It is generally accepted that the main cause of ultracold neutron (UCN) losses in storage traps is upscattering to the thermal energy range by hydrogen adsorbed on the surface of the trap walls. However, the data on which this conclusion is based are poor and contradictory. Here we report a measurement, performed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory UCN source, of the average energy of the flux of upscattered neutrons after the interaction of UCN with hydrogen bound in the semicrystalline polymer PMP (trade name TPX), [C6H12]n. Our analysis, performed with the mcnp code which applies …

Nanoparticles And Polymer Crystallization Kinetics In Hybrid Electronic Devices, Taylor William Wagner Dec 2013

Nanoparticles And Polymer Crystallization Kinetics In Hybrid Electronic Devices, Taylor William Wagner

Master's Theses

Conjugated semi-conducting polymers have become well known for their potential applications in hybrid electronic devices like solar cells, LEDs, and organic displays. These hybrid devices also contain inorganic nanoparticles, which complement the polymer when they are combined into the same layer. Control over the conformation and crystallinity of the polymer is critical for device performance, yet not much is known about the effect that these nanoparticles have on the polymer. Here, zinc oxide nanowire was surface modified with mono-substituted-carboxylic acid tetraphenylporphyrin and dodecanethiol, and introduced to poly(3-hexyl thiophene) in solution. The electron transfer, kinetics, and thermodynamics of this system were …

Formulation Development Of A Polymer-Drug Matrix With A Controlled Release Profile For The Treatment Of Glaucoma, Eric W. Tsoi

Master's Theses

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the United States accounting for 9-12% of all cases of blindness. Currently, the front line treatment for glaucoma are prostaglandins that may have to be taken up to several times a day. Even with proper treatment, roughly 11% of the patients using the treatment are non-compliant and lose their vision. In this project, ForSight Laboratories has developed a pharmaceutical drug delivering implant with the capability of sustaining long-term release of a prostaglandin as a new way to treat the condition. This project reports the product development of a polymer drug matrix with …

Effect Of Director Distortions On Morphologies Of Phase Separation In Liquid Crystals, D. Voloschenko, Oleg P. Pishnyak, Sergij V. Shiyanovskii, Oleg Lavrentovich Oct 2013

Effect Of Director Distortions On Morphologies Of Phase Separation In Liquid Crystals, D. Voloschenko, Oleg P. Pishnyak, Sergij V. Shiyanovskii, Oleg Lavrentovich

Oleg Lavrentovich

We study phase separation from a nematic liquid crystal with spatially nonuniform director gradients. Particles of a phase-separated component, which is either an isotropic fluid (silicone oil) or a nonmesogenic photopolymer, accumulate in the regions with the strongest director distortions, thus reducing the overall energy of the system.

Tilted Photoalignment Of A Nematic Liquid Crystal Induced By A Magnetic Field, Denis Andrienko, Yuri Kurioz, Yuri Reznikov, Charles Rosenblatt, Rolfe Petschek, Oleg Lavrentovich, Darius Subacius

Oleg Lavrentovich

Nematic liquid crystal cells with polyvinyl cinnamate coated substrates were subjected to ultraviolet light. When this was done in the presence of an oblique magnetic field the photoalignment was found to be temporally and thermally robust, with a large pretilt angle and weak polar anchoring. Moreover, two easy axes with equal and opposite pretilt angle were obtained, such that a magnetic field could switch the director from one easy axis to the other. Dielectric Relaxation Behavior Of A Liquid Crystal Showing An Unusual Type Of Antiferroelectric-Ferroelectric-Antiferroelectric Phase Sequence, S. K. Kundu, B. K. Chaudhuri, A. Seed, Antal Jakli

Antal Jakli

The temperature and frequency dependent dielectric relaxation behavior of a liquid crystalline (S)-(+)-1-methylheptyl 4-[2-(4-alkoxyphenyl) thiophene-5-carbonylthiooxy] benzoate system is reported. Interesting successive antiferroelectric-ferroelectric-antiferroelectric (AF-FE-AF) phase transitions are observed in this system resembling the successive phase transitions observed in crystalline Rochelle salt. The smectic-C*(SmC*) to AF1 phase transition (around 103.0 °C) is first order in nature, predicted from the use of Orihara and Ishibashi theory. It is also found that a contribution of the ferroelectric SmC* phase ordering penetrates even in the antiferroelectric AF1 (SmCA*) and AF2 (Sm …

