This thesis mainly focuses on the experimental investigations of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) related phenomena in various systems involving multilevel atoms inside an optical ring cavity. Semiclassical methods, e.g. density-matrix equations, are used through out this thesis to simulate the experimental results. First, the cavity transmission spectrum can be significantly modified when multilevel atoms are placed inside an optical ring cavity. Such coupled atom-cavity systems are well explained by the intracavity dispersion/absorption properties. Specifically, three-level lambda-type, four-level N-type and double-lambda-type atoms inside an optical ring cavity are investigated by examining their cavity transmission spectra. We have studied isotropic-to-nematic pretransitional fluctuations in an aqueous solution of disodium cromoglycate (cromolyn) by static and dynamic light scattering. Cromolyn is a representative of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals with building units being elongated rods formed by aggregates of disk-like molecules. By combining light-scattering and viscosity measurements we have determined the correlation length and relaxation time of the orientational order-parameter fluctuations and estimated the size of the cromolyn aggregates. The pretransitional behavior of light scattering does not completely follow the classic Landau-de Gennes model. The temperature and frequency dependent dielectric relaxation behavior of a liquid crystalline (S)-(+)-1-methylheptyl 4-[2-(4-alkoxyphenyl) thiophene-5-carbonylthiooxy] benzoate system is reported. Interesting successive antiferroelectric-ferroelectric-antiferroelectric (AF-FE-AF) phase transitions are observed in this system resembling the successive phase transitions observed in crystalline Rochelle salt. The smectic-C*(SmC*) to AF1 phase transition (around 103.0 °C) is first order in nature, predicted from the use of Orihara and Ishibashi theory. This dissertation presents results from cluster anion photodetachment experiments of the solvated iodide anion as a means of investigating electron molecule interaction. Due to the localization of the excess charge on the iodine atom, these experiments proceed analogously to electron scattering experiments, in that exposure to sufficient photon energy detaches the electron, which may or may not interact with the target molecule before being detected. Such interactions are related to temporary electron capture into the σ* orbital of the target molecule.

Salt Long-Slit Spectroscopy Of Luminous Obscured Quasars: An Upper Limit On The Size Of The Narrow-Line Region?, Kevin N. Hainline, Ryan Hickox, Jenny E. Greene, Adam D. Myers, Nadia L. Zakamska

We present spatially resolved long-slit spectroscopy from the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) to examine the spatial extent of the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of a sample of 8 luminous obscured quasars at 0.10 < z < 0.43. Our results are consistent with an observed shallow slope in the relationship between NLR size and L_[OIII], which has been interpreted to indicate that NLR size is limited by the density and ionization state of the NLR gas rather than the availability of ionizing photons. We also explore how the NLR size scales with a more direct measure of instantaneous AGN power using mid-IR photometry from WISE, which probes warm to hot dust near the central black hole and so, unlike [OIII], does not depend on the properties of the NLR. Using our results as well as samples from the literature, we obtain a power-law relationship between NLR size and L_8micron that is significantly steeper than that observed for NLR size and L_[OIII]. We find that the size of the NLR goes approximately as L^(1/2)_8micron, as expected from the simple scenario of constant-density clouds illuminated by a central ionizing source. We further see tentative evidence for a flattening of the relationship between NLR size and L_8micron at the high luminosity end, and propose that we are seeing a limiting NLR size of 10 - 20 kpc, beyond which the availability of gas to ionize becomes too low. We find that L_[OIII] ~ L_8micron^(1.4), consistent with a picture in which the L_[OIII] is dependent on the volume of the NLR. These results indicate that high-luminosity quasars have a strong effect in ionizing the available gas in a galaxy.

We present extensive multi-wavelength observations of the extremely rapidly declining Type Ic supernova (SN Ic), SN 2005ek. Reaching a peak magnitude of MR = –17.3 and decaying by ~3 mag in the first 15 days post-maximum, SN 2005ek is among the fastest Type I supernovae observed to date. The spectra of SN 2005ek closely resemble those of normal SN Ic, but with an accelerated evolution. There is evidence for the onset of nebular features at only nine days post-maximum. Spectroscopic modeling reveals an ejecta mass of ~0.3 M that is dominated by oxygen (~80%), while the pseudo-bolometric light …

