles, Payton Williams, Brandon Warner

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

The purpose of this disablement model case report was to detail the case of a patient suffering from rhabdomyolysis and hypothyroidism. Despite swelling, cramping, and loss of range of motion at the wrists, hands, and fingers, the patient did not seek physician evaluation until their athletic trainer encouraged them. While hypothyroidism is a relatively common condition, there has been little literature published that associate hypothyroidism with rhabdomyolysis. In this case, the patient reported to the athletic training staff reporting swelling, cramping, and loss of range of motion at the wrists, hands, and fingers. After evaluation by the team physician and …

Using Blockchain For Enabling Transparent, Traceable, And Trusted University Ranking Systems, Ammar Battah, Khaled Salah, Raja Jayaraman, Ibrar Yaqoob, Ashraf Khalil

All Works

Ranking systems have proven to improve the quality of education and help build the reputation of academic institutions. Each of the current academic ranking systems is based on different methodologies, criteria, and standards of measurement. Academic and employer reputations are subjective indicators of some rankings determined through surveying that is neither transparent nor traceable. The current academic ranking systems fall short of providing transparency and traceability features for both subjective and objective indicators that are used to calculate the ranking. Also, the ranking systems are managed and controlled in a centralized manner by specific entities. This raises concerns about fairness …

Policy Innovation As The Cornerstone Of Energy Transition: An Analysis Of Energy Policy In The Shipping Economy And Operations, Peyman Ghaforian Masodzadeh

World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations

Despite being excluded from most climate change treaties, the maritime sector is expected to manage and reduce carbon emissions in line with global decarbonization goals. Although the IMO's effort has been evident by the adoption of energy regulations and the GHG strategy during the past decade, however, the effectiveness and adequacy of the adopted energy policy remain questionable. This thesis aims to identify problems associated with energy policy in the shipping industry and propose appropriate solutions. Initially, this study was premised on the hypothesis that “energy policy in the shipping industry involves problems associated with policy design, policy implementation, and …

Towards A Prototype Paleo-Detector For Supernova Neutrino And Dark Matter Detection, Emilie Marie Lavoie-Ingram

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using ancient minerals as paleo-detectors is a proposed experimental technique expected to transform supernova neutrino and dark matter detection. In this technique, minerals are processed and closely analyzed for nanometer scale damage track remnants from nuclear recoils caused by supernova neutrinos and possibly dark matter. These damage tracks present the opportunity to directly detect and characterize the core-collapse supernova rate of the Milky Way Galaxy as well as the presence of dark matter. Current literature presents theoretical estimates for these potential tracks, however, there is little research investigating the experimental feasibility of this technique. At the University of North Florida, …

Fortifying The Seams Of Software Systems, Hong Jin Kang Jan 2023

Fortifying The Seams Of Software Systems, Hong Jin Kang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

A seam in software is a place where two components within a software system meet. There are more seams in software now than ever before as modern software systems rely extensively on third-party software components, e.g., libraries. Due to the increasing complexity of software systems, understanding and improving the reliability of these components and their use is crucial. While the use of software components eases the development process, it also introduces challenges due to the interaction between the components.

This dissertation tackles problems associated with software reliability when using third-party software components. Developers write programs that interact with libraries through …

The synthesis, densification behavior, and crystallographic site occupancy were investigated for four different spinel-based ceramics, including a high-entropy spinel (Co0.2Cu0.2Mg0.2Ni0.2 Zn0.2)Al2O4. Each composition was reacted to form a single phase, but analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns revealed differences in cation site occupancy with the high-entropy spinel being nearly fully normal. Densification behavior was investigated and showed that fully dense ceramics could be produced by hot pressing at temperatures as low as 1375°C for all compositions. Vickers' hardness values were at least 10 GPa for all compositions. The …

Re-Assembling Polymer Particle Package For Conformance Control And Fluid Loss Control, Jingyang Pu, Baojun Bai, Thomas P. Schuman

