Films of monolayer protected Au clusters (MPCs) with mixed alkanethiolate and ω-carboxylate alkanethiolate monolayers, linked together by carboxylate–Cu2+–carboxylate bridges, exhibit average edge-to-edge cluster spacings that vary with the numbers of methylene segments in the alkanethiolate ligand as determined by a combined atomic force microscopy (AFM)/UV-Vis spectroscopy method. The electronic conductivity (σEL) of dry films is exponentially dependent on the cluster spacing, consistent with electron tunneling through the alkanethiolate chains and non-bonded contacts between those chains on individual, adjacent MPCs. The calculated electronic coupling factor (β) for tunneling between MPCs is 1.2 Å−1, which is similar to …

Environment-Induced Degradation And Crack-Growth Studies Of Candidate Target Materials: Quarterly Progress Report (June 1 – August 31, 2003), Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

As indicated in the original proposal, the primary objective of this task is to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on environment-assisted cracking of candidate target materials for applications in spallationneutron- target (SNT) systems such as accelerator production of tritium (APT) and accelerator transmutation of waste (ATW). The materials selected for evaluation and characterization are martensitic stainless steels including Alloy HT-9, Alloy EP 823 and Type 422 stainless steel. The susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of these materials are being evaluated in aqueous environments of interest using tensile specimens under constant load and slow-strain-rate (SSR) conditions. …

Development Of A Mechanistic Understanding Of High-Temperature Deformation Of Alloy Ep-823 For Transmutation Applications: Quarterly Progress Report (June 01 – Aug 31, 2003), Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the elevated temperature tensile properties of Alloy EP-823, a leading target material for accelerator-driven waste transmutation applications. This Alloy has been proven to be an excellent structural material to contain the lead-bismuth-eutectic (LBE) nuclear coolant needed for fast spectrum operations. Very little data exist in the open literature on the tensile properties of this Alloy. The test material will be thermally treated prior to the evaluation of its tensile properties at temperatures relevant to the transmutation applications. The deformation characteristics of tensile specimens, upon completion of testing, will be evaluated by surface …

Use Of Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy For Stress-Strain Measurements: Quarterly Progress Report (June 01 – August 31, 2003), Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), the Idaho State University (ISU), and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is to evaluate the feasibility of determining residual stresses in cold-worked, plastically-deformed (bent), and welded materials using a nondestructive method based on positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). This technique uses γ-rays from a small MeV electron Linac to generate positrons inside the sample via pair production. This method is known to have capabilities of characterizing defects in thick specimens that could not be accomplished by conventional positron technique or other nondestructive methods. The generated …

The cross-section for deeply virtual Compton scattering in the reaction ep → eγp has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosities of 95.0 pb-1 of e+p and 16.7 pb-1 of e-p collisions. Differential cross-sections are presented as a function of the exchanged-photon virtuality, Q2, and the centre-of-mass energy, W, of the γ*p system in the region 5 < Q2 < 100 GeV2 and 40 < W < 140 GeV. The measured cross-sections rise steeply with increasing W. The measurements are compared to QCD-based calculations. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Unification Of Variance Components And Haseman-Elston Regression For Quantitative Trait Linkage Analysis, Wei-Min Chen, Karl W. Broman, Kung-Yee Liang

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Two of the major approaches for linkage analysis with quantitative traits in humans include variance components and Haseman-Elston regression. Previously, these have been viewed as quite separate methods. We describe a general model, fit by use of generalized estimating equations (GEE), for which the variance components and Haseman-Elston methods (including many of the extensions to the original Haseman-Elston method) are special cases, corresponding to different choices for a working covariance matrix. We also show that the regression-based test of Sham et al.(2002) is equivalent to a robust score statistic derived from our GEE approach. These results have several important implications. …

[1] We examined how adsorption and desorption of gases from inlets and a cell could affect the accuracy of closed-cell FTIR measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), methanol (CH3OH), acetic acid (CH3COOH), and ammonia (NH3). When standards were delivered to the cell through a stainless steel inlet, temporarily reduced transmission was observed for CH3OH and NH3. However, a halocarbon wax coated inlet (normally used on the system) had excellent transmission (comparable to room temperature …