This dissertation represents a study of the effects of electron molecule interactions in the detachment and dissociation dynamics of copper based molecular anions. Results are presented on the photodetachment of small copper oxide CuOn (n = 1, 2) and copper fluoride CuF n (n = 1, 2) molecular anions. Effects of different resonances are explored using the photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) and the relative intensity variations in vibrational channel cross sections. Three red giants were investigated within the open cluster IC 4756 using observations taken from the McDonald Observatory's 2.1m Otto Struve Telescope and the Sandiford Cassegrain Echelle Spectrometer (SES). Iron abundances were calculated for each star based on the equivalent widths of Fe I and Fe II lines measured using the line lists of Bubar and King (2010) and Schuler et al. (2005). Also derived were the basic atmospheric parameters: effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and microturbulence. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) exerts direct and indirect influences on aquatic organisms. In order to better understand how DOM causes these effects, potentiometric titration was carried out for a wide range of autochthonous and terrigenous freshwater DOM isolates. The isolates were previously characterized by absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy. Proton binding constants (pKa) were grouped into three classes:acidic (pKa ≤ 5), intermediate (5 < pKa ≤ 8.5) and basic (pKa > 8.5). The first portion of this research explores the role of water vapor on the kinetics of important atmospheric reactions. Work is presented on the self-reaction of β-hydroxyethyl peroxy radical (β-HEP) and the catalytic increase in reaction rate by water vapor. β-HEP serves as a model system for investigating the possible role of water vapor in perturbing the kinetics and product branching ratio of atmospheric reactions of other alkyl peroxy radicals. Gamma rays emitted in the de-excitation of the nucleus 73Br were created in two distinct experiments. Using Gammasphere and Microball, the first experiment selected nuclei created in the reaction for an incident 40Ca beam and a 40Ca target that were coincident with the creation of 1 a particle, 3 protons, and 4 gamma rays. We explored the orbital structure of FeTiO3 with polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectra complemented with electronic structure calculations. The electronic structure, near the bottom of conduction band, is composed of O 2p and Ti 3d orbitals. Ti 3d/4p hybridization dominantly lies on the ab plane. The highly delocalized Ti 4p orbital might hybridize with O 2p orbital and even extend to the next-neighbor Fe atom whereby establishing a linear orbital combination of Ti-O-Fe. A clear picture of the orbital construction in FeTiO3 will help to elucidate the paths of pressure-induced charge transfer and other physical or magnetic characteristics.

Stopped-flow kinetic data were obtained for the iron-type nitrile hydratase from Rhodococcus equi TG328-2 (ReNHase) using methacrylonitrile as the substrate. Multiple turnover experiments suggest a three-step kinetic model that allows for the reversible binding of substrate, the presence of an intermediate, and the formation of product. Microscopic rate constants determined from these data are in good agreement with steady state data confirming that the stopped-flow method used was appropriate for the reaction. Single turnover stopped-flow experiments were used to identify catalytic intermediates. These data were globally fit confirming a three-step kinetic model. We describe recent experiments in which mass spectrometry and laser spectroscopy are combined to characterize Li(+)-H(2), Na(+)-H(2), B(+)-H(2), and Al(+)-H(2) complexes in the gas-phase. The infrared spectra, which feature full resolution of rotational sub-structure, are recorded by monitoring M(+) photo fragments as the infrared wavelength is scanned. The spectra deliver detailed information on the way in which a hydrogen molecule is attached to a metal cation including the intermolecular separation, the force constant for the intermolecular bond and the H-H stretching frequency. The complexes all possess T-shaped equilibrium geometries and display a clear correlation between the length and force constant …

We report vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra of internally cold HOCO– and DOCO– anions at wavelengths near and well above the detachment threshold. These spectra are dominated by a strong Franck–Condon progression of three low-energy modes of the cis isomer, the first gas-phase measurement of these vibrations. Using highly resolved, near-threshold spectra we are able to reassign the electron affinities (EAs) of cis- and trans-HOCO to 1.51 ± 0.01 and 1.37 ± 0.01 eV, respectively. Using these EAs, well depths with respect to OH + CO are determined to be 1.07 ± 0.02 eV for trans-HOCO and 0.99 ± 0.02 eV …