Photoinduced Three-Dimensional Orientational Order In Side Chain Liquid Crystalline Azopolymers, O. Yaroshchuk, K. Kiselev, Yu. Zakrevskyy, T. Bidna, J. Kelly, Liang-Chy Chien, J. Lindau

Liang-Chy Chien

We apply experimental technique based on the combination of methods dealing with principal refractive indices and absorption coefficients to study the photoinduced three-dimensional (3D) orientational order in the films of liquid crystalline (LC) azopolymers. The technique is used to identify 3D orientational configurations of trans azobenzene chromophores and to characterize the degree of ordering in terms of order parameters. We study two types of LC azopolymers which form structures with preferred in-plane and out-of-plane alignment of azochromophores, respectively. Using irradiation with the polarized light of two different wavelengths, we find that the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy can be dominated by …

Optimization Of Polymer Separation By Gradient Polymer Elution Chromatography, Gideon R. Liem, Linda Nien-Hwa Wang Oct 2013

Optimization Of Polymer Separation By Gradient Polymer Elution Chromatography, Gideon R. Liem, Linda Nien-Hwa Wang

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) has been a versatile separation method for polymers for many years. Analysis of different polymers by HPLC is typically done by utilizing the differential solubility of the polymers by mixing a good solvent and an anti-solvent in various compositions. This method is called Gradient Polymer Elution Chromatography (GPEC). While GPEC has been used extensively, it commonly uses a linear gradient to separate components. Linear solvent gradients consume a lot of solvent and take a relatively long time (> 30 minutes) to complete. The goal of this study is to develop a step gradient from a …

Fabrication Of Multilayered Structure For Coherent Random Lasing, John Rauchenstein, Young L. Kim Oct 2013

Fabrication Of Multilayered Structure For Coherent Random Lasing, John Rauchenstein, Young L. Kim

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

High powered lasers have many applications, including medical treatment and surgery. However, these lasers are extremely expensive and are therefore not widely available. The aim of this study was to demonstrate a method to create such a laser with significantly decreased overall cost and increased efficiency. In order to do this, we explored a phenomenon called random lasing which is a light amplification process. To start with, a low-cost pumping laser is directed at normal incidence toward a multi-layered sample with two alternating layers. At first pearl, a naturally found material that has many organic nano-scale layers (similar to the …

Redefining The Operation And Design Considerations Of Organic Solar Cells: Role Of Morphology And Defect States, Biswajit Ray

Open Access Dissertations

Organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology is currently a topic of great interest for potentially low cost solar energy conversion and possibility of many novel PV applications (e.g., building-integrated PV, portable solar cells). Successful commercialization of this technology, however, will require significant improvement in efficiency and lifetime. In the last few years, innovation in novel polymer synthesis has raised the efficiency of OPV above 10%, at par with a-Si and earth-abundant solar cells. Further improvement in performance relies on breakthroughs in device design, which requires profound understanding of the physics of device operation. A major challenge in the design of the state …

Development Of Quantitative Ft- Ir Methods For Analyzing The Cure Kinetics Of Epoxy Resins, Sang Ha Son

Open Access Dissertations

Epoxy thermosets are important engineering materials with applications in coating, adhesives, packaging and as structural components in a variety of advanced engineering products. The ultimate performance of polymer critically depends upon the details of the cure chemistry used to produce the thermoset. In order to better understand and monitor the cure chemistry, quantitative analysis of the FT-IR response has been developed for describing the epoxy-amine curing reaction as well as monitoring the hydrogen bonding that occurs in these systems The FT-IR analysis includes (i) quantitative deconvolution of complex peaks into individual spectral contributions, (ii) peak identification via DFT analysis and …

Latent Cysteine Residues From Polymers Prepared Via Free And Controlled Radical Polymerizations, Douglas Vincent Amato Jun 2013

Latent Cysteine Residues From Polymers Prepared Via Free And Controlled Radical Polymerizations, Douglas Vincent Amato

Master's Theses

One less commonly used “click” reaction is thiazolidine chemistry. Thiazolidine chemistry is a commonly used reaction used in biological systems because the reaction requires the presence of both cysteine (a common amino acid) and an aldehyde or ketone. If cysteine residues could be incorporated into a polymer then a variety of applications could be developed. Polymers containing free thiols (aka thiomers) have developed in the last decade to become great mucoadhesives. If there was a facile route to control the amount of free thiols along the polymer then more fine-tuned and potentially stronger adhesives could be made. For these reasons …

Re-Healable Coating Based Upon Thermally Responsive Linkages, Dahlia Ningrum Amato Jun 2013

Re-Healable Coating Based Upon Thermally Responsive Linkages, Dahlia Ningrum Amato

Master's Theses

The goal of this thesis was to design thermally responsive polyol resins that would be compatible with isocyanates. Two approaches were made to reach this goal, the first involved functionalizing soybean oil and the second involved post-polymerization modification of a methacrylate based resin.