Smooth Quantile Ratio Estimation, Francesca Dominici, Leslie Cope, Daniel Q. Naiman, Scott L. Zeger

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In a study of health care expenditures attributable to smoking, we seek to compare the distribution of medical costs for persons with lung cancer or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (cases) to those without (controls) using a national survey which includes hundreds of cases and thousands of controls. The distribution of costs is highly skewed toward larger values, making estimates of the mean from the smaller sample dependent on a small fraction of the biggest values. One approach to deal with the smaller sample is to rely on a simple parametric model such as the log-normal, but this makes the undesirable …

Hierarchical Bivariate Time Series Models: A Combined Analysis Of The Effects Of Particulate Matter On Morbidity And Mortality, Francesca Dominici, Antonella Zanobetti, Scott L. Zeger, Joel Schwartz, Jonathan M. Samet

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this paper we develop a hierarchical bivariate time series model to characterize the relationship between particulate matter less than 10 microns in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) and both mortality and hospital admissions for cardiovascular diseases. The model is applied to time series data on mortality and morbidity for 10 metropolitan areas in the United States from 1986 to 1993. We postulate that these time series should be related through a shared relationship with PM10.

At the first stage of the hierarchy, we fit two seemingly unrelated Poisson regression models to produce city-specific estimates of the log relative rates of mortality …

A Probability-Based Similarity Measure For Saupe Alignment Tensors With Applications To Residual Dipolar Couplings In Nmr Structural Biology, Anthony K. Yan, Christopher J. Langmead, Bruce Randall Donald

Computer Science Technical Reports

High-throughput NMR structural biology and NMR structural genomics pose a fascinating set of geometric challenges. A key bottleneck in NMR structural biology is the resonance assignment problem. We seek to accelerate protein NMR resonance assignment and structure determination by exploiting a priori structural information. In particular, a method known as Nuclear Vector Replacement (NVR) has been proposed as a method for solving the assignment problem given a priori structural information [24,25]. Among several different kinds of input data, NVR uses a particular type of NMR data known as residual dipolar couplings (RDCs). The basic physics of residual dipolar couplings tells …

Dynamics Underlying Fully Differential Cross Sections For Fast C⁶⁺ + He Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, J. Fiol

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single ionization of helium by impact of 100 MeV u-1 C6+ ions is investigated using the three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. Fully differential cross section calculations are compared to recently published data for ionized electrons emitted both in the scattering plane, and in the plane perpendicular to it that contains the initial velocity. the present calculations show good agreement with the experimental data, and improve upon continuum-distorted-wave results. the collision mechanisms that lead to the different structures observed in the fully differential cross sections are investigated and include those of the binary and recoil peaks for in-plane …

In this article, we compare chemical (87Sr/86Sr and elemental) analyses of archaeological maize from dated contexts within Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, to potential agricultural sites on the periphery of the San Juan Basin. The oldest maize analyzed from Pueblo Bonito probably was grown in an area located 80 km to the west at the base of the Chuska Mountains. The youngest maize came from the San Juan or Animas river floodplains 90 km to the north. This article demonstrates that maize, a dietary staple of southwestern Native Americans, was transported over considerable distances in …

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg, David W. Emerson, Gary Cerefice

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The recovery of iodine released during the processing of used nuclear fuel poses a significant challenge to the transmutation of radioactive iodine. During the first year of this program we have examined the potential of Fullerene Containing Carbon compounds (FCC) developed by KRI, and natural organic matter (NOM) as sorbents for iodine released during the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. This work involved the development of bench-scale testing of the FCC and NOM material in a simulated process off-gas environment.