A cryogenically cooled linear electrostatic ion beam trap for use in photoelectron-photofragment coincidence (PPC) spectroscopy is described. Using this instrument, anions created in cold, low-dutycycle sources can be stored for many seconds in a ∼20 K environment to cool radiatively, removing energetic uncertainties due to vibrationally excited precursor anions. This apparatus maintains a well-collimated beam necessary for high-resolution fragment imaging and the high experimental duty cycle needed for coincidence experiments. The determination of bacterial identity at the strain level is still a complex and time-consuming endeavor. In this study, visible wavelength spontaneous Raman spectroscopy has been used for the discrimination of four closely related Escherichia coli strains: pathogenic enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7 and non-pathogenic E. coli C, E. coli Hfr K-12, and E. coli HF4714. Raman spectra from 600 to 2000 cm-1 were analyzed with two multivariate chemometric techniques, principal component-discriminant function analysis and partial least squares-discriminant analysis, to determine optimal parameters for the discrimination of pathogenic E. coli from the non-pathogenic strains. An outcrop in La Serre, France, was officially ratified by the ICS in 1989, and the IUGS in 1990, as the location of the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the Famennian–Tournaisian, and subsequently the Devonian–Carboniferous (D–C) boundary. Several recent discoveries demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy has a unique capability to characterize body fluid traces in a forensic capacity. This approach has thus garnered interest in the forensic community since 2008, when a proof of concept experiment established that blood, semen, vaginal fluid, sweat and saliva are easily differentiable through their Raman spectra. Several possible methods of identification have been described in the literature, one approach uses chemometrical models, and another applies recently formulated multidimensional Raman signatures. The potential of terahertz spectroscopy in distinguishing aromatic carbon compounds in bio-chars is The potential of terahertz spectroscopy in distinguishing aromatic carbon compounds in bio-chars is demonstrated. Several types of biochar samples were measured and compared with the THz spectra of pure aromatic compounds. Infrared spectra were modeled with B3LYP and mP2PLYP methods. Modeling could not identify accurately each of the absorption lines. However modeling shows that one of the lines close to 500 cm-1 is due to vibrations of carbon rings, which can be used for identification of aromatic carbons in biochars. and compared with the THz spectra of …

A new azo-oxime ligand, 2-[(E)-(hydroxyimino)methyl]-4-[(E)- (4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]phenol, (pxoxH_2) (2), was prepared by condensation of hydroxylamminehydrochloride and 2-hydroxy5- [(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]benzaldehyde (1) with treatment of a solution of diazonium salt of p-nitroaniline and 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde in ethanol. The 6 coordination compounds, [Mn(pxoxH)_2(H_2O)_2].H_2O (3), [Co(pxoxH)_2(H_2O)_2].4H_2O (4), [Ni(pxoxH)_2(H_2O)_2].2H_2O (5), [Cu(pxoxH)_2].H_2O (6), [Zn(pxoxH)_2].6H_2O (7), and [Cd(pxoxH)_2(H_2O)_2].H_2O (8), were prepared by reacting Mn(II), Ni(II) Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) ions with the ligand. The structures of the compounds were elucidated from the elemental analysis data and spectroscopic studies. Due to the increasing prevalence of firearm related crimes, there is a need for an all-encompassing analytical technique which can rapidly detect and analyze trace crime scene firearm evidence. There are several forms of ballistics and trace evidence associated with firearm offenses. Historically, the most neglected piece of evidence has ironically been the most prevalent. Each firearm discharge produces a so called gunshot residue (GSR) sample, expelling dust and particles numbering from hundreds to thousands throughout the shooting environment. Renewable energy is a major concern due to increased world energy consumption. In particular, solar energy is a type of renewable energy source that uses devices known as solar cells to convert sunlight to electricity. Specifically, devices referred to as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) employ dyes to absorb solar energy. Dyes derived from ruthenium complexes have been typically used in DSSCs. The lineshapes of the D1 (22S1/2 → 22P1/2 ) and D2 (22S3/2 → 22P1/2) transitions in lithium were measured using a diode laser that was frequency-stabilized to a Ti:Sapphire 1 GHz optical frequency comb. The excitation was achieved by retroreflecting the diode laser, in effect producing the Doppler-free profiles for the center frequencies of transitions. The observed spectra were compared to density matrix calculations to gain insight into systematic effects including the dependence of Doppler-free profiles on power and polarization angle of the diode.
