Loss of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) has been significant in many coastal and estuarine systems such as the Chesapeake Bay where SAV die-offs have been observed in marine, brackish, and freshwater SAV communities (Orth and Moore 1983). Large-scale replanting using whole plants can be cost-prohibitive, and the use of plants taken from wild populations for propagule supply may not be possible or desirable. Living shorelines represent a shoreline management option that combines various erosion control methodologies and/or structures while at the same time restoring or preserving natural shoreline vegetation communities. A common living shoreline design in Chesapeake Bay includes a low offshore rock sill to absorb wave energy with an emergent wetland landward of the sill to enhance erosion control, provide critical habitat, and improve water quality condition. This report presents the results of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) tagging and monitoring activities in Virginia during the period 1 September 2006 through 31 August 2007. It includes an assessment of the biological characteristics of striped bass taken from the 2007 spring spawning run, estimates of annual survival and fishing mortality based on annual spring tagging, and the preliminary results of the fall 2006 study that documents the prevalence of mycobacterial infections of striped bass in Chesapeake Bay. This project evaluated water bodies in the Virginia coastal zone using several water quality models to calculate residence times. Results were grouped into tidal flushing categories (quickly, intermediately, and slowly flushed) that reflect a relative time frame in which a water body is flushed.

This project had two major goals. The first builds on an earlier effort by the Virginia Department of Forestry, who delineated maritime forests using remote sensing techniques. Their project integrated land use and soils data to generate a map that defines potential boundaries of maritime forest. This study follows an identical approach with two major exceptions. The first is the soils data used in this study is mapped at a much finer scale. The second is this study has a field validation component that reviewed random sites around selected locations to ground-truth the remote sensing output. The Virginia Department of …

The synthesis of heterocyclic thioureas from heterocyclic amines with phenyl- or methylisothiocyanate or CS2 is described. Seven new X-ray crystal structures are reported: In N-(3-pyridyl)-N′-phenylthiourea (Pna21, a = 10.1453(3), b = 17.6183(5), c = 6.4787(2), V = 1158.02(6), Z = 4) hydrogen-bonding results in formation of a 3D network consisting of helices, which form channels parallel to the c-axis. In N-(4-pyridyl)-N′-phenylthiourea (P21/c, a = 16.9314(3), b = 10.3554(2), c = 13.5152(3), β = 106.5080(10), V = 2271.96(8), Z = 4, two independent molecules) hydrogen-bonding results in N–H···S bridged dimers …

Harvests of American eel along the U.S. Atlantic Coast have declined in recent years, and similar patterns have been noted in the Canadian Maritime Provinces as well as in Europe with its congener, A. anguilla (Ciccotti et al., 4 1995). Fishery independent indices of abundance have also shown a decline in American eel populations in recent years (Richkus and Whalen, 1999; Geer, 2003; Montane and Fabrizio, 2006). Possible explanations for this decline include Gulf Stream shifts, pollution, overfishing, parasites, and barriers to fish passage (Castonguay et al., 1994; Haro et al., 2000). The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) adopted the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (hereafter referred to as FMP) for the American eel in November 1999. The FMP focuses on increasing coastal states’ efforts to collect American eel data through both fishery dependent and fishery independent studies. Coastal development pressures in the Mid-Atlantic have been attributed to significant negative impacts to aquatic ecosystems. The Lynnhaven River watershed, located in the southernmost extent of the Chesapeake Bay and encompassing Virginia Beach, is an example of a shallow-water tidal system under intense development pressure that is confronted with multiple and often conflicting coastal management issues. The structurally unique and highly luminescent 20 : 7 complex of CuCN with piperazine (Pip) was formed under aqueous conditions; its structure reveals two interpenetrated 2D sub-networks in 6 : 1 ratio: (CuCN)2(Pip) and (CuCN)8(Pip), the latter consisting of Cu18(CN)16(Pip)2 macrocycles.

Continued growth of the shellfish aquaculture industry in Virginia has added significant value to the state’s seafood marketplace. Today, watermen continue to harvest both hard clams and oysters from the state’s public resources, albeit at diminished rates. At the same time, Virginia’s watermen-farmers are providing growing quantities of additional quality shellfish to consumers. Following the lead of the hard clam industry, there has been a significant transition to intensive aquaculture of native oysters in recent years. The once extensive oyster planting has disappeared primarily as a result of endemic oyster diseases and increasing wildlife predation of seed oysters. In its …

This project set out to strengthen arguments that living shorelines were a viable and preferred method of erosion control along much of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Using statistical tests and data that describe shoreline and environmental condition along tidal shoreline, the study found that indeed marshes are frequently associated with stable shoreline and therefore recommending living shoreline treatments to manage erosion problems was a reasonable strategy that warranted strong consideration. Additional tests revealed a lower occurrence of marshes when traditional erosion control structures like bulkheads and revetments were present. This review provides an assessment of sediment trap accuracy issues by gathering data to address trap hydrodynamics, the problem of zooplankton “swimmers,” and the solubilization of material after collection. For each topic, the problem is identified, its magnitude and causes reviewed using selected examples, and an update on methods to correct for the potential bias or minimize the problem using new technologies is presented. To minimize hydrodynamic biases due to flow over the trap mouth,the use of neutrally buoyant sediment traps is encouraged. Concern about the decline in landings of American shad (Alosa sapidissima) along the Atlantic coast prompted the development of an interstate fisheries management plan (FMP) under the auspices of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Management Program (ASMFC 1999). Legislation enables imposition of federal sanctions on fishing in those states that fail to comply with the FMP. To be in compliance, coastal states are required to implement and maintain fishery-dependent and fishery-independent monitoring programs as specified by the FMP. The Shoreline Inventory for Delaware Coastal Bays has occurred in a series of Phases beginning in 2005. Phase was to develop a Tidal Wetlands Protocol which included data development for the Shoreline Inventory for the Indian River Watershed.

The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. This Shoreline Management Plan (Plan) has been developed with funding from the Keith Campbell Foundation and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in response to the Anne Arundel County’s desire to create a comprehensive shoreline management plan for the South River coast (Figure 1).

The study area includes shorelines along the South River from Chesapeake Bay west and north to just above the Route 2 Bridge. The total shoreline assessed for the study is about 82 miles.