Patents

This invention is broadly concerned with compositions and processes for oilfield applications. More specifically, this invention relates to novel polymer constructed packages that, when pumped into a petroleum well, provide tunable characteristics of transformation and delayed self-assembly with each other under reservoir conditions to yield strong, elastic, bulk gel materials. The compositions comprise a polymer, assembling agents, and optional additives used for the re-assembly stage are uniformly-distributed within the initial gel particles. The polymer particle packages absorb water and swell upon exposure to water, thus exposing the "assembling agents" that enable re-assembly. Both swelling and re-assembly are proportionally controlled via …

Electromagnetic Radiation From A Spherical Static Current Source Coupled To Harmonic Axion Field, Railing Chang, Huai-Yi Xie, P. T. Leung

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The electromagnetic fields generated from a static current source on a spherical surface are calculated in the framework of axion electrodynamics to first order in the coupling parameter. Comparisons of the results are made with reference to various results obtained in conventional Maxwell electrodynamics, as well as previous results obtained for point magnetic dipole source coupled to harmonic axion fields. Distinct features from the results so obtained are highlighted for possible experimental probing of the axions via electromagnetic interactions. In particular, electromagnetic radiation from sources with strong magnetic field is studied which may enable the detection of a cosmic …

Charging Of Irregularly-Shaped Dust Grains Near Surfaces In Space, David Lund, Xiaoming He, Daoru Han

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents fully kinetic numerical investigation of the charging of dust grains in low temperature collision less plasmas (stationary) and collision less, cold-ion thermal-electron drifting plasmas. the Parallel Immersed-Finite-Element Particle-in-Cell (PIFE-PIC) code is utilized to self-consistently resolve the plasma environment and charging of immersed materials. This model explicitly includes the materials property (dielectric constant) of dust grains. Effects of materials property, inter-dust distance, and plasma conditions (stationery and drifting) will be investigated for both single-dust and multi-dust configurations.

Waves propagate diffusively through disordered media, such as biological tissue, clouds, and paint, due to random scattering. Recent advances in optical wavefront shaping techniques have enabled controlling coherent light propagation in multiple-scattering samples. We overcome wave diffusion to deliver optical energy into a target region of arbitrary size and shape anywhere inside a strong-scattering system. This is particularly important for applications such as photoacoustic microscopy and optogenetics, where light needs to be deposited deep into biological tissue. For monochromatic light, we previously introduced the deposition matrix (DM) Z(ω), which maps its input wavefront to the field distribution in the target …

Scattering-Angle Dependence Of Doubly Differential Cross Sections For Ionization In Proton Collisions With Molecular Hydrogen, C. T. Plowman, K. H. Spicer, Michael Schulz, A. S. Kadyrov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The wave-packet convergent close-coupling (WP-CCC) approach is applied to calculate the energy spectrum of electrons ejected in p+H2 collisions as a function of the scattering angle of the projectile. The calculations are performed for projectile energies of 75, 100, and 200 keV. At these incident energies there are many competing reaction channels that play an essential role in the collision dynamics. The target is modeled as an orientationally averaged effective one-electron system. The results are compared with available perturbative calculations and experimental data. Good agreement between the WP-CCC results and experimental data is found for small emission energies, especially when …

The latest High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) point-like source catalog up to 56 TeV reported the detection of two sources in the region of the Galactic plane at galactic longitude 52° < ℓ < 55°, 3HWC J1930+188 and 3HWC J1928+178. The first one is associated with a known TeV source, the supernova remnant SNR G054.1+00.3. It was discovered by one of the currently operating Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT), the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS), detected by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S), and identified as a composite SNR. However, the source 3HWC J1928+178, discovered by HAWC and coincident with the pulsar PSR J1928+1746, was not detected by any IACT despite their long exposure on the region, until a recent new analysis of H.E.S.S. data was able to confirm it. Moreover, no X-ray counterpart has been detected from this pulsar. We present a multicomponent fit of this region using the latest HAWC data. This reveals an additional new source, HAWC J1932+192, which is potentially associated with the pulsar PSR J1932+1916, whose γ-ray emission could come from the acceleration of particles in its pulsar wind nebula. In the case of 3HWC J1928+178, several possible explanations are explored, in an attempt to unveil the origins of the very-high-energy γ-ray emission.
