Tio2 Coated Three-Dimensional Hierarchically Ordered Porous Sulfur Electrode For The Lithium/Sulfur Rechargeable Batteries, Hongqiang Wang, Sha Li, Dan Li, Zhixin Chen, Hua-Kun Liu, Zaiping Guo

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically ordered mesoporous carbon-sulfur composite slice coated with a thin TiO2 layer has been synthesized by a low-cost process and investigated as a cathode for the lithium-sulfur batteries. The TiO2 coated carbon sulfur composite thin slice works as a binder-free cathode without any current collectors for lithium-sulfur batteries. The hierarchical architecture provides a 3D conductive network for electron transfer, open channels for ion diffusion and strong confinement of soluble polysulfides. Meanwhile, TiO2 (titanium dioxide) coating layer could further effectively prevent the dissolution of polysulfides and also improve the strength of the entire electrode, thereby enhancing the electrochemical …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Mesoporous Co3O4 nanoplates were successfully prepared by the conversion of hexagonal beta-Co(OH)(2) nanoplates. TEM, HRTEM and N-2 sorption analysis confirmed the facet crystal structure and inner mesoporous architecture. When applied as anode materials for lithium storage in lithium ion batteries, mesoporous Co3O4 nanocrystals delivered a high specific capacity. At 10 degrees C current rate, as-prepared mesoporous Co3O4 nanoplates delivered a specific capacity of 1203 mAh/g at first cycle and after 200 cycles it can still maintain a satisfied value (330 mAh/g). Fromex-situ TEM, SAED and FESEM observation, it was found that mesoporous Co3O4 nanoplates were reduced to Li2O and Co …

Although much progress has been made to develop high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), the reported physical or chemical routes to sulfur cathode materials are often multistep/complex and even involve environmentally hazardous reagents, and hence are infeasible for mass production. Here, we report a simple ball-milling technique to combine both the physical and chemical routes into a one-step process for low-cost, scalable, and eco-friendly production of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) edge-functionalized with sulfur (S-GnPs) as highly efficient LSB cathode materials of practical significance. LSBs based on the S-GnP cathode materials, produced by ball-milling 70 wt % sulfur and 30 wt % graphite, delivered …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Multi-layer graphene sheets have been synthesized by a time-efficient microwave autoclave method and used to form composites in situ with single-walled carbon nanotubes. The application of these composites as flexible free-standing film electrodes was then investigated. According to the transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction characterizations, the average d-spacing of the graphene-single-walled carbon nanotube composites was 0.41 nm, which was obviously larger than that of the as-prepared pure graphene (0.36 nm). The reversible Li-cycling properties of the free-standing films have been evaluated by galvanostatic discharge-charge cycling and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results showed that the free-standing composite film with 70 wt% …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A facile and controllable approach has been developed to synthesize three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based monoliths. Here, as a proof-of-concept experiment, self-assembled 3D CoO/graphene sheets (CoO/GS) composites with porous structures have been successfully fabricated in an ethanol medium by a one-step, in situ growth, solvothermal method. During the process, the in situ nucleation and growth of CoO particles on GS were tuned by the formation of a 3D GS network. In the as-prepared composites, the self-assembled 3D GS network around the CoO particles can not only provide a 3D conductive matrix, but also buffer the volume changes of CoO and restrain the …

Their electrochemical performance is significantly improved comparing with the commercial sulfur powder and the as-prepared sulfur without honeycomb morphology. There has been no report on using a soft template to prepare honeycomb-like sulfur particles.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Monodisperse porous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. The diameter of the nanospheres can be tuned by controlling the reactant concentration. Lower reactant concentration is favoured for the synthesis of mesoporous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres with higher surface area. The electrochemical results show that mesoporous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres exhibit high reversible specific capacity (1110 mAh g-1) for Li storage and high capacity retention, with 700 mAh g-1 retained up to 50 cycles. The excellent electrochemical properties could be attributed to the large surface area and mesoporous structure. The results suggest that Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 could be a promising high capacity anode …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 nanotube arrays grown on Ti mesh were prepared via the anodization process. The diameters of the Ti and TiO 2/Ti wires and the length of the TiO2 nanotubes have linear relationships with the anodization processing time. When the anodization processing time is 600 min, the TiO2/Ti mesh anode materials showed good capacity retention and high specific area capacity, without the need for a current collector or binder, due to their high surface area, high substrate utilization, and large active material loading rate per unit area. At the current density of 50 μA cm-2, TiO2/Ti mesh with 600 …

Pristine Organo-Imido Polyoxometalates As An Anode For Lithium Ion Batteries, Rao Naumaan Nasim Khan, Nasir Mahmood, Chunlin Lv, Guohui Sima, Jin Zhang, Jian Hao, Yanglong Hou, Yongge Wei

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Here we have designed a strategy to improve the electronic conductivities of polyoxometalates (POMs) via property-oriented organic grafting for use in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). POMs usually exhibit limited electronic conductivity that hinders their use in electronic applications. Organic grafting of POMs defines a valuable path for improving electronic conductivities of POMs, due to the enhanced metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) via d-π electronic interactions, and results in their feasible application in LIBs. Comparative practical and theoretical study of the effect of functional groups revealed that grafting of the remote electron withdrawing group (-SCN) on POMs via organo-imidoylization along with …
