A Harmadik Világháború. Minden Héten Háromszor., Pal R. Molnar

Pal R. Molnar

Pesszimista jóslatok szerint közeledik a harmadik világháború, a világégés. Ezt a háborút valószínűleg atomfegyverekkel vívják, ami évezredekre megmérgezi a földet és elhozza az emberiség végét.

The World War Iii. Three Times In Every Week, Pal R. Molnar

Pal R. Molnar

The pessimistic prophecies say the third world war, the ‘world burning’ is approaching. This war probably will fight by nuclear weapons, it will poison the Earth for thousands of years, and it will bring the end of mankind.

Climate. Stern Review: The Economics Of Climate Change, Nicholas Stern

New England Journal of Public Policy

This chapter examines the increasingly serious impacts on people as the world warms. Climate change is a serious and urgent issue. The Earth has already warmed by 0.7°C since around 1900 and is committed to further warming over coming decades simply due to past emissions. On current trends, average global temperatures could rise by 2–3°C within the next fifty years or so, with several degrees more in the pipeline by the end of the century if emissions continue to grow. This chapter examines how the physical changes in climate . . . affect the essential components of lives and livelihoods …

Solar Energy Research And Development In California, Brett T. Close Apr 2007

Solar Energy Research And Development In California, Brett T. Close

Pomona Senior Theses

The energy crisis of 2001, high prices for gas and electricity and worries of climate change have caused a growing awareness about energy issues in California. The problems are clear. This paper looks at the next step of finding and implementing solutions. In this case the contribution that solar photovoltaic and solar thermal generation could make toward solving the problem. This paper looks at technological change, the current state of solar energy research, current government policies on solar energy, and finally makes policy recommendations to meet the stated problem.

Impact Of Minimum Winter Temperatures On The Population Dynamics Of Dendroctonus Frontalis, J. KhảI TrầN, Tiina Ylioja, Ronald F. Billings, Jacques Régnière, Matthew P. Ayres

Dartmouth Scholarship

Predicting population dynamics is a fundamental problem in applied ecology. Temperature is a potential driver of short-term population dynamics, and temperature data are widely available, but we generally lack validated models to predict dynamics based upon temperatures. A generalized approach involves estimating the temperatures experienced by a population, characterizing the demographic consequences of physiological responses to temperature, and testing for predicted effects on abundance. We employed this approach to test whether minimum winter temperatures are a meaningful driver of pestilence from Dendroctonus frontalis (the southern pine beetle) across the southeastern United States. A distance-weighted interpolation model provided good, spatially explicit, …

Alcohols As Alternatives To Petroleum For Environmentally Clean Fuels And Petrochemicals, Ti̇mur Doğu, Di̇lek Varişli Jan 2007

Alcohols As Alternatives To Petroleum For Environmentally Clean Fuels And Petrochemicals, Ti̇mur Doğu, Di̇lek Varişli

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this review article, some of the challenging research areas related to the development of novel catalysts and catalytic processes for the chemical fixation of CO_2 by converting it to alcohols and ethers, and for the conversion of alcohols to olefins and other hydrocarbons are reviewed. Ethanol, methanol, and the ethers derived from them, such as DEE and DME, have good burning characteristics and may be considered attractive transportation fuel alternates. New processes for catalytic selective oxidation and dehydration of alcohols may open up new pathways for the production of olefins and other petrochemicals from non-petroleum feedstock. Developments in CO_2 …