A soybean based coating with thermally responsive Diels-Alder linkages has been prepared following an automotive two-component formulation. The resulting coatings displayed the capability to be healed following physical deformation by a thermal stimulus, and such a material has significant potential for end users. Various curing agents were employed, and resulted in variation of scratch resistance and re-healablity. …

Electrospinning Nanofibers For Controlled Drug Release, Indrani Banik May 2013

Electrospinning Nanofibers For Controlled Drug Release, Indrani Banik

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Electrospinning is the most widely studied technique for the synthesis of nanofibers. Electrospinning is considered as one of the technologies that can produce nanosized drugs incorporated in polymeric nanofibers. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that the release rates of drugs from these nanofiber formulations are enhanced compared to those from original drug substance. This technology has the potential for enhancing the oral delivery of poorly soluble drugs [1]. The electrospun mats were made using Polycaprolactone/PCL, Poly(DL-lactide)/PDL 05 and Poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide)/PLGA. The drugs incorporated in the electrospun fibers were 5-Fluorouracil and Rapamycin. The evidence of the drugs being embedded …

Conducting Polymer Nanoparticles Synthesized In An Ionic Liquid By Chemical Polymerisation, J.M. Pringle, Orawan Ngamna, Jun Chen, Gordon G. Wallace, Maria Forsyth, Douglas Macfarlane Mar 2013

Conducting Polymer Nanoparticles Synthesized In An Ionic Liquid By Chemical Polymerisation, J.M. Pringle, Orawan Ngamna, Jun Chen, Gordon G. Wallace, Maria Forsyth, Douglas Macfarlane

Gordon Wallace

Ionic liquids are ideal media for the synthesis and application of conducting polymers as they can exhibit excellent oxidative and reductive stability, allowing access to potentials outside the smaller electrochemical window of molecular solvent/electrolyte systems. Here we report the first use of an ionic liquid for the chemical synthesis of poly(pyrrole), poly(thiophene) and poly(terthiophene) using a variety of oxidants. The polymers have been analysed by UV–vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and dynamic light scattering, which shows the particles to be <500 nm diameter. TEM analysis shows the individual poly(thiophene) particles to be <100 nm.

Controlled Deposition Of Polymer Carbon Nanotube Composites Through Inkjet Printing, William Small, Fatemeh Masdarolomoor, Gordon G. Wallace, Marc In Het Panhuis Mar 2013

Controlled Deposition Of Polymer Carbon Nanotube Composites Through Inkjet Printing, William Small, Fatemeh Masdarolomoor, Gordon G. Wallace, Marc In Het Panhuis

Gordon Wallace

The controlled deposition of polyaniline carbon nanotube composites by inkjet printing is reported. It is demonstrated that the sheet resistance and transmittance can be expressed in amount of composite and MWNT material deposited. The most efficient way for improving the sheet resistance while keeping the cost in optical transparency to a minimum is by increasing the total amount of material deposited, rather than increasing MWNT loading fraction.

Levetiracetam-Loaded Biodegradable Polymer Implants In The Tetanus Toxin Model Of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy In Rats, Amy J. Halliday, Toni E. Campbell, Timothy S. Nelson, Karen J. Mclean, Gordon G. Wallace, Mark J. Cook

Gordon Wallace

Approximately one-third of people with epilepsy receive insufficient benefit from currently available anticonvulsant medication, and some evidence suggests that this may be due to a lack of effective penetration into brain parenchyma. The current study investigated the ability of biodegradable polymer implants loaded with levetiracetam to ameliorate seizures following implantation above the motor cortex in the tetanus toxin model of temporal lobe epilepsy in rats. The implants led to significantly shorter seizures and a trend towards fewer seizures for up to 1 week. The results of this study indicate that drug-eluting polymer implants represent a promising evolving treatment option for …

