Tidal Wetland Contributions To Fecal Coliform Loads In Shellfish Growing Waters By Analysis Of Model Prediction Discrepancy, Jie. Huang
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Fecal contamination in estuaries has become an increasing concern worldwide. The use of wetlands for wastewater treatment has expanded due to their natural ability to improve water quality by removing suspended sediments, nutrients, and fecal bacteria. In general, most of the removal occurs through deposition and accumulation in the wetland substrate. This would suggest that wetlands are effective filters for fecal coliform transported from terrestrial environments to surface waters. It has also been hypothesized, however, that wetlands may be an intermittent source of fecal coliform in tidal systems as a result of wildlife deposition and /or accumulation from terrestrial sources. …

Silcrete Hardpan In The North-Eastern Wheatbelt : Hydrological Implications For Oil Mallees, D L. Bennett, Russell Speed, Adrian Goodreid, Peter Taylor
Resource management technical reports
Silcrete is a brittle, intensely indurated rock comprising primarily quartz grains cemented with siliceous allophane. It occurs at 1.5 to 7 metres deep and is often several metres thick and extremely hard, requiring excavation. This Report discusses the extent of silcrete layers in the north-eastern wheatbelt area of Western Australia, the effects of silcrete on water absorption by the soil, and the effects of this physical obstacle on the growth and expansion of oil mallee trees of the region.

Gibson Oil Mallee Study : Drill Completion And Preliminary Hydrogeological Interpretation Report, John Andrew Simons, Peter Taylor, D L. Bennett, Western Australia. Department Of Conservation And Land Management
Resource management technical reports
Oil mallees are being planted in Western Australian wheatbelt farms with the expectation that they will reduce land salination by lowering watertables as well as providing income from combinations of eucalyptus oil distillation, power generation, activated carbon production and carbon sequestration in the future.
Vertical Movement Of Water In A High Plains Aquifer Induced By A Pumping Well, Xunhong Chen, Yanfeng Yin, James W. Goeke, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
Vertical Movement Of Water In A High Plains Aquifer Induced By A Pumping Well, Xunhong Chen, Yanfeng Yin, James W. Goeke, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Field observation and numerical simulations were carried out to evaluate the hydraulic relationship between the shallow and deep aquifer of a High Plains Aquifer system, in which shallow and deep aquifers are separated by an aquitard. Pumping from the lower aquifer resulted in a small drawdown in the upper aquifer and a larger drawdown in the aquitard; pumping from the shallow aquifer caused a small drawdown in the aquitard and the deep aquifer. Analysis of pumping test data gives the values of the hydraulic conductivity of the aquitard and the deep aquifer. Long-term observation of groundwater levels in the shallow …

Yorktown Beach 2003-2005, With Hurricane Isabel Impacts, Donna A. Milligan, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Linda M. Meneghini, George R. Thomas, Christine A. Wilcox
Reports
The Yorktown Public Beach is located on the south side of the York River at Yorktown, Virginia (Figure 1). It is approximately 1,200 feet in length. Historically, the beach was a product of erosion of nearby sandy upland banks and the littoral transport system. Over the years, the beaches along the waterfront began to narrow as the natural sediment supply was depleted by hardening of the updrift shorelines and were easily overwashed in storms and had continually eroded. Since 1978, various projects have taken place along Yorktown’s shoreline in order to abate erosion, provide a recreational beach, and minimize damage …

Salinity Investment Framework : Agricultural Land And Infrastructure, Richard J. George Dr, Ross Kingwell, J Hill-Tonkin, R A. Nulsen
Resource management technical reports
Greater awareness of the potential impact of salinity has led to increased public and private expenditure. The Salinity Investment Framework was developed to insert rigour and accountability into decision-making processes and guide future development. This report focusses on the economic impact of salinity on private and public land and the infrastructure of areas in Western Australia, including towns, railway systems, roads and the like.

Dryland Salinity In Western Australia: A Local Government Perspective, Paul Scalzi
Dryland Salinity In Western Australia: A Local Government Perspective, Paul Scalzi
Theses : Honours
This study evaluated local government's response to the problem of dryland salinity in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, and to what extent local government has the capacity to meet its statutory obligations. Salinity is a significant environmental problem that has the potential to have a marked effect on Western Australia's economy, environment and social fabric. The problem has been the focus of much Commonwealth and State attention, but the same level of involvement is not apparent in the institution of local government. This is also reflected in the paucity of published literature in the area of local government and salinity. Local …

Runoff Production In The Upper Rio Chagres Watershed, Panama, Fred Ogden
Runoff Production In The Upper Rio Chagres Watershed, Panama, Fred Ogden
Fred L. Ogden
Runoff production in tropical watersheds is governed by a wide variety of potential sources and there have been few rigorous studies to date. The 414 km2 upper Río Chagres basin offers a unique opportunity to better understand the runoff production mechanisms in tropical watersheds through data analysis and modeling with rainfall and runoff data. Flow data and tipping bucket rain gage data are available at both the basin outlet (Chico gage) and for an 80.6 km2 internal basin location (Piedras gage). Modeling is performed using the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting Model (SAC-SMA), calibrated using data from 2000 and verified using …