During the first two quarters of this program we explored various analytical methods available for measurement of iodine, iodide, and iodate. …

Measurement Of Conductivity And Charge Storage In Insulators Related To Spacecraft Charging, A. R. Frederickson, Jr Dennison Oct 2003

Measurement Of Conductivity And Charge Storage In Insulators Related To Spacecraft Charging, A. R. Frederickson, Jr Dennison

Conference Proceedings

Several methods have been combined to measure conductivity and charge storage in insulating spacecraft materials. In order to avoid insulator problems, the motions of conducting electrons and holes must prevent the development of large electric fields exceeding 1E5 V/cm, where problems occur in spacecraft insulators. Approximate knowledge of the electric fields is important. One must consider generation of mobile electrons and holes, their trapping, thermal de-trapping, mobility and recombination.

Classical methods to measure thin film insulator conductivity apply a constant voltage to two electrodes on the sample and measure the resulting current for tens of minutes. Under constant voltage, a …

Elucidating The Mechanisms Of Double Ionization Using Intense Half-Cycle, Single-Cycle, And Double Half-Cycle Pulses, G. Lagmago Kamta, Anthony F. Starace

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We investigate the interaction of a two-active electron system (Li-) with intense single-cycle and double half-cycle pulses. The ‘‘intensity’’ and ‘‘frequency’’ considered correspond to the ‘‘multiphoton above-barrier regime.’’ For the single-cycle pulse (SCP), the electric field changes sign once, allowing electron wave packets created during the first half cycle to recollide with the parent ion when driven back by the field. For the double half-cycle pulse (DHP), however, the electric field does not change sign, and electron wave packets created during the first half cycle are not driven back to the parent ion. We find that both single …

Earth Sciences

We characterize the chemical composition of Asian continental outflow observed during the NASA Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) mission during February–April 2001 in the western Pacific using data collected on the NASA DC-8 aircraft. A significant anthropogenic impact was present in the free troposphere and as far east as 150°E longitude reflecting rapid uplift and transport of continental emissions. Five-day backward trajectories were utilized to identify five principal Asian source regions of outflow: central, coastal, north-northwest (NNW), southeast (SE), and west-southwest (WSW). The maximum mixing ratios for several species, such as CO, C2Cl4, …

We present here results for reactive nitrogen species measured aboard the NASA DC-8 aircraft during the Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) mission. The large-scale distributions total reactive nitrogen (NOy,sum = NO + NO2 + HNO3 + PAN + C1–C5alkyl nitrates) and O3 and CO were better defined in the boundary layer with significant degradation of the relationships as altitude increased. Typically, NOy,sum was enhanced over background levels of ∼260 pptv by 20-to-30-fold. The ratio C2H2/CO had values of 1–4 at altitudes up to 10 …

Late-Holocene Lake-Level Variation In West Greenland, Frank A. Aebly, Sherilyn C. Fritz Oct 2003

Late-Holocene Lake-Level Variation In West Greenland, Frank A. Aebly, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Situated between the North Atlantic and the Greenland ice sheet, the thousands of lakes in the Kangerlussuaq area of West Greenland (67°N) present excellent targets for paleoclimate studies. Paleoshorelines surrounding multiple closed-basin lakes in this area record fluctuations in lake level since deglaciation. Shorelines along two of these lakes, Hundeso and Lake E, were surveyed and trenched to reconstruct the history of lake-level change. The stratigraphies of the trenches were described, and a chronology has been developed using radiocarbon dating of organic material. Preliminary results indicate a highly variable hydrologic regime throughout the late Holocene.

Hundeso had high-stand lake levels …

We report on a search for a high mass, narrow width particle that decays directly to , , or µτ. We use approximately 110 pb-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab from 1992 to 1995. No evidence of lepton flavor violating decays is found. Limits are set on the production and decay of sneutrinos with R-parity violating interactions.

Maillard or browning reactions between reducing sugars and protein lead to formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and are thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetic complications. AGE inhibitors such as aminoguanidine and pyridoxamine (PM) inhibit both the formation of AGEs and development of complications in animal models of diabetes. PM also inhibits the chemical modification of protein by advanced lipoxidation end products (ALEs) during lipid peroxidation reactions in vitro. We show here that several PM adducts, formed in incubations of PM with linoleate and arachidonate in vitro, are also excreted in the urine of PM-treated animals. The …