Tensile Testing Of Individual Glassy, Rubbery And Hydrogel Electrospun Polymer Nanofibres To High Strain Using The Atomic Force Microscope, Adrian Gestos, Philip G. Whitten, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The production and use of polymer nanofibre assemblies prepared by electrospinning is now widespread. It is known that the tensile properties of electrospun polymer fibres can be different to those of bulk polymers. Here, we report a general method for measuring the tensile properties of individual electrospun nanofibres that employs a commercial atomic force microscope. Methods for preparing samples, force calibration and calculation of tensile stress and strain are described along with error estimation. By appropriate choice of AFM cantilever, it is shown that the tensile stress-strain curves can be measured for glassy, rubbery and gel polymer nanofibres. Testing can …

Inkjet Printed Conductive Polymer-Based Beam-Splitters For Terahertz Applications, Benjamin S-Y Ung, Bo Weng, Roderick L. Shepherd, Derek Abbott, Christopher Fumeaux

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Terahertz beam-splitters are fabricated from conductive polymers inkjet printed onto an acetate film substrate. The principle is a significant evolution of the recently proposed ultra-thin beam-splitter realized using silver conductive paint. The splitting ratios of the beam-splitters are dependent on the thickness and conductivity of the conductive polymer layer, allowing for any splitting ratio to be achieved accurately from a controlled printing process. As the processing technology of conductive polymers matures, this approach will allow for low cost and accurate fabrication of THz beam-splitters with a predefined near frequency-independent splitting ratio, in contrast to the commonly used float zone silicon …

Polypyrrole As Cathode Materials For Zn-Polymer Battery With Various Biocompatible Aqueous Electrolytes, Sha Li, Irin Sultana, Zaiping Guo, Caiyun Wang, G G. Wallace, Hua-Kun Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Polypyrrole films doped with p-toluenesulfonic anions on stainless steel mesh substrates were prepared by the electropolymerization method. A Zn/aqueous solution/polymer battery system was thus established with the polymer film as the cathode and three different biocompatible aqueous electrolytes. The mechanism of the anode reaction can be explained as the dissolution of Zn. It was found, however, that the discharge performance, including the discharge plateaus and capacities, were significantly affected by the polymer reactions. To elucidate the reaction mechanisms of the conductive polymer, its electrochemical properties were systematically studied by several techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and monitoring mass …

Super-Aptamer Bio-Imprinted Hydrogels : An Investigation Into The Optimization And Characterization Of Cross-Linked Polymeric Materials Displaying Macromolecular Amplified Responses, Nicholas Alexander Gariano

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It is becoming more important to detect ultra-low concentrations of analytes for biomedical, environmental, and national security applications. Equally important is that new methods should be easy to use, inexpensive, portable, and if possible allow detection using the naked eye. Detection of low concentrations of analytes generally cannot be achieved directly, but requires signal amplification by catalysts, macromolecules, metal surfaces or supramolecular aggregates. The rapidly progressing field of macromolecular signal amplification has been advanced using conjugated polymers, chirality in polymers, solvating polymers and polymerization/depolymerization strategies. The use of molecularly imprinted polymers is ideal for creation of novel sensors to meet …

Mechanical Properties Of Interpenetrating Polymer Network Hydrogels Based On Hybrid Ionically And Covalently Crosslinked Networks, Sina Naficy, Shota Kawakami, Sasha Sadeghovaad, Minato Wakisaka, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Hydrogels are polymer networks swollen in water. Because of their soft and wet nature, and their ability to show large volume changes, hydrogels can be useful in many biomedical and actuator applications. In these applications, it is crucial to tune the mechanical and physical properties of a hydrogel in a controllable manner. Here, interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) made of a covalently crosslinked network and an ionically crosslinked network were produced to investigate the effective parameters that control the physical and mechanical properties of an IPN hydrogel. Covalently crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAAm) or poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) networks were produced in the presence …

Effect Of Polymer Ligand Structures On Fluorescence Of Gold Clusters Prepared By Photoreduction, Luo Li, Zhen Li, Hui Zhang, Shoucun Zhang, Irfan Majeed, Bien Tan

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Blue emission fluorescent Au5 clusters with maximum quantum yield of 20.1% were synthesized by a simple photoreduction method using three specially designed tridentate polymer ligands. The evolution of fluorescent Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) under UV irradiation was studied by fluorescence, UV-Vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques, suggesting that the fluorescence of Au NCs is size-dependent and is associated with the presence of Au(i) ions in the Au NCs. The effect of polymer structure on the fluorescent Au NCs has also been discussed. These highly fluorescent Au NCs have potential applications in the fabrication of optoelectronic devices and light emitting materials.
